RESUMO

The aim was to determine the effect of season and breed group on follicular population, and presence and size of CL of heifers under tropical conditions. The seasons were hot-dry (March-June), hot-humid (July-October), and fresh-humid (November-February). Thirty Zebu (Brahman) and 38 F1 (Simmental × Brahman) heifers were used. Five evaluations were made in each season, at intervals of 7 days, to assess ovarian activity by ultrasound. Follicles were classified as small (≤4 mm), middle (4.1-8 mm), and large (≥8.1 mm) sizes, and also the size of CL, when present, was measured. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and logistic regression procedures. Mean number of small follicles was 11.6 ± 2.3 with no effect of season, breed group, or their interaction (P > 0.05). Mean number of middle follicles was influenced by season and breed group; the highest average was found in the fresh-humid season (4.0 ± 0.2) and in F1 heifers (3.6 ± 0.2; P < 0.05). The highest mean number of large follicles was in the hot-humid season (1.4 ± 0.1; P < 0.05). The highest maximum follicle diameter (MFD) mean was registered in the hot-humid season (1.3 mm; P < 0.05) and the lowest proportion of heifers with CL occurred in fresh-humid season (33.3%; P < 0.05). No effect of season, breed group, and interaction on the maximum diameter of the CL was found. In conclusion, season was a very important source of variation. Heifers in the hot-humid season had the largest follicles and MFD, and better cyclicity.

RESUMO

The legume Leucaena leucocephala (Leucaena) is widely used to supplement forage in silvopastoral livestock systems in Latin America. Little is known about its possible effects on the cow reproductive dynamic. The aim was to evaluate the effect of Leucaena foliage intake on re-establishment of ovarian activity and estrus behavior in early postpartum (7-90 days) cows. Twenty-four multiparous Bos taurus × Bos indicus cows were divided into two homogenous groups and assigned to one of two treatments: a silvopastoral system (SS, n = 12), consisting of an association of Cynodon nlemfuensis grass and L. leucocephala; and a control system (CS, n = 12), consisting of C. nlemfuensis alone. Intake of Leucaena in the SS ranged from 3.80 to 6.43 kg DM/cow/day. Plasma mimosine concentrations ranged from 1270 to 1530 µg/mL, and those for 2,3-dihydroxypyridine (DHP) from 147 to 729 µg/mL. No 3,4-DHP was detected in plasma. No difference (P > 0.05) between treatments was observed for the number of cows exhibiting small, medium, or dominant follicles, or estrus behavior. The number of cows which re-established ovarian cyclicity (n = 6) was lower (P < 0.05) in the SS than in the CS (n = 9). Corpus luteum lifespan was longer (P < 0.05) in the SS than in the CS. Intake of Leucaena affected the number of cows exhibiting ovarian cyclicity and extended corpus luteum life, but did not affect follicular development and estrus behavior.

RESUMO

Background: evaluation of reproductive traits of red deer is important to understand its performance. Objective: to evaluate seminal traits of red deer (Cervus elaphus) at three different stages of the breeding season (beginning, middle, and end) and to relate semen quality traits with pregnancy rate of hinds. Methods: scrotal circumference, semen volume, mass motility, individual motility, sperm concentration, morphology, and intact acrosomes were evaluated in seven stags. After evaluation, each of five stags was bred to 23 to 30 hinds. Pregnancy diagnosis was carried out using ultrasonography 45 days after the breeding season. Data were analyzed using the Student's t and chi-square tests, and simple correlation procedures. Results: scrotal circumference was reduced 5.4 cm (p<0.05) from the beginning to the end of the reproductive season, although semen volume was similar at the three different stages of the season. Sperm concentration (194 vs. 622.7/10(6)), mass motility (1.6 vs. 2.8), individual motility (28.6 vs. 63.3%), and intact acrosome (52.7 vs. 75.5%) were greater (p<0.05) at the middle of the breeding season in comparison with values found at the beginning. Percentage of abnormal spermatozoa was similar at the beginning and middle of the breeding season (p>0.05). No spermatozoa were found in stags at the end of the breeding season. Pregnancy rates were similar among bucks (p>0.05), ranging from 80% to 91.3%, and there was no relationship between pregnancy rate and semen traits. Conclusions: there was a clear seasonality of semen traits of red deer and no relationship between semen traits and pregnancy rate.

The aims of this experiment were to evaluate the addition of coconut water in natura to the freezing media, compare the effect of deionized water vs filtered water of coconut over the post-thaw seminal characteristics, and evaluate the effect of the deionized water and in natura coconut water on the seminal characteristics of boar sperm at different post-thaw times. Thirty-four ejaculates were used divided in three aliquots which received one of the following treatments (T): T1, LEY (bidistilled water, lactose, and egg yolk) and LEYGO (LEY + glycerol and Orvus ET paste); T2, LEY(A) (coconut deionized water, lactose, and egg yolk)-LEYGO(A); and T3, LEY(B) (in natura coconut water, lactose, and egg yolk)-LEYGO(B). Samples of boar semen were frozen according to the Westendorf method, thawed at 38°C, and evaluated at three incubation times (0, 30, and 60 min). Seminal characteristics assessed were motility (Mot), acrosomal integrity (AInt), membrane integrity (MInt), and mitochondrial activity (MAct). T1 showed a higher percentage of viable sperm than T3 (Mot 36.5 vs 5.4 %, AInt 61.8 vs 41.2 %, MInt 50.4 vs 41.3 %, and MAct 56.9 vs 50.5 %). T2 kept a higher percentage of viable sperm at all incubation times. In natura coconut water showed a detrimental effect over the viability of the frozen-thawed boar semen. Deionized coconut water improved the boar semen viability post-thaw, outperforming results of in natura coconut water.
