RESUMO

The Bedouin syndrome represents social interactions based on four premises: a friend of my friend is my friend, a friend of my enemy is my enemy, an enemy of my friend is my enemy, and an enemy of my enemy is my friend. These extensive associations exist in many social and economic relationships, such as market competition, neighborhood relations, political behavior, student gangs, organized crime, and the violent behavior of sports spectators (hooliganism) worldwide. This work tests the Bedouin syndrome hypothesis considering the violent behavior in the football fan culture. We construct relational networks of social affinities to represent the social interactions of organized fan bases (Torcidas organizadas) involved in hooligan violence in Pernambuco, Brazil. Contrary to prior expectations, the results evidence no statistical support for the Bedouin syndrome in 13 of the 15 analyzed clubs. There is weak statistical support in two interactions and strong statistical support in one interaction to state that a friend of my enemy is my friend (instead of an enemy). The only support for the Bedouin syndrome is circumstantial based on a prior assumption of an alliance. We propose a network development that can be more suitable to represent football fans' violent behavior. The results contribute to understanding the hooliganism social phenomenon in football-rooted cultures and their impact on public health, identifying potential determinants for organized violence by young spectators' and supporting police strategies by defining relevance scores for the most potential clashes and coalitions of gangs.

RESUMO

This assessment aims at measuring the impact of different location mobility on the COVID-19 pandemic. Data over time and over the 27 Brazilian federations in 5 regions provided by Google's COVID-19 community mobility reports and classified by place categories (retail and recreation, grocery and pharmacy, parks, transit stations, workplaces, and residences) are autoregressed on the COVID-19 incidence in Brazil using generalized linear regressions to measure the aggregate dynamic impact of mobility on each socioeconomic category. The work provides a novel multicriteria approach for selecting the most appropriate estimation model in the context of this application. Estimations for the time gap between contagion and data disclosure for public authorities' decision-making, estimations regarding the propagation rate, and the marginal mobility contribution for each place category are also provided. We report the pandemic evolution on the dimensions of cases and a geostatistical analysis evaluating the most critical cities in Brazil based on optimized hotspots with a brief discussion on the effects of population density and the carnival.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the hyaluronic acid (HA) inflammatory reaction, fibroblasts, fibrosis and duration of effect in the dorsal region of tobacco-exposed rats. METHODS: Ten Wistar rats were divided into two groups: tobacco-exposed-group (TEG;n=5) and air-control-group (CG;n=5). The TEG animals were tobacco-exposed twice a day, 30-minutes/session, during 60 days. After this period, all animals received 0.1 mL HA subcutaneous injection in the dorsal area. The volume of HA was measured immediately after HA injection and weekly using a hand-caliper in nine weeks. After this period, all the animals were euthanized, and a specimen of was collected to evaluate inflammatory cells, fibroblasts, and fibrosis by HE. RESULTS: This study showed a higher inflammatory reaction in TEG than CG: inflammatory cell-count (CG: 1.07±0.9; TEG: 8.61±0.36, p<0.001); fibroblast count (CG: 2.92±0.17; TEG: 19.14±0.62, p<0.001), and fibrosis quantification (CG: 2.0; TEG: 3.75, p<0.001). The analysis of the HA volume in nine weeks in the dorsal region did not show a difference between groups (p=0.39). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that the HA injection in the TEG caused an increase in inflammatory cell count, fibroblast, and fibrosis quantification when compared to the CG. There was no difference in the duration of effect of HA between the groups.

RESUMO

Abstract Purpose: To introduce a nonliving microvascular training model based on vessels diameter and feasibility. Methods: We dissected ten oxen tongues, and divided the pedicles into three-thirds: proximal, middle and distal. We measured the external vessels diameter in all regions. We performed a descriptive statistical analysis. Three students (two beginner level and one intermediate level) performed this training. We evaluated the confidence, according Likert scale. Results: We dissected all oxen tongues, each tongue showed two parallel pedicles. Each pedicle was located at 1.5 - 2.0 cm from the midline. Proximal median artery and vein diameter were 3.9 ± 0.7, and 5.04 ± 1.44mm, respectively. In the middle third, the mean artery diameter was 3.3 ± 0.4mm, and the vein diameter was 3.5 ± 0.9mm. The distal third showed a mean artery diameter of 2.0 ± 0.42mm, and a vein diameter of 2.4 ± 0.82mm. The students performed ten anastomoses. This study showed a higher confidence level (CL) (p=0.03) than the pre training CL assessment. Conclusion: This study suggested a feasible non-animal model for microsurgical training process for beginners and intermediate trainees.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a non-invasive technique that can be used to assess the integrity of the white matter in the brain. AIMS: To investigate the usefulness of DTI in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) and to observe its relationship with lateralisation of the epileptogenic focus in these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We analysed 11 patients diagnosed with TLE in accordance with the pre-surgical protocol of our epilepsy unit, and who were seizure-free two years after performing a temporal lobectomy plus amygdalohippocampectomy (Spencer technique). As part of their pre-operative study, a 1.5 T magnetic resonance brain scan with diffusion tensor imaging was performed. A voxel-based analysis was then employed to study the differences in connectivity between the hemisphere that underwent surgery and the contralateral hemisphere. RESULTS: Compared with the contralateral hemisphere, a statistically significant reduction in fractional anisotropy (p < 0.05) was observed in the corpus callosum, the cingulate, the superior longitudinal fasciculus, the anterior thalamic radiations, the internal capsule, the ventral lateral and pulvinar nuclei of the thalamus, the inferior frontooccipital fasciculus, the uncinate fasciculus, the inferior longitudinal fasciculus and the parahippocampal gyrus, all ipsilateral to the epileptogenic focus. CONCLUSIONS: The characterisation of the abnormalities in the connectivity of the cerebral white matter, by means of DTI in patients with TLE, can be a valuable aid for the lateralisation of the epileptogenic focus in the pre-surgical evaluation of these patients. Further studies with a higher number of patients would be needed to confirm these results.

ABSTRACT Objective: To determine the prevalence of overweight and its associated factors in women of childbearing age from the city of Vitória de Santo Antao, Pernanbuco. Method: This cross-sectional study with 322 women was conducted between the months of January and April 2013, by door-to-door active case finding. The nutritional status of individuals aged more than 18 years was classified according to the body mass index, and of adolescents, according to the body mass index-for-age. The dependent variable was overweight (overweight/obesity), and the associated factors (independent variables) were: socioeconomic and demographic characteristics (age, education level, literacy status, employment status, socioeconomic class, food security, number of household dwellers, basic sanitation, floor, roof, and number of rooms and bedrooms), behavioral characteristics (physical activity), and reproductive history (age at menarche, number of pregnancies, and contraceptive method). Poisson regression analyzed the factors associated with excess weight. Results: The prevalence of overweight was 60.9%. The regression model showed that age (20-39 years: prevalence ratio 1.84; 95% confidence interval 1.04-3.24; ≥40 years: prevalence ratio 2.20; 95% confidence interval 1.18-4.08) and age at menarche (≤13 years: prevalence ratio 1.37; 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.82) were associated with excess weight. Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight accounted for nearly two-thirds of the study sample and was associated with higher age and lower age at menarche, consistent with other studies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between total and segmental body fat, bone mineral density and bone mineral content in undergraduate students stratified according to nutritional status. METHODS: The study included 45 male undergraduate students aged between 20 and 30 years. Total and segmental body composition, bone mineral density and bone mineral content assessments were performed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Subjects were allocated into three groups (eutrophic, overweight and obese). RESULTS: With the exception of upper limb bone mineral content, significantly higher (p<0.05) mean bone mineral density, bone mineral content, and relative body fat values were documented in the obese group. Total body and segmental relative body fat (lower limbs and trunk) were positively correlated (p<0.05) with bone mineral density in the overweight group. Upper limb fat was negatively correlated (p<0.05) with bone mineral content in the normal and eutrophic groups. CONCLUSION: Total body and segmental body fat were correlated with bone mineral density and bone mineral content in male undergraduate students, particularly in overweight individuals.

Novel rehabilitation interventions have improved motor recovery by induction of neural plasticity in individuals with stroke. Of these, Music-supported therapy (MST) is based on music training designed to restore motor deficits. Music training requires multimodal processing, involving the integration and co-operation of visual, motor, auditory, affective and cognitive systems. The main objective of this study was to assess, in a group of 20 individuals suffering from chronic stroke, the motor, cognitive, emotional and neuroplastic effects of MST. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we observed a clear restitution of both activity and connectivity among auditory-motor regions of the affected hemisphere. Importantly, no differences were observed in this functional network in a healthy control group, ruling out possible confounds such as repeated imaging testing. Moreover, this increase in activity and connectivity between auditory and motor regions was accompanied by a functional improvement of the paretic hand. The present results confirm MST as a viable intervention to improve motor function in chronic stroke individuals.

Introduction: Alcoholism is characterized by repetitive intake of alcohol, currently constituting a public health problem. Organic use of the energy provided by alcohol depends on the nutritional status of the individual, the frequency and pattern of consumption, which can lead to overweight and obesity in moderate drinkers, and malnutrition among chronic users. Aim: To assess the nutritional status and associate it to socio-demographic factors of alcoholic inpatients. Methodology: Study of a cross-sectional type made in a hospital institution of the Brazilian Northeast. All patients with diagnoses for Alcohol Dependence Syndrome (ADS) were included in the research, inpatients and those who fulfilled the eligibility criterion. The data collection was done through a proper structured questionnaire, approaching socio-demographic information, anthropometrical and of comorbidities. Results: 121 alcoholic adults were assessed, with an age range of 43,59±9,53 years old, of the masculine gender. The prevalence was of divorced individuals (38%), unemployed (54,5%), with low school level (44,6%) and with family income between one and two minimum wages (41,3%). It was also verified that 75,2% of them were eutrophic, according to the Body Mass Index (BMI), however 66,1%, 83,5% and 88,4% were malnourished, according to the Triceps Skinfold Thickness (TSF), the Arm Circumference (AC) and the Arm Muscle Circumference (AMC), respectively. As for the abdominal obesity, 92,6% and 72,7% of the individuals were classified as with no abdominal obesity, according to the Waist Circumference (WC) and the waist-to-height (WHtR), respectively, and 91,7% with no risk to cardiovascular disease in accordance to waist hip ratio (WHR). Conclusion: Besides the social and economic damages caused by the excessive alcohol consumption, It also became clear the detrimental health effects, mainly to the nutritional status, with the impairment of either the lean mass or the fat mass being observed (AU)

Statistical analysis was performed with the aid of the Predictive Analytics Software, version 13.00, with a 5% level of significance. Results: The sample comprised 409 individuals, 73.1% of whom were female. Age ranged from 20 to 90 years (mean: 61.00 ± 11.62 years) and older adults accounted for the largest proportion of the sample (56.2%). The body mass index demonstrated that 75.2% had excess weight. The waist-to-hip ratio, waistto-height ratio, conicity index and waist circumference revealed obesity rates of 65.4%, 90.27%, 89.0% and 58.4%, respectively. A total of 53.2% had high sensitivity C-reactive protein levels (> 0.3 mg/L). Moreover, sex, level of schooling, fasting blood sugar, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, waist-to-height ratio and waist circumference were significantly associated with inflammation after controlling for confounding variables. Discussion: The present results suggest that maintaining a fasting blood sugar level below 100 mg/dl and a good HDL-c level as well as avoiding central obesity can have a protective effect against the occurrence of chronic inflammation in patients with diabetes. Conclusion: High sensitivity C-reactive protein levels were high in the majority of patients studied and were associated with the female sex, abdominal obesity, low HDL-c levels, a low level of schooling and high blood sugar levels (AU)

RESUMO

La Rioja is the region where the top rated wines from Spain come from and also the origin of one of the most prestigious wines in the world. It is worldwide recognized, not only for the quality of the vine, but also for the many factors involved in the process that are controllable by the farmer, such as fertilizers, irrigation, etc. Likewise, there are other key factors, which cannot be controlled that play, however, a crucial role in the quality of the wine, such as temperature, radiation, humidity, and rainfall. This research is focused on two of these factors: temperature and irradiation. The objective of this paper is to be able to recognize these factors, so as to ensure a proper decision criterion when selecting the best location for new vineyard plantations. To achieve this objective, a mesoscale model MM5 is used, and its performance is assessed and compared using different parameters, from the grid resolution to the physical parameterization of the model. Finally, the study evaluates the impact of the different parameterizations and options for the simulation of meteorological variables particularly relevant when choosing new vineyard sites (rainfall frequency, temperature, and sun exposure).

Backgound: Gonarthrosis is a degenerative condition that importantly limits an individual's performance. Surgical treatment is used in patients with important functional limitation and severe pain. Knee arthroplasty is one of the surgeries with the best functional results in patients with this condition. However, its limitations include the risk of heavy bleeding and the resulting need for blood transfusion. The objective of this study was to assess the need for blood transfusion in patients undergoing knee arthroplasy in whom the cell saver was used postoperatively and find out the cost differences between the cell saver and standard blood transfusion. Methods: Retrospective, cross-sectional, retrolective trial including 300 records of patients who underwent knee arthroplasty at Hospital Ángeles Querétaro that included the use of the cell saver and allogeneic blood transfusion from October 2001 to June 2013. Results: Only 3 of the 246 operated knees required allogeneic blood transfusion. There were no complications/infections resulting from the use of the cell saver. Mean age of patients was 67.1 ± 9.78 years; females were predominant, as they were 141 (60.5%), compared to 92 (39.5%) males. The blood collected with the cell saver ranged from 150 to 1,225 ml with a mean of 318 ± 100.6 ml and was retransfused to each patient. Conclusions: Cell saver use in patients subjected to knee arthroplasty importantly decreases the need for allogeneic blood transfusion.

RESUMO

The desire to increase rewards and minimize punishing events is a powerful driver in behaviour. Here, we assess how the value of a location affects subsequent deployment of goal-directed attention as well as involuntary capture of attention on a trial-to-trial basis. By tracking eye position, we investigated whether the ability of an irrelevant, salient visual stimulus to capture gaze (stimulus-driven attention) is modulated by that location's previous value. We found that distractors draw attention to them significantly more if they appear at a location previously associated with a reward, even when gazing towards them now leads to punishments. Within the same experiment, it was possible to demonstrate that a location associated with a reward can also bias subsequent goal-directed attention (indexed by action choices) towards it. Moreover, individuals who were vulnerable to being distracted by previous reward history, as indexed by oculomotor capture, were also more likely to direct their actions to those locations when they had a free choice. Even when the number of initial responses was made to be rewarded and punished stimuli were equalized, the effects of previous reward history on both distractibility and action choices remained. Finally, a covert attention task requiring button-press responses rather than overt gaze shifts demonstrated the same pattern of findings. Thus, past rewards can act to modulate both subsequent stimulus-driven as well as goal-directed attention. These findings reveal that there can be surprising short-term costs of using reward cues to regulate behaviour. They show that current valence information, if maintained inappropriately, can have negative subsequent effects, with attention and action choices being vulnerable to capture and bias, mechanisms that are of potential importance in understanding distractibility and abnormal action choices.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is an increasing problem of epidemic proportion, and it is associated with various musculoskeletal disorders, including impairment of the spine. However, the relationship between obesity and spino-pelvic parameters remains to date unsupported by an objective measurement of the mechanical behavior of the spino-pelvic parameters depending on body mass index (BMI) and the presence of central obesity. Such analysis may provide a deeper understanding of this relationship. PURPOSE: To assess whether BMI and central obesity are associated with modifications on spino-pelvic parameters and determine if exists any correlation between BMI and obesity with the type of lumbar lordosis (LL). METHODS: A cross-sectional study with 200 participants was conducted. Parameters measured were LL, pelvic tilt, sacral slope, and pelvic incidence (PI), using lumbosacral radiographs in lateral view. Subjects were classified depending on BMI. In a secondary analysis, the subjects were categorized into two groups depending on the presence or not of elevated abdominal circumference. The categorical variables were compared using Chi-square test, and the mean values were compared using ANOVA and student t test. A Spearman correlation test was used to analyze the correlation between BMI categories and LL types. RESULTS: From the total of participants, there were 51 (25.5 %) normal weight subjects, 93 (46.5 %) overweight, and 56 (28 %) obese individuals. The spino-pelvic parameters among these groups are practically equal. The correlation between the different BMI categories and LL types is poor 0.06 (P = 0.34). In a secondary analysis, grouping the participants in obese and non-obese, the results showed that obesity is modestly positively associated with increasing of spino-pelvic parameters values, in particular with PI (P = 0.078). The comparison made between the presence or not of central obesity, interestingly did not show significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the results did not reach statistically significant differences, the results indicate that the obese spine is slightly different from the non-obese spine. Therefore, this relationship deserves future attention.

RESUMO

The scope of this paper was to investigate the relationship between the nutritional status and the motor skills of the elderly registered in the Family Health Program in the urban area of Vitória de Santo Antão in the State of Pernambuco, by means of a transversal epistemological descriptive-analytical field study. The participants of this survey were 235 elders, both male and female of 60-years-old and over registered in the family health program in the urban area of the city. The nutritional status was evaluated by the body mass index and the circumference of the calf. Four motor tests were used to evaluate motor performance: Time Up&Go, Tinetti's Index, Functional Reach and Unipodal Support. The associations were checked using Spearman's correlation. The association of the nutritional status with the motor tests was statistically significant among males* or females**: (Time Up&Go rho = 0.290* / 350**; Functional Reach rho = 0.232* / 352**; Tinetti's Index rho = 243* / 363** and Unipodal Support rho = 221* / 475**. The evaluation of the results revealed an association between nutritional status and functional capacity of the elders no matter what gender; with obesity being a limiting nutritional condition to adequate performance in the tests.

Para análise do desempenho motor foram utilizados quatro testes motores: Time Up&Go, Índice de Tinetti, Alcance Funcional e Apoio Unipodal.
