RESUMO

The steady-state electrical conduction current for single and multilayer polyimide (PI) nanocomposite films was observed at the low and high electric field for different temperatures. Experimental data were fitted to conduction models to investigate the dominant conduction mechanism in these films. In most films, space charge limited current (SCLC) and Poole-Frenkel current displayed dominant conduction. At a high electric field, the ohmic conduction was replaced by current-voltage dependency. Higher conduction current was observed for nanocomposite films at a lower temperature, but it declined at a higher temperature. PI nanocomposite multilayer films showed a huge reduction in the conduction current at higher electric fields and temperatures. The conclusions derived in this study would provide the empirical basis and early breakdown phenomenon explanation when performing dielectric strength and partial discharge measurements of PI-based nanocomposite insulation systems of electric motors.

RESUMO

The unusual properties of nanocomposites are commonly explained by the structure of their interphase. Therefore, these nanoscale interphase regions need to be precisely characterized; however, the existing high resolution experimental methods have not been reliably adapted to this purpose. Electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) represents a promising technique to fulfill this objective, although no complete and accurate interphase study has been published to date and EFM signal interpretation is not straightforward. The aim of this work was to establish accurate EFM signal analysis methods to investigate interphases in nanodielectrics using three experimental protocols. Samples with well-known, controllable properties were designed and synthesized to electrostatically model nanodielectrics with the aim of "calibrating" the EFM technique for future interphase studies. EFM was demonstrated to be able to discriminate between alumina and silicon dioxide interphase layers of 50 and 100 nm thickness deposited over polystyrene spheres and different types of matrix materials. Consistent permittivity values were also deduced by comparison of experimental data and numerical simulations, as well as the interface state of silicone dioxide layers.

RESUMO

This study focuses on the dielectrical characterization of polycarbonate films coated with silica nanoparticle bilayers assembled through the Layer-by-Layer (LbL) technique. This is the first attempt of dielectric characterization performed on LbL-treated plastic substrates. To this aim, LbL coatings consisting of oppositely charged colloidal silica have been built on a polymeric substrate (polycarbonate). Then, dielectric features such as space charge accumulation, electrical voltage breakdown, and resistance to corona discharge (through laser ablation) have demonstrated that the colloidal silica nanoparticle assemblies can influence the nature of the trapped space charges and affect the resistance of polycarbonate to corona discharge, changing the distribution of the laser energy on impact.
