RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the Geriatric Feelings of Burdensomeness Scale (T-GFBS) in Turkish community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This study included 300 community-dwelling older adults. Data were collected face-to-face between October 2023 and January 2024. The psychometric properties of the T-GFBS were evaluated using internal consistency, factor analysis, and test-retest reliability. RESULTS: The confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good model fit (χ2/df = 2.360, RMSEA = 0.06, CFI = 0.93, GFI = 0.87, IFI = 0.93, TLI = 0.92). The scale revealed good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.953) and acceptable test-retest reliability (ICC = 0.998). The single-factor structure of the T-GFBS with 25 items was consistent with the original version. CONCLUSIONS: The T-GFBS is an easy-to-understand, comprehensive, reliable, and valid tool for assessing the feelings of burdensomeness in Turkish older adults.

RESUMO

This study was conducted to determine and compare the spiritual care needs of cancer patients and their caregivers. A comparative descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed in this study. The study comprised 102 patients who were registered in the hospital's home care unit, as well as their caregivers (total number = 204). The data were collected using a personal information form and the Spiritual Care Needs Inventory. The cancer patients had a mean age of 69.5 years, while their caregivers' mean age was 53.1 years. According to the results, the cancer patients needed more spiritual care than their caregivers (p < 0.01). Patients' spiritual care needs differed significantly by employment status (p < 0.05). However, gender, educational level, and marital status did not have a significant difference in the spiritual care needs of the patients and their caregivers (p > 0.05). Moderately positive and significant (p < 0.05) correlations between patients and their caregivers were found for the total Spiritual Care Needs Inventory scores (r = 0.449), the meaning and hope subscale (r = 0.378), and the caring and respect subscale (r = 0.546). It is important to evaluate the spiritual needs of patients with cancer and their caregivers. In this evaluation, it is essential to elicit the perspectives of cancer patients and their caregivers concerning spiritual needs and religion. Effective spiritual care for patients and their caregivers can only be provided if their beliefs and priorities are taken into consideration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Accompanying a person at their death is a common experience in nurse education. In addition to all death experiences that are a meaningful part of the nursing profession, the first death experience is very important. However, there is limited understanding of nursing students' first death experiences. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore nursing students' experiences of the death of a person for the first time during clinical practice. DESIGN: This study was conducted as a qualitative study using a phenomenological design. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 17 nursing students participated in this study. METHODS: Data were collected through online individual in-depth interviews and were analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS: Four main themes and eleven sub-themes emerged. The themes were meaning of death (first death, a part of life), process management (death information, physical environment, bad news), after death (empty bed, questioning, death with dignity) and education (curriculum, support, professional perception). CONCLUSIONS: While the first experience of death provides an opportunity for students to learn, this experience reveals various negative emotions and the need for support.

RESUMO

The present study aimed to uncover whether the renewable energy education carried out in a museum has an impact on awareness of renewable energy and the environment among children and their parents. The study was carried out with two groups of 65 children aged 6 years and their parents (n = 47). The findings revealed significant differences between the pretest and posttest in favor of the pretest and between pretest and follow-up test in favor of follow-up test, but there was no significant difference between posttest and follow-up test. We determined It was observed that the children had a considerable willingness to participate in the sessions and used the names of renewable energy sources in their follow-up drawings or their remarks on the drawings. Moreover, given the parents' statements, we discovered that the children acquired considerable awareness of the environment and efficient energy consumption and became acting more consciously toward renewable energy sources.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Considering the life-threatening nature of gynecological cancers, spirituality and religious beliefs may play a key role in the experiences of the patients during the disease process and their coping. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the spiritual experiences of Muslim women with gynecological cancer during the disease process. METHODS: A qualitative, phenomenological, and hermeneutic approach was followed in the research. Fourteen women with gynecological cancer in Turkey were interviewed individually. The thematic analysis approach of Braun and Clarke was used to evaluate the data. RESULTS: The results of the data analysis revealed 3 themes (consisting of 9 subthemes): (1) reaction to cancer: spiritual distress (fear of death, perception of punishment, fear of obscurity and uncertainty, and being a cause of spiritual distress in the family); (2) reaction to cancer: spiritual well-being (accepting whatever may come from Allah, strengthening the faith in Allah); and (3) spiritual resources for coping with cancer (religious practices, hobbies and complementary practices, and family support). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study shed light on the cases that may cause spiritual distress and improve the spiritual well-being that is experienced by Muslim women with gynecological cancer during the disease process; they also reveal that religion has an effect on the experiences during the cancer process and the coping methods. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Healthcare professionals who care for Muslim women with gynecological cancer should plan spiritual care by being aware of the cultural characteristics and religious beliefs of these women and their families.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Ethics positions, consisting of the two fundamental dimensions of idealism and relativism, influence individuals' decision-making significantly. Particularly in an applied field such as nursing, the ethics positions of nurses can play a significant role in clinical decisions. Therefore, it is important to know the factors affecting the ethics positions of nurses in clinical decision-making. AIM: The aim of the study is to examine the factors affecting the ethics positions of nursing students in clinical decision-making. RESEARCH DESIGN: This is a two-phase sequential explanatory mixed methods study designed in accordance with the COREQ criteria. A participant Information Form and the Ethics Position Questionnaire were used to collect quantitative data. Qualitative data were obtained through focus group interviews. ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS: This study was conducted after receiving written permission from X University Ethics Board. Additionally, permission was obtained from the participating nursing faculty. PARTICIPANTS: Among the fourth-year nursing students, 180 students participated in the quantitative phase and 30 students in the qualitative phase of the study. RESULTS: The quantitative data analysis showed that the idealism sub-dimension mean scores of the participants were higher than the relativism sub-dimension mean scores. The analysis of the qualitative data resulted in four main themes that influence participants' ethics positions in clinical decision-making: (1) attitudes of role models in clinical practice (staff nurses/mentors/lecturers), (2) resources related to clinical practice (labs, hospitals/classrooms), (3) health system (hospital policies/school policies), and (4) personal differences (act with emotion/act with logic). CONCLUSION: The results showed that the health system, role models in the clinic, personal differences, and skill-related resources affect the ethics positions of nursing students in clinical decision-making. In this regard, awareness can be raised by providing training to nursing students by academic instructors on ethics positions and the factors that are determined to affect ethics positions in clinical decision-making.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The intensive care unit is a place where patients try to cope with pain and question the meaning and purpose of life and spiritual needs emerge. OBJECTIVE: The present study was conducted to examine the effects of spiritual care interventions on the spiritual well-being, loneliness, hope, and life satisfaction of patients treated in intensive care. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in an intensive care unit as an interventional study with a randomized pre-test, post-test, and control group between September and December 2021. A total of 64 patients, 32 in the intervention group and 32 in the control group, were included in the sample. The patients in the intervention group received eight sessions (twice a week) of spiritual nursing interventions according to the Traditions-Reconciliation-Understandings-Searching-Teachers model in the intensive care unit, while the control group received routine nursing care. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 63.53 ± 4.10 years in the intervention group and 63.37 ± 3.18 years in the control group. Most of the participants in both the intervention (59.4 %) and control (68.7 %) groups were female. Following the intervention, the findings showed that the intervention had positive effects on patients' spiritual well-being (t = -10.382), loneliness (t = 13.635), hope (t = -10.440), and life satisfaction (t = -10.480) levels (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: It was found that the spiritual care provided in the intensive care unit positively affected patients' spiritual well-being, hope, loneliness, and life satisfaction levels. It can be recommended that nurses working in intensive care develop a spiritually supportive environment by addressing the spiritual issues of patients and their relatives and using existing spiritual care services. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: Intensive care nurses should provide an environment and nursing care that meet their patients' spiritual needs. Spiritual care can be given to improve spiritual well-being, hope, and life satisfaction levels and to alleviate loneliness in intensive care patients.

RESUMO

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to determine nurses' ethical positions, whistleblowing intention and its causes, and to analyse the correlation between them, while revealing the personal and professional characteristics causing significant difference. BACKGROUND: In today's challenging healthcare settings, ethical dilemmas are inherent to nursing practices, leading to situations whereby nurses must consider whistleblowing and reasons such as reporting medical errors or misbehaviors. DESIGN: The study is descriptive, cross-sectional and correlational. METHODS: The data were collected from a convenience sample consisting of 294 nurses between 1 April and 30 June 2019, in four hospitals in two cities. An introductory information form, Ethics Position Questionnaire, Whistleblowing Scale and Causes of Whistleblowing Scale were employed to collect data. The data were analysed with descriptive, correlational, comparative and internal consistency analyses (Guidelines for reporting cross-sectional studies (Data S1)). RESULTS: It was found that nurses encountered (31.3%) and reported (85.9%) unethical incidents. According to the subscales, they obtained higher scores from idealism (4.37 ± 0.52), supportive whistleblowing (3.75 ± 0.72), and moral and professional values (3.77 ± 0.67). The Ethics Position Questionnaire, as well as the Whistleblowing Scale (r = .302) and the Causes of Whistleblowing Scale (r = .211) had a positive weak correlation (p < .001). Nurses' age, marital status, and professional and institutional experiences all created a significant difference (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The nurses mostly encountered unethical incidents associated with management. The rates of reporting the unethical incidents were high, and they were found not hesitating to report using whistleblowing, yet intended to keep the incidents within the institution. In addition, idealistic nurses were more likely to whistleblow, and their causes for whistleblowing were mostly associated with moral and professional values. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: It is recommended that nurses' ethical position, and whistleblowing intentions and causes should be supported and improved through the corporate culture.

RESUMO

Background: Informative and supportive nursing care is essential to reduce complications and improve outcomes in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) treated with noninvasive ventilation (NIV). The aim of this study was to determine the effect of provision of information and supportive nursing care on blood gas, vital signs, anxiety, stress, and agitation levels in people with COPD treated with NIV. Materials and methods: A randomized controlled design was used between September and December 2019. Patients with COPD treated with NIV in the intensive care unit (ICU) in a state hospital were included. A total of 60 patients, composed of 30 interventions and 30 controls, were randomly included in the sample. Provision of information and supportive nursing care was applied to the patients in the intervention group. Results: Following the intervention, the findings showed that the provision of information and supportive nursing care has a positive effect on the blood gas, vital signs, anxiety, stress, and agitation levels of patients. It was determined that the change in the averages of DASS-Anxiety, DASS-Stress, and RASS-Agitation of the intervention and control groups were statistically significant in terms of group × time (respectively, F = 41.214, p = 0.003; F = 7.561, p = 0.008; F = 65.004, p = 0.000) interaction (p <0.05). Conclusion: The provision of information and supportive nursing care is recommended to alleviate anxiety, stress, and agitation in people with COPD treated with NIV. RESUMO

According to the literature, fear affects death anxiety, and there is a strong relationship between death anxiety and psychopathology. Using a cross-sectional design, the current study investigated the experiences of nurses (N = 250) working in health institutions in Turkey during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and the correlation between fear and death anxiety. It was determined that nurses were exposed to many negative psychosocial changes during the pandemic. A moderate positive correlation was found between fear of COVID-19 and death anxiety scores. Initiatives to help control nurses' fear and death anxiety, a reasonable shift schedule, and provision of psychological counseling services are recommended.
