RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a significant number of cases of fistulae of the lower lip with the light microscope in order to investigate the histological variation and to attempt to define the histopathological pattern of the lesion. METHODS: Congenital fistulae of the lower lips of 17 patients with Van der Woude syndrome were analyzed by light microscopy. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The walls of most of the fistulae consisted of stratified nonkeratinized squamous epithelium and a lamina propria of dense connective tissue with areas of lymphohistiocytic inflammatory infiltrates. Bundles of striated muscle fibers, blood vessels, nerves, adipose tissue, and mixed acinar glands were observed. These glands surrounded the entire wall of the lesion, and their excretory ducts opened into the lumen of the fistula, explaining the clinical observation of elimination of mucous secretion through the opening of the fistula. Two microform cases of fistula were analyzed that presented only a depression in the epithelium at the site corresponding to the opening of the fistula.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between fistulae of the lower lip and cleft lip and/or palate in patients with Van der Woude syndrome. METHODS: The medical records of 11,000 patients with cleft lip and/or palate registered at the Cleft Lip-Palate Research and Rehabilitation Hospital, University of São Paulo, Bauru were reviewed. Of these patients, 133 (1.2%) presented with Van der Woude syndrome. RESULTS: Of the 133 patients, 88 (66.2%) exhibited full clefts, 22 (16.5%) only cleft lip, and 23 (17.3%) only cleft palate. The lower-lip fistulae observed in these 133 patients were bilateral symmetric in 66 (49.7%), bilateral asymmetric in 42 (31.6%), microform in 19 (14.3%), median in 5 (3.8%), and unilateral in 1 (0.7%). CONCLUSION: This population sample appears to exhibit the previously published tendency for bilateral, unilateral, or mixed-type congenital fistulae to be associated with cleft lip with or without cleft palate, while so-called microforms or conic elevations are almost exclusively associated with cleft palate.

RESUMO

Aiming to evaluate the position variations of the upper canines in individuals with congenital cleft of the lip and palate which interfere in the final result of a prosthesis, we have done an analysis and a measurement of this alterations in casts of 208 patients with complete unilateral cleft before the prosthetic treatment. We have verified in the vertical direction, the infra-version and in the horizontal direction, the mesiodistal deviation of its relation of normal occlusion and the distance in relation to the mid line. The results obtained have become evident a frequent anterolateral openbite in the cleft side, besides a common deviation of the upper mid line, due to the general position of the upper canines on the side side of the cleft to the mesial.

RESUMO

Our purpose was to compare incidence of post-surgical pain associated to the endodontic therapy where the instrumentation on the root canal was performed by the method of Marshall & Pappin and the method of Marshall & Pappin complemented by the ultrasonic. Seventy patients with only one tooth needing endodontic treatment were treated by one of the methods and, posteriorly, evaluated. The endodontic treatment was performed at one time and from the seventy teeth, thirty have been instrumented by the manual method complemented by the ultrasonic and forty by the manual instrumentation. The patients were clinically controlled after the endodontic treatment was finished during periods of 24, 48 and 72 hours to evaluate their post-surgical condition. The results suggest that were no statistically significant differences (p less than 0.05) in the incidence of pain between the employed methods or according to the pulpar semiologic condition in any of the observed periods. However, we have realized that there was a tendency for a smaller percentage of a postoperative pain in those cases of necropulpectamy treated by the endosonic ultrasonic synergistic system. In those cases of biopulpectomy this has been not observed.

RESUMO

The purpose of this paper was to assess the clinical ability of two bleaching techniques. Patients with at least one darkened teeth caused by mechanical injuries or imperfection in the endodontic therapy were included in this study. The first step was to take an initial photography. After that the teeth were subjected to the bleaching procedures. The techniques employed were proposed by NUTTING & POE or LACERDA et alii. The assessments were made by three trained examiners using the initial and final pictures. The scores were attributed according to the color of the teeth. The data were submitted to the statistical analysis, when was possible to verify that both techniques were equally effective.
