AIM: To investigate the side effects of the commonly used laser treatment along with testing the neuroprotective effect of bFGF on a potential retinal impairment. METHODS: To do this, 30 chinchilla pigmented adult male rabbits were divided into the control and experimental groups. The control and experimental groups underwent both laser application and bFGF treatment. The retinal tissue impairment and its renewal rate were tested under the light and electron microscopical levels. RESULTS: The focal laser application on rabbit eyes caused morphological alterations both in the application region and in the neighbouring areas. In the damaged areas, the outer nuclear layer of the neural retina was almost disappeared, retina pigment epithelium was interrupted, the retina pigment epithelium migrated intraretinally, and the damaged region along with neighbouring areas seemed to be not separated. bFGF application just after the laser photocoagulation, revealed better results in application areas. CONCLUSION: It could be suggested that the bFGF application following laser photocoagulation might have protective, repairing and wound healing effects on the retina.

Granulated metrial gland (GMG) cells are pregnancy-specific cells that may have many functions in successful placentation and pregnancy. In the present study, changes in the rat GMG cell structure, distribution and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression during early pregnancy were evaluated by light microscopy. Implantation sites taken from females with spontaneous abortion were also investigated. On Day 7 of pregnancy, GMG cells were distributed through the implantation and interimplantation sites. They formed metrial glands in the mesometrial triangle on Day 9, and were observed in the decidua basalis on Day 14 of pregnancy. Avidin-biotin complex immunohistochemistry revealed that GMG cells showed moderate staining for VEGF at the beginning of pregnancy and intense staining on Days 9 and 10 of pregnancy. They were localised mostly near the newly formed blood vessels. The implantation sites from spontaneously aborting females showed numerous leucocytes in the lumen of mesometrial blood vessels. In spontaneously aborting females, GMG cells showed a distinct morphology, increased in number and volume, their granules were denser and degranulation was observed. These results suggest that rat GMG cells might be a guide for placental angiogenesis and they might share a role with leucocytes in pathological conditions.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to determine the possible correlation between phenytoin and vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor in the wound healing process. METHODS: Sixty Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups, each containing 15 animals. The experimental groups received a daily phenytoin treatment (10 mg) for 3 or 7 days following 3-cm dorsal skin incisions on the midline; the control group incisions were treated with 0.5 mL of saline solution during the same time periods. After completion of treatments, all animals were killed, and skin tissue samples were obtained. RESULTS: Histopathologic examination of all groups revealed that there were significantly increased (p<0.05) amounts of fibroblasts, collagen deposition, and blood vessels in the phenytoin-treated groups when compared to the control groups. Although immunolocalization of vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor was weak in the 3-day phenytoin treatment groups, they were strongly expressed in the 7-day treatment group when compared to the control groups. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study demonstrate that the tissue alterations of the wound healing process could be accelerated by phenytoin and the potential local pathways of vascular endothelial growth factor and basic fibroblast growth factor.
