RESUMO

The authors explored social perceptions related to the use of anabolic steroids (AS) in sports. More specifically, 78 women and 102 men read one of two scenarios depicting a male athlete facing either a drug use or non-drug use situation. Then, participants reported their perceptions of the scenario protagonist in terms of self-determined sport motivation, sportspersonship orientations, and athletic aggression. Results of a multivariate analysis of covariance indicated that, in comparison with a non-using protagonist, the AS-using athlete was regarded as less self-determined in one's motivation (i.e., sport participation based on predominant feelings of pressure to obtain external rewards or avoid punishment) and as displaying weaker sportspersonship orientations (i.e., lesser concerns for opponents, the social conventions of sport, and for one's own athletic commitment). In addition, the AS-using athlete was perceived as resorting more readily to reactive aggression than to instrumental aggression (i.e., intent to injure one's opponent vs merely hinder his performance). Finally, the analyses did not disclose significant gender or interaction effects. The findings are discussed in view of theoretical and practical implications.

RESUMO

This study examines first the relationship of perceived motivational climate and goal orientation to indices of intrinsic, extrinsic motivation and amotivation, and second their respective role in predicting these indices of motivation. A total of 160 students enrolled in physical activity classes volunteered to participate. Results of Pearson correlation analyses indicated that students who perceived their class climate as emphasizing mastery were more likely to feel self-determined. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that perceived motivational climate was a better predictor of all indices of motivation than goal orientations. Results, discussed according to the achievement goal perspective and the hierarchical model of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, highlight a possible motivational process explaining how the motivational climate overrides goal orientations.

RESUMO

Arterial distensibility estimated by carotid femoral pulse wave velocity was evaluated in 22 patients with sustained essential hypertension, together with 3 different methods of blood pressure (BP) measurement: mercury sphygmomanometer, semiautomatic BP recording using the Dinamap apparatus and 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring using a Spacelabs monitor. Although pulse wave velocity did not correlate with BP measured by mercury sphygmomanometer, it strongly and positively correlated with BP measurements using the other 2 procedures. The best correlation was observed with ambulatory BP with respect to systolic BP only (r = 0.685, p less than 0.001). Since cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in hypertensive patients is mainly related to lesions of the large arteries, the determination of pulse wave velocity together with ambulatory BP measurements is proposed for the evaluation of cardiovascular risk.
