RESUMO

In situ real-time x-ray diffraction was used to study temperature-induced structural changes of 1-5 nm Au, Pt, and AuPt nanocatalysts supported on silicon substrates. Synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction indicates that the as-synthesized Au and Au(64)Pt(36) nanoparticles have a non-crystalline structure, while the Pt nanoparticles have the expected cubic structure. The nanoparticles undergo dramatic structural changes at temperatures as low as 120 °C. During low-temperature annealing, the Au and AuPt nanoparticles first melt and then immediately coalesce to form 4-5 nm crystalline structures. The Pt nanoparticles also aggregate but with limited intermediate melting. The detailed mechanisms of nucleation and growth, though, are quite different for the three types of nanoparticles. Most interestingly, solidification of high-density AuPt nanoparticles involves an unusual transient morphological transformation that affects only the surface of the particles. AuPt nanoparticles on silicon undergo partial phase segregation only upon annealing at extremely high temperatures (800 °C).

The color Doppler echocardiographic studies and aortic angiograms of all patients who had these procedures performed within 2 weeks of each other between October 1984 and August 1985 were reviewed to determine whether any parameters of the regurgitant jet visualized by color Doppler study predicted the severity of aortic insufficiency as assessed by angiographic grading. Patients with an aortic valve prosthesis were excluded. Twenty-nine patients had aortic insufficiency and had adequate color Doppler studies for analysis. The mean time between color Doppler examination and angiography was 2.3 days (range 0 to 12). The maximal length and area of the regurgitant jet were poorly predictive of the angiographic grade of aortic insufficiency. The short-axis area of the regurgitant jet from the parasternal short-axis view at the level of the high left ventricular outflow tract relative to the short-axis area of the left ventricular outflow tract at the same location best predicted angiographic grade, correctly classifying 23 of 24 patients. However, the jet could be seen from this view in only 24 of the 29 patients. The height of the regurgitant jet relative to left ventricular outflow tract height measured from the parasternal long-axis view just beneath the aortic valve correctly classified 23 of the 29 patients. Mitral stenosis or valve prosthesis, which was present in 10 patients, did not interfere with the diagnosis or quantitation of aortic insufficiency by these methods.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMO

The binding of serotonin to bovine adrenal medulla gangliosides (BAMG), bovine brain gangliosides (BBG), and BBG-synthetic lecithin mixed micelles has been demonstrated by a rapid technique using fluorescence monitoring of dialysis rates. BAMG micelles bound 0.10 mM serotonin at about half the efficiency of BBG micelles having the same sialic acid concentration (0.50 mM) in water. In water, the effect of BBG micelles was essentially identical to that of mixed micelles containing the same quantity of BBG. Ca2+ (1.20 mM), however, cancelled the effect of the mixed micelles on serotonin dialysis and reduced the effect of BBG micelles to about one quarter of that observed in water. These and other observations are related to earlier studies and to neurochemical processes which may involve gangliosides.
