RESUMO

Bones are continuously remodeled (resorbed and regenerated) to allow fracture healing and skeleton adaptation to stress. When excessive resorption occurs, bone microstructure is deteriorated, leading to osteoporosis. At early stages, osteoporosis usually has no symptoms; most people are diagnosed when a fracture occurs due to disease severity. To prevent fractures, technologies have been developed to identify high risk population eligible to treatment. Fracture risk has been assessed by analyzing the interaction of different energy stimulus with bone tissues as well as by statistical models that evaluate multiple clinical risk factors. The most applied methods are Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry and Fracture Risk Assessment tool. As they present some limitations, other technologies have been proposed for such purpose. A survey of the currently applied and emerging methods is here presented in order to provide a scenario of the technological challenges and trends to diagnose osteoporosis.

RESUMO

Aerodynamic instabilities in centrifugal compressors are dangerous phenomena affecting machine efficiency and in severe cases leading to failure of the compressing system. Quick and robust instability detection during compressor operation is a challenge of utmost importance from an economical and safety point of view. Rapid indication of instabilities can be obtained using a pressure signal from the compressor. Detection of aerodynamic instabilities using pressure signal results in specific challenges, as the signal is often highly contaminated with noise, which can influence the performance of detection methods. The aim of this study is to investigate and compare the performance of two non-linear signal processing methods-Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA)-for aerodynamic instability detection. Two instabilities of different character, local-inlet recirculation and global-surge, are considered. The comparison focuses on the robustness, sensitivity and pace of detection-crucial parameters for a successful detection method. It is shown that both EMD and SSA perform similarly for the analysed machine, despite different underlying principles of the methods. Both EMD and SSA have great potential for instabilities detection, but tuning of their parameters is important for robust detection.

RESUMO

Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) was used to study the effect of moisture on transport properties of three low molecular weight alcohols (methanol, ethanol, and 1-butanol) through high barrier copolymers of ethylene-vinyl alcohol with an ethylene content of 38%mol (EVOH38) at 40 degrees C. The value of the partition coefficient (K) was obtained by using two approaches: (a) the fit of the slope of sorption isotherms obtained through the method of Kiselev and Yashin; and (b) the solution to the model of Romdhane and Danner obtained by using the law of moments. The second method also allowed the estimation of the diffusion coefficient (D(p)) at the different humidity conditions. None of these two methods were applicable at low values of relative humidity. With the first method, the diffusion of the permeants through the copolymer was not fast enough to allow them to reach the core of the EVOH particles used as stationary phase resulting in sorption values unrealistically low. The fit of the chromatograms obtained by using the second method also suggested questionable values of the mass transport parameters. Although the theoretical curve perfectly described the chromatogram, the low extent of the interaction and the slow diffusion resulted in interdependent values of the coefficients K and D(p), with infinite pairs of values providing the same curve profile. As the relative humidity of the carrier gas increased, the diffusivity and the sorption of the alcohols also increased, making both methods applicable. In the case of the partition coefficient, the sorption of the biggest molecules (ethanol and 1-butanol) was the most affected, the increment of K for methanol being moderate. As regards the D(p) value, methanol was the most influenced compound and 1-butanol the least. Finally, a sharp increment of the D(p) of the three alcohols was observed between 35 and 47% RH and attributed to the plasticization of the copolymer.

RESUMO

The ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers (EVOHs) are well-known high oxygen barrier materials that are being used successfully in the design of packaging structures for oxygen-sensitive food or pharmaceutical products. Recently, there has been increasing interest in using EVOH materials to provide a high barrier to organic compounds as a means to reduce food aroma scalping. However, the barrier function of this family of materials diminishes significantly in humid environments, and it is supposed that so does the organic vapor barrier. In this work, a new sorption-based method to characterize the interaction between food aroma and polymer films for packaging as a function of relative humidity is presented and is used to determine the barrier to ethyl butyrate and alpha-pinene of EVOH at 23 degrees C. The results show that although EVOH is an excellent barrier to food aroma when dry, a property that even improves at low relative humidity (RH), the solubility and diffusivity of the compounds tested increase dramatically with humidity at medium to high water activities. However, even in the worst case (100% RH), EVOH outperforms low-density polyethylene (LDPE) as a barrier to organic vapors at least 500,000-fold.
