RESUMO

Cassava root rot disease is caused by a complex of soil-borne pathogens and has high economic impacts because it directly affects the tuberous roots, which are the main commercial product. This study aimed to evaluate cassava genotypes for resistance to root rot disease in a field with a previous history of high disease incidence. It also aimed to identify possible genomic regions associated with field resistance based on genome-wide association studies. A total of 148 genotypes from Embrapa Mandioca and Fruticultura were evaluated over two years, including improved materials and curated germplasms. Analysis of phenotypic data was conducted, as well as a genomic association analysis, based on the general linear model, mixed linear model, and fixed and random model circulating probability unification. The observed high disease index (ω) was directly correlated with genotype survival, affecting plant height, shoot yield, and fresh root yield. The genotypes were grouped into five clusters, which were classified according to level of root rot resistance (i.e., extremely susceptible, susceptible, moderately susceptible, moderately resistant, and resistant). The 10 genotypes with the best performance in the field were selected as potential progenitors for the development of segregating progenies. Estimates of genomic kinship between these genotypes ranged from -0.183 to 0.671. The genotypes BGM-1171 and BGM-1190 showed the lowest degree of kinship with the other selected sources of resistance. The genotypes BGM-0209, BGM-0398, and BGM-0659 showed negative kinship values with most elite varieties, while BGM-0659 presented negative kinship with all landraces. A genome-wide association analysis detected five significant single nucleotide polymorphisms related to defense mechanisms against biotic and abiotic stresses, with putative association with fresh root yield in soil infested with root rot pathogens. These findings can be utilized to develop molecular selection for root rot resistance in cassava.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Malignant cerebral edema (MCE) and intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) are associated with poor neurological outcomes despite revascularization after mechanical thrombectomy (MT). The factors associated with the development of MCE and ICH after MT are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine periprocedural factors associated with MCE, ICH, and poor functional outcome. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed anterior cerebral circulation large vessel occlusion cases that underwent MT from 2012 to 2019 at a single Comprehensive Stroke Center. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to determine significant predictors of MCE, ICH, and poor functional outcome (modified Rankin Scale, 3-6) at 90 d. RESULTS: Four hundred patients were included. Significant independent predictors of MCE after MT included initial stress glucose ratio (iSGR) (odds ratio [OR], 14.26; 95% CI, 3.82-53.26; P < .001), National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (OR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.03-1.18; P = .008), internal carotid artery compared with M1 or M2 occlusion, and absence of successful revascularization (OR, 0.16; 95% CI, 0.06-0.44; P < .001). Significant independent predictors of poor functional outcome included MCE (OR, 7.47; 95% CI, 2.20-25.37; P = .001), iSGR (OR, 5.15; 95% CI, 1.82-14.53; P = .002), ICH (OR, 4.77; 95% CI, 1.20-18.69; P = .024), NIHSS (OR, 1.10; 95% CI, 1.05-1.16; P < .001), age (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.03-1.07; P < .001), and thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 2C/3 recanalization (OR, 0.12; 95% CI, 0.05-0.29; P < .001). CONCLUSION: Elevated iSGR significantly increases the risk of MCE and ICH and is an independent predictor of poor functional outcome. Thrombolysis in cerebral infarction 2C/3 revascularization is associated with reduced risk of MCE, ICH, and poor functional outcome. Whether stress hyperglycemia represents a modifiable risk factor is uncertain, and further investigation is warranted.

RESUMO

Illicit drug use can cause a variety of effects including alterations in the immune system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of illicit drugs on circulating lipopolysaccharide (LPS), systemic inflammation and oxidative stress markers in drug users. We evaluated the levels of soluble CD14 (sCD14), LPS, inflammatory (TNF-α and IL-6) and regulatory (IL-10) cytokines, as well as C-reactive protein (CRP), lipid peroxidation (TBARS) and total thiols in the peripheral blood of 81 men included in groups of cannabis (n = 21), cocaine (n = 12), cannabis-plus-cocaine users (n = 27), and non-drug users (n = 21). The use of cannabis plus cocaine leads to higher systemic levels of LPS, CRP, IL-6 and higher IL-6/IL-10 ratio, characterizing a proinflammatory profile. In contrast, a regulatory profile as viewed by lower systemic TNF-α and IL-6 levels and lower TNF-α/IL-10 ratio were observed in cannabis users compared to the control group. Moreover, cocaine users presented a lower content of non-enzymatic antioxidant thiol compared to control group, cannabis group and cannabis plus cocaine group. In conclusion, our results indicate that the use of cannabis contributes to an anti-inflammatory/or regulatory profile while the concomitant cannabis plus cocaine consumption coexists with increased circulating amounts of LPS and proinflammatory status.

RESUMO

The occurrence of genotype by environment interaction (G x E), which is defined as the differential response of genotypes to environmental variation, is frequently reported in maize cultures, making it challenging to recommend cultivars. Methods allowing to study the potential nonlinear pattern of genotype responses to environmental variation allied to prior beliefs on unknown parameters are interesting to evaluate the phenotypic adaptability and stability of genotypes. In this context, the present study aimed to assess the adaptability and stability of maize hybrids, by using the Bayesian segmented regression model, and evaluate the efficacy of using informative and minimally informative prior distributions for the selection of cultivars. Randomized complete-block design experiments were carried out to study the yield (kg/ha) of 25 maize hybrids, in 22 different environments, in Northeastern Brazil. The Bayesian segmented regression model fitted using informative prior distributions presented lower credibility intervals and Deviance Criterium of Information values, compared to those obtained by fitting using minimally informative distributions. Therefore, the model using informative prior distributions was considered for the adaptability and stability evaluation of maize genotypes. Once most northeastern farmers in Brazil have limited capital, the genotype P4285HX should be considered for planting, due to its high yield performance and adaptability to unfavorable environments.

RESUMO

This study aimed at evaluating the agronomical performance of 'Pineapple' sweet orange grafted on ten rootstocks, in 2011-2017 harvests, so as to recommend the best combinations to be commercially explored in citrus growing regions in Bahia and Sergipe states, Brazil. An experiment wasinstalled to test ten rootstock for 'pineapple' sweet orange: 'Santa Cruz' Rangpur lime, 'Red Rough' Lemon, 'Orlando' Tangelo, 'Sunki Tropical' Mandarin, 'Swingle' citrumelo, the citrandarins 'Indio' and 'Riverside' and the hybrids HTR-051, LVKxLCR-010 and TSKxCTTR-002. The trial was installed in 2008 in the municipalityof Umbauba in Sergipe. The experimental design was complete randomized blocks with four replications and two plants per plot. Plant spacing was 6 x 4 m which corresponds to 416 plants per hectare and the orchard was rainfed and followed conventional management. The following agronomical parameters were evaluated: vegetative growth, drought tolerance, yield and physico-chemical quality of fruits as well as the abundance of phytophagous mites. Both hybrids LVK x LCR 010 and TSKC x CTTR-002 and the 'Santa Cruz' rangpur lime bestowed higher tolerance to the dry period on the 'Pineapple' orange tree, by comparison with higher water deficit susceptibility conferred by the 'Orlando' tangelo and the 'Swingle' citrumelo. Rootstocks HTR-051, 'Riverside' citrandarin, 'Swingle' citrumelo and TSKC x CTTR-02 induced plants to remain small and, thus, showed aptitude for culture densification. Cumulative yield of the 'Pineapple' orange was higher on rootstocks 'Red Rough' lemon and 'Santa Cruz' Rangpur lime, the hybrid LVK x LCR-010 and 'Sunki Tropical'. Yield efficiency was not influenced by the rootstocks. Physico-chemical quality of fruits of 'Pineapple' orange is affected by the rootstocks and meets the requirements of juice industries. Regarding plant resistance, the rootstocks did not influence the population density of mites P. oleivora, E. banksi and T. mexicanus on 'Pineapple' oranges. Results show that both rootstocks 'Red Rough' lemon and 'Santa Cruz' rangpur lime conferred high regularity to 'Pineapple' orange trees in citrus growing regions in Bahia and Sergipe states

This research aims to analyze management and innovation patterns among micro and small businesses (MSBs) that participated during 2015-2016 in the Local Innovation Agents (LIA) Program from the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (SEBRAE). Complemented by factor analyses, two-step cluster analysis was applied on 6674 MSBs' management dimensions to identify group patterns and statistical tests explored further cluster differences regarding management and innovation dimensions, besides innovation improvement throughout the program. Results were multifaceted. First, complementary factor analyses showed that management dimensions compose one factor with similar loadings, thus in accordance with their predictive importance found in the cluster analysis. Second, two main clusters were identified in terms of management level, which also presented significant differences regarding innovation levels. Third, considering a before-and-after self-comparison, by and large, innovation was significantly improved by both clusters. Fourth, the highest developed cluster presented higher improvement rates in most innovation dimensions, thus benefiting more from the program, except for two marketing-related innovations, which improved similarly by both clusters. Overall, even though the LIA Program was effective to leverage MSBs innovation, higher efficiency rates would be bounded to fewer participating MSBs, and hence policy planners should be aware of this tradeoff.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The Sofia 6-French PLUS catheter is a recently approved aspiration catheter for use in neuro-endovascular procedures. The description of Sofia 6-French PLUS use in acute ischemic stroke is limited. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this article is to describe our initial experience with the new Sofia 6-French PLUS catheter for treatment of acute ischemic stroke and to report on its safety and efficacy. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of 54 thrombectomy cases treated with the Sofia 6-French PLUS catheter. Mean patient age and admission National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score were 65.30 (1.92) and 15.98 (0.89), respectively. The most common sites of vessel occlusion included the M1 segment (50%) and internal carotid artery (31%). Thrombectomy was performed using the direct aspiration first pass technique and/or aspiration in conjunction with a stent retriever. RESULTS: Successful navigation of the Sofia 6-French PLUS catheter to the site of thromboembolus was achieved in 94% of cases. Revascularization was achieved in a total of 47 cases (87%). Mean time from groin access to revascularization was 42.79 (3.23) min. There were no catheter-related complications. Final outcome data was available for 44 patients (81%). Of these patients, 41% achieved a good outcome (modified Rankin scale score of 0-2) at 60-90 day follow-up, 41% had a poor outcome (modified Rankin 3-5) and eight patients died (18%). CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrate the safe and effective use of the Sofia 6-French PLUS catheter for treatment of acute ischemic stroke. Future studies in the form of a randomized clinical trial or multicenter registry are warranted to further evaluate its comparative safety and efficacy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The first pass effect has been recently reported as a predictor of good clinical outcome after stroke thrombectomy. We evaluate the first pass effect on outcome and the influence of revascularization in these and other patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained database on anterior cerebral circulation stroke thrombectomy cases from April 2012 to April 2018. Data compiled included patient demographics, presenting National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, vessel occlusion site, thrombectomy procedural details, and 90 day modified Rankin Scale scores. RESULTS: 205 patients were included. The numbers of patients who underwent one, two, three, four, five, and six passes were 69, 70, 55, 9, 1, and 1, respectively. Successful revascularization was achieved in 87%, 83%, and 64% of patients in the one, two, and 3 or more passes groups, respectively (p=0.002). Good functional outcome was inversely correlated with number of passes when comparing the one, two, and three or more passes groups (54%, 43%, 29%; P=0.014). In patients with full revascularization, there was no significant difference in good functional outcomes between the one, two, and three or more passes groups (64%, 65%, 50%; P=0.432). Number of passes was not an independent negative predictor of good clinical outcome (OR 1.66, 95% CI 0.82 to 3.39; P=0.165). CONCLUSIONS: First pass thrombectomy patients have better functional outcomes compared with beyond-first pass patients. This effect is related at least in part to a higher rate of revascularization in one pass patients. Revascularization beyond the first pass should continue to be the goal of stroke thrombectomy.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Ten cassava cultivars were grown in the field and evaluated to identify the most adapted to the Coastal Tablelands of northeast Brazil. The cultivars showed differences in proline and chlorophyll contents, plant height, number of leaves and branches, canopy area and root production, however they did not differ on photosynthetic rates. Cultivars 'Tianguá' and '9783-13' presented lower root yield, whereas 'BRS Tapioqueira' and 'Irará' had the highest root yield. Few leaves coupled with the highest water use efficiency for CO2 assimilation was found in 'BRS Kiriris' in contrast to 'BRS Jarina' and '9783-13'. 'BRS Caipira' had high proline content in both Umbaúba and Frei Paulo areas, traits usually associated to drought tolerance, that contribute to the adaptation. It is also important to consider that cultivar 'BRS Caipira' was the first to present increase in chlorophyll content after extended period of drought, that indicates a faster recovery after dry season. Furthermore, the results indicated that the most adapted cultivars for cultivation in this area are 'Irará', 'BRS Tapioqueira', 'BRS Kiriris' and 'BRS Caipira'.

Citrus are attacked by pest mites such as the citrus rust mite Phyllocoptruta oleivora (Ashmead) (Acari: Eriophyidae) and the spider mite Tetranychus mexicanus (McGregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae). However, little is known on citrus rootstocks influencing pest mites. We aimed to evaluate the influence of rootstocks on population densities of pest mites on the sweet oranges 'Pera CNPMF D-6' and 'Valencia Tuxpan' throughout time. Adults of both mite species were monthly counted during 19 months from June 2011 to February 2013. Rootstocks influenced the populations of pest mites, since lower densities of P. oleivora were found on 'Pera CNPMF D-6' sweet orange grafted on the hybrid TSKC × CTTR - 002 and on 'Swingle' citrumelo in comparison with the hybrid LVK × LCR - 010, 'Red' rough lime and 'Santa Cruz' rangpur lime as rootstocks. Similarly, lower densities of T. mexicanus were found on 'Valencia Tuxpan' sweet orange grafted on the hybrid HTR-051 in comparison to 'Indio' citrandarin, 'Sunki Tropical' mandarin and LVK × LCR - 010 as rootstocks. We concluded that densities of the mites P. oleivora and T. mexicanus on the sweet oranges 'Pera CNPMF D-6' and 'Valencia Tuxpan' were affected in some periods of the year by some rootstocks, suggesting influence of some genotypes on these pests.

The width of the depletion region in fused-silica samples thermally poled during various periods of time is investigated experimentally with four previously reported characterization techniques in an attempt to unify their findings. Although all measurements give a similar width of the depletion region, it is shown that the determination of the profile of chi(2) is also required for a good estimate of the nonlinearity induced by poling.

RESUMO

The study of inbreeding depression is important for breeding strategies such as use of inbred progenies or extraction of inbreed lines. A diallel of 28 maize open-pollinated varieties was evaluated in 10 environments in the early 1990s. At the same time, S1 populations for each of the 28 varieties were evaluated in the same 10 experiments (environments). Yield reductions of the populations from S0 to S1 (mean of the 10 environments), varied from 34.6 percent (CMS-01) to 59.2 percent (CMS-30), with an average of 49.1 percent. Inbreeding depression was greater in populations with a wider genetic base, which had never been exposed to inbreeding (CMS-30, BR-107, PH4, Cunha, Saracura, Nitrodent, and Nitroflint). Inbred lines with greater yield means should be obtained from the BR-105, BR-111, CMS-01, CMS-03, BR-106, CMS-14c, and CMS-28 populations. The use of parameter estimates generated by analysis of inbreeding depression, allow to make inferences about frequencies of deleterious alleles in the population. The frequencies of favorable alleles in the parents can be obtained by diallel analysis. The association of these two types of information, can provide a better interpretation of the genetic parameters and also can improve the process of selection of parents for either an intra- or an inter-populational breeding program
