RESUMO

The aim was to determine the prevalence of obesity and overweight among students in the Kumasi metropolis. In a descriptive cross-sectional study, 500 students aged 10 to 20 years were examined from two junior high schools selected by multistage sampling technique and three randomly selected senior high schools. Height and weight were measured in all participants and the body mass index (BMI) of each individual was calculated. Body mass index classes were calculated according to the International Obesity Task Force standards. Out of the 500 students, 290 (58.00%) were males and 210 (42.00%) were females. The prevalence of underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obesity was 7.40%, 79.60%, 12.20%, and 0.80%, respectively. Overweight was more prevalent among students than obesity. There is therefore the need to establish effective public health promotion campaigns among students in order to curtail future implications on health.

RESUMO

Management of malunions, delayed unions, and nonunions is a complex task that initially requires appropriate diagnosis and classification. Diagnostic modalities currently used include radiography, fluoroscopy, tomography, computed tomography, and radionucleotide evaluations. Based on these evaluations, nonunions may be classified as hypervascular or avascular in nature. Determining the presence of a synovial pseudoarthrosis or infection is also vital to nonunion management. Current treatment regimens available include combinations of cast immobilization, electrical stimulation, and surgical repair with and without bone graft. Internal and external fixation also provide rigid stability to promote healing of nonunion sites. Infected nonunions should be managed with appropriate surgical debridement and antibiotics. Internal fixation in the presence of infection may not necessarily need to be removed. There is no single best method for treatment of nonunions. Therapy must be tailored to each individual to provide a cure.

RESUMO

Air infused into the jugular vein of dogs at a constant rate for one hour produced transient hypotension, modest elevation of the systemic venous pressure and a considerable fall of the arterial oxygen tension. All of these measurements returned almost to normal on the termination of the infusion. A lethal rate of infusion, 0.69 ml of air per kg of body weight per minute, produced heart failure with a decided rise of systemic venous pressure and fall of blood pressure. The pre-failure oxygen pressure did not fall to a lethal level. Six and a half minutes was the longest time that the characteristic murmur could be heard after the cessation of infusion of non-fatal doses of air.
