RESUMO

The development of the Grijalva-Usumacinta river basin exerts modifications on its discharge area. A sediment core was studied to reconstruct environmental changes and trace element contamination status during the past 45 years. 210Pb-derived mass accumulation rates indicate higher sediment input to the area since 1995, related to increased precipitation and floodings in the catchment area. Sediments show finer particles from the late 1970s on, likely related to dams construction upriver and/or land use changes. Heavy metal enrichment factors (EF < 2) suggest minimum contamination. Benthic foraminifera and redox-sensitive - elements (As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, V and Zn) indicate the sediments before 2000 were deposited under oxygenated conditions. Afterwards, environmental conditions changed and benthic foraminifera and dinocysts assemblages changed suggesting eutrophication and lower oxygen conditions during the last 20 years. Monitoring should be continued to assess eutrophication/hypoxic/pollution trends that could become deleterious to the marine biota.

RESUMO

The Campeche Sound is the major offshore oil producing area in the Southern Gulf of Mexico (SGoM). To evaluate the impact of oil related activities in the ocean floor sediments, we analyzed the geochemical (major and trace element, organic carbon and hydrocarbon concentrations) and biological (benthic foraminifera) composition of 62 superficial sediment samples, from 13 to 1336 m water depth. Cluster and Factor analysis of all the variables indicate that their distribution patterns are mainly controlled by differences between the terrigenous and carbonate platforms in the SGoM. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages were abundant and diverse, and their distribution patterns are mainly determined by water depth and sedimentary environment. However, most of the abundant species are opportunistic and/or low-oxygen tolerant, and many of their tests show oil stains and infillings, characteristic of oil polluted locations, suggesting the environment has been modified by natural seepage or oil-related activities. To determine if these conditions are natural or anthropogenic in origin, pre - industrial settings should be studied. Organic carbon (Corg) content (0.6-2.9%) and total hydrocarbon concentrations (PAHs 1.0-29.5 µg kg-1) were usually higher around the oil platforms area, the natural hydrocarbon seeps ("chapopoteras") area and offshore rivers, but there is no accumulation of oil related trace elements in these areas. However, the comparison with international sediment quality benchmarks indicates that Cd, Cr and Ni concentrations are above the threshold effect level, and also As, Ba and Cu are above the probable effect level benchmarks, which indicate that these element concentrations might be of potential ecological concern. Comprehensive studies involving different proxies, and assessing pre-industrial conditions, must be undertaken before assessing environmental health of marine benthic ecosystems.

RESUMO

We document the distribution of Didymosphenia geminata in central-southern Chilean rivers and identify the chemical and physical factors associated with its presence/absence (p/a). Repeated surveys in five successive years provided evidence that D. geminata could be nearing a biogeographic equilibrium in the region. D. geminata databases from extensive biological and environmental surveys in 187 rivers, within ten catchments, south of 38°S commenced in November 2010 and ran through May 2013. In addition, data from two other field surveys were used. The sites evenly distributed latitudinally were climatically characterized. The recent sampling program, following a published species distribution model, was designed to explore D. geminata distribution within thirteen catchments (34°S-48°S). An extensive river survey in 2014 (spring-summer) and in 2015 (autumn) included the p/a, and relative abundance of D. geminata cells in phytobenthos and in the drift. These p/a results showed that the probability of re-encountering D. geminata cells at sites where the species was previously found was significantly high while the probability of finding D. geminata cells at sites previously without the species was significantly low. This suggests that the distribution of D. geminata cells among suitable habitats was nearing completion. The relative abundance of D. geminata cells in the phytobenthos versus in the drift indicates seasonality with higher proportion of cells in the phytobenthos during the spring-summer than during the autumn. During the final surveys, principal component analysis of chemical and physical characteristics of rivers showed significant differences between rivers with and without D. geminata. Based on our observations of the distribution of D. geminata cells among rivers with suitable habitat conditions and the fluctuating rate of spread between rivers, we conclude that D. geminata is probably in the ending stage of its spatial demographic expansion in Chile surmounting the different barriers of the invasive process.

RESUMO

Concentrations of heavy metals were measured in sediment and water from Málaga Bay (South Spain). In the later twentieth century, cities such as Málaga, have suffered the impact of mass summer tourism. The ancient industrial activities, and the actual urbanization and coastal development, recreation and tourism, wastewaters treatment facilities, have been sources of marine pollution. In sediments, Ni was the most disturbing metal because Ni concentrations exceeded the effects range low (ERL), concentration at which toxicity could start to be observed in 85% of the samples analyzed. The metal bioavailability decreased in the order: Cd>Ni>Pb>Cu>Cr. In the sea water samples, Cd and Pb were the most disturbing metals because they exceeded the continuous criteria concentration (CCC) of US EPA in a 22.5% and 10.0% of the samples, respectively. Statistical analyses (ANOVA, PCA, CA) were performed.

RESUMO

The protection of sunflower meal (SFM) proteins by treatments with solutions of malic acid (1 M) or orthophosphoric acid (0.67 M) and heat was studied in a 3 × 3 Latin-square design using three diets and three rumen and duodenum cannulated wethers. Acid solutions were applied to SFM at a rate of 400 ml/kg under continuous mixing. Subsequently, treated meals were dried in an oven at 150°C for 6 h. Diets (ingested at 75 g/kg BW0.75) were isoproteic and included 40% Italian ryegrass hay and 60% concentrate. The ratio of untreated to treated SFM in the concentrate was 100 : 0 in the control diet and around 40 : 60 in diets including acid-treated meals. The use of acid-treated meals did not alter either ruminal fermentation or composition of rumen contents and led to moderate reductions of the rumen outflow rates of untreated SFM particles, whereas it did not affect their comminution and mixing rate. In situ effective estimates of by-pass (BP) and its intestinal effective digestibility (IED) of dry matter (DM), CP and amino acids (AAs) were obtained considering both rates and correcting the particle microbial contamination in the rumen using 15N infusion techniques. Estimates of BP and IED decreased applying microbial correction, but these variations were low in agreement with the small contamination level. Protective treatments increased on average the BP of DM (48.5%) and CP (267%), mainly decreasing both the soluble fraction and the degradation rate but also increasing the undegradable fraction, which was higher using orthophosphoric acid. Protective treatments increased the IED of DM (108%) and CP, but this increase was lower using orthophosphoric acid (11.8%) than malic acid (20.7%). Concentrations of AA were similar among all meals, except for a reduction in lysine concentrations using malic acid (16.3%) or orthophosphoric acid (20.5%). Protective treatments also increased on average the BP of all AA, as well as the IED of most of them. Evidence of higher increases for those AA showing a high resistance to degradation in the untreated meal were also observed. The total supply of metabolisable AA was increased by 3.87 times for sulphur-containing AA, whereas that of lysine was increased by 2.5 times, mainly because of lysine losses with heat treatments. These treatments and especially that with malic acid would be useful to increase the protein value of these meals but their combined use with lysine-rich protein concentrates would improve the metabolisable protein profile.

Purpose: To examine the predictive value of an early transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) study performed in the emergency department in patients with spontaneous subarachoniod hemorrhage (SAH) in good neurological condition, in order to know which patients are at high risk of developing delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI). Design: A descriptive observational study was carried out involving a period of 3 years. Setting: Critical Care and Emergency Department. Patients: The study consecutively included patients with SAH of grade I-III on the Hunt and Hess scale. Variables of Interest: DCI (decrease of 2 points in GCS or focal deficit), Mean Velocity (MV) of middle cerebral arteries (MCA), Lindegaard Index (IL). Sonographic vasospasm pattern (SVP) was considered if MCA-MV>120cm/sc and IL>3. Results: The mean age of the 122 patients was 54.1±13.7 years; 57.3% were women. SVP was detected in 24 patients (19.7%), although high velocities patterns (HVP) were present in 38 patients (31.1%). DCI developed in 21 patients (MV183+/-49cm/sc), all with previous SVP. In this group MV increased 22+/-5cm/sc/day during the first 3 days. The group without HVP (84 patients/MV of 67+/-16.6cm/sc), compared with DCI group, showed differences in highest MV (p<0.001), and also ΔMV/day (8.30+/-4,5cm/sc Vs 22+/-5cm/sc) during the first 3 days (p=0.009). In our series, ROC analysis selected the best cut-off value for ΔMV/day as 21cm/sc (p<0.001). Conclusion: During the first 3 days, an increase of 21cm/s/24h in MCA-MV was associated with the development of symptomatic vasospasm. TCD is a useful tool for the early detection of patients at risk of DCI after SAH (AU=

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical characteristics, treatment, and follow-up of a cohort of 29 patients with Wilson's disease (WD) within the region of Murcia. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We reviewed the medical records of 29 cases of WD (mean age, 20.3 +/- 13.4 years) diagnosed during the last 16 years. RESULTS: The most frequent reason for consultation was upon discovering a high transaminase level in almost half the patients, followed by tremors or dystonia in 17% of patients, respectively. A Kayser-Fleischer ring was observed in 17/29 (58.6%) of patients (100% of patients with pure neurological involvement and 35% of patients with pure clinical hepatic disease; p < 0.001). Blood copper levels not associated with ceruloplasmin as well as cupruria were notably superior in patients with neurological symptoms and in those with liver cirrhosis at the time of diagnosis. Patient clinical symptoms remained stable with D-penicillamine or trientine, or improved during the observation period, for 18 out of 29 patients (62%), while 11 out of 29 patients (38%) got worse. CONCLUSIONS: In our region patients with WD are diagnosed at a younger age, and in most cases for hepatic disease. Patients with neurological disease or liver cirrhosis had a high level of free copper not associated to ceruloplasmin and cupruria. The disease had a favorable evolution in all patients but those diagnosed with hepatic disease or advanced neurological disease.

RESUMO

Trace element determination can be applied in forensic medicine to diagnose the cause of death. Drowning is the second leading cause of death from unintentional injury. Despite the many diagnostic methods used, the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning continues to be one of the most difficult in forensic pathology. Strontium is a highly sensitive marker of water aspiration in a liquid medium rich in this metal. The aims of this study were to confirm the diagnostic value of strontium in cases of drowning compared with other causes of death, to analyse factors that could affect its concentration and to ascertain the sensitivity and specificity of strontium in right and left ventricles and peripheral serum for the post-mortem diagnosis of drowning. We studied 120 cadavers selected from medico-legal autopsies with different causes of death. Strontium (Sr) levels were measured in the serum (left and right ventricles and peripheral vein) of all cadavers and, in the case of drowning, in the water medium itself, by using Zeeman AAS. Our results confirm the usefulness of blood Sr levels for diagnosing seawater and freshwater drowning, although great care should be exercised in the latter case.

RESUMO

The usefulness of solid phase microextraction (SPME) to detect the occurrence of the irradiation markers 2-dodecylcyclobutanone (2-DCB) and 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)benzene in irradiated ground beef was evaluated. To that aim, beef samples were irradiated with different irradiation doses and subsequently examined together with non-irradiated beef samples used as control samples. The SPME conditions applied were selected as a result of performing an optimization process including different fibers (PDMS, DVB/CAR/PDMS, polyacrylate and PDMS/DVB), as well as extraction times (10, 25 and 40min) and temperatures (40 and 60°C). For comparison, 2-DCB and 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)benzene were additionally identified in some of the samples by steam distillation-solvent extraction (SDE). Although this study is a preliminary work, from the results obtained SPME seemed to be a rapid and valuable technique to determine 2-DCB and 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)benzene in ground beef subjected to irradiation, offering advantages over other methods reported in the literature. In addition, SPME allowed to confirm the validity of 2-DCB as an useful marker to distinguish non-irradiated from irradiated ground beef. On the contrary, the occurrence of 1,3-bis(1,1-dimethylethyl)benzene was however established in both types of samples by SPME and SDE.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The spontaneous cystoplasty perforation is a serious and potentially fatal problem if a delay in diagnosis and treatment occurs. We pretend: 1) to look for prevention analyzing the risk factors, 2) to identify the main data of diagnostic suspicion and 3) to evaluate the result of the treatments done. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Out of 30 children with cystoplasty 5 of them have presented 8 perforations (16,6%). Several influential factors, the symptoms, the treatments and the evolution are reviewed. RESULTS: The average time between cystoplasty and the perforation was 8,2 years. A urethral resistance that allows continence, and an insufficient intermittent catheterization, have been the main risk factors. In the 8 episodes there were abdominal pain and distension. The ultrasonography showed intraperitoneal extravasation in 5 episodes, multiple peritoneal cysts in one, and suggestive image of appendicular plastron in another one. The cystography showed intraperitoneal extravasation only in 3 cases. The initial management was conservative in the 7 episodes diagnosed before surgery, and 3 had a good evolution (42,8%); the other 4 needed surgery with good evolution in all cases. Two of 5 patients (40%) presented 3 relapses in an average time of 5 years. The survival is 100%. CONCLUSIONS: 16,6% of patients with cystoplasty of this series had one or more episodes of spontaneous bladder perforation. The more significant risk factors are a high urethral resistance and an inadequate intermittent catheterization. The patients with cystoplasty, and their families, must know this complication, their risk factors and symptoms to prevent it, or to facilitate an early diagnosis.

The patients with cystoplasty, and their families, must know this complication, their risk factors and symptoms to prevent it, or to facilitate an early diagnosis (AU)

RESUMO

A method based on the on-line coupling of reversed phase liquid chromatography with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (RPLC-GC-MS) for the chiral evaluation of characteristic constituents of fruit beverage aroma was investigated. The consideration of a variety of parameters involved in the transfer step allowed to achieve relative standard deviations ranging from 0.4 to 10% in most cases and detection limits from 0.2 to 2.5 mg/l. By applying the developed method to fruit beverages, racemic mixtures of ethyl 2-methylbutanoate and gamma-nonalactone were found. This fact suggests the eventual addition of artificial aromas. The method proposed in the present work can be useful to assess reliably the authenticity of aqueous samples, such as fruit beverages.

RESUMO

The variability of the enantiomeric distribution of biologically active chiral terpenes in Mentha piperita plants from different geographical origins was evaluated by solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME-GC-MS). The optimisation of some parameters (i.e. exposure temperature, extraction time and type of fibre) affecting SPME-extraction enabled relative standard deviations ranging from 4 to 13% to be achieved. The use of two different chiral stationary phases allowed to separate the identified chiral terpenes into their corresponding enantiomers as well as to verify the enantiomeric excesses of those compounds which were enantiomerically resolved on both phases. For all chiral terpenes, the enantiomeric composition varied within a very narrow range all over the samples. Consequently, it may be stated that the enantiomeric composition of chiral terpenes in Mentha piperita appears to be independent of the geographical origin of the plant and, thus, any alteration in the characteristic value may be related to an adulteration or inadequate sample handling. These results support the usefulness of the enantiomeric composition of bioactive chiral terpenes in Mentha piperita in authenticity studies.

RESUMO

Exopolysaccharide (EPS) was produced by Klebsiella pneumoniae K63 grown in fed-batch cultures using different procedures of the supply of carbon or nitrogen (N) source, or both. Cultures grown with excess of glucose and limitation or exhaustion of N produced 54.8 and 47.4 g(EPS) l(-1), respectively. These cultures also led to an accumulation of 'overflow' metabolites representing more than 16% of carbon conversion. The consistency indexes ( K ) obtained to the end of the cultures, characteristic of the rheological property of the biopolymer, were 16.4 Pa s(n) for N deficiency and 5.2 Pa s(n) for N limitation conditions. The simultaneous limitation of glucose and N decreased the excretion of co-metabolites (6.4% of carbon conversion) and the EPS production (18.1 g(EPS) l(-1)), while improving the quality of the polysaccharide, characterized by the highest K of 126.2 Pa s(n) and the highest pseudoplasticity degree (flow behaviour index, n=0.2).
