RESUMO

Treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is a challenge for health care professionals. Therefore, new approaches have been investigated, such as the use of natural products. Objective This systematic review aims to summarize the natural products used in treatment of experimental models of TMD. Methodology A systematic search was performed in the databases Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, SciELO, LILACS, and Scholar Google databases in January 2020, dating from their inception. Pre-clinical studies with natural products for intervention in experimental TMD were included. Two reviewers independently selected the studies, extracted the data, and evaluated the risk of bias. Results 17 records were selected, and 17 different natural products were found, including three lectins, three plants or algae extracts, three sulfated polysaccharides, three cocoa preparations, and five isolated compounds. Concerning the risk of bias, most studies lacked on randomization and blinding. Nociception induced by phlogistic agents was evaluated in most articles, and in five studies it was associated with analysis of inflammatory parameters. In order to investigate the mechanism of action of the natural products used, eight studies evaluated expression of neural or glial molecular markers. Conclusions 16 of 17 natural products found in this review presented positive results, showing their potential for treatment of TMD. However, the lack of methodological clarity can influence these results.

J Strength Cond Res 34(7): 2076-2083, 2020-The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of prophylactic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (i.e., ibuprofen) on physical performance, vertical jump, muscle biomarkers, liver, kidney, acute pain, and hydration status of participants in the 42-km Trail Running Challenge, a long-distance race integrated over mountain routes. The sample consisted of 20 men randomly divided into 2 groups: a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG), with 12 completing the race (41.1 ± 8.8 years; 75.7 ± 12.1 kg) and included in the final analysis. The EG were administered an ibuprofen capsule (400 mg) 15 minutes before the beginning of the race and again after 5 hours of racing if the route was not yet completed. There were significant time main effects for creatine kinase (p = 0.001; f Cohen = 0.25), lactate dehydrogenase (p < 0.001; f Cohen = 2.05), aspartate aminotransferase (p = 0.002; f Cohen = 1.53), creatinine (p = 0.002; f Cohen = 2.24), urea (p = 0.001; f Cohen = 2.25), heart rate (p < 0.001; f Cohen = 4.88), and pain scores (p < 0.001; f Cohen = 1.93) all of which increased during the race. There was a group × time interaction for squat jump, which significantly decreased only in the CG (p = 0.045; f Cohen = 2.17). This may have been related to increased frequency of pain reported after the race in the gastrocnemius of the CG compared with the EG (p ≤ 0.05). It was concluded that ibuprofen intake did not reduce muscle damage during the competition but maintained leg muscular power performance (i.e., vertical jump), possibly by reducing gastrocnemius muscle pain.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Leonurus sibiricus L. (Lamiaceae), popularly known as motherwort, or "erva-de-macaé" or "rubim" in Brazil, is a plant used for the treatment of inflammatory conditions, but few studies have evaluated this anti-inflammatory activity or other activities that may be relevant. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study was undertaken to investigate the antioxidant, antinociceptive and topical anti-inflammatory effects of the ethanol extract of L. sibiricus (EELs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chromatographic analysis, determination of total phenolic and flavonoid contents and in vitro antioxidant assays were performed, while the formalin test and ear inflammation induced by 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA) were performed in mice. RESULTS: We observed that total phenolic and flavonoids content in EELs were respectively 60.1mg of gallic acid equivalent/g of extract and 15.4mg of catechin equivalent/g of extract. Chlorogenic, caffeic, p-coumaric and ferulic acids, as well as quercetin were identified in EELs. This extract also led to the consumption of the radicals 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and nitric oxide, increased the ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) and inhibited the spontaneous or FeSO4-induced in vitro lipid peroxidation. In the formalin test, oral pretreatment with EELs (400mg/kg) reduced (p<0.001) the licking/biting time in the second phase, but not in the first phase. In the ear inflammation induced by TPA, the concomitant topical administration of EELs (0.3-3mg/ear) significantly reduced the edema, myeloperoxidase activity, levels of tumoral necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1ß and lipoperoxidation, as well as increased FRAP in ear tissue when compared to vehicle-treated ears. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicate that EELs has antioxidant, antinociceptive and topical anti-inflammatory activities, supporting the use of this plant in folk medicine.
