RESUMO

We examined the quality of life (QoL) of 149 patients who were recruited in 2005 at outpatient treatment centers for cocaine dependence in Spain. Important life areas and life areas with potential need and interest to change in order to improve the QoL were analyzed in terms of patients? cocaine use intensity within the previous six months and lifetime severity addiction to cocaine. The Spanish versions of the Drug User Quality of Life Scale and the Lifetime Severity Index for Cocaine were used to measure QoL, needs and interest, and severity addiction to cocaine. The data analysis employed t-tests, linear regression, Mann?Whitney U tests, multivariate regression, and chi-square tests. Tailoring treatment programs to address the life areas that are considered relevant to cocaine users considering their intensity of consumption and lifetime severity addiction to cocaine may improve retention and treatment outcomes. Further research needs to consider patients of different ethnic backgrounds and cultural contexts. The study's limitations are noted.

RESUMO

The Injection Drug User Quality of life Scale (IDUQOL) measures the unique and individual circumstances that determine the quality of life of injection drug users. This paper reports the psychometric properties of the Spanish version, for drug dependent persons with or without injectable consumption using a revised instrument: Drug user Quality of Life Scale-Spanish (DUQOL-Spanish). We studied 169 outpatients in 9 Spanish drug treatment centers. Factor analysis, internal consistency, test-retest reliability and criterion-related validity were assessed. The results show the essential unidimensionality of the scale, which supports the use of a total score. Both internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: 0.86), and test-retest reliability (r=0.79) of the total score were high. Criterion-related validity supports the interpretation of the DUQOL-Spanish total score as measuring a construct consistent with quality of life. This study suggests that the DUQOL-Spanish is a valid instrument to measure subjective quality of life in Spanish drug users, and allows the identification of life areas that are considered by the patient important to change in order to improve their quality of life.

Objectives. To describe the concept of quality of life and his relevance for the evaluation of treatments in addicted population, as well as the most utilized measuring instruments. Also, to describe some methodological considerations when to elaborate or to select measuring instruments of quality of life and proposals on the procedure of evaluation. Material and methods. It was carried out a non systematic revision of clinical studies and paper review of articles about quality of life in addicted population, included in the databases Medline, Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index, Psychinfo and IME. Results. The quality of life is frequently used as an indicator of treatment outcome and in the evaluation of treatments. Meeting the patient-rated needs is closely related with the improvement of quality of life. In drug-addicted patient´s it is necessary that as much in the investigations as in the clinical attendance it is considered the satisfaction and the patient-rated needs in several areas of the life. Most of instruments of quality of life used in studies with addicted population have been centered in the quality of life related with the health. In the elaboration of measuring instruments it is recommended to apply the approaches of the ePRO project. It is convenient a continuous evaluation of the quality of life and of the necessities perceived by the patient during and after treatment for the high probability of relapse in addicted patients. Conclusions. In drug-addicted population it is necessary to use measuring instruments of quality of life that measure the satisfaction in several areas of life besides those related with the health, as well as the attention of patient-rated needs due to their impact in the improvement of subjective quality of life. A continuous evaluation of these factors would allow a more effective attention, a better communication between the patient and staff, and a bigger understanding of the addicted patient

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Citation analysis elucidates patterns of information consumption within professional communities. The aim of this study was to analyze the citations of 87 Spanish medical journals by calculating their impact factors and immediacy indices for 2001, and to estimate the importance of Archivos de Bronconeumología within the framework of Spanish medicine. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Eighty-seven Spanish medical journals were included. All were listed in the Spanish Medical Index (Indice Medico Español) and in at least one of the following databases: MEDLINE, BIOSIS, EMBASE, or Science Citation Index. References to articles from 1999 through 2001 in citable articles from 2001 were analyzed. Using the method of the Institute for Scientific Information, we calculated the national impact factor and immediacy index for each journal. RESULTS: The journals with the highest national impact factors were Revista Española de Quimioterapia (0.894), Medicina Clínica (0.89), and Archivos de Bronconeumología (0.732). The self-citation percentage of Archivos de Bronconeumología was 18.3% and the immediacy index was 0.033. CONCLUSIONS: The impact factor obtained by Archivos de Bronconeumología confirms its importance in Spanish medicine and validates its inclusion as a source journal in Science Citation Index and Journal Citation Report.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to present the bibliometric indicators of Actas Españolas de Psiquiatría that were obtained from the study "Potential impact factor of the Spanish medical journals in 2001", financed by the Spanish Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte. The citations made in Actas Españolas de Psiquiatría and its national and international impact factor and immediacy index have been obtained by the use of a methodology similar to the one used by the Institute for Scientific Information. The national indicators only take into account the citations made in 87 Spanish journals considered as sources, while those from the foreign source journals of Science Citation Index have been added to the previously cited ones. Actas Españolas de Psiquiatría has obtained a national impact factor of 0.315 and an international impact factor of 0.395, which places it as a leader in the Spanish psychiatric journals.
