RESUMO

Myocardial infarction is a life-threatening complication of the coronary artery disease - the leading cause of premature death worldwide. The severity of this condition is the result of cellular death following the myocardial ischaemia, which occurs via several mechanism including apoptosis. For the research of this condition, animal models are often employed. We established isoprenaline-induced rat model of myocardial infarction, focusing on the immunohistochemical analysis of the expression of antiapoptotic and proapoptotic proteins BCL-2 and BAX, respectively. Apoptosis (based on BAX-positivity) was activated in cardiac muscle cells within the first day, later on day 8 also in fibroblasts of the forming scar tissue. Antiapoptosis in cardiac muscle cells was weak to moderate on the day 1 and 2, on the day 8 macrophages were strongly positive for BCL-2. The results confirmed that programmed cell death as well as mechanisms of antiapoptosis contribute to the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction. Previous research demonstrated that by experimentally affecting proapoptotic and antiapoptotic signals, it is possible to influence various aspects of myocardial infarction including: infarction size, cardiac remodelling and prognosis of the heart failure. Future research is warranted to fully elucidate the role of this process during myocardial infarction, which will result in refined diagnostic and therapeutic strategies (Tab. 1, Fig. 1, Ref. 21). Keywords: myocardial infarction, isoprenaline, apoptosis, necrosis, BCL-2, BAX.

RESUMO

Numerous procedures and techniques are used to correct clawtoe deformity. This paper reports on a new method of correcting clawtoe deformity surgically. Treatment of this condition is not new, and a survey of the literature is offered initially. The theory behind the tendon transposition is discussed and symptoms associated with this deformity are outlined. Variations of this new procedure are listed and illustrated clinically. The authors recommend the peroneus tertius redirection and/or reconstruction procedure as the most adequate way of reducing clawtoe deformity associated with flexible cavus foot.

RESUMO

A sub-population of beagles with abnormal behavioral patterns has been identified, isolated and tested for responsively to selected classes of psychoactive drugs. The abnormal behavior was ameliorated by anxiolytics and antidepressants but not by antipsychotics, an antihistaminic, an alpha-adrenergic blocker, a beta-adrenergic blocker, or an anticholinergic drug. Improvement occurred after a single dose of the anxiolytic drugs but did not occur until 10-18 days after daily dosing with standard tricylic antidepressants and the MAO inhibitor isocarboxazid. This delayed onset in beagles resembles that seen on use of these drugs in humans. The results with these drugs suggest that the abnormal behaviors of the beagles are related to anxiety and are in part depressive in nature. This colony provides an animal model of abnormal behavior which allows evaluation of the anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of drugs and estimates of the onset of action of antidepressant drugs.

RESUMO

An 11-year-old black girl with excessive tissue growth from the conjunctiva and adjacent tissue, of several years' duration, was treated with excision of the tissue and topical steroids. Histopathologic examination revealed eosinophilic and plasma cell infiltration with a few lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear cells. Proliferation of the capillary endothelium was also noted. To our best knowledge, this type of inflammatory reaction of the anterior aspects of the globe has not yet been reported.
