In recent years, the potential of waste engine oil (WEO) as a rejuvenator for aged asphalt binders has gained significant attention. Despite this interest, understanding WEO's regeneration mechanism within aged asphalt binders, particularly its diffusion behavior when mixed with both aged and virgin asphalt binders, remains limited. This study adopts a molecular dynamics approach to constructing models of virgin, aged, and rejuvenated asphalt binders with different WEO contents (3%, 6%, 9%, and 12%). Key properties such as the density, glass transition temperature, cohesive energy density, solubility parameter, viscosity, surface free energy, fractional free volume, and diffusion coefficient are simulated. Additionally, models of rejuvenated asphalt binder are combined with those of aged asphalt binder to investigate mutual diffusion, focusing on the impact of WEO on the relative concentration and binding energy. The findings reveal that WEO notably decreased the density, viscosity, and glass transition temperature of aged asphalt binders. It also improved the molecular binding within the asphalt binder, enhancing crack resistance. Specifically, a 9% WEO content can restore the diffusion coefficient to 93.17% of that found in virgin asphalt binder. Increasing the WEO content facilitates diffusion toward virgin asphalt binders, strengthens molecular attraction, and promotes the blending of virgin and aged asphalt binders.

Self-melting ice asphalt pavement materials inhibit pavement freezing and improve driving safety. This paper aims to study the long-term salt release characteristics of self-melting ice asphalt mixtures and the impact on pavement after complete salt release. Firstly, a method to accelerate the rapid release of salt based on the Los Angeles abrasion tester. Then, long-term salt release patterns were elucidated under the influence of deicing agent dosage, type of asphalt, and type of gradation. Finally, a quantitative analysis of the pavement performance after complete salt release is conducted. The results indicate that the release efficiency of the Los Angeles abrasion tester method has increased by 91 times compared to the magnetic stirrer immersion flushing method and by 114 times compared to the natural soaking method. The SBS-modified self-melting ice asphalt mixture possesses a longer duration of salt release, but the uniformity of salt release is inferior. Salt release duration is directly proportional to the dosage of deicing agents. SMA-13 self-melting ice asphalt mixture exhibits poorer uniformity in salt release. After complete salt release, high-temperature stability of self-melting ice asphalt mixtures decreased by 31.6%, low-temperature performance decreased by 15.4%, water stability decreased by 26.7%, and fatigue life decreased by 35.9%.

A large amount of solid waste, such as steel slag (SS), is generated annually. At the same time, the shortage of road construction materials is becoming a concern. In this study, to recycle and reuse SS as a substitute for natural aggregates to achieve resource conservation and sustainable development of roads were conducted. First, the electromagnetic performance of SS was explored to evaluate its wave-absorbing properties. Next, the effect of different SS contents on heating properties, surface temperature, heating uniformity, and ice melting time (IMT) were investigated. Finally, the carbon emissions assessment (CEA) of conventional asphalt mixture (CAM) and steel slag asphalt mixture (SSAM) was compared. Results indicated that SS has ferromagnetic behavior and higher electromagnetic parameters, showing better wave-absorbing properties than limestone. There were three stages during microwave heating (MH): ice melting, moisture emitting, and stabilization. In addition, heating uniformity tends to be poor with the increase of SS, and samples with 100 % content of SS have the highest standard deviation of 21.04 °C and 20.77 °C after 270 s at -10 °C and - 20 °C. Samples containing 50 % SS have the best microwave deicing properties, which can reduce the IMT by 28.57 % to 46.18 % at different initial freezing temperatures and ice thickness compared to CAM. Furthermore, CEA revealed that CAM and SSAM's carbon emissions over road construction's life cycle are similar (around 27,000 kg) and originate mainly from the mixing and raw material extraction phases. However, SSAM leads to better environmental and economic benefits and provides an exemplary resource conservation and waste reuse solution.

To cope with the global climate crisis and assist in achieving the carbon neutrality, the use of biomass materials to fully or partially replace petroleum-based products and unrenewable resources is expected to become a widespread solution. Based on the analysis of the existing literature, this paper firstly classified biomass materials with potential application prospects in pavement engineering according to their application and summarized their respective preparation methods and characteristics. The pavement performance of asphalt mixtures with biomass materials was analyzed and summarized, and the economic and environmental benefits of bio-asphalt binder were evaluated. The analysis shows that pavement biomass materials with potential for practical application can be divided into three categories: bio-oil, bio-fiber, and bio-filler. Adding bio-oil to modify or extend the virgin asphalt binder can mostly improve the low temperature performance of asphalt binder. Adding styrene-butadienestyrene (SBS) or other preferable bio-components for composite modification will have a further improved effect. Most of the asphalt mixtures prepared by using bio-oil modified asphalt binders have improved the low temperature crack resistance and fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures, but the high temperature stability and moisture resistance may decrease. As a rejuvenator, most bio-oils can restore the high and low temperature performance of aged asphalt and recycled asphalt mixture, and improve fatigue resistance. Adding bio-fiber could significantly improve the high temperature stability, low temperature crack resistance and moisture resistance of asphalt mixtures. Biochar as a bio-filler can slow down the asphalt aging process and some other bio-fillers can improve the high temperature stability and fatigue resistance of asphalt binders. Through calculation, it is found that the cost performance of bio-asphalt has the ability to surpass conventional asphalt and has economic benefits. The use of biomass materials for pavements not only reduces pollutants, but also reduces the dependence on petroleum-based products. It has significant environmental benefits and development potential.

As a good asphalt modifier, natural asphalt has been the focus of more attention because of its low price and ability to improve the performance of modified asphalt. In this paper, the incorporation of a natural asphalt binder in the production of bituminous materials for pavement application in China was experimentally investigated to evaluate the feasibility of such a process and its potential benefits in terms of performance. For this purpose, an asphalt binder conventionally used in the south of China was blended with various percentages of a hard natural binder obtained from the region of Selenice in Albania. The content of Selenice natural bitumen (SNB) was 80.5%, having high molecular weight and the advantages of good stability and compatibility with virgin asphalt. The physical, rheological, and mechanical properties, as well as the modification mechanism of the binder and corresponding asphalt mixture, were evaluated in the laboratory. It was observed that the hard binder improved the response of the binder blend at high and intermediate temperature; this reflected a better stability, improved moisture susceptibility, and enhanced rutting resistance of the mixture. Fluorescence microscopy showed that after dissolving, the size of the SNB modifier became smaller and its distribution was uneven, presenting three forms, granular, agglomerated, and flocculent properties. Chemical test results showed that the modification mechanism of SNB was mainly related to the enhancement of hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals forces caused by sulfoxide and carbonyl along with the stress concentration caused by silica particles. Molecular composition revealed that the proportion of middle molecules has reduced while the proportion of large molecules has increased. It is considered that SNB is a promising low-priced natural modifier with excellent rutting resistance properties. Future research will be focused on the economic analysis, pavement life cycle assessment of SNB modified asphalt, and its application in perpetual pavements.

Using recyclable materials in asphalt pavement is a fundamental design approach not only for limiting the environmental impact of the construction industry, but also for reducing the overall costs of the road infrastructures. Over the past years, road agencies have developed different policies to incorporate various types of recyclable material into conventional asphalt mixtures. reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is one of the most highly recycled construction materials. However, the aged RAP binder and its stiffer and brittle characteristics compared to the fresh binder may negatively affect the performance of the recycled mixture, especially when operating in cold climates. In this study, the low-temperature response of asphalt mixture prepared with single-recycled RAP (SRRAP) and double-recycled RAP (DRRAP), prepared in the laboratory, is experimentally investigated based on creep testing performed with the bending beam rheometer (BBR). Then, the data were analyzed based on three simple mathematical models to extract information on material behavior. Finally, a new indicator named thermal stress factor (TFS) on low-temperature response is proposed. Relatively poorer performance was observed from SRRAP mixture compared to the asphalt mixture prepared with virgin material. However, the low-temperature response between SRRAP and DRRAP did not present significant differences. The values of TFS support the experimental results and suggest the possibility of considering re-recycling technology for further research with the objective of a possible application in the asphalt pavement industry.

In this paper, three different rheological models including a newly developed formulation based on the current Christensen Anderson and Marateanu (CAM) model, named sigmoidal CAM model (SCM), are used to estimate the evolution of roughness, rutting, and reflective cracking in a typical composite pavement structure currently widely adopted in South Korea. Three different asphalt mixtures were prepared and dynamic modulus tests were performed. Then, the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (MEPDG) was used for predicting the progression of the pavement distress and to estimate the effect of the three different models on such phenomena. It is found that the three different mathematical models provide lower and upper limits for roughness, rutting, and reflective cracking. While the CAM model may not be entirely reliable due to its inability in fitting the data in the high-temperature domain, SCM might result in moderately more conservative pavement design.

In this paper, the possibility of using different amounts of re-recycled (repeated recycled) Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) in the asphalt mixture was experimentally investigated. First, a single virgin mixture was prepared and artificially aged to simulate the first generation of RAP to be used for designing the first generation of recycled mixtures. Next, the recycled mixtures were further aged to obtain a second generation of RAP to be mixed for preparing the second generation of recycled mixtures with and without the contribution of a rejuvenator. The fatigue behavior and low-temperature properties of all asphalt mixtures were experimentally investigated based on the cylindrical indirect tensile test (CIDT), Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR) mixture creep stiffness tests, and Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) fracture tests, respectively. Results indicate that re-recycled materials designed with and without rejuvenator show inferior fatigue behavior with respect to the first generation of recycled mixtures while exhibiting better performance than the virgin material. Meanwhile, poorer low-temperature creep properties were observed for the mixture prepared with recycled and re-recycled RAP. Fracture properties comparable with those of the virgin material were obtained only for re-recycled mixtures designed with rejuvenator. The present experimental work provides evidence on the possibility of using re-recycled RAP up to 40% when rejuvenators are included in the mix design.
