RESUMO

Monoclonal antibodies reactive against the complement C4A and C4B isotypic components were used in an immunoperoxidase technique for the histological study of normal human renal tissue. Prominent staining with both antibodies was seen in the mesangial areas of all normal kidney sections investigated. Occasional staining of arteriolar walls of the same tissues, however, was also observed. In contrast, no mesangial staining was seen using monoclonal antibodies reactive against other 'early' complement components, such as C1q and C3. Specificity of the glomerular staining with the anti-C4 reagents was demonstrated in two patients possessing only the C4A serum component but lacking genetically the C4B locus products. As would be predicted, glomerular staining with the anti-C4A reagent, but not anti-C4B, was clearly demonstrable. It is concluded that both isotypes of complement C4 are present in normal human glomeruli and thus might be operative for normal mesangial function.

RESUMO

Two radiological methods were compared. More than 100 postmortem-coronary angiograms were taken with standard x-ray procedure and xeroradiography. Xeroradiography--with its "three dimensional view", edge enhancement and variability in exposure time--has certain advantages and appears to be useful in detection of pathological lesions and for documentation in postmortem coronary angiography.

RESUMO

The case of a 44-year-old professional singer is described, who was admitted to the hospital with a severe laryngeal contusion following a sport's accident. After recovering from acute symptoms, he complained of a complete loss of his falsetto voice. At lower pitches, his voice function had returned to normal. Xero-radiography revealed a left unilateral subluxation of the cricothyroid joint. However, intensive voice therapy over 12 months failed to restore the former quality of the falsetto voice. In this patient, the impairment of vocal range could be explained by a disturbance of the tilting mechanism between the cricoid and thyroid cartilages.

RESUMO

Xeroradiography, particularly in addition to conventional tomography, for cervical myelography using water-soluble Metrizamide has been tested. Xerography was done in 30 of a total of 96 examinations and could be compared with conventional X rays. In the sagittal plane there was no advantage, in the lateral plane detail was clearer, especially at the cervico-dorsal junction and in establishing the extent of osteochondrotic changes narrowing the subarachnoid space. Xeroradiography should not be used routinely, but has its merits for certain problems, when higher radiation will be justified.

RESUMO

Xeroradiographic studies were performed in 150 patients with a solitary scintigraphically nonfunctioning nodule of the thyroid gland. This procedure was demonstrated to be superior to conventional radiographic techniques in imaging the trachea, in the visualization of the cervical subcutaneous and visceral compartments and in the identification of cystic walls. It is also a sensitive method for the detection of calcifications. Psammoma bodies are typical for malignant changes in nodes whereas other types of microcalcifications are nonspecific. Coarse, amorphous calcifications are typical for benign adenomas with regressive changes; shell-like calcifications are seen in longstanding cysts.

RESUMO

The advantages of xeroradiography in radiology of the soft parts are emphasized. The technique in tomography of the throat is described. Typical benign diseases of the throat like acute or chronic inflammation, edema, pareses of the vocal cords and injuries are demonstrated on xerotomograms and discussed. Detail of the structures of the throat is better seen in xeroradiographic tomograms than in Röntgentomograms.

RESUMO

Results of 92 xerotomographies of the upper air-ways are demonstrated on selected cases of benign and malignant neoplasms. In tomography of the throat we prefer the positive type of development. Xerography provides a good insight into site and size of tumors in larynx and pharynx.

RESUMO

A patient with post-traumatic rupture of the liver was reported. The patient developed an external biliary fistula following removal of a cholecele the size of a child's head which was accompanied by copious drainage. Radiologic methods mor examining liver injuries and their later complications were discussed.

RESUMO

First experience with xerography of the cruciate ligaments and their lesions in compared with the usual radiographic techniques. Both cruciate ligaments can be shown more often and with sharper contours by using double contrast-arthrography in xeroradiograms. The specific pictorial characteristics of xeroradiography are discussed.

RESUMO

The effect of 6 commonly used contrast media on the results of 3 different methods for determination of thyroid hormone concentration in the serum is examined in vivo. T4 determination by column chromatography proved to be very liable to distortion for contrast media. With some contrast media the Res-O-Mat-ETR test proved unreliable. T4 determination by means of protein binding analysis is not affected by contrast media in the direction of false raised values.

RESUMO

A case of right-sided traumatic diaphragmatic rupture with transdiaphragmatic liver prolapse is reported. The situation could be clarified by combined hepatic and lung scans. The advantages of isotope examinations, particularly in patients with multiple trauma, are stressed.

RESUMO

In 24 melanoma patients body regions with suspicion of metastatic spread were scanned with 67Ga-Citrate. Twenty-two out of 28 melanoma metastases (79%) could be scintigraphically visualized. Falsely negative scans were particularly frequent with small, indurated skin metastases, whereas falsely positive scans were not observed in this study. By means of in vitro experiments it was shown that the uptake of 67Ga into a human melanoma cell line was temperature dependent and reached a maximal value at 37 degrees C after 2 hrs of incubation. Furthermore, it was found that under the same in vitro conditions our melanoma cells bound and released 67Ga differently from 51Cr. From the release studies it was concluded that 67Ga unlike 51Cr does not form a stabile intracellular complex with cell proteins.

RESUMO

Using an own formula (VI) or the formula (VII) of Karran et al. for the determination of liver size from scintigrams, a good correlation was demonstrated to the measured weight in rats. Also the liver size of 44 healthy subjects estimated by the same method (VI) was compared to the ideal liver weight derived from the "Geigy Tables" and showed good correlation. This demonstrates the value of the proposed empirical formula: G equals 0.141 g/cm-3 D1 D2 D3 + 950 g for the calculation of liver weight using scintigraphy.

RESUMO

The results of animal experiments show that distinction must be made between acute and chronic tissue changes produced by irradiation of the liver. The pathologico-morphological findings obtained by irradiation of the liver combined with repeated halothane administration during short-term experiments are scanty and dosage-dependent. Long-term observation has revealed higher-dosage irradiation to be followed by minor inflammation which, if combined with regular halothane administration, progresses to produce the patho-anatomical picture of chronic hepatitis with diffuse cell damage and focal necrosis even in those groups of animals which had been exposed to low-dosage irradiation. It must be assumed that even low-dosage irradiation of the liver which fails to produce measurable changes at the beginning, may influence the structure and function of the hepatic parenchyma. The latent radiation damage manifests itself under additional toxic irritation of the liver, such as that caused by halothane.
