27Al MQMAS of the δ-Al13-Keggin.

One-dimensional 27Al, 23Na Magic-Angle-Spinning (MAS) NMR and 27Al Multiple-Quantum Magic-Angle-Spinning NMR (MQMAS) measurements are reported for the δ-isomer of the Al13 Keggin structure at high spinning speed and 14.1 T field. Values for the CQ and η parameters are on the same scale as those seen in other isomers of the Al13 structure. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed for comparison to the experimental fits using the B3PW91/6-31+G* and PBE0/6-31+G* levels of theory, with the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM).

Did Robert Louis Stevenson have hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia?

Chronic illness played a major role in the life and literary success of Robert Louis Stevenson. However, the exact nature of his chronic illness remains unclear. It is possible that Stevenson had hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (Osler-Rendu-Weber Syndrome). This would explain his chronic respiratory complaints, recurrent episodes of pulmonary hemorrhage, and his death, at age 44 years, of probable cerebral hemorrhage. It would also explain his mother's hitherto unreported but apparent stroke, at age 38 years. Further support for this hypothesis might come from new details about the health of Stevenson and his relatives or from molecular analysis of tissue specimens remaining from him.

Genetic recombination in mammalian somatic cells: a brief note.

Crossing over in somatic cells is a likely source of genotypic modification observed in ageing and in carcinogenesis. The possible evolutionary significance of this mechanism is discussed.
