RESUMO

This study aimed to develop and validate an index of surgical difficulty for the removal of impacted lower third molars. The study was performed in two steps. The first was a cross-sectional analysis of clinical, demographic, and radiographic variables collected from patients undergoing the removal of an impacted lower third molar between 2008 and 2012. The second step was a prospective cohort study involving the same surgical procedures to validate the index; this was performed between 2013 and 2016. Univariate regression analysis was applied, followed by multiple linear regression analysis. A total of 753 surgical procedures were analyzed in the first stage, which led to the identification of the most important variables and their levels of significance. The index was then applied to 280 surgical procedures. The preoperative difficulty was in concordance with the index results in all cases. Among cases with a low level of difficulty, 93.1% had been indexed as low difficulty; likewise, among cases with a high level of difficulty, there was 87.9% concordance with the index. With the use of reference statistics in the development and quality assurance processes, this validated index has proven to be a reliable and easily applicable instrument, with high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy.

RESUMO

Dichelacera (Dichelacera) walteri Guimarães, Gorayeb & Rodrigues-Guimarães n. sp. is described from female specimens collected in Marambaia Island, located in Mangaratiba County, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The characterization of the species was based in the following characters: a medium-sized species, more sclerotized than others in the subgenus Dichelacera Macquart, the second segment of palp with dark setae and longer than the third antennal segment, a brown scutum with pruinescence on the anterior half and posterior edges with white tonality, yellow dorsum of abdomen with the last three segments brown, white-yellowish venter with yellow setae, narrow frons with dark brown callus, extending just beyond a ridge in the middle of the frons, vertex with ocelli, hyaline wings with three large black bands, and tricolored legs.

During 24 months 96 marsupials and 64 rodents were captured, inspected and set free in the same space of the Pedra Branca State Park, Rio de Janeiro. From them, 105 ticks from 10 species in two families were manually collected. The dominant tick species on the rodents was Amblyomma longirostre and on the marsupials was Ixodes loricatus. There was a significant correlation of the temperature in relation to intensity of parasitism for ticks, demonstrating that the higher the temperature, greater is the number of ticks...

RESUMO

The purpose of the present study was to estimate the frequency of the occurrence of intraoperative adverse events during the removal of impacted maxillary third molars and to correlate predictive variables. A prospective cohort study was carried out involving patients submitted to at least one surgical removal of an impacted maxillary third molar as part of a line of research on third molar surgery developed at the study university. Predictor variables indicative of the occurrence of adverse events during surgery were classified by their demographic, clinical, radiographic, and surgical features. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed. In total, 106 patients fulfilled the eligibility criteria, and 204 surgeries were performed. The mean patient age was 22.8 ± 2.2 years and the ratio of women to men was 3:1. Nine different adverse events occurring during surgery were recorded. These events occurred in approximately 6.9% of cases and were significantly associated with the second molar relationship (P=0.008) and periodontal space (P=0.05). The study revealed a low frequency of adverse events during the surgical removal of an impacted maxillary third molar. The results suggest that adverse events during surgery are associated with the second molar relationship and periodontal space.

Eleven species of fleas were collected from 601 small rodents, from November 1995 to October 1997, in areas of natural focus of bubonic plague, including the municipalities of Nova Friburgo, Sumidouro and Teresópolis, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Among 924 fleas collected, Polygenis (Polygenis) rimatus (Rhopalopsyllidae) was the predominant species regarding the frequency, representing 41.3% (N:382), followed by P. (Neopolygenis) pradoi, representing 20% (N:185) and Craneopsylla minerva minerva (Stephanocircidae), representing 18.9% (N:175). The host Akodon cursor harbored 47.9% of these fleas. Other six host species were infested by 52.1% of the remaining fleas. Fleas were found on hosts and in places within the focus not previously reported by the literature.

RESUMO

Visceral leishmoniosis has recently become established in the peri-urban areas of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Mauro Marzochi, Keyla Marzochi and Raimundo Carvalho here discuss its incidence, and consider the factors involved in its establishment and propagation, as well as environmental, human, social, economic and historical factors.

RESUMO

A serological survery for canine visceral (VL) and American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) has been carried out during 1984-1989, to assess the effects of the prophylactic measures adopted in areas where there was a risk of transmission of the diseases in Rio de Janeiro. A previous serologival survey (1982/83) had detected serum positive dogas as well as the human disease in these same areas. A total fo 22,828 dogs have been examined in this last survey, 7,807 of which came from Campo Grande (VL and ACL area), 4,110 from Jacarepaguá (ACL area), 4,l46 from Realengo, 3,879 from Bangu and 2,886 from Senador Camará, (three VL areas). The analysis of these results showed a notable reduction in the number of serum positve dogs, compared to those of the first survey was 12.7%, against 0.62% of the second; (b) in Jacarepaguá (ACL) it decreased from 8.6%) to l.8% (c) in Bangu, Realengo and Senador Camará (VL) the rate decreased from 4.3% to 0.38%. The results indicate that this decrease was due to the prophylactic measures adopted in those areas
