RESUMO

Cryotherapy, a therapeutic technique involving localized cooling of the body, has gained popularity for postsurgical rehabilitation. It induces a reduction in cellular metabolism, vasoconstriction, and pain relief, making it an attractive option for managing postoperative (PO) shoulder pain. This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of cryotherapy in PO shoulder patients, focusing on pain, range of motion, functionality, and temperature changes. The review included six randomized clinical trials, involving a total of 233 patients who underwent various shoulder surgeries. Cryotherapy was applied using different methods, including Cryo/Cuff, Cryoton®, Polar Care 300, and ice packs. Results indicated that cryotherapy was generally effective in reducing PO shoulder pain. However, one study found no significant difference in pain outcomes between the cryotherapy group and control group. Furthermore, three studies demonstrated a decrease in intra-articular and skin temperatures with cryotherapy application. A risk of bias analysis revealed some concerns in the overall risk of bias for five studies, with one study considered to have a high risk of bias. Although publication bias assessment was not conducted due to the limited number of included studies, it was noted that the studies exhibited heterogeneity in terms of population, intervention methods, and outcome measures. In conclusion, cryotherapy appears to be a promising adjunctive treatment for PO shoulder pain, although the existing evidence has some limitations, including small sample sizes and methodological concerns. More high-quality studies are needed to establish the full extent of cryotherapy's effectiveness in PO shoulder rehabilitation, especially regarding its impact on functionality and range of motion.

RESUMO

Given the relevance of laser application, the objective of this study was to carry out a systematic review to verify the therapeutic effects of laser application on psoriasis plaques. The databases used were PubMED, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, and in the gray literature: Google Scholar, Open Grey and LIVIVO. A total of 1,227 records were found, after removal of duplicates 851 studies remained for Phase 1 (reading titles and abstracts) and 31 for Phase 2 (reading the full studies) and finally 9 studies remained for this review, 7 randomized and 2 non-randomized. The risk of bias analysis had two studies with moderate risk and seven with high risk. The present study presented evidence that laser application has positive effects such as reduction of psoriasis plaques. However, due to the high risk of bias, there is a need for further studies.

Abstract Processing medical record data involves ethical and legal challenges. This study proposes a processing description for using personal data obtained from medical records, as well as offers a general view of the current legislation on handling this type of data, contributing to further our understanding regarding consent when using medical records for research purposes. The Brazilian agency responsible for the ethical standards on research with humans issued a specific guideline on the subject to its local committees; however, such guidelines require a review based on the new meanings and senses established by the more recent legislation, according to which scientific research presents an exception to data processing without express consent by its titulary.

RESUMO

Cryotherapy is used in individuals in the postoperative period (PO) of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair, owing to its effects such as increased pain threshold, decreased cellular activity, and vasoconstriction. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of cryotherapy on pain intensity in the immediate PO of ACL reconstruction. A scoping review was performed in the databases: Cochrane, Embase, Lilacs, LIVIVO, PEDro, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science; and gray literature: Google Scholar, CAPES Thesis Database, and Open Grey. PRISMA recommendation was followed. Two blinded reviewers performed the selection of studies: Phase 1-reading of titles and abstracts and Phase 2-Reading of the full texts and disagreements resolved in consensus. The references of 701 studies were identified, 603 from the main databases and 98 from the gray literature. After removal of duplicates, 387 studies were left for Phase 1-reading of titles and abstracts according to eligibility criteria and for Phase 2-28 studies for reading of full texts. Two studies were excluded: one randomized clinical trial and another sandwich study. Finally, 15 studies were included in this review. Cryotherapy is effective in reducing pain intensity because there were reductions in the scores of subjective pain scales in the immediate PO of ACL reconstruction. Cryocompression was shown to be superior to conventional cryotherapy.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: There is a data gap regarding cold pain and pressure pain in healthy young individuals. The present study aimed to compare cold pain threshold and intensity and pressure threshold in young men and women with different fat percentages. METHODS: The study included 30 men and 42 women aged between 18 and 25 years, divided into two groups: normal - body mass index ≤24.9 and overweight - ≥25. Fat percentage was estimated by tetrapolar bioimpedance, pain-pressure threshold by pressure algometer, cold pain threshold was timed, and the intensity measured by the visual analog scale. RESULTS: The intensity of pain caused by cold showed no significant difference between groups, as well as the cold pain threshold and the initial and final pain threshold. The same behavior happened within the men and women groups. When comparing the difference between genders, pressure pain and cold pain thresholds had significant differences. Pain intensity did not differ between genders. CONCLUSION: Fat percentage did not affect the response time of cold pain and pressure pain thresholds and pain intensity in young adults. When considering gender, although the cold pain threshold in men was higher than in women, pain intensity was similar.

INTRODUCTION: Cryotherapy is any form of therapeutic application of cold which decreases the temperature of tissues. OBJECTIVE: To compare the variations in surface temperature of the quadriceps muscle at three different times when exposed to two forms of cryotherapy: ice bags or bags containing a mixture of ice and water. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study involved 18 subjects, aged between 18 and 25 years, of both sexes. In each volunteer, ice cryotherapy on the left thigh and a mixture of ice and water on the right thigh was simultaneously applied for 15 minutes to the quadriceps femoris region. The temperature was measured by a thermograph and the following moments were recorded : before cryotherapy, immediately and 5 and 30 minutes after removal of the modality of cryotherapy. RESULTS: Both cryotherapy methods were effective to decrease the temperature of the quadriceps and the mixture of ice and water was able to induce a lower temperature compared to the modality which used ice only. The cooling for both modalities lasted for at least 15 minutes after the removal of ice and surface temperature had been restored at pre application 30 minutes after removal. CONCLUSION: Both methods promoted a reduction in temperature that lasted at least 15 minutes, and 30 minutes after the withdrawal the temperature was reestablished to normal levels. However, the mixture of ice and water produced cooling more remarkable than the ice alone.

RESUMO

The cold environment is an indispensable for slaughtering and processing in the poultry industry In field studies it was observed that a large percentage of workers of this sector have hand contact with the cold chicken and / or frozen, have high complaints prevalence of pain and discomfort, mostly in the hands. The contact of human skin with a cold surface may cause pain, numbness and risk of skin damage. Currently, although the use of infrared thermal imaging has been useful in identifying normal and abnormal patterns of heat distribution on the surface of the body. However your use for work tasks and to assess the potential development of injuries related to it has been limited. Based on the physiological responses can be objectively evaluate the effects of the task demands of work and thus contribute to the development of effective strategies for ergonomic intervention. The methodology will be used to evaluate the subjective thermal sensation with analogue scale of ASHRAE and the infrared thermography in the dorsal and palmar hands. Thus the objective of this research is to propose reference values for thermographic hands within limits of comfort.

RESUMO

Due to Brazil is a tropical country has activities in occupational exposure to cold restricted to few sectors especially the meatpacking industry. Taking into account that the country in 2010, was again the largest exporter of poultry meat in the world and consequently employing a large number of workers for their slaughter and processing. The search for greater productivity can result in an increase in work rate, as indicated in this sector as monotonous, repetitive and uncomfortable. According the Programa de Frigorífico it was found that within six years, about 20% of the six thousand workers in a slaughterhouse in southern Brazil, received welfare benefits due to musculoskeletal diseases. Adding to this, the lack of parameters for the Brazilian standardization concerning occupational activities carried out in cold. Although several epidemiological studies point to the cold as a risk factor for occurrence or aggravation of musculoskeletal disorders, research in this field is still limited and often contradictory conclusions. This article aims to review developments concerning the poultry industry and the fridge in Brazil, as well as raising the question about the increased productivity of the slaughterhouse, since it has already shown a high prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders related to work.

RESUMO

Occupational cold exposure is an important risk factor that increases stress at work and can induce many health effects like diseases and symptoms related to cold, including work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The methodological procedures were performed to measure these environmental variables as recommended by the ISO 7726/85. For the analysis of repetitiveness was used the OCRA checklist and evaluation of musculoskeletal morbidity conducted by the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. So the objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between cold environmental variables and prevalence of musculoskeletal morbidity in the repetitive work. Was found association between work in cutting and boning sector (occupational cold and repetitive work) and the presence of musculoskeletal morbidity, with a significance of 99%.

BACKGROUND AND OBJETIVES: The polarized current can be used in different types of injuries, but the literature is scarce in the physical therapy . The aim of this study was to present through literature the effects of polarized current and explore different ways of applying for physiotherapy. CONTENTS: We used the databases LILACS, Medline and Scielo with the following keywords: polarized current, galvanic current, faradic current; current exponential; diadynamic Bernard; high voltage current, microcurrent, iontophoresis. 13 references were reviewed from the period 1983 to 2009, and the use of other not indexed studies for the contextualization of the subject. Found that this type of current provides benefits to patients with trauma-orthopedic complications, neurological, sports or evenpost mastectomy because of their analgesic effect, anti-inflammatory,vascular, nerve stimulators and bone healing. CONCLUSION: Analgesia, the vascular and tissue healing effects are the most cited studies found by polarized current, especially the use of diadynamic Bernard current and high voltage current. However, other studies should be conducted to further conclusions can be made.
