RESUMO

Radiation-induced damage and instabilities in back-illuminated silicon detectors have proved to be challenging in multiple NASA and commercial applications. In this paper, we develop a model of detector quantum efficiency (QE) as a function of Si-SiO2 interface and oxide trap densities to analyze the performance of silicon detectors and explore the requirements for stable, radiation-hardened surface passivation. By analyzing QE data acquired before, during, and after, exposure to damaging UV radiation, we explore the physical and chemical mechanisms underlying UV-induced surface damage, variable surface charge, QE, and stability in ion-implanted and delta-doped detectors. Delta-doped CCD and CMOS image sensors are shown to be uniquely hardened against surface damage caused by ionizing radiation, enabling the stability and photometric accuracy required by NASA for exoplanet science and time domain astronomy.

The world of medicinal therapies has been historically, and remains to be, dominated by the use of elegant organic molecular structures. Now, a novel medical treatment is emerging based on CeO2 nano-crystals that are discrete clusters of a few hundred atoms. This development is generating a great deal of exciting and promising research activity, as evidenced by this Special Issue of Biomolecules. In this paper, we provide both a steady-state and time-dependent mathematical description of a sequence of reactions: superoxide generation, superoxide dismutase, and hydrogen peroxide catalase and ceria regeneration. This sequence describes the reactive oxygen species (ROS); superoxide, O2-, molecular oxygen, O2, hydroxide ion OH- and hydrogen peroxide, H2O2, interacting with the Ce3+, and Ce4+ surface cations of nanoparticle ceria, CeO2. Particular emphasis is placed on the predicted time-dependent role of the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio within the crystal. The net reaction is succinctly described as: H2O2 + 2O2- + 2H+ → 2H2O + 2O2. The chemical equations and mathematical treatment appears to align well with several critical in vivo observations such as; direct and specific superoxide dismutase (SOD), ROS control, catalytic regeneration, ceria self-regulation and self-limiting behavior. However, in contrast to experimental observations, the model predicts that the 4+ ceric ion state is the key SOD agent. Future work is suggested based on these calculations.

The rapid growth and increasing popularity of smartphone technology is putting sophisticated data-collection tools in the hands of more and more citizens. This has exciting implications for the expanding field of citizen science. With smartphone-based applications (apps), it is now increasingly practical to remotely acquire high quality citizen-submitted data at a fraction of the cost of a traditional study. Yet, one impediment to citizen science projects is the question of how to train participants. The traditional "in-person" training model, while effective, can be cost prohibitive as the spatial scale of a project increases. To explore possible solutions, we analyze three training models: 1) in-person, 2) app-based video, and 3) app-based text/images in the context of invasive plant identification in Massachusetts. Encouragingly, we find that participants who received video training were as successful at invasive plant identification as those trained in-person, while those receiving just text/images were less successful. This finding has implications for a variety of citizen science projects that need alternative methods to effectively train participants when in-person training is impractical.
