Background. Severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the etiological agent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Among the risk factors associated with the severity of this disease is the presence of several metabolic disorders. For this reason, the aim of this research was to identify the comorbidities and laboratory parameters among COVID-19 patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), comparing the patients who required invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) with those who did not require IMV, in order to determine the clinical characteristics associated with the COVID-19 severity. Methods. We carried out a cross-sectional study among 152 patients who were admitted to the ICU from April 1 st to July 31 st, 2021, in whom the comorbidities and laboratory parameters associated with the SARS-CoV-2 infection severity were identified. The data of these patients was grouped into two main groups: "patients who required IMV" and "patients who did not require IMV". The nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test for continuous data and the χ2 test for categorical data were used to compare the variables between both groups. Results. Of the 152 COVID-19 patients who were admitted to the ICU, 66 required IMV and 86 did not require IMV. Regarding the comorbidities found in these patients, a higher prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), hypertension and obesity was observed among patients who required IMV vs. those who did not require IMV ( p<0.05). Concerning laboratory parameters, only glucose, Interleukin 6 (IL-6), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and C-reactive protein (CRP) were significantly higher among patients who required IMV than in those who did not require IMV ( p<0.05). Conclusion. This study performed in a Mexican population indicates that comorbidities such as: T2DM, hypertension and obesity, as well as elevated levels of glucose, IL-6, LDH and CRP are associated with the COVID-19 severity.

This work reports the development of arrays of infrared sensors (microbolometers) using a hydrogenated polymorphous silicon-germanium alloy (pm-SixGe1-x:H). Basically, polymorphous semiconductors consist of an amorphous semiconductor matrix with embedded nanocrystals of about 2-3 nm. The pm-SixGe1-x:H alloy studied has a high temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) of 4.08%/K and conductivity of 1.5 × 10-5 Sâcm-1. Deposition of thermosensing film was made by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at 200 °C, while the area of the devices is 50 × 50 µm2 with a fill factor of 81%. Finally, an array of 19 × 20 microbolometers was packaged for electrical characterization. Voltage responsivity values were obtained in the range of 4 × 104 V/W and detectivity around 2 × 107 cmâHz1/2/W with a polarization current of 70 µA at a chopper frequency of 30 Hz. A minimum value of 2 × 10-10 W/Hz1/2 noise equivalent power was obtained at room temperature. In addition, it was found that all the tested devices responded to incident infrared radiation, proving that the structure and mechanical stability are excellent.

Recently, neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), three-dimensional structures formed of neutrophil enzymes such as neutrophil elastase (NE) and nuclear components (DNA), have been associated with progression in different types of cancer. However, data remain scarce in breast cancer. Thus, the aim of this study was to associate NETs with clinical stages of breast cancer. A prospective analysis was performed in 45 plasma samples of female patients with newly diagnosed breast cancer. NE-DNA complexes were evaluated by ELISA. Optical density was dichotomized at the median for comparisons (low and high levels of NE-DNA). The most frequent clinical stage was localized (n = 28, 62%) followed by regional (n = 13, 29%) and distant (n = 4, 9%). Higher levels of NE-DNA complexes were observed in regional and distant stages compared to localized disease (68% vs 32%, p = 0.034). No differences were observed when comparing other clinical characteristics between both groups. We demonstrated that the levels of NETs increase in proportion to the stage of the disease, observing higher levels of NE-DNA complexes in regional and metastatic disease, which coincides with the proposed mechanism by which cancer progression and metastasis might result from the formation of NETs.

BACKGROUND: In healthy subjects fibrinogen γ/γ' circulates at 8-15% of the total plasma fibrinogen concentration. Elevated levels of this variant have been associated with arterial thrombosis, and its diminution with venous thrombosis. The aims of the present work were to analyze the structure of the fibrin network formed on the top of human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HMEC-1) at different fibrinogen γ/γ' concentrations, as well as its influence on the secretion of fibrinolytic components. The kinetics of fibrin polymerization on top of HMEC-1 cells with 3, 10, and 30% fibrinogen γ/γ' was followed at 350 nm. The secretion of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) and plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI 1) by HMEC-1 were measured in the supernatant and cell lysates, after incubation with 1 nM thrombin, fibrin with 3, and 30% fibrinogen γ/γ', using commercial kits. The influence of fibrinogen γ/γ' on fibrin structure on the surface of the HMEC-1 was followed with laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). RESULTS: The kinetics of fibrin formation on HMEC-1 with 3 and 10% fibrinogen γ/γ' were similar. However, with 30% fibrinogen γ/γ' both the slope and final turbity were approximately 50% less. The LSCM images showed the dramatic effects of increasing fibrinogen γ/γ' from 3 to 30%. The uPA and PAI 1 concentrations in culture supernatants HMEC-1 cells treated with thrombin or 30% γ/γ' fibrin were two-fold increased as compared to basal culture supernatants and 3% γ/γ' fibrin-treated HMEC-1. In all stimulatory conditions the intracellular concentration of uPA was higher than in supernatants. In contrast, the intracellular PAI 1 concentration was decreased as compared to that measured in the supernatant, including the basal condition. CONCLUSION: A concentration of 30% fibrin γ/γ' alter drastically fibrin structure on the cell surface and affects the secretion of uPA and PAI 1 through its capacity to bind thrombin.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy is a global common cause of chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease. A lot of research has been conducted in biomedical sciences, which has enhanced understanding of the pathophysiology of diabetic nephropathy and has expanded the potential available therapies. An increasing number of evidence suggests that genetic alterations play a major role in development and progression of diabetic nephropathy. This systematic review was focused on searching an association between Arg913Gln variation in SLC12A3 gene with diabetic nephropathy in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and Gitelman Syndrome. METHODS: An extensive systematic review of the literature was completed using PubMed, EBSCO and Cochrane Library, from their inception to January 2018. The PRISMA guidelines were followed and the search strategy ensured that all possible studies were identified to compile the review. Inclusion criteria for this review were: 1) Studies that analyzed the SLC12A3 gene in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and Gitelman Syndrome. 2) Use of at least one analysis investigating the association between the Arg913Gln variation of SLC12A3 gene with diabetic nephropathy. 3) Use of a case-control or follow-up design. 4) Investigation of type 2 diabetes mellitus in individuals with Gitelman's syndrome, with a history of diabetic nephropathy. RESULTS: The included studies comprised 2106 individuals with diabetic nephropathy. This review shows a significant genetic association in most studies in the Arg913Gln variation of SLC12A3 gene with the diabetic nephropathy, pointing out that the mutations of this gene could be a key predictor of end-stage renal disease. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed in this systematic review contribute to better understanding of the association between the Arg913Gln variation of SLC12A3 gene with the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy in individuals with T2DM and GS.

BACKGROUND: Ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular accident, and venous thromboembolism have the presence of a thrombotic event in common and represent the most common causes of death within the population. OBJECTIVE: Since Schiff base copper(II) complexes are able to interact with polyphosphates (PolyP), a procoagulant and potentially prothrombotic platelet agent, we investigated the antiplatelet aggregating properties of two novel tridentate Schiff base ligands and their corresponding copper( II) complexes. METHODS: The Schiff base ligands (L1) and (L2), as well as their corresponding copper(II) complexes (C1) and (C2), were synthesized and characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, and UV-Visible, IR and far IR spectroscopy. In addition, EPR studies were carried out for (C1) and (C2), while (L1) and (L2) were further analyzed by 1H and 13C NMR. Tests for antiplatelet aggregation activities of all of the four compounds were conducted. RESULTS: X-ray diffraction studies show that (L1) and (L2) exist in the enol-imine tautomeric form with a strong intramolecular hydrogen bond. NMR studies show that both ligands are found as enol-imine tautomers in CDCl3 solution. In the solid state, the geometry around the copper(II) ion in both (C1) and (C2) is square planar. EPR spectra suggest that the geometry of the complexes is similar to that observed in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. Compound (C2) exhibited the strongest antiplatelet aggregation activity. CONCLUSION: Schiff base copper(II) complexes, which are attracting increasing interest, could represent a new approach to treat thrombosis by blocking the activity of PolyP with a potential anticoagulant activity and, most importantly, demonstrating no adverse bleeding events.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), also called kidney cancer or renal adenocarcinoma, is highly resistant to current treatments. It has been previously reported that a Kunitz-type inhibitor domain-containing protein, isolated from the salivary glands of the Amblyomma cajennense tick, triggers apoptosis in murine renal adenocarcinoma cells (Renca) by inhibiting the proteasome and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Of note, Amblyomin-X is the corresponding recombinant protein identified in the cDNA library from A. cajennense salivary glands. Herein, using orthotopic kidney tumors in mice, we demonstrate that Amblyomin-X is able to drastically reduce the incidence of lung metastases by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. The in vitro assays show that Amblyomin-X is capable of reducing the proliferation rate of Renca cells, promoting cell cycle arrest, and down-regulating the expression of crucial proteins (cyclin D1, Ki67 and Pgp) involved in the aggressiveness and resistance of RCC. Regarding non-tumor cells (NIH3T3), Amblyomin-X produced minor effects in the cyclin D1 levels. Interestingly, observing the image assays, the fluorescence-labelled Amblyomin-X was indeed detected in the tumor stroma whereas in healthy animals it was rapidly metabolized and excreted. Taken the findings together, Amblyomin-X can be considered as a potential anti-RCC drug candidate.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus and depression are highly prevalent conditions throughout the world and have significant impact on health outcomes. It has been estimated that diabetes mellitus type 2 affects about 246 million people in the world; nevertheless, incidence varies among countries. There is evidence that depression is associated with a poor metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus that present other health problems (such as hypertension and obesity). The aim of this study protocol is to determine if obesity increases the risk for depression in patient with diabetes type 2. METHODS: The analysis will be reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA).The studies suitable for inclusion will be assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) to determine their methodological quality. To identify the studies of interest, we will search on PubMed and EBSCO databases. We will use the following keyword combinations: "Diabetes Mellitus type 2 AND obesity AND depression", "depression AND Diabetes Mellitus type 2", "Diabetes Mellitus type 2 AND body mass index cross sectional study", "depression AND obesity cross-sectional study". Causes for exclusion will be publications that studied patients diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 1; articles that focused on the treatment and complications of diabetes mellitus type 2; publications that have studied other clinical or psychiatric conditions (for instance, seizure disorder or history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, psychotic symptoms or dementia). CONCLUSION: The results of this study will form the basis for a better understanding of the association between obesity and depression in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2, and will allow development of prediction tools and better interventions. It is evident that several modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors play an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetes among population. Currently, evidence for the deleterious effects of diabetes mellitus type 2 are based on cross-sectional or other observational designs. Therefore, this study will have important implications for future research and public health guidance.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever o perfil metabólico e antropométrico de índios Aruák (Mehináku, Waurá e Yawalapití) que habitam o Alto Xingu, Brasil Central. Em julho de 2000 e outubro de 2002, 201 indivíduos de ambos os sexos e com idade > 20 anos foram submetidos a exames físicos (antropometria e pressão arterial) e de laboratório (glicemia de jejum, lípides séricos e ácido úrico). índios do sexo masculino, quando comparados aos do sexo feminino, apresentaram valores médios menores de dobras cutâneas e de HDL colesterol, e maiores do índice de massa corporal, de circunferência do braço, de pressão arterial sistólica e diastólica, de triglicérides, de VLDL e de ácido úrico. As prevalências de sobrepeso (51,8 por cento,), obesidade (15 por cento), dislipidemia (77,1 por cento) e níveis pressóricos elevados (37,7 por cento) foram maiores entre os homens enquanto que as mulheres apresentaram maior prevalência de obesidade abdominal (52,1 por cento), independentemente da idade e da tribo de origem. Esses achados sugerem a necessidade de implementação de medidas que visem tanto ao controle como à prevenção da obesidade e outros fatores de risco cardiovasculares entre esses indivíduos.

As compared to females, males had lower mean skinfold thickness measurements and serum HDL cholesterol, and higher body mass index, arm circumference, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, serum triglycerides, VLDL cholesterol, and uric acid. The prevalence rates for overweight (51.8 percent), obesity (15 percent), dyslipidemia (77.1 percent), and hypertension (37.7 percent) were higher among men than women, but prevalence of abdominal obesity (52.1 percent) was higher among women than men, independently of age and origin. These results corroborate the need to implement measures to control and prevent obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors among these indigenous peoples.

Despite the proximity between indigenous groups in the Upper Xingu Region and Brazilian national society, studies have shown adequate weight-for-height and low height-for-age in indigenous children. Little is known about the nutritional status of indigenous adolescents. The present study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status of Kamayurá adolescents. Anthropometric variables were collected from a sample of 65 adolescents (31 males and 34 females). Mean height was lower than both that of the Brazilian National Survey on Health and Nutrition and the reference population of the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. There was a high rate of overweight in both males (38.7%) and females (23.5%), and one female adolescent was obese (2.9%). No overweight adolescent presented both the triceps and subscapular skinfolds above the 90th percentile. There were no cases of nutritional deficit among either male or female adolescents. Despite the high prevalence of overweight, the nutritional status of these adolescents is adequate, since the group presents low adiposity.

Apesar da proximidade dos grupos indígenas do Alto Xingu com a sociedade, os estudos têm mostrado adequação do peso para estatura e déficit de estatura para idade das crianças desses povos. Em relação aos adolescentes, pouco se conhece sobre suas condições nutricionais. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o estado nutricional de adolescentes Kamayurá, valendo-se de variáveis antropométricas. As medidas de peso, estatura, pregas cutâneas e circunferências corporais foram coletadas de 65 adolescentes, sendo 31 indivíduos masculinos e 34 femininos. As médias de estatura em relação à idade foram menores do que aquelas encontradas na Pesquisa Nacional sobre Saúde e Nutrição e na população de referência do National Center for Health Statistics. Houve taxa elevada de sobrepeso no sexo masculino (38,7 por cento) e no feminino (23,5 por cento); a obesidade foi encontrada em uma adolescente (2,9 por cento). Nenhum adolescente com sobrepeso apresentou ambas as pregas tricipital e subescapular acima do percentil 90. Não houve casos de déficit nutricional em adolescentes de ambos os sexos. Apesar da alta prevalência de sobrepeso, o estado nutricional dos adolescentes em estudo é adequado, dada a baixa adiposidade.

Este estudo teve por objetivo avaliar o estado nutricional, incluindo a prevalência de anemia, de crianças Kamaiurá, povo indígena do Alto Xingu, Brasil Central. Foram estudadas 112 crianças menores de dez anos de idade em 2000/2001. O perfil do crescimento infantil foi descrito segundo a distribuição dos índices altura/idade e peso/altura expressos em escore-z da população de referência do National Center of Health Statistics - NCHS. Os diagnósticos de déficit de altura e da relação peso/altura e o diagnóstico de obesidade corresponderam, respectivamente, aos valores abaixo de -2 escores-z de altura/idade e peso/altura e aos valores acima de 2 escores-z de peso/altura. O diagnóstico de anemia foi determinado a partir de concentrações de hemoglobina sérica inferiores a 11 g/dl para crianças entre seis meses e cinco anos de idade e inferiores a 11,5 g/dl para as crianças com idade entre cinco e dez anos incompletos, conforme recomendação da OMS. Aproximadamente um terço das crianças apresentou déficit de crescimento, enquanto déficit de peso/altura e obesidade não foram diagnosticados entre elas. A anemia esteve presente em mais da metade das crianças índias estudadas, 15 por cento delas apresentando anemia grave. Há necessidade de implementação de ações que visem a melhoria das condições socioambientais, de saúde e nutrição desse povo indígena.
In order to evaluate nutritional and anemic status, 112 Indian children (Kamaiurá), aged from 0 to 119.9 months, from the Alto Xingu region of central Brazil were studied in 2000/2001. The international growth reference - NCHS was used to evaluate height and weight, according to the child's age and gender. Growth deficit (stunting) and low weight status (wasting) were determined when height-for-age and weight-for-height indices were below _2 z scores, respectively, and obesity status when the weight-for-height index was above 2 z scores. Stunting was observed in 1/3 of the children and neither wasting nor obesity were observed. The anemic status was diagnosed by hemoglobin values below 11 g/dl for children from 6 to 59 months of age, and below 11.5 g/dl, for children from 60 to 119.9 months. About 50 percent of the Indian children were anemic and 15 percent were affected by severe anemia. Violência tem sido considerada uma das mais importantes causas de morte entre a população jovem, particularmente nos grandes centros urbanos. O objetivo deste trabalho é descrever as principais causas de mortes violentas entre os jovens de São Paulo. Os dados estatísticos de mortalidade foram fornecidos pelo PRO-AIM. Jovens do sexo masculino apresentaram 21 vezes mais probabilidade de morrer por homicídio, especialmente nas regiões de baixo nível socioeconômico. Possíveis explicações para esses fatos em São Paulo são fornecidas
