RESUMO
OBJECTIVES: The reduction in size of these systems, which increases their reliability, biocompatibility and robustness, is essential to the complete implantation of the VADs, which is the main focus of the current state of art. Continuous flow VADs are actuated by brushless motors due to their reliability. The objective of the current project was to implement and simulate sensorless speed control in order to actuate VAD. METHODS: In order to increase the robustness of the system even further, a strategy that does not use Hall sensors can be implemented. The sensorless strategy to control speed that was implemented in this work aims to detect the position of the rotor by using the coil of the inactive phase in order to sense the variation in magnetic flux, which comes in the form of back-electromotive forces. RESULTS: A three phase inverter to electrically commute the motor's phases, a conditioning circuit that obtains the back-electromotive forces and a speed controller were developed. The speed control and the commutation logic were implemented by using a microcontroller. The results that were obtained in computational simulations indicated that the three-phase inverter, the commutation logic and the controller reached the project requirements. The implemented microcontroller commutation logic presented the expected behavior. Commutation signals were obtained in six stages, necessary for the correct activation of the phases of the brushless motor. The controller was validated in terms of its step response, demonstrating low overshoot and fast control action in the system. CONCLUSIONS: To further enhance the robustness of the system, an alternative strategy that eliminates the use of Hall sensors can be employed. The sensorless speed control strategy, implemented in this study, detects the position of the rotor by measuring variations in magnetic flux through the coil of the inactive phase, thus relying on back-electromotive forces for detection.

Ultrasonography is a noninvasive complementary exam that is still rarely used in the preputial evaluation and without detailed descriptions of the bovine free end of the penis. The purpose of this study was to standardize preputial ultrasonography in one-year-old healthy Nelore cattle, describing the main acoustic windows, the viability of using contrast in the preputial cavity and the best positioning of the animal for performing the ultrasound examination. The scanning was performed with the animals in standing and decubitus position. Five acoustic windows were determined from the preputial ostium to the preputial fornix, at the free end of the penis. The scans were performed in longitudinal, transverse and dorsal planes, before and after infiltration of 0.9% saline solution into the preputial cavity. As conclusions, the ultrasound examination is able to identify the internal layer and the free part of the penis in all proposed planes and acoustic windows. The best landmark is the identification of the glans. Furthermore, standing positioning is the most appropriate to perform the exam and the use of contrast is recommended for topographic delimitation of the structures.(AU)

The objective of this study was to describe vascular net of bovine digit before and after intrarruminal administration of oligofructose, with the use of venography. Six animals sorted in two groups (GI and GII) that received 13 and 17g/kg of oligofructose respectively were used. Digits venography were done in four moments: 15 days before (M0) and 36 hours (M1), seven days (M2) and 30 days (M3) after administration of oligofructose. Width of visualized veins and evaluated possible blood flow vessels suppression was measured. The width was evaluated by ANOVA and T test (5%). In M0 25 structures were identified, including veins, arteries and vascular net in radiographic images. Veins measured were: common digital III and dorsal of distal phalanx and plantar branches to digital cushion of lateral and medial digits. Only V. digital dorsal common III presented higher width after 36 hours and constriction with 30 days (P≤0.05) of oligofructose administration. Comparing moments, vessel dilation on M1 and constriction on other moments. Measurement of vessel width didn´t suffer interference when groups were compared. Venography of bovine digits allowed for the study and identification of changes in vascularization.(AU)

PURPOSE: Back pain affects people of all ages. This may be associated with physical inactivity, and in the case of physical activity in different domains, the relationship with back pain is not clear in the literature. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of low back and neck pain and investigate their association in different domains of physical inactivity. METHODS: 1011 randomly selected students participated in this study. Neck and back pain were assessed using the Nordic questionnaire, whereas the Baecke Physical Activity questionnaire was used to measure physical activity domains. Separate Binary Logistic Regression models were performed to investigate the association of physical activity domains with neck or back pain. RESULTS: 17.4% of the students reported cervical pain, while 18.0% reported low back pain. Older adolescents had a higher prevalence of cervical pain (24.4%) than younger adolescents (11.9%) (p value <0.001), as well as lumbar pain, being 25.1% in older adolescents and 12.4% in younger (p value <0.001). Adolescents physically inactive in the school environment were less likely to have pain in the cervical region [OR 0.67 (0.44-0.99)] or back pain [OR 0.60 (0.40-0.91)]. Being inactive in occupational activities was associated with cervical pain [OR 1.49 (1.06-2.10)]. Being inactive in the sports environment presented a marginal relationship with pain in the cervical region [OR 1.41 (0.99-2.02)]. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of neck and low back pain was higher in older adolescents and physical inactivity in the sporting context and occupational activities could be a risk factor to increase the chances of back pain.

Ten forelimbs of five Myrmecophaga tridactyla were examined to study the anatomy of the brachial plexus. The brachial plexuses of the M. tridactyla observed in the present study were formed by the ventral rami of the last four cervical spinal nerves, C5 through C8, and the first thoracic spinal nerve, T1. These primary roots joined to form two trunks: a cranial trunk comprising ventral rami from C5-C7 and a caudal trunk receiving ventral rami from C8-T1. The nerves originated from these trunks and their most constant arrangement were as follows: suprascapular (C5-C7), subscapular (C5-C7), cranial pectoral (C5-C8), caudal pectoral (C8-T1), axillary (C5-C7), musculocutaneous (C5-C7), radial (C5-T1), median (C5-T1), ulnar (C5-T1), thoracodorsal (C5-C8), lateral thoracic (C7-T1) and long thoracic (C6-C7). In general, the brachial plexus in the M. tridactyla is similar to the plexuses in mammals, but the number of rami contributing to the formation of each nerve in the M. tridactyla was found to be larger than those of most mammals. This feature may be related to the very distinctive anatomical specializations of the forelimb of the anteaters.

The lesser anteater (Tamandua tetradactyla) is a xenarthra of the Myrmecophagidae family found from Venezuela to southern Brazil. Studies have shown that this is one of the most numerous wildlife species victims of car collisions on roads, and often the appropriate clinical care to injured animals is hindered by the lack of information about them. In order to contribute to the knowledge of this species, this study aimed to describe its lumbosacral plexus. For this purpose, four cadavers of adult specimens of both sexes of T. tetradactyla were used. The lumbosacral plexus of the T. tetradactyla is formed by the ventral rami of spinal nerves T18, L1, L2, L3, S1, S2, S3, S4, S5. The lumbar and sacral plexus of this species is joined, L3 being the link between them. Due to the small number of lumbar vertebrae, the arrangement of the lumbosacral plexus nerves of the T. tetradactyla showed peculiar characteristics that differ it from that of other previously studied species, such as the absence of iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves and contribution of thoracic nerves in the formation of all the nerves of the lumbar plexus, presence of sacral contribution in the formation of the obturator nerve, and the lack of lumbar contribution for sciatic nerve formation and a most caudal extent of the sacral plexus.(AU)

Flexibility is a key component of physical fitness. It has been suggested that measures of physical fitness components may vary throughout the day. The aim of this study was to analyse the effects of the time of day on flexibility performance. 26 men (mean age=25.4 years, SD=2.5) were evaluated by hip flexion on kinematic analysis and also by an absolute score in the modified Sit-and-Reach test during a repeated measure design. This was done during 3 experimental sessions, which took place at 8:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., in random order. All subjects were previously familiarized with the test parameters. There was a diurnal variation only in the modified Sit-and-Reach test score between 8:00 a.m and 6:00 p.m. (P=0.01). There was no significant difference in the hip kinematic analysis between hours. These findings suggest that flexibility performance in the modified Sit-and-Reach test, in absolute scores, is affected by the time of day, with higher performance in the evening.

UNLABELLED: The effectiveness of facial exercises therapy for facial palsy has been debated in systematic reviews but its effects are still not totally explained. OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review with meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of facial exercise therapy for facial palsy. DATA SOURCES: A search was performed in the following databases: Cochrane Controlled Trials Register Library, Cochrane Disease Group Trials Register, MEDLINE, EMBASE, LILACS, PEDro, Scielo and DARE from 1966 to 2010; the following keywords were used: 'idiopathic facial palsy', 'facial paralysis', 'Bell's palsy', 'physical therapy', 'exercise movement techniques', 'facial exercises', 'mime therapy' 'facial expression', 'massage' and 'randomized controlled trials'. REVIEW METHODS: The inclusion criteria were studies with facial exercises, associated or not with mirror biofeedback, to treat facial palsy. RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-two studies were found but only six met the inclusion criteria. All the studies were evaluated by two independent reviewers, following the recommendations of Cochrane Collaboration Handbook for assessment of risk of bias (kappa coefficient = 0.8). Only one study presented sufficient data to perform the meta-analysis, and significant improvements in functionality was found for the experimental group (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 13.90; 95% confidence interval (CI) 4.31, 23.49; P = 0.005). CONCLUSION: Facial exercise therapy is effective for facial palsy for the outcome functionality.

Placental and breastfeeding transfer of soy isoflavones are potential routes for animal and human exposure to phytoestrogens, and reproductive dysfunctions have been linked to early exposure to these compounds. So, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of perinatal (intrauterine and lactational) exposure to soy-containing diet and soy-derived isoflavones on the reproductive parameters of male rabbits. For this purpose, 12 female rabbits were randomly assigned to receive: (1) a soy- and alfalfa-free diet (control diet); (2) a soy- and alfalfa-free diet supplemented with 10 mg/kg body wt/day of soy isoflavones; (3) a soy- and alfalfa-free diet supplemented with 20 mg/kg body wt/day of soy isoflavones; and (4) a diet containing 18% of soy meal, throughout gestation and lactation. Weight and morphology of the reproductive organs of some of the male offspring were evaluated at weaning (between days 29 and 31). The remaining males were placed on the control diet from weaning to adulthood (gestational and lactational exposure only). Sexual behaviour, semen quality and reproductive organs' morphology were evaluated after puberty. There were no significant differences in litter size and gestation duration between control and treatment groups. Perinatal exposure to soy-containing diet and soy isoflavones did not alter testis, epididymides, proprostate and prostate weight and gross morphology. After puberty, sexual behaviour and semen parameters did not differ significantly from the control group. These results indicate that intrauterine and lactational exposure to soy-containing diet and soy-derived isoflavones may not adversely affect reproductive development and function of male rabbits.

The aim of the study was to compare the fatigue rates of the deltoid muscle portions in the scapular and frontal planes. Ten healthy men without shoulder muscle impairment took part in the study. They performed isometric arm abduction for 30 seconds against a resistance of load cell while the electromyographic data were collected. The electromyographic data were transformed by the Fast Fourier Transform, to obtain the median power frequency (MDPF). The changes in MDPF of the three deltoid portions in the scapular and frontal planes were compared. The acromialis and spinalis portions fatigued during the exercises. The clavicularis portion presented no fatigue. A statistically significant difference occurred between the clavicularis and the other two portions (P < 0.05). No differences were found when the planes were compared. It represents to practice no preferential order during rehabilitation. Moreover, the acromialis and spinalis portions fatigue, although the clavicularis portion did not fatigue. The actions of other muscles of the shoulder girdle can explain this fact. Moreover, these two portions need more attention to avoid fatigue during exercises. In general, therapeutic strategies for injured patients should not only be directed towards increased force, but also towards fatigue control during shoulder exercises.

We sought to assess clinical, epidemiological, biochemical, serological and histological characteristics of anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive female blood donors and compare them with men. As women are frequently the minority among blood donors, studies evaluating this population usually reflect characteristics of male gender. This retrospective study included 380 blood donors with confirmed positive anti-HCV. The mean age was 36.9 +/- 11.3 years and 33.2% were women. Compared with men, female donors showed higher prevalence of prior transfusion of blood products (P = 0.031) and lower prevalence of intravenous drug use (P = 0.001) and alcohol abuse (P < 0.001). Women exhibited lower medians of alanine aminotransferase (P < 0.001) and gamma-glutamyltransferase (P < 0.001). They also showed higher platelet count (P < 0.001) and prothrombin activity (P = 0.049), and a lower frequency of antibody against core antigen of hepatitis B virus (anti-HBc) positivity (P = 0.032). A higher proportion of spontaneous viral clearance (P = 0.001) and a lower frequency of viraemia (P < 0.001) were observed among women. On liver biopsy, women had lower prevalence of fibrosis stage > or = 2. Multivariate analysis identified age (OR = 1.050, 95% CI: 1.019-1.081, P = 0.001) and anti-HBc positivity (OR = 2.184, 95% CI: 1.010-4.722, P = 0.047) as independent predictors of significant fibrosis. Female blood donors presented higher prevalence of spontaneous viral clearance as well as biochemical and histological evidence of less advanced liver disease. These findings could be because of intrinsic characteristics of female gender or secondary to associated factors such as younger age or anti-HBc positivity.

BACKGROUND: The sit-and-reach test (SRT) is used to measure the flexibility of the lumbar spine and hamstring muscles and is better when the hip joint angle (HJA) is measured concomitantly. OBJECTIVE: To assess the intra and interobserver reliability of the SRT for measuring hamstring muscle length through angular kinematic analysis. METHOD: Fifty university students (X= 21.5 years; SD= 1.5) without musculoskeletal abnormalities took part. A standard SRT bench with a door (to assess the action of the gastrocnemius muscles) and a digital photographic camera positioned on a tripod were used. Skin markers were placed on the anterosuperior iliac spine and greater trochanter. Two images were recorded: one with the door closed (DC) and another with the door open (DO). To test the intra and interobserver reliability, the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (random effect with one factor) and the Bland and Altman concordance test (d= mean difference between measurements) were used, with the respective 95 percent confidence intervals (95 percent CI). RESULTS: The intraobserver reliability of the HJA test was: ICCdc= 0.97 (95 percent CI [0.95;0.99]) and Bland and Altman d = -0.02 (95 percent CI [-0.11;0.07]); ICCdo = 0.98 (95 percent CI [0.96;0.99]), d = -0.01 (95 percent CI [-0.11;0.08]). For the interobserver reliability: ICCdc= 0.96 (95 percent CI [0.94;0.98]) and d = -0.07 (95 percent CI [-0.19;0.03]); ICCdo= 0.96 (95 percent CI [0.93;0.98] and d = -0.06 (95 percent CI [-0.19;0.52]. CONCLUSION: The intra and interobserver reliability tests (DC and DO) for HJA assessment using kinematic analysis showed high reliability. The technique is easy to apply (only requiring a standard SRT bench and a photographic camera) and provides a reliable method for measuring hamstring muscles using kinematic analysis in clinical practice.

Soy and derivative diets deliver large doses of isoflavones to human and animals throughout their lifespan, including gestation. Epidemiologic and experimental data suggest that the consumption of soybean containing foods may protect against cardiovascular disease and decrease breast, prostate and endometrial cancer risk. Based on animal and in vitro studies, however, concerns have been raised that consumption of isoflavones may cause potential adverse effects on the reproductive tract and behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chronic consumption of a soy meal containing diet or soy isoflavones supplement on the morphology of reproductive organs, semen quality, age that males reached puberty, and sexual behavior of male rabbits. With this purpose, 16 female rabbits were randomly assigned to receive: (1) a soy- and alfalfa-free diet; (2) a soy- and alfalfa-free diet supplemented with 5mg/kg body wt./day of soy isoflavones; (3) a soy- and alfalfa-free diet supplemented with 20mg/kg body wt./day of soy isoflavones; (4) a diet containing 18% of soy meal, throughout the gestation and lactation. After weaning, male offspring received the same diet, which was given to the respective mother. The age that males reached puberty, semen characteristics and sexual behavior were evaluated in these animals. At 33 weeks of age, the reproductive organs were submitted to histological evaluation. Rabbits, which received large amounts of isoflavones (20mg/kg body wt./day) had a lesser food intake, body weight and semen volume. Spermatogenesis, morphology of male genital organs and sexual behavior did not differ significantly from the control group. We conclude that chronic dietary treatment with soy based diet or soy isoflavones have no adverse effects on the observed reproductive patterns of male rabbits.
