RESUMO

Background: Accepting and adapting the maternal role by mothers with premature infants is complicated. Active participation of mothers in neonate massage may facilitate this process. Primary Study Objective: Determining the effect of massage on maternal role adaptation in mothers of premature infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Methods/Design: A non-parallel quasi-experimental study with a sequential sampling method. Setting: This study was done in the NICU of Imam Ali Hospital in Amol City, Iran. Participants: 90 mothers of premature infants hospitalized in the NICU participated in this study. Intervention: The mothers in the intervention group after receiving two training sessions massaged their infant for 15 minutes daily from the third day of hospitalization for 5 consecutive days. Primary Outcome Measures: A maternal role adaptation questionnaire was used. Participants completed the maternal role adaptation questionnaire 3 times: before, on the fifth day, and 14 days after the first day of intervention. The maternal role adaptation questionnaire was used to assess the maternal role adaptation. The participants of the control group also filled out the questionnaire at similar time. Results: The mean scores of maternal adaptation were significantly different between the two control groups (5th day and 14th day) and intervention (day 5: 136.88 ± 10.062 (P = .025); day 14: 151.93 ± 6 (P < .001)). Maternal role adaptation showed an upward trend in the two groups during the 14 days of study, but this trend was significantly higher in the intervention group over time, compared to the control group. Conclusion: Massage of premature infants facilitates the adaptation to maternal role. It is recommended, along with other nursing interventions, to empower mothers with premature neonates admitted to the NICU.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Moral courage is one of the moral virtues, which can have a great impact on the provision of safe care for patients. Providing safe care is one of the most significant and fundamental principles of healthcare. This study aimed to determine the relationship between moral courage and safe care among nurses and explain the factors predicting safe care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study conducted on 172 nurses who worked in selected hospitals affiliated with the Iran University of Medical Sciences in 2019. For this purpose, self-report questionnaires on moral courage and safe nursing care were used. The collected data were analyzed in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 using descriptive (mean, standard deviation, percentage, and frequency) and inferential (Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression) statistics. P values less than 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Mean scores of nurses' moral courage and safe care were desirable (407.57 ± 53.97) and satisfactory (311.31 ± 39.48), respectively. There was a significant correlation between the scores of nursing safe care and moral courage (r = 0.69, P < 0.001). Moral courage, gender, and work experience explained 54% of the variance of nursing safe care. CONCLUSION: The results showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between safety care and moral courage. It seems that increasing nurses' awareness of ethical principles leads to their courageous ethical behaviors, and safety and high-quality care should be one of the goals of all healthcare professionals. Also, the results of this study support the need to improve the knowledge and awareness of nurses and nurse managers regarding the importance of moral courage in providing safe nursing care and improving patient safety.

RESUMO

Healing occurs in a safe milieu, and patients feel safe when service providers view them as whole persons, recognizing the multiple underlying factors that cause illness. Cultural safety can lead to service delivery in this way, but most nurses have no clear understanding of this concept. This study aimed to clarify cultural safety on the basis of Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis. Cultural sensitivity and cultural awareness are the antecedents of cultural safety. These concepts include a nurse's flexibility toward his or her patients with different perspectives, creating an atmosphere free from intimidation and judgment of the patients, with an overall promotion of health in multicultural communities.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although the research in health seeking behavior has been evolving, its concept remains ambiguous. Concept clarification, as a central basis of developing knowledge, plays an undeniable role in the formation of nursing sciences. As the initial step toward the development of theories and theoretical models, concept analysis is broadly used through which the goals can be used and tested. The aim of this study was to report an analysis of the concept of "health seeking behavior". METHOD: Employing a rigorous evolutionary concept analysis approach, the concept of health seeking behavior was examined for its implications, use, and significance in the discipline of nursing between 2000 and 2012. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 40 articles and 3 books were selected for the final analysis. RESULTS: The definition of attributes, antecedents, and consequences of health seeking behavior was performed through concept analysis. Core attributes (interactional, processing, intellectual, active, decision making based and measurable) were studied. The antecedents of concept were categorized as social, cultural, economic, disease pattern and issues related to health services. Health-seeking behavior resulted in health promotion and disease risk reduction. In addition, it led to predicting the future probable burden of the diseases, facilitation of the health status, early diagnosis, complete and effective treatment, and complication control. CONCLUSION: Health-seeking behavior, as a multi-dimensional concept, relies on time and context. An awareness of health-seeking behavior attributes antecedents and consequences results in promoting the status, importance and application of this concept in the nursing profession.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare the effect of continuous care model with routine care on the quality of life among patients who receive a kidney transplant. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a randomized clinical trial, 90 kidney transplant patients were selected from 4 hospitals in Tehran, Iran, and were randomly assigned to 2 group. In the experimental group, continuous care model was applied for 3 months and the control group received routine care. The scale scores of the Kidney Transplant Questionnaire concerning quality of life were monthly compared between the two groups. RESULTS: Of 90 patients, 4 in the experimental and 8 in the control group were excluded from the study. Final analysis was performed on 41 in the experimental and 37 in the control groups. No significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of demographic variables. Although the quality of life scores increased in both groups, the mean scores of the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group at 1, 2, and 3 months. CONCLUSIONS: Continuous care model may improve the kidney transplant patients' quality of life.

RESUMO

One of the most important goals in treating chronic diseases, especially asthma, is the promotion of quality of life (QOL). The present study aimed at identifying the effect of educating method on the QOL of children, who suffered from asthma. In this clinical trial study, 80 children aged 6-12 years with asthma were divided into two groups: control (face-to-face method) and experimental (visual concept mapping method). The QOL of both groups was measured before and after educating by the Juniper's Quality of Life Questionnaire with a one-month interval. The rate of change in the QOL score of the experimental group was 0.3 (±0.7) both before and after intervention and 0.1 (±0.3) in the control group, which was statistically significant (p<0.05).Educating by the visual concept mapping method with regard to the manner of using sprays is taken into account as an efficient and effective method in improving the QOL of children with asthma.
