RESUMO

Dietary supplementation with triglyceride tributyrin (TBT), a butyrate precursor, has been associated with beneficial effects on fish health and improvements in the ability of carnivorous fish to tolerate higher levels of plant-based protein. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of a plant-based diet supplemented with TBT on the structural diversity and putative function of the digesta-associated bacterial communities of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). In addition to this, we also assessed the response of fish gut digestive enzyme activities and chyme metabolic profile in response to TBT supplementation. Our results indicated that TBT had no significant effects on the overall fish gut bacterial communities, digestive enzyme activities or metabolic profile when compared with non-supplemented controls. However, a more in-depth analysis into the most abundant taxa showed that diets at the highest TBT concentrations (0.2% and 0.4%) selectively inhibited members of the Enterobacterales order and reduced the relative abundance of a bacterial population related to Klebsiella pneumoniae, a potential fish pathogen. Furthermore, the predicted functional analysis of the bacterial communities indicated that increased levels of TBT were associated with depleted KEGG pathways related to pathogenesis. The specific effects of TBT on gut bacterial communities observed here are intriguing and encourage further studies to investigate the potential of this triglyceride to promote pathogen suppression in the fish gut environment, namely in the context of aquaculture.

In this paper we investigate quasinormal modes (QNM) for a scalar field around a noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole. We verify the effect of noncommutativity on quasinormal frequencies by applying two procedures widely used in the literature. The first is the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation up to sixth order. In the second case we use the continuous fraction method developed by Leaver. Besides, we also show that due to noncommutativity, the shadow radius is reduced when we increase the noncommutative parameter. In addition, we find that the shadow radius is nonzero even at the zero mass limit for finite noncommutative parameter.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of cyclosporine 1% alone or associated with oral mucosa transplantation (OMT) in dogs with dry keratoconjunctivitis (KCS). Schirmer Tear Test (STT-1) and Tear Film Osmolarity (TFO) were measured in both eyes of 30 adult dogs (before and 45 days after treatment. The animals were divided into three groups (10 dogs for group): control (normal dogs), group I (GI, treated with 1% cyclosporine alone), and group II (GII, treated with 1% cyclosporine and OMT). All STT-1 and TFO values were subjected to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, and all were normally distributed. STT-1 and TFO values before and after treatment were subjected to the T-Student Test. The STT­1 and TFO values of the right eye were subjected to Repeated Measures ANOVA followed by a Tukey Test for comparison between groups I and II. Means with a value of p≤0.05 were considered significant. There was a decreased osmolarity in both groups after treatment. Mean osmolarity in GII (322.60±16.56 mOsm/L) was significantly lower than GI (336.40±5.66 mOsm/L). The OMT associated with cyclosporine 1% improved the osmolarity of the tear film in dogs with KCS with a seeming synergism between the clinical and surgical treatments.(AU)


Avaliou-se o uso de ciclosporina 1% isolada ou associada ao transplante de mucosa oral (TMO) em cães com ceratoconjuntivite seca (CCS). O teste lacrimal de Schirmer (TLS-1) e a osmolaridade do filme lacrimal (OFL) foram medidos em ambos os olhos, em 30 cães adultos, antes e 45 dias após o tratamento. Os animais foram divididos em três grupos (10 cães por grupo): controle (cães saudáveis), grupo I (GI, tratados apenas com ciclosporina 1%) e grupo II (GII, tratados com 1% de ciclosporina associada ao TMO). Todos os valores do TLS-1 e da OFL foram submetidos ao teste de normalidade Shapiro-Wilk, e todos foram distribuídos normalmente. Os valores de TLS-1 e OFT antes e depois do tratamento foram submetidos ao teste T-Student. Os valores TLS-1 e OFT do olho direito foram submetidos à ANOVA de medidas repetidas, seguida por um teste de Tukey para comparação entre os grupos I e II. Valor de P≤0,05 foi considerado significativo. Houve uma diminuição da osmolaridade em ambos os grupos após o tratamento. A osmolaridade média no GII (322,60±16,56 mOsm/L) foi significativamente inferior à no GI (336,40±5,66 mOsm/L). O TMO associado à ciclosporina 1% melhorou a osmolaridade do filme lacrimal em cães com CCS, com uma sinergia aparente entre os tratamentos clínicos e cirúrgicos.(AU)

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic and isolated inflammation of the esophagus characterized by a marked infiltration of eosinophilic leukocytes. Diagnosis and course of the disease are based exclusively on histopathology. Therefore, patients must undergo several esophageal biopsies, implying a risk associated with the procedure and considerable use of resources. Objective: The presence of active circulating eosinophils, which are quantifiable through the expression of specific cellular activation proteins in their membrane, could be consistent with histopathological findings, which are currently the only valid parameters in studies on EoE. METHODS: The activity of peripheral blood eosinophils from patients with EoE was analyzed by identifying 5 surface molecules (CD69, IL- 5Rα, CD44, ICAM-1, CD63), which are seen to be expressed by the active eosinophils in flow cytometry. The results were compared with the infiltrate of eosinophils present in patients' esophageal biopsies. RESULTS: ICAM-1 levels decreased significantly in patients with active EoE compared with nonactive EoE patients, allergic patients, and healthy controls. In patients with EoE, an inverse correlation was observed between the number of eosinophils in the esophageal biopsy and the percentage of ICAM-1 expression in peripheral blood eosinophils. No differences were observed for the remaining molecules studied. CONCLUSION: Expression of ICAM-1 in blood eosinophils could be a useful noninvasive marker for the diagnosis and assessment of patients with EoE.

Multiple environmental concerns such as garbage generation, accumulation in disposal systems and recyclability are powerful drivers for the use of many biodegradable materials. Due to the new uses and requests of plastic users, the consumption of biopolymers is increasing day by day. Polylactic Acid (PLA) being one of the most promising biopolymers and researched extensively, it is emerging as a substitute for petroleum-based polymers. Similarly, owing to both environmental and economic benefits, as well as to their technical features, natural fibers are arising as likely replacements to synthetic fibers to reinforce composites for numerous products. This work reviews the current state of the art of PLA compounds reinforced with two of the high strength natural fibers for this application: flax and jute. Flax fibers are the most valuable bast-type fibers and jute is a widely available plant at an economic price across the entire Asian continent. The physical and chemical treatments of the fibers and the production processing of the green composites are exposed before reporting the main achievements of these materials for structural applications. Detailed information is summarized to understand the advances throughout the last decade and to settle the basis of the next generation of flax/jute reinforced PLA composites (200 Maximum).

We here propose to model active and cumulative cases data from COVID-19 by a continuous effective model based on a modified diffusion equation under Lifshitz scaling with a dynamic diffusion coefficient. The proposed model is rich enough to capture different aspects of a complex virus diffusion as humanity has been recently facing. The model being continuous it is bound to be solved analytically and/or numerically. So, we investigate two possible models where the diffusion coefficient associated with possible types of contamination are captured by some specific profiles. The active cases curves here derived were able to successfully describe the pandemic behavior of Germany and Spain. Moreover, we also predict some scenarios for the evolution of COVID-19 in Brazil. Furthermore, we depicted the cumulative cases curves of COVID-19, reproducing the spreading of the pandemic between the cities of São Paulo and São José dos Campos, Brazil. The scenarios also unveil how the lockdown measures can flatten the contamination curves. We can find the best profile of the diffusion coefficient that better fit the real data of pandemic.

A flexible and ultralight planar thermoelectric generator based on 15 thermocouples composed of n-type bismuth telluride (Bi2Te3) and p-type antimony telluride (Sb2Te3) legs (each with 400 nm thick) connected in series, on 25 µm thick Kapton substrate, was fabricated with impressive power factor values of 2.7 and 0.8 mW K-2 m-1 (at 298 K) for Bi2Te3 and Sb2Te3 films, respectively. The p-n junction thermoelectric device can generate a maximum open-circuit voltage and output power of 210 mV and 0.7 µW (3.3 mW cm-2), respectively, for a temperature difference of 35 K, which is higher than the one observed for a conventional thermoelectric device with metallic contacts for p-n junctions. The results were combined with numerical simulations, showing a good match between the experimental and the numerical results. The current density versus voltage (J-V) characteristics of the fabricated p-n junctions revealed a diode behavior with a turn-on voltage of ≈0.3 V and an impressive rectifying ratio (I+1V/I-1V) of ≈2 × 104.

OBJECTIVES: Because commensal viruses are defined by the immunologic tolerance afforded to them, any immunomodulation, such as is received during haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation, may shift the demarcation between innocuous viral resident and disease-causing pathogen. METHODS: We analysed by deep-sequencing the plasma virome of 40 allogeneic haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation patients 1 month after transplantation. Because human pegivirus (HPgV) was highly prevalent, we performed a 1-year screening of 122 plasma samples by specific real-time reverse transcription PCR assay. We used the log-rank test and the Gray test to assess association with outcomes, and the Mann-Whitney test and multivariable linear regression model to assess association with T-cell reconstitution. RESULTS: Polyomaviruses (PyV) (20/40 patients), anelloviruses (16/40), pegiviruses (14/40) and herpesviruses (14/40) were most frequently identified, including ten cytomegalovirus; three Epstein-Barr virus; two herpes simplex virus type 1; one human herpesvirus 6b and one human herpesvirus 7; 18 Merkel cell-PyV; two BK-PyV; three PyV-6; and one JC-PyV. Papillomavirus and adenovirus were identified in 11 and two patients, respectively. The HPgV specific real-time reverse transcription PCR screening identified 51 of 122 positive samples, high virus loads and persistent infections up to 1 year after transplantation. Comparison between patients with or without HPgV infection at time of transplantation did not reveal a significant difference in infections, engraftment, survival, graft vs. host disease, relapse or immune reconstitution. CONCLUSIONS: The blood virome after allogeneic haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation includes several DNA viruses, notably herpesviruses and PyV. Among RNA viruses, HPgV is highly prevalent and persists for several months, and it thus may deserve special attention in further research on immune reconstitution.

Energy transfer from a quantized field to a quantized dipole is investigated. We find that a single photon can transfer energy to a two-level dipole by inducing a dynamic Stark shift, going beyond the well-known absorption and emission processes. A quantum thermodynamical perspective allows us to unravel these two energy transfer mechanisms and to identify the former as a generalized work and the latter as a generalized heat. We show two necessary conditions for the generalized work transfer by a single photon to occur, namely, off-resonance and finite linewidth of the pulse. We also show that the generalized work performed by a single-photon pulse equals the reactive (dispersive) contribution of the work performed by a semiclassical pulse in the low-excitation regime.
