RESUMO

We propose a paraxial dual-cone model of conical refraction involving the interference of two cones of light behind the exit face of the crystal. The supporting experiment is based on beam selecting elements breaking down the conically refracted beam into two separate hollow cones which are symmetrical with one another. The shape of these cones of light is a product of a 'competition' between the divergence caused by the conical refraction and the convergence due to the focusing by the lens. The developed mathematical description of the conical refraction demonstrates an excellent agreement with experiment.

For artificial intelligence research to progress beyond the highly specialized task-dependent implementations achievable today, researchers may need to incorporate aspects of biological behavior that have not traditionally been associated with intelligence. Affective processes such as emotions may be crucial to the generalized intelligence possessed by humans and animals. A number of robots and autonomous agents have been created that can emulate human emotions, but the majority of this research focuses on the social domain. In contrast, we have developed a hybrid reactive/deliberative architecture that incorporates artificial emotions to improve the general adaptive performance of a mobile robot for a navigation task. Emotions are active on multiple architectural levels, modulating the robot's decisions and actions to suit the context of its situation. Reactive emotions interact with the robot's control system, altering its parameters in response to appraisals from short-term sensor data. Deliberative emotions are learned associations that bias path planning in response to eliciting objects or events. Quantitative results are presented that demonstrate situations in which each artificial emotion can be beneficial to performance.

Although aerobic degradation of ethylene glycol is well documented, only anaerobic biodegradation via methanogenesis or fermentation has been clearly shown. Enhanced ethylene glycol degradation has been demonstrated by microorganisms in the rhizosphere of shallow-rooted plants such as alfalfa and grasses where conditions may be aerobic, but has not been demonstrated in the deeper rhizosphere of poplar or willow trees where conditions are more likely to be anaerobic. This study evaluated ethylene glycol degradation under nitrate-, and sulphate-reducing conditions by microorganisms from the rhizosphere of poplar and willow trees planted in the path of a groundwater plume containing up to 1.9 mol l(-1) (120 g l(-1)) ethylene glycol and, the effect of fertilizer addition when nitrate or sulphate was provided as a terminal electron acceptor (TEA). Microorganisms in these rhizosphere soils degraded ethylene glycol using nitrate or sulphate as TEAs at close to the theoretical stoichiometric amounts required for mineralization. Although the added nitrate or sulphate was primarily used as TEA, TEAs naturally present in the soil or CO(2) produced from ethylene glycol degradation were also used, demonstrating multiple TEA usage. Anaerobic degradation produced acetaldehyde, less acetic acid, and more ethanol than under aerobic conditions. Although aerobic degradation rates were faster, close to 100% disappearance was eventually achieved anaerobically. Degradation rates under nitrate-reducing conditions were enhanced upon fertilizer addition to achieve rates similar to aerobic degradation with up to 19.3 mmol (1.20 g) of ethylene glycol degradation l(-1) day(-1) in poplar soils. This is the first study to demonstrate that microorganisms in the rhizosphere of deep rooted trees like willow and poplar can anaerobically degrade ethylene glycol. Since anaerobic biodegradation may significantly contribute to the phytoremediation of ethylene glycol in the deeper subsurface, the need for "pump and treat" or an aerobic treatment would be eliminated, hence reducing the cost of treatment.

Optically guided neuron growth is a relatively new field where the exact mechanisms that initiate growth are not well understood. Both Gaussian light beams and optical line traps have been purported to initiate neuronal growth. Here we present a detailed study using optical line traps with symmetric and asymmetric intensity profiles which have been previously reported to bias the direction of neuronal growth. In contrast to these previous studies, we show similar levels of growth regardless of the direction of the intensity variation along the line trap. Furthermore, our experimental observations confirm previous suggestions that the filopodia produced from neuronal growth cones can be affected by laser light. We experimentally observe alignment of filopodia with the laser field and present a theoretical model describing the optical torques experienced by filopodia to explain this effect.

The results presented in this paper document healing of different types of extremity wounds with 890 nanometer (nm) monochromatic infrared energy. Recalcitrant dermal lesions, including venous ulcers, diabetic ulcers, and a wound related to scleroderma, were treated with a Food and Drug Administration-cleared infrared device. The infrared protocol was instituted after conventional management protocols were shown to be ineffective. The rate and quality of healing of these previously refractory wounds, following use of monochromatic infrared energy, may be related to local increases in nitric oxide concentration. Increases in nitric oxide previously have been demonstrated to correlate with vasodilatory and anabolic responses. Further research is needed to confirm the results found in these patients.
