PET-RAFT Polymerization of Star Polymers with Folded ortho-Phenylene Cores.

ortho-Phenylenes are one of the simplest classes of aromatic foldamers, adopting helical geometries because of aromatic stacking interactions. The folding and misfolding of ortho-phenylenes are slow on the NMR timescale at or below room temperature, allowing detection of folding states using 1 H NMR spectroscopy. Herein, an ortho-phenylene hexamer is coupled with a RAFT chain transfer agent (CTA) on each repeat unit. A variety of acrylic monomers are polymerized onto the CTA-functionalized ortho-phenylene using PET-RAFT to yield functionalized star polymers with ortho-phenylene cores. The steric bulk of the acrylate monomer units as well as the chain length of each arm of the star polymer is varied. 1 H NMR spectroscopy shows that the folding of the ortho-phenylenes do not vary, providing a robust helical core for star polymer systems.

Chaplaincy Perspectives on the Role of Spirituality in Australian Health and Aged Care.

The aim of this study was to explore Australian chaplains' views of spirituality. Semi-structured online interviews were conducted with 16 participants. Participants relied heavily on metaphors and analogies to describe spirituality. Four inter-related themes were identified through reflexive thematic analysis: (1) The core of spirituality: spirituality as a source of meaning or belief which leads to connectedness with something greater than oneself; (2) A function of spirituality: spirituality empowers people to cope in a crisis, by providing motivation, hope and comfort; (3) The experience of spiritual crisis: admission to hospital or residential care can lead to existential struggle; and (4) The spiritual practice: of holding space between struggle and growth. Greater understanding of the theoretical basis of their work may allow chaplains to offer more in the therapeutic space.

Aromatic foldamers as molecular springs in network polymers.

Polymer networks crosslinked with spring-like ortho-phenylene (oP) foldamers were developed. NMR analysis indicated the oP crosslinkers were well-folded. Polymer networks with oP-based crosslinkers showed enhanced energy dissipation and elasticity compared to divinylbenzene crosslinked networks. The energy dissipation was attributed to the strain-induced reversible unfolding of the oP units. Energy dissipation increased with the number of helical turns in the foldamer.

Ubiquitous Nature of Rate Retardation in Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization is one of the most powerful reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) processes. Rate retardation is prevalent in RAFT and occurs when polymerization rates deviate from ideal conventional radical polymerization kinetics. Herein, we explore beyond what was initially thought to be the culprit of rate retardation: dithiobenzoate chain transfer agents (CTA) with more active monomers (MAMs). Remarkably, polymerizations showed that rate retardation occurs in systems encompassing the use of trithiocarbonates and xanthates CTAs with varying monomeric activities. Both the simple slow fragmentation and intermediate radical termination models show that retardation of all these systems can be described by using a single relationship for a variety of monomer reactivity and CTAs, suggesting rate retardation is a universal phenomenon of varying severity, independent of CTA composition and monomeric activity level.

A comparison of RAFT and ATRP methods for controlled radical polymerization.

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are the two most common controlled radical polymerization methods. Both methods afford functional polymers with a predefined length, composition, dispersity and end group. Further, RAFT and ATRP tame radicals by reversibly converting active polymeric radicals into dormant chains. However, the mechanisms by which the ATRP and RAFT methods control chain growth are distinct, so each method presents unique opportunities and challenges, depending on the desired application. This Perspective compares RAFT and ATRP by identifying their mechanistic strengths and weaknesses, and their latest synthetic applications.

Copper-Catalyzed Decarboxylative Difluoromethylation.

We report herein a highly efficient Cu-catalyzed protocol for the conversion of aliphatic carboxylic acids to the corresponding difluoromethylated analogues. This robust, operationally simple and scalable protocol tolerates a variety of functional groups and can convert a diverse array of acid-containing complex molecules to the alkyl-CF2H products. Mechanistic studies support the involvement of alkyl radicals.

Impaired cognitive ability and anxiety-like behavior following acute seizures in the Theiler's virus model of temporal lobe epilepsy.

Viral infection of the CNS can result in encephalitis and acute seizures, increasing the risk for later-life epilepsy. We have previously characterized a novel animal model of temporal lobe epilepsy that recapitulates key sequela in the development of epilepsy following viral infection. C57BL/6J mice inoculated with the Daniel's strain of Theiler's Murine Encephalomyelitis Virus (TMEV; 3×10(5) PFU, i.c.) display acute limbic seizures that secondarily generalize. A majority of acutely seized animals develop spontaneous seizures weeks to months later. As part of our investigation, we sought to assess behavioral comorbidity following TMEV inoculation. Anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment, and certain psychoses are diagnosed in persons with epilepsy at rates far more frequent than in the general population. We used a battery of behavioral tests to assess anxiety, depression, cognitive impairment, and general health in acutely seized animals inoculated with TMEV and compared behavioral outcomes against age-matched controls receiving a sham injection. We determined that TMEV-seized animals are less likely to move through the exposed center of an open field and are less likely to enter into the lighted half of a light/dark box; both behaviors may be indicative of anxiety-like behavior. TMEV-seized animals also display early and persistent reductions in novel object exploration during novel object place tasks and do not improve in their ability to find a hidden escape platform in Morris water maze testing, indicative of impairment in episodic and spatial memory, respectively. Cresyl violet staining at 35 and 250 days after injection reveals bilateral reductions in hippocampal area, with extensive sclerosis of CA1 evident bilaterally along the rostral-caudal axis. Early and persistent behavioral changes in the TMEV model provide surrogate markers for assessing disease progression as well as endpoints in screening for the efficacy of novel compounds to manage both seizure burden and comorbid conditions.
