RESUMO

Sound speed profiles in the ocean are determined by seawater properties, where horizontal variability of thermal stratification modulates sonar detection distance. This work assesses the impacts of upwelling dynamics on sound speed profile in enclosed coastal areas by means of temperature observations acquired with a low-cost platform in Anjos Cove, Cabo Frio, Brazil. The Integrated Acquisition System for Research in Acoustics (IARA) consists of a customized 10-meter-long chain of smart temperature sensors (±0.1°C accuracy) mounted in an anchored vertical cable and an echo sounder for tide level measurements. From 2021 to 2023 a number of intrusion events of the cold South Atlantic Central Water (SACW) took place along the Cabo Frio continental shelf, some of which were recorded in the inner region of the Anjos Cove by IARA. Sound speed profiles computed by applying TEOS-10 standards indicate that the sound propagation within Anjos Cove varies often, i.e., several orders of magnitude, under the influence of SACW intrusion events. The phenomenon reflects information from deeper waters on a coastal scale, even at small depths.

RESUMO

Nowadays, various collaborations are creating immense machines to try to track and understand the origin of high-energy cosmic particles (e.g., IceCube, ANTARES, Baikal-GVD, P-ONE). The detection mechanism of these sophisticated experiments relies mainly on an optical signal generated by the passage of charged particles on a dielectric medium (Cerenkov radiation). Unfortunately, the dim light produced by passing particles cannot travel too far until it fades away, creating the necessity to instrument large areas with short spacing between sensors. The range limitation of the optical technique has created a fertile ground for experimenting on the detection of acoustic signals generated by radiation-thermoacoustics. Despite the increased use of the thermoacoustic technique, the instrumentation to capture the faint acoustic signals is still scarce. Therefore, this work has the objective to contribute with information on the critical stages of an affordable submersible thermoacoustic sensor: namely the piezoelectric transducer and the amplifying electronics. We tested the sensor in a [Formula: see text] non-anechoic tank using an infrared ([Formula: see text]) Q-switched Nd:YAG laser as a pulsed energy source to create the characteristic signals of the thermoacoustic phenomena. In accordance with the thermoacoustic model, a polarity inversion of the pressure signal was observed when transiting from temperatures below the point of maximum density of water to temperatures above it. Also, the amplitude of the acoustic signal displayed a linear relationship with pulse energies up to [Formula: see text] ([Formula: see text]). Despite the use of cost-effective parts and simple construction methods, the proposed sensor design is a viable instrument for experimental thermoacoustic investigations on high-energy particles.

RESUMO

Magnetotactic microorganisms use the interaction of internal biomineralized nanoparticles with the geomagnetic field to orientate. The movement of the magnetotactic multicellular prokaryote Candidatus Magnetoglobus multicellularis under an applied magnetic field was observed. A method using digital image processing techniques was used to track the organism trajectory to simultaneously obtain its body radius, velocity, U-turn diameter, and the reorientation time. The magnetic moment was calculated using a self-consistent method. The distribution of magnetic moments and radii present two well-characterized peaks at (9 +/- 2) x 10(-15) and (20 +/- 3) x 10(-15) A m(2) and (3.6 +/- 0.1) and (4.3 +/- 0.1) mum, respectively. For the first time, simultaneous determination of the distribution of the organism radii and magnetic moment was obtained from the U-turn method by a new digital imaging processing. The bimodal distributions support an organism reproduction process model based on electron microscopy observations. These results corroborate the prokaryote multicellular hypothesis for Candidatus M. multicellularis.

RESUMO

Pachycondyla marginata (P.m.), a migratory and termitophageous ant, hunting only the termite species Neocapritermes opacus, migrates significantly oriented 13 degrees with respect to the magnetic North-South axis. Results of hysteresis curves at room temperature of four Pachycondyla marginata heads, thorax, pairs of antennae and abdomens, oriented parallel to the magnetic field, indicate that the antennae give the strongest saturation magnetization, suggesting this sensory organ as being also a magnetic sensory organ. The total saturation magnetization in a whole P.m. is composed by 42 +/- 3%, 24 +/- 3%, 19 +/- 3% and 15 +/- 3% of antennae, head, thorax and abdomen contributions, respectively. The abdomen hysteresis curve presents a wasp-waisted loop with Hcr/Hc of 4.75, characteristic of mixed magnetic systems.
