RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Canadian-born children of South Asian [SA] ethnicity develop inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] at similar rates to those among Caucasian children. We evaluated the variation in phenotypic spectrum of IBD in SA and Caucasian children in a national paediatric inception cohort of new-onset IBD. METHODS: Patients aged <17 years, enrolled in a Canadian nationwide inception cohort study, were included. Baseline demographic and IBD phenotypic features were compared between SA and Caucasian children. Longitudinal outcomes through 18 months of follow-up were compared matched by propensity scores. RESULTS: Of 1156 children enrolled over 2014 to 2019, 623 were Caucasian [98% and 88% parents Canadian born] and 114 SA [79% Canadian born, 87% parents SA born]. Fewer SAs have a first-degree relative with IBD, 6% vs 19% in Caucasians, p = 0.002. SAs present at a younger age, median age 11.4 years (interquartile range [IQR] 9.2-14.3) vs 13 years [IQR 10.9-15 years], p = 0.03 and more commonly with a UC/IBD-U [ulcerative colitis/IBD-unclassified] subtype [ratio of UC/IBD-U to CD 1.2:1 vs 1:1.8 for Caucasians, p <0.001]. Additionally, a greater proportion of SA CD patients present with colonic-only disease [colonic-only CD/UC/IBD-U in SAs 67% vs 57% for Caucasians, p = 0.001], and among those with CD, colonic CD in SAs 31% vs 23% in Caucasians, p = 0.20]. Perianal fistulising disease was also numerically more common in SAs (14 [27%] vs 64 [18%], p = 0.06]. Adjusting for differences in phenotypic presentation, anti-tumour necrosis factor [TNF] exposure, and time to initiation was similar, and two-thirds of children, whether anti-TNF exposed or naïve, were in corticosteroid-free clinical remission at 18 months irrespective of ethnicity. CONCLUSIONS: The phenotypic spectrum of new-onset IBD in SA children differs from that of Caucasian children, but treatment and clinical course are similar within phenotypic subgroups.

RESUMO

A large number of New Zealanders participate in sport, either formally or informally; sporting injuries are common. In New Zealand, the Accident Rehabilitation & Compensation Insurance Corporation (ACC) is the main organisation that covers sports-related dental claims. Rugby union claims are the most common. The ACC's national data from 1993 to 1996 relating to dental claims for sports injuries (excluding rugby union) were analysed. This study identified 45 other sports in which participants are also at risk for dental injuries. Total claims per sport for each year were determined, and the "top 10" sports for claims per year were identified and compared for any change over the years studied. The top 10 sports for 1993 and 1994 were, in descending order: swimming, rugby league, basketball, cricket, hockey, soccer, netball, squash, softball-baseball, and tennis. Data for 1995 and 1996 revealed a similar trend, except that touch rugby displaced tennis as the tenth-ranked sport. The most common age group for claims was the age group 10-19 years, with a male:female ratio of approximately 2:1. Many sports, in addition to rugby union, place their participants at risk of dental injury. Awareness of prevention of dental injuries should be more widely promoted for all sports.

RESUMO

When information about three-dimensional shape obtained from shading and shadows is ambiguous, the visual system favours an interpretation of surface geometry which is consistent with illumination from above. If pictures of top-lit faces are rotated the resulting stimulus is both figurally inverted and illuminated from below. In this study the question of whether the effects of figural inversion and lighting orientation on face recognition are independent or interactive is addressed. Although there was a clear inversion effect for faces illuminated from the front and above, the inversion effect was found to be reduced or eliminated for faces illuminated from below. A strong inversion effect for photographic negatives was also found but in this case the effect was not dependent on the direction of illumination. These findings are interpreted as evidence to suggest that lighting faces from below disrupts the formation of surface-based representations of facial shape.

RESUMO

Fast atom bombardment mass spectrometric methodologies for carbohydrate structure determination are intimately linked to classical procedures such as derivatization and hydrolysis. This paper reviews the current status of carbohydrate fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and reports on two new protocols which we are using to optimize sensitivity and fragmentation.
