RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the value of Doppler ultrasonography in the assessment of congenital vascular lesions of the maxillofacial region. METHODS: 27 new patients with 36 congenital vascular lesions in the maxillofacial region as well as 10 patients previously treated with cryotherapy underwent ultrasonography (US) with a 6.0-10.0 MHz broadband linear transducer (reference Doppler frequency 7.5 MHz). Initial grey-scale US was followed by Color Doppler, Power Doppler and spectral Doppler studies. The presence or absence of flow was noted. In areas of high vascularity the number of vessels within a 1 cm(2) restricted region of interest were increased by spectral Doppler. RESULTS: US allowed differentiation of seven hemangiomas from other congenital vascular lesions and thus appropriate treatment of patients. Low flow vessels were demonstrated within the scars of five lesions previously treated with cryotherapy, requiring further intervention. CONCLUSION: Doppler US is a widely available, non-invasive and relatively inexpensive technique which can be used to characterize the flow of head and neck vascular anomalies and thus differentiate hemangiomas from other vascular malformations.

RESUMO

Thrombosis of vena cava inferior can occur as complication of numerous diseases. Because of a variety of causes, the clinical signs accompanying thrombosis are often ambiguous, which is the cause of delay in initiation of appropriate treatment. This article presents three interesting cases of thrombosis of vena cava inferior in children accompanying extensive burn, the Budd-Chiari syndrome, and prolonged presence of catheters in vessels. The use of ultrasound in B presentation, Color Doppler and Power Doppler has enabled early diagnosis and application of appropriate treatment.

RESUMO

Meckel's diverticulum is the congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract affecting about 2% of the population. It is a true diverticulum containing all layers of the ileum wall. Heterotopic tissue is frequently present (25%): gastric mucosa, duodenal mucosa, jejunal mucosa and pancreatic tissue. Meckel's diverticulum is localized about 50 cm from the ileo-colic valve on the external border of the ileum. Most of Meckel's diverticula are clinically silent; clinical symptoms (19%) are in cases of complications such as: strangulation of the bowel in a ring formed by the diverticulum, intussusception of the diverticulum into the ileum, volvulus, incarceration of the diverticulum in hernia, tumour originating in the diverticulum. The diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum is very difficult. The most useful in the diagnosis are plain abdominal radiographs, barium studies, CT, sonography and scintigraphy Abdominal sonography shows a tubular fluid structure localized far from the coecum. The wall of the diverticulum is swollen and in the lumen are chyme or fat.
