RESUMO

A study is presented on the control of rotary motion of an appending rotor unit in a light-driven molecular motor. Two new light driven molecular motors were synthesized that contain aryl groups connected to the stereogenic centers. The aryl groups behave as bidirectional free rotors in three of the four isomers of the 360° rotation cycle, but rotation of the rotors is hindered in the fourth isomer. Kinetic studies of both motor and rotor functions of the two new compounds are given, using (1)H NMR, 2D-EXSY NMR, and UV-vis spectroscopy. In addition, we present the development of a new method for introducing a range of aryl substituents at the α-carbon of precursors for molecular motors. The present study shows how the molecular system can be photochemically switched between a state of free rotor rotation and a state of hindered rotation and reveals the dynamics of coupled rotary systems.

RESUMO

Molecular self-assembly is the basis for the formation of numerous artificial nanostructures. The self-organization of peptides, amphiphilic molecules composed of fused benzene rings and other functional molecules into nanotubes is of particular interest. However, the design of dynamic, complex self-organized systems that are responsive to external stimuli remains a significant challenge. Here, we report self-assembled, vesicle-capped nanotubes that can be selectively disassembled by irradiation. The walls of the nanotubes are 3-nm-thick bilayers and are made from amphiphilic molecules with two hydrophobic legs that interdigitate when the molecules self-assemble into bilayers. In the presence of phospholipids, a phase separation between the phospholipids and the amphiphilic molecules creates nanotubes, which are end-capped by vesicles that can be chemically altered or removed and reattached without affecting the nanotubes. The presence of a photoswitchable and fluorescent core in the amphiphilic molecules allows fast and highly controlled disassembly of the nanotubes on irradiation, and distinct disassembly processes can be observed in real time using fluorescence microscopy.

RESUMO

We evaluated the effectiveness of diabetes mellitus disease management, implemented in Modena province since ten years, on the prevention of complications and early diagnoses at a population level. Time trends show that diabetic patients had significantly decreasing values over time of age, diabetes duration, and glycated haemoglobin; and increasing percentage over time of new-onset diabetes and optimal glycaemic control. That indicates an improved ability of early diagnosis and care of diabetes mellitus. It indicates at a population level that the Local Health Unit, as health system, promoted diabetes prevention and its complications.

RESUMO

Dithienylperhydrocyclopentene-bisurea-based low molecular weight gelators are described that function as photoresponsive organogels that show a remarkable gel-to-liquid transition upon irradiation. The two series of derivatives, with and without alkyl spacers between the urea hydrogen bonding groups and the photochromic unit, show different gelation behavior. Upon UV irradiation of the gels, a gel liquified at only 1.4% conversion of the photochromic unit. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the gel fibres consist of thin ribbons. Semi-empirical (PM3) calculations indicate that the hydrogen bonding between the open-ring isomer (o) molecules is weak, and that formation of the closed-ring isomer (c) destabilises the hydrogen bonding further. The results indicate that a small amount of the closed-ring isomer will disrupt the intermolecular hydrogen-bonding, leading to disintegration of the gel fibre ribbons and hence reversible liquification.

RESUMO

Medication errors occur frequently in many clinical settings. Various studies have highlighted that, together with adverse drug events, they represent one of the major causes of adverse events occurring in hospitals. The aim of this study was to perform a detailed retrospective medical record review in order to investigate the incidence of medication errors occurring in the prescription and transcription phases of the medication use process. Overall, 56 medical records were reviewed to determine the incidence of incomplete or incorrect prescriptions and incorrect transcription by nurses of the original medication order. The findings highlight the need to improve medication safety, in particular at the time of prescription and transcription of orders. The study also confirms that the retrospective review of medical records is an effective method for identifying certain types of medication errors that occur during the prescription and transcription phases. However, this type of review is complex and too costly to be used routinely, for continuous monitoring, in clinical practice.
