RESUMO

A computational examination of the four modes of addition in the Diels-Alder reactions of 3-substituted cyclopropene derivatives (substituents: BH(2), CH(3), SiH(3), NH(2), PH(2), OH, SH, F, and Cl) with butadiene have been carried out at the B3LYP/6-31++G(d)//HF/6-31++G(d) level. The degree of stabilization of these derivatives at the ground state correlates with the electronegativity of the substituent. This attenuation of reactivity and differences in steric interactions are the only factors needed to explain both the high facial selectivity and the differences in the endo-exo selectivity seen in these reactions. Furthermore, evidence is presented that indicates that stabilization by an interaction involving the syn C-3 hydrogen of cyclopropene and butadiene is small or irrelevant in controlling the endo-exo selectivity of the Diels-Alder reaction.

RESUMO

The levels of two steroids, asterone 1 and asterogenol 4, obtained by hydrolysis of the crude asterosaponin mixture from the starfish Asterias vulgaris, were highest in winter and spring, then the steroid levels fell to their annual minima in July, after the spawning period. Levels also varied geographically, but the ratio of these steroids remained approximately constant.

RESUMO

The levels of the major sterols of the starfish Asterias vulgaris collected at one location in Nova Scotia varied considerably from month to month. After spawning in June the levels of the sterols in the starfish were very low, but a rapid assimilation of dietary sterols allowed the total sterol level to increase approximately two-hundred-fold to the annual maximum in July. The levels of a few minor sterols were unaffected by the spawning process, and during this period they emerged as the major components of the sterol mixture. The sterol mixtures from samples collected at different locations were compared.
