RESUMO

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour is an uncommon tumour in cats. The current case report aims to present the diagnosis, treatment and histopathology of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour that developed in the cerebellopontine angle region of a cat. A 4-year-old 4.2-kg female calico cat was brought to the animal hospital with the complaints of loss of balance, leaning against the wall and behavioural changes. During the neurological examination, the patient was observed to have a right-sided head tilt accompanied by ipsilateral ventral strabismus. On magnetic resonance imaging scan, a mass was identified at the right cerebellopontine angle. The surgical removal of the mass was carried out using a caudo-tentorial approach. The histopathological analysis revealed the presence of a malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour. This case report contributes to the existing knowledge in the field presenting the characteristics of a malignant peripheral nerve tumour that was not associated with any nerve in the cerebellopontine angle in a cat.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Aortic valve stenosis is a common valve disease in developed countries where the elderly population is high. Aortic valve stenosis is not a simple calcification; it is a dynamic process in which uric acid plays a serious role. We investigated the role of the serum uric acid/creatinine (SUA/Cr) ratio, which is an indicator of uric acid level independent of renal function, in determining the prognosis in patients who had undergone transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, 357 patients who underwent TAVI for symptomatic severe aortic stenosis between March 2019 and March 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. After applying exclusion criteria, the remaining 269 patients were included in the study. According to the Valve Academic Research Consortium criteria, major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE) defined the endpoint of the study. Therefore, patients were divided into two groups: the MACCE group and the no MACCE group. RESULTS: Serum uric acid level was significantly higher in the MACCE group (7.0 ± 2.6) than in the no MACCE group (6.0 ± 1.7) (p = 0.008). SUA/Cr ratio was significantly higher in the MACCE group (6.7 ± 2.3) than in the no MACCE group (5.9 ± 1.1) (p = 0.007). CONCLUSIONS: The serum UA/creatinine ratio is important in determining the prognosis of patients undergoing TAVI.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is higher than 20% in patients with chronic kidney disease. In this study, we sought to define the predictors of CIN and develop a risk prediction tool in patients with chronic kidney disease. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients aged 18 years and older who underwent invasive coronary angiography with an iodine-based contrast media between March 2014 and June 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. Independent predictors for CIN development were identified and a new risk prediction tool was created that included these predictors. RESULTS: In total, 283 patients included in the study were divided into those who developed CIN (n=39, 13.8%) and those who did not (n=244, 86.2%). Male gender (OR: 4.874, 95% CI: 2.044-11.621), LVEF (OR: 0.965, 95% CI: 0.936-0.995), diabetes mellitus (OR: 1.711, 95% CI: 1.094-2.677), and e-GFR (OR: 0.880, 95% CI: 0.845-0.917), were identified as independent predictors for the development of CIN in the multivariate analysis. A new scoring system has been designed that can score a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 8 points. Patients with a new scoring system score of ≥4 were at approximately 40 times higher risk of developing CIN than others (OR: 39.9, 95% CI: 5.4-295.3). The area under the curve value of CIN's new scoring system was 0.873 (95% CI, 0.821-0.925). CONCLUSIONS: We found that four easily accessible and routinely collected variables, including sex, diabetes status, e-GFR, and LVEF, were independently associated with the development of CIN. We believe that using this risk prediction tool in routine clinical practice may guide physicians to use preventive medications and techniques in high-risk patients for CIN.

RESUMO

A prism-shaped cage was obtained via the Friedel-Crafts reaction in a 2:3 mixture of trisfuryl and bis-isopropenyl precursors, in a remarkable yield of 40% considering six C-C bonds formed in a one-pot manner. The cage contains two π-electron rich trisfuryl platforms bridged in a face-to-face manner with three p-xylylene linkers. Therefore, it enables accommodation of π-electron poor guests with complementary size, including biscationic viologen.

RESUMO

Breast cancer is the second type of cancer with a high probability of brain metastasis and has always been one of the main problems of breast cancer research due to the lack of effective treatment methods. Demand for developing an effective drug against breast cancer brain metastasis and finding molecular mechanisms that play a role in effective treatment are gradually increasing. However, there is no effective anticancer therapeutic drug or treatment method specific to breast cancer, in particular, for patients with a high risk of brain metastases. It is known that mTOR and HDAC enzymes play essential roles in the development of breast cancer brain metastasis. Therefore, it is vital to develop some new drugs and conduct studies toward the inhibition of these enzymes that might be a possible solution to treat breast cancer brain metastasis. In this study, a series of 1,10-phenanthroline and Prodigiosin derivatives consisting of their copper(I) complexes have been synthesized and characterized. Their biological activities were tested in vitro on six different cell lines (including the normal cell line). To obtain additional parallel validations of the experimental data, some in silico modeling studies were carried out with mTOR and HDAC1 enzymes, which are very crucial drug targets, to discover novel and potent drugs for breast cancer and related brain metastases disease.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Frailty is a state of homeostenosis associated with adverse outcomes. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) increases considerably by aging and shares the common risk factors with frailty. We aimed to examine the prevalence and independent associates of frailty status in CKD patients. DESIGN: In this single-centre, cross-sectional study, we used the five-item Fatigue, Resistance, Ambulation, Illnesses and Loss of Weight (FRAIL) scale to evaluate frailty. A binary logistic regression analysis model including the parameters found to have relationship with frailty in univariate analyses was used to detect independent associates of frailty status. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were given. PARTICIPANTS: Study included 148 patients aged 18-80. Sixty (60) patients were end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on maintenance hemodialysis (HD) (at least for 3 months) and 88 were stage 3-4 CKD patients. Thirty-seven (37) patients (42%) were eGFR G3a, 31 patients (35.3%) were eGFR G3b and 20 patients (22.7%) were eGFR G4 in stage 3-4 CKD patients. MEASUREMENTS: Demographics, etiology of CKD, comorbidities, regular drugs, dialysis-related and laboratory data were recorded. FRAIL scale was scored as follows; 0=robust, 1-2=prefrail, and ≥3= frail. The frailty status was compared between frail+prefrail group vs robust (non-frail) group. RESULTS: The prevalences of prefrailty and frailty were 68.3% and 3.3% in HD group and 53.4% and zero in stage 3-4 CKD group, respectively (p = 0.025). In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, being in HD group (OR=3.87, 95% CI= 1.06-14.19, p=0.04), older age (OR=1.09, 95% CI= 1.04-1.13) and female sex (OR=9.13, 95%CI= 2.82-29.46) were independent risk factors for frailty (p<0.001, for both). CONCLUSION: Prefrailty and frailty are quite common among HD and CKD stage 3-4 patients. Being an HD patient is an independent risk factor for non-robust (frail or prefrail) status. Our findings point out a remarkably high prevalence of frailty severity (prefrailty/frailty) phenotype among patients with advanced CKD stages.

RESUMO

Although the currently available antidepressants are well established in the treatment of the major depressive disorder (MDD), there is strong variability in the response of individual patients. Reliable predictors to guide treatment decisions before or in an early stage of treatment are needed. DNA-methylation has been proven a useful biomarker in different clinical conditions, but its importance for mechanisms of antidepressant response has not yet been determined. 80 MDD patients were selected out of >500 participants from the Early Medication Change (EMC) cohort with available genetic material based on their antidepressant response after four weeks and stratified into clear responders and age- and sex-matched non-responders (N = 40, each). Early improvement after two weeks was analyzed as a secondary outcome. DNA-methylation was determined using the Illumina EPIC BeadChip. Epigenome-wide association studies were performed and differentially methylated regions (DMRs) identified using the comb-p algorithm. Enrichment was tested for hallmark gene-sets and in genome-wide association studies of depression and antidepressant response. No epigenome-wide significant differentially methylated positions were found for treatment response or early improvement. Twenty DMRs were associated with response; the strongest in an enhancer region in SORBS2, which has been related to cardiovascular diseases and type II diabetes. Another DMR was located in CYP2C18, a gene previously linked to antidepressant response. Results pointed towards differential methylation in genes associated with cardiac function, neuroticism, and depression. Linking differential methylation to antidepressant treatment response is an emerging topic and represents a step towards personalized medicine, potentially facilitating the prediction of patients' response before treatment.

RESUMO

The development of new biosensor technologies and their active use as wearable devices have offered mobility and flexibility to conventional western medicine and personal fitness tracking. In the development of biosensors, transducers stand out as the main elements converting the signals sourced from a biological event into a detectable output. Combined with the suitable bio-receptors and the miniaturization of readout electronics, the functionality and design of the transducers play a key role in the construction of wearable devices for personal health control. Ever-growing research and industrial interest in new transducer technologies for point-of-care (POC) and wearable bio-detection have gained tremendous acceleration by the pandemic-induced digital health transformation. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of transducers for biosensors and their wearable applications that empower users for the active tracking of biomarkers and personal health parameters.

RESUMO

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the pit and fissure morphology of the permanent first molars (PFMs) in the dentition of 7- to 12-year-old patients in Turkish children. Patients and Methods: The study was conducted on 706 patients who attended the Dokuz Eylul University Child Clinic. Examinations of the patients were carried out with dental unit light, mouth mirror, and probe by two dentists. Age, gender, plaque scores, pit and fissure morphology, caries, restorations, and missing teeth were recorded. Results: Of the 706 patients included in this study, 441 (62.5%) of them have affected PFMs. Intermediate type fissure morphology (57.5%) was seen as the most common type. A positive correlation was observed between the age and the caries experience (p = 0.000). Patients with deep pits and fissure morphology have more caries affected teeth than patients with shallow pit and fissure morphology, and the difference was statistically significant (p = 0.000). Patients with deep pits and fissure morphology have significantly more plaque accumulation on PFMs compared to the patients with shallow and intermediate fissure morphology (p = 0.000). Conclusions: Despite the limitations of the study, we can conclude that the patients with deep pit-fissure morphology are more susceptible to caries development and plaque accumulation than the patients with shallow and intermediate type pit and fissure morphology.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Postoperative pain following shoulder surgery is a devastating situation. Several approaches, including regional nerve blocks such as combined suprascapular nerve block and axillary nerve block (SSNB+ANB) and peri-articular infiltration (PAI) analgesia, have been investigated to manage postoperative pain. This study aimed to compare the effects of PAI and SSNB+ANB on postoperative pain scores and analgesic consumption after arthroscopic shoulder surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A single-center prospective, randomized interventional study with a two-arm parallel design was performed. Sixty patients with arthroscopic shoulder surgery were randomized to SSNB+ANB (n=30) and PAI (n=30) group. Postoperative pain scores, analgesic requirements, and complications were evaluated in the postoperative anesthesia recovery unit and during the postoperative 24 hours. RESULTS: The age of patients in Group PAI was significantly higher than in Group SSNB+ANB (p<0.001). Groups were similar, considering demographic and clinical characteristics (p>0.05). The length of anesthesia and surgery was significantly longer in Group PAI (p=0.009 and p=0.025). Although there was no significant difference in the amount of change in pain scores for postoperative 24 hours (p=0.537), postoperative pain scores were significantly higher in Group SSNB+ANB group than Group PAI during postoperative 24 hours except for the 12th-hour evaluation (p<0.05). Postoperative opioid requirement and rescue analgesic medications were significantly higher in Group SSNB+ANB (p<0.001 and p=0.001). The number of postoperative nausea and vomiting attacks was similar (p=0.317). CONCLUSIONS: PAI seems to be a more feasible and practical analgesic approach for managing postoperative pain after arthroscopic shoulder surgery regarding pain score and cumulative analgesic requirement.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Left ventricle (LV) dysfunction remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP) and has prognostic significance. However, new prognostic indicators may be more useful in clinical practice. There is a growing interest in the role of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) in cardiovascular diseases. Blood urea nitrogen is an indicator of cardiac dysfunction and neurohormonal activation. We aimed to determine the relationship of BUN/LV ejection fraction ratio (BUNLVEFr) with long-term mortality and de novo decompensated heart failure (HF) in SAP patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study comprised 603 consecutive SAP patients who underwent coronary angiography. The median duration of the follow-up period was 112.6±17.8 months. All-cause mortality and de novo decompensated HF were determined as the endpoints. RESULTS: Adverse cardiac events were observed in 141 patients (23.3%), including mortality in 103 (17.1%) and decompensated HF in 38 (6.3%) of them during the follow-up period. Age (p=0.027), BUNLVEFr (p=0.001), glucose (p=0.043), hemoglobin (p=0.035), and Gensini score (p=0.012) were found as independent predictors of mortality and decompensated HF. BUNLVEFr was superior to BUN alone (BUNLVEFr vs. BUN: Z=5.715, p<0.001) and LVEF alone (BUNLVEFr vs. LVEF: Z=4.075, p<0.001) in predicting endpoints. In addition, BUNLVEFr >29 predicted all-cause mortality/decompensated HF with high sensitivity (78%) and low specificity (68%). CONCLUSIONS: BUNLVEFr may provide better prognostic information than either BUN or EF can give alone in determining therapeutic strategies for SAP patients.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a significant contributor of mortality all over the world. Emergency departments have a critical role for diagnosing a suspected sepsis in a patient, since early and proper administration of antibiotics may decrease mortality significantly. But, the unavailability of an objective and reliable diagnostic test is the major challenge of this critical issue. AIMS: The aim of this study is to evaluate the prognostic value of a novel biomarker, the ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) in patients with sepsis and septic shock in emergency department. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This prospective, observational study included 81 patients with sepsis or septic shock and 75 controls. Sociodemographic characteristics of the patients, site of infection, IMA levels, other biomarkers (procalcitonin, pH, lactate), mortality at 24-h and 28-day were evaluated. RESULTS: The serum IMA levels in patient and control groups were 117.8 ± 85 IU/g and 115.8 ± 134.0 IU/g, respectively (P = 0.072). There was a weak but statistically significant positive correlation between IMA and lactate levels (P = 0.009). The mortality rates of patient group at 24-h and 28 days were 21% and 79%, respectively, but serum IMA levels were not found to be a prognostic marker to predict mortality. CONCLUSION: The main reason for the similarity between groups regarding IMA levels was thought to be associated with the distribution of the acute and chronic health problems other than sepsis in the control group. Emergency department physicians should not only depend on serum IMA levels for predicting the prognosis of patients with sepsis or septic shock.

RESUMO

Designing new materials for the effective detoxification of chemical warfare agents (CWAs) is of current interest given the recent use of CWAs. Although halogenated boron-dipyrromethene derivatives (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene or BDP or BODIPY) at the 2 and 6 positions have been extensively explored as efficient photosensitizers for generating singlet oxygen (1O2) in homogeneous media, their utilization in the design of porous organic polymers (POPs) has remained elusive due to the difficulty of controlling polymerization processes through cross-coupling synthesis pathways. Our approach to overcome these difficulties and prepare halogenated BODIPY-based porous organic polymers (X-BDP-POP where X = Br or I) represents an attractive alternative through post-synthesis modification (PSM) of the parent hydrogenated polymer. Upon synthesis of both the parent polymer, H-BDP-POP, and its post-synthetically modified derivatives, Br-BDP-POP and I-BDP-POP, the BET surface areas of all POPs have been measured and found to be 640, 430, and 400 m2·g-1, respectively. In addition, the insertion of heavy halogen atoms at the 2 and 6 positions of the BODIPY unit leads to the quenching of fluorescence (both polymer and solution-phase monomer forms) and the enhancement of phosphorescence (particularly for the iodo versions of the polymers and monomers), as a result of efficient intersystem crossing. The heterogeneous photocatalytic activities of both the parent POP and its derivatives for the detoxification of the sulfur mustard simulant, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), have been examined; the results show a significant enhancement in the generation of singlet oxygen (1O2). Both the bromination and iodination of H-BDP-POP served to shorten by 5-fold of the time needed for the selective and catalytic photo-oxidation of CEES to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO).

RESUMO

Collisional intermolecular interactions between excited states form short-lived dimers and complexes that lead to the emergence of excimer/exciplex emission of lower energy, a phenomenon which must be differentiated from the photoluminescence (PL) arising from the monomeric molecules. Although the utilization of noncovalent bonding interactions, leading to the generation of excimer/exciplex PL, has been investigated extensively, precise control of the aggregates and their persistence at very low concentrations remains a rare phenomenon. In the search for a fresh approach, we sought to obtain exciplex PL from permanent structures by incorporating anthracene moieties into pyridinium-containing mechanically interlocked molecules. Beyond the optical properties of the anthracene moieties, their π-extended nature enforces [π···π] stacking that can overcome the Coulombic repulsion between the pyridinium units, affording an efficient synthesis of an octacationic homo[2]catenane. Notably, upon increasing the ionic strength by adding tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate, the catenane yield increases significantly as a result of the decrease in Coulombic repulsions between the pyridinium units. Although the ground-state photophysical properties of the free cyclophane and the catenane are similar and show a charge-transfer band at ∼455 nm, their PL characters are distinct, denoting different excited states. The cyclophane emits at ∼562 nm (quantum yield ϕF = 3.6%, emission lifetime τs = 3 ns in MeCN), which is characteristic of a disubstituted anthracene-pyridinium linker. By contrast, the catenane displays an exciplex PL at low concentration (10-8 M) with an emission band centered on 650 nm (ϕF = 0.5%, τs = 14 ns) in MeCN and at 675 nm in aqueous solution. Live-cell imaging performed in MIAPaCa-2 prostate cancer cells confirmed that the catenane exciplex emission can be detected at micromolar concentrations.

RESUMO

In hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the presence of cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been linked to drug resistance, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and cancer relapse. This study investigates the expression profile of ZEB1, ZEB2, ABCG2 in HCC-CSCs, and the role of EMT promoter ZEB2 in cells treated with resveratrol. The expression of ZEB1, ZEB2 and ABCG2 transcripts were analyzed in CD133^(+)/CD44^(+) cells isolated from the PLC/PRF/5 cell line. ZEB2-dependent ABCG2 gene expression and the effects of resveratrol on proliferation, cell cycle and apoptosis were explored in SNU398 cell clones. An inverse correlation between ZEB1/ZEB2 and ABCG2 levels were observed both in CSCs and in ZEB2-knock-down cells. The resveratrol treatment significantly decreased cell viability, while promoting cell cycle arrest in ZEB2-independent manner. Interestingly, resveratrol-treated cells with low levels of ZEB2 were resistant to apoptosis. The interplay of expression levels of ABCG2 and ZEB family EMT transcription factors may play a role in establishing CSC-like phenotype in HCC cells resistant to resveratrol.

RESUMO

Protection of enzymes with synthetic materials is a viable strategy to stabilize, and hence to retain, the reactivity of these highly active biomolecules in non-native environments. Active synthetic supports, coupled to encapsulated enzymes, can enable efficient cascade reactions which are necessary for processes like light-driven CO2 reduction, providing a promising pathway for alternative energy generation. Herein, a semi-artificial system-containing an immobilized enzyme, formate dehydrogenase, in a light harvesting scaffold-is reported for the conversion of CO2 to formic acid using white light. The electron-mediator Cp*Rh(2,2'-bipyridyl-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid)Cl was anchored to the nodes of the metal-organic framework NU-1006 to facilitate ultrafast photo-induced electron transfer when irradiated, leading to the reduction of the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide at a rate of about 28 mM·h-1. Most importantly, the immobilized enzyme utilizes the reduced coenzyme to generate formic acid selectively from CO2 at a high turnover frequency of about 865 h-1 in 24 h. The outcome of this research is the demonstration of a feasible pathway for solar-driven carbon fixation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We aimed to investigate the predictive value of the fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR) regarding the development of major cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). METHODS: This was a prospective, observational cohort study that included 261 consecutive patients who were treated with PCI. The patients were grouped according to the occurrence of MACE during the follow-up period. RESULTS: During follow-up, MACE occurred in 68 (26%) patients. The FAR was independently predictive of MACE (HR: 1.017, 95% CI: 1.010-1.024, p < 0.001). In addition, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and a diagnosis of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) were independent predictors of MACE. The area under the curve (AUC) of the multivariable model, including LVEF and diagnosis of STEMI, was 0.707 (95% CI: 0.631-0.782, p < 0.001). When the FAR was added to the multivariable model, the AUC was 0.770 (95% CI: 0.702-0.838, z = 2.820, difference p = 0.0048). CONCLUSION: The FAR could be used for the prediction of MACE in patients with ACS who have undergone PCI.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Cardiac tamponade (CT) is characterized by compression of the cardiac chambers due to pericardial fluid accumulation. The etiology and prognosis may vary in different regions, and thus patient series from various regions can be useful for exploring the etiological and prognostic disparities. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics of patients with imminent CT, to evaluate the diagnostic performance of biochemical, microbiologic, and pathologic laboratory analysis, and to ascertain the prognosis of CT patients. METHODS: We enrolled all patients with imminent CT who underwent percutaneous pericardiocentesis between July 2012 and December 2017 in this retrospective study. The patients were classified into three etiology groups: (a) malignancy (MRCT); (b) iatrogenic/mechanical complication of myocardial infarction (IMCT); and (c) other causes (OCT). Clinical information, laboratory findings, and survival data were recorded. RESULTS: In total, 186 pericardiocentesis procedures were performed on 153 consecutive patients with CT. The median follow-up was 137 days (range: 1-1937). The MRCT group had the highest mortality rate (79%) in 12 months, while the OCT group had the lowest rate (27%). We determined that increased age, higher serum urea levels, and malignancy-related CT were independent predictors of mortality. The mortality rates of the MRCT and IMCT groups were similar, with both of them being significantly higher than the rate of the OCT group. In all, 15 patients were diagnosed with a new malignancy via pericardial fluid cytology. CONCLUSION: Patients in the MRCT and IMCT groups had a poor prognosis. The presence of malignancy was found to be the most powerful predictor of mortality in CT patients.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: In response to the Syrian Civil War, the Turkish Armed Forces has focused its attention on internal security and border operations, thereby cushioning against both the threat of terrorist activities and supporting international peace efforts. This study was performed to evaluate the level of knowledge, skills and any behavioural changes after the combat medic course to enhance future courses. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between 25 December 2017 and 22 March 2018 using 40 combatant personnel undertaking the combat medic training course. Attendants' perception of self- sufficiency was assessed using a specifically designed questionnaire using a 5-point Likert-type scale. RESULTS : Trainee perception of self-confidence had the highest mean increase post course (4.1±0.7). Trainee academic self-perception demonstrated the lowest mean post course score in the domain of "using of the tactical emergency medications and liquids" (3.80±1.02). The highest mean was in the domain of bleeding control (4.63±0.49). CONCLUSIONS: Improvements to specific components of the course have been identified and implemented to ensure greater success in the operational field environment. In particular, the total course hours will be increased and simulation encouraged using the most recent equipment used in the field.

RESUMO

AIM: We intended to investigate the association of bilirubin with total mortality in patients with chronic total coronary occlusion (CTO). METHODS: We included 172 patients who underwent coronary angiography due to stable angina pectoris and had CTO. We checked the viability of patients after 9 years of follow-up. RESULTS: Direct bilirubin levels were significantly lower in the non-viable group. We revealed age (OR = 1.045, 95% C.I: 1.009‒1.083; p = 0.015) and direct bilirubin concentrations (OR = 0.029, 95% C.I: 0.002‒0.435; p = 0.029) as independent predictors of mortality. Direct bilirubin value of > 0.2 mg/dL was associated with decreased mortality with a sensitivity of 85 %, and a specificity of 46 %. CONCLUSION: Serum direct bilirubin concentrations independently predict total mortality in patients with chronic total occlusion over 9 years of follow-up (Tab. 1, Fig. 2, Ref. 23).
