RESUMO
Objective: In this study, we assess the delivery of congenital pediatric surgical care under Brazil's system of universal health coverage and evaluate differences in delivery between public and private sectors. Methods: A cross-sectional national survey of pediatric surgeons in Brazil was conducted. Participants were asked which of 23 interventions identified through the Disease Control Priorities 3 (Surgical Interventions for Congenital Anomalies) they perform and to report barriers faced while providing surgical care. Responses were weighted by state and stratified by sector (public vs private). Results: A sample of 352 responses was obtained and weighted to represent 1378 practicing pediatric surgeons registered in Brazil during the survey time. 73% spend the majority of their time working in the public sector ('Sistema Único de Saúde' and Foundation hospitals), and most of them also work in the private sector. Generally, Brazilian pediatric surgeons have the expertise to provide thoracic, abdominal, and urologic procedures. Surgeons working mostly in the public sector were more likely to report a lack of access to essential medications (25% vs 9%, p<0.01) and a lack of access to hospital beds for surgical patients (52% vs 32%, p<0.01). Conclusions: Brazilian pediatric surgeons routinely perform thoracic, abdominal, and urologic surgery. Those working in government-financed hospitals face barriers related to infrastructure, which may impact Brazilians who rely on Brazil's universal health coverage system. Policies that support pediatric surgeons working in the public sector may promote the workforce available to provide congenital pediatric surgical care.
RESUMO
Tetragonisca angustula honey was fractioned in a SiO2 column to furnish three fractions (A-C) in which four hydroxycinnamic acid-Spermidine amides (HCAAs), known as N', Nâ³, Nâ´-tris-p-coumaroyl spermidine, N', Nâ³-dicaffeoyl, Nâ´-coumaroyl spermidine, N', Nâ³, Nâ´-tris-caffeoyl spermidine and N', Nâ³-dicaffeoyl and Nâ´-feruloyl spermidine were identified in the fractions B and C by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. A primary culture model previously infected with Neospora caninum (72 h) was used to evaluate the honey fractions (A-C) for two-time intervals: 24 and 72 h. Parasitic reduction ranged from 38% on fraction C (12.5 µg/ml), after 24 h, to 54% and 41% with fractions B and C (25 µg/ml) after 72 h of treatment, respectively. Additionally, HCAAs did not show any cell toxicity for 24 and 72 h. For infected cultures (72 h), the active fractions B (12.5 µg/ml) and C (25 µg/ml) decreased their NO content. In silico studies suggest that HCAAs may affect the parasite's redox pathway and improve the oxidative effect of NO released from infected cells. Here, we presented for the first time, that HCAAs from T. angustula honey have the potential to inhibit the growth of N. caninum protozoa.

The global spread of the parasitic Varroa mite has introduced a new bee to the bee horizontal transmission route for several RNA viruses that bypasses existing barriers in honey bees. From among these viruses, deformed wing virus (DWV) is now among the most widespread insect pathogens in the world. Brazilian stingless bees are a diverse group often managed in close proximity to honey bees. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence and load of DWV in 21 stingless bee (Melipona subnitida) and 26 honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies from Brazil. DWV was detected in all colonies with DWV-A and DWV-C dominating in M. subnitida, while DWV-A dominated in A. mellifera. Average total viral loads per bee were 8.8E+07 and 6.3E+07 in M. subnitida and A. mellifera, respectively, which are much lower than DWV levels (>1E+10) found in honey bees in the northern hemisphere. In colonies introduced 30 years ago to the remote island of Fernando de Noronha, the DWV load was low (<1E+03) in honey bees but we detected higher loads (1.6E+08) in all M. subnitida colonies on the island. This may suggest that minimal, if any, viral transmission of DWV from stingless bees to honey bees has occurred on this island. Furthermore, the ubiquitous presence of the DWV-C variant in M. subnitida colonies, and its rarity in A. mellifera, may again suggest that limited viral exchange between these two species is occurring.

Swarm-founding 'Warrior wasps' (Synoeca spp.) are found throughout the tropical regions of South America, are much feared due to their aggressive nest defence and painful sting. There are only five species of Synoeca, all construct distinctive nests that consist of a single sessile comb built onto the surface of a tree or rock face, which is covered by a ribbed envelope. Although locally common, research into this group is just starting. We studied eight colonies of Synoeca septentrionalis, a species recently been described from Brazil. A new colony is established by a swarm of 52 to 140 adults that constructs a colony containing around 200 brood cells. The largest colony collected containing 865 adults and over 1400 cells. The number of queen's present among the eight colonies varied between 3 and 58 and no clear association between colony development and queen number was detected. Workers and queens were morphologically indistinguishably, but differences in their cuticular hydrocarbons were detected, particularly in their (Z)-9-alkenes. The simple cuticular profile, multiple queens, large size and small number of species makes the 'Warrior wasps' an excellent model group for further chemical ecology studies of swarm-founding wasps.

Our understanding of the role of cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC) in recognition is based largely on temperate ant species and honey bees. The stingless bees remain relatively poorly studied, despite being the largest group of eusocial bees, comprising more than 400 species in some 60 genera. The Meliponini and Apini diverged between 80-130 Myr B.P. so the evolutionary trajectories that shaped the chemical communication systems in ants, honeybees and stingless bees may be very different. The aim of this study was to study if a unique species CHC signal existed in Neotropical stingless bees, as has been shown for many temperate species, and what compounds are involved. This was achieved by collecting CHC data from 24 colonies belonging to six species of Melipona from North-Eastern Brazil and comparing the results with previously published CHC studies on Melipona. We found that each of the eleven Melipona species studied so far each produced a unique species CHC signal based around their alkene isomer production. A remarkable number of alkene isomers, up to 25 in M. asilvai, indicated the diversification of alkene positional isomers among the stingless bees. The only other group to have really diversified in alkene isomer production are the primitively eusocial Bumblebees (Bombus spp), which are the sister group of the stingless bees. Furthermore, among the eleven Neotropical Melipona species we could detect no effect of the environment on the proportion of alkane production as has been suggested for some other species.

The bee Melipona scutellaris is considered the reared meliponine species with the largest distribution in the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, with records from the state of Rio Grande do Norte down to the state of Bahia. Considering the importance of this species in the generation of income for family agriculture and in the preservation of areas with natural vegetation, this study aimed at providing knowledge on the distribution of natural colonies of M. scutellaris in the state of Bahia. Literature information, interviews with stinglessbee beekeepers, and expeditions were conducted to confirm the natural occurrence of the species. A total of 102 municipalities showed records for M. scutellaris, whose occurrence was observed in areas ranging from sea level up to 1,200-meter height. The occurrence of this species in the state of Bahia is considered to be restricted to municipalities on the coastal area and the Chapada Diamantina with its rainforests. Geographic coordinates, elevation, climate and vegetation data were obtained, which allowed a map to be prepared for the area of occurrence in order to support conservation and management policies for the species.

Generalist foraging behavior among stingless bees is accepted but untested, as well as the subsidiary hypothesis of floral preferences in the genus Melipona. Here we analyzed those hypotheses comparing the use of floral sources of pollen, through paired analyses of pollen samples from different colonies of Melipona scutellaris Latreille, in three areas of the Atlantic Forest Domain, in Northern Brazil. From August, 2004 to January, 2005, monthly samples of pollen were collected at the entrance of twelve colonies of M. scutellaris. In two places, four colonies of M. scutellaris were compared with four colonies of africanized Apis mellifera L. The main pollen sources chosen by the colonies of M. scutellaris were flowers of the following plant families, in decreasing order of importance: Myrtaceae, Mimosaceae, Anacardiaceae, Sapindaceae, Caesalpiniaceae and Fabaceae. Productive pollen sources of Asteraceae, Arecaceae e Rubiaceae were heavily exploited by the colonies of A. mellifera and discharged by the colonies of M.scutellaris. Often, both species shared the main productive pollen sources, as the flowers of Myrtaceae and Mimosaceae. On the other hand, no pollen sources were heavily exploited altogether by both of them, as a rule. In different places and periods, the colonies of M. scutellaris presented high intra-specific similarity and they formed distinct clusters apart from A. mellifera. Therefore, the selection of pollen sources by colonies was species dependent. The paired comparisons refute the hypothesis of random flower exploitation by colonies and give support to the subsidiary hypothesis of selectivity or floral preferences by M.scutellaris.

A revision of flower visitation records by bees of the genus Centris in the Caatinga, the xerophylous vegetation predominant in the semi-arid Northeastern Brazil, is presented. This revision includes, besides literature data, results from six annual surveys of the bee fauna and visited flowers, undertaken in limited areas of the States of Paraíba, Bahia and Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. A total of 21 species of Centris were registered in these surveys, the highest species richness was observed in Castro Alves and Itatim (Bahia), 12 and 10 species, respectively. The higher species richness probably results from the presence of elements in adjacent biomas, since these two places are close to the eastern limit of the Caatinga. A total of 69 species of visited plants were registered. Caesalpinia pyramidalis (Caesalpiniaceae) and Melochia tomentosa (Sterculiaceae) are important nectar sources, as indicated by the higher number of Centris visitors' and by the number of areas where they occurred. Species of Chamaecrista, Senna (Caesalpiniaceae), and Solanum (Solanaceae) seem to be important pollen sources. Chamaecrista nictitans and C. pascuorum are registered for the first time as pollen sources for Centris hyptidis. The oil sources registered in the Caatinga for Centris bees belong to the families Malpighiaceae and Scrophulariaceae. Among the more abundant species of Centris, those not restricted to the Caatinga region (C. fuscata, C. aenea, C. tarsata and C. trigonoides) present a high similarity in the spectrum of visited plants. C. hyptidis, an endemic species, has a somewhat distinct niche.
