RESUMO

There have been several studies about the presence of leptin in serum and testicular tissue, and none of them compares the leptin expression in the testicular tissue of fertile and infertile men. We assessed the presence of leptin expression in the testicular tissue of fertile and infertile men. 20 azoospermic infertile men were included in the study. All patients underwent testicular sperm extraction (TESE) for ICSI. For the detection of leptin, the immunohistochemistry was carried out. Intensity of immunohistochemical staining was subjectively estimated and expressed as negative (-), weak positive (+), intermediate positive (++) and strong positive (+++). Testicular tissues of 5 fertile patients, aged 50-60 years, was stained with leptin for control group. Mann-Whitney U test was used as the statistical method. There was no statistically significant difference in leptin staining between infertile patients and control group (p < 0.05). Leptin staining in tubuli seminiferi and Leydig cells were generally equal or Leydig cells were stained (+) much. This difference was not statistically significant. We found that there is leptin staining in Leydig cells and tubuli seminiferi. There is no difference in normal and infertile men for leptin staining properties in testicular tissue. This condition suggests that the effect of leptin on reproductive functions originates from a systemic effect related to central neuroendocrine system, androgen levels or spermatogenic existence rather than its direct effect on testicular tissue.

RESUMO

The treatment of condyloma acuminatum may be problematic in clinical practice. We present a 27-year-old man with condyloma acuminatum who was treated successfully with a combination therapy of isotretinoin and interferon-alfa-2a. In the previous reports of combination therapy, isotretinoin has been given in a dosage of 1 mg/kg/day. However, we achieved the same success at a dosage of 0.5 mg/kg/day of isotretinoin.

RESUMO

The most common site of teratomas in neonates is in the sacrococcygeal region. Herein the authors describe a congenital teratoma, and to their knowledge it is the first reported case of vulvar site in a newborn. Tumor was removed on the fourth day of life, and she was completely normal 18 months after the operation. Because of possible malignancy or recurrence, complete surgical excision of the tumor and careful follow-up is the treatment of choice. J Pediatr Surg 36:620-621.

RESUMO

The purpose of the present study is to assess the development of seminiferous tubule volume, stromal volume and total testis volume in the human fetal testis during the fetal period using the stereological method. In this study, we examined 90 testes of 45 human fetuses with no congenital anomalies and pathologies. They were aged between 12 and 40 weeks and localized between the scrotum and the abdomen. Total testis volume, seminiferous tubule volume, and stromal volume were estimated using Cavalier Principles. The weight and density of the testes were calculated as well. During the fetal period, the testes were firstly found on the right in the 27th week and on the left in the 32nd week in the scrotum. At the end of the third trimester and full term, the migration of the testes into scrotum was completed (98%). When the second trimester, third trimester and full term fetuses were compared, the differences between testis volumes were significant (p<0.001). The density of the testes between the groups was not significant (p>0.05). Testis parameters during the fetal period were not significantly (p>0.05) different between the right and left testes localization. The correlation between the fetal testis parameters was significant (p<0.001). Towards the end of the fetal period, the rate of seminiferous tubule volume to stromal volume changed in the favor of seminiferous tubule volume. It was observed that interstitial tissue became more regular and had a good organized structure with the progress of gestational age. In the third trimester, the lumen in the seminiferous tubules became more regular and clear and the interstitial tissue had a clear appearance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Nodules of ectopic adrenal cortex are found incidentally during inguinal operations. These rests have some clinical significance as they may undergo marked hyperplasia in conditions associated with excessive ACTH production, and occasionally may give rise to neoplasms. In the present study, it is aimed to evaluate the ectopic remnants of adrenal tissue encountered during the inguinal operations in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Four hundred and fifty-two inguinal operations were performed on 397 children (325 male/72 female; mean age 2.7 years), during a period of 36 months. Nodules resembling ectopic adrenal tissue from eleven patients (2.7%) were removed and the histopathological examination was performed using hematoxylin-eosin staining. RESULTS: Ectopic adrenal cortical tissues were found in eight male patients (2%), located within the distal end of the spermatic cord. Macroscopically, the nodules were round to oval in shape, 1 to 5 mm in diameter, and bright yellow to orange in colour. Microscopically, they had three layers of adrenal cortex surrounded by a fibrous capsule and none contained any medulla. Hyperplasia or neoplastic changes were not detected, and no fetal cortex was identified. CONCLUSIONS: It is important for surgeons to be conscious of the possibility that a nodule along the spermatic cord may be the ectopic adrenal cortical tissue. As they are associated with hyperplasia and neoplastic change, removal of ectopic adrenal cortical tissue is warranted whenever it is encountered, but a routine search for them is not mandatory.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the number of mast cells (MCs) varies in and around prostatic carcinoma tissue, and with histopathological grading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens of 27 prostatic carcinomas were stained with the toluidine blue and staged histopathologically using the Gleason grading system. The MCs were counted in five high-power microscopy fields within and around the tissue samples, and the results analysed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Spearman's correlation. RESULTS: The mean number of MCs was 1.7 per field within and 3.31 per field around the cancer tissue, the difference between these being significant (P<0. 05). There was a close correlation between the numbers of MCs within the tumour and Gleason grade (r=0.56, P=0.002) but not between grade and counts around the tumour (r=-0.18, P=0.35). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that some MCs aggregate at the periphery of the prostatic adenocarcinoma and that the number of MCs within the tumour tissue is related to tumour differentiation.
