RESUMO

This study was conducted with the purpose of researching the effect of lycopene application on lipoprotein, paraoxonase (PON) and cytokines that are projected to be used in the diagnosis and treatment of diabetes by making experimental diabetes. At the end of a 1-month trial period, under ether anesthesia with jelly tubes, blood samples were taken from rat hearts. Blood samples were centrifuged and serum was obtained. From the serum samples, HbA1c, paraoxonase activity, lipoprotein levels and cytokines were determined. HbA1c levels and PON activity were found to be p < 0.001. At the triglyceride level, with regard to the control group, in all the groups a significant rise occurred (p ≤ 0.001). At the cholesterol level, with regard to the control group, a decline was observed in the other groups (p < 0.05). At the VLDL level, with regard to the control group, a significant rise was observed in the other groups (p < 0.05). At the HDL (p < 0.001) and LDL (p < 0.05) levels, with regard to the control group, a significant decline was observed in the other groups. At the TNF-α, IL-2, IL-6 and IL-10 levels no difference was found (p > 0.05). Experimental diabetes models have an important place in analyzing diabetes complications and determining treatment approaches.

This study was planned to determine the effects of lycopene treatment on serum protein fractions in experimental diabetic rats. In order to induce diabetes in rats in the diabetes (D) and diabetes + lycopene (DL) groups, rats were given 45 mg/kg single-dose streptozotocin intraperitoneally. Lycopene (10 mg/kg/day dissolved in sunflower oil) was administered to the rats in the lycopene-only (L) and DL groups. Blood glucose levels and HbA1c% in DL group and diabetes group increased (p < 0.05) compared to control and L group. Total protein, albumin, α1, α2, and ß globulin fractions of diabetic and DL groups were lower than control and L groups (p < 0.05). D group had lowest gamma (γ) globulin levels among other groups (p < 0.05). The γ globulin levels was slightly increased than diabetic groups (D and DL), but it was still lower than control and L groups (p < 0.05). The highest value of A/G ratio was observed in diabetic group. Similarly, the % level of A/G ratio of D group was higher than other groups. It was noted that the A/G ratio decreased and reached to control group levels after lycopene treatment.

In this study, the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant known as lycopene was applied to rats with experimental diabetes with the aim of investigating the detection of diabetes-related complications, and to determine the possible role of lycopene in diabetes complications regarding the effects of ACE activity. In order to induce diabetes in rats in the diabetes (D) and diabetes+lycopene (DL) groups, rats were given 45 mg/kg single-dose streptozotocin (STZ) intraperitoneally (i.p.); lycopene (10 mg/kg/day dissolved in sunflower oil) was administered to the rats in the lycopene-only (L) and DL groups. Blood glucose levels and HbA1c% in diabetes+lycopene group and diabetes group increased (p <0.05) compared to control and only lycopene treated group. The highest level of ACE activity was observed in the (D) group (p < 0.05). Activity in the (L) group was also significantly greater than in the control group (p < 0.05). The (DL) group had lower (p < 0.05). ACE activity than the (D) group. Lycopene implementation was found to be effective in the inhibition of ACE activity, an important indicator of diabetes-related complications.

AIM: To present the results of a cross-sectional epidemiological analysis of a familial outbreak of fascioliasis in Eastern Anatolia and to discuss the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic properties of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A screening group consisting of 92 individuals from the same family with a history of watercress ingestion and a control group consisting of 30 individuals from neighboring families were included in the study. In both groups, full blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, liver function tests and total IgE levels were assessed. Stool analysis was performed on three consecutive days with native, lugol and sedimentation methods. The diagnosis was based on the detection of parasite ova in the stool or alternatively based on consistent clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings or positive clinical findings in combination with a positive ELISA test. Abdominal ultrasonography and computerized tomography scans were performed on all patients. RESULTS: 24 patients (21 women and 3 men) were diagnosed with fascioliasis. The mean age was 24.5±18.6 years (range, 5-64 years). All cases had a history of watercress ingestion, malaise, fatigue, lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. Clinical features included: weight loss was present in 18 cases (75%), dyspepsia in 12 (50%), headache in 11 (45.8%), sweating in 10 (41.7%), fever and dyspnea each in 8 (33.3%), nausea and vomiting in 6 (25%), and itching in 4 (16.75). The most common laboratory abnormalities were total IgE elevation in 19 cases (79.2%) and eosinophilia in 17 (70.8%). The eosinophilia was >20% in 14 cases (58.3%) and the total IgE was >500IU/ml in 15 cases (62.5%). Stool examination for ova was positive in 11 cases. 10 patients had positive clinical, laboratory and radiological findings. A further three patients were diagnosed based on their clinical findings and their ELISA results. All cases had positive ELISA results. All patients, except one pregnant woman, were treated with 10mg/kg triclabendazole. Two patients required a second treatment course of triclabendazole 20mg/kg in two divided doses due to persistence of ova in the stool. One patient who developed acute urticaria as a side effect of the drug was given three additional courses of 10mg/kg triclabendazole in combination with prednisolone and antihistamines. The pregnant woman initially received four courses of 25mg/kg praziquantel treatment for 1 week. As ova were still detected in her stool following delivery, she was subsequently treated with triclabendazole. CONCLUSIONS: One case of fascioliasis may indicate a familial outbreak. In the acute stage radiological investigations can assist in confirming the diagnosis. ELISA testing is a reliable and sensitive method for the diagnosis of fascioliasis during any stage of the disease and may also be useful during follow-up.

The present study was carried out to assess the prevalence of motile Aeromonas spp. in the faeces of clinically healthy sheep, cattle and horses and evaluate their susceptibility to some anti-microbial agents. Rectal swabs from 120 sheep, 85 cattle and 20 horses were examined for Aeromonas species using alkaline peptone water (pH 8.4) as the enrichment medium and Aeromonas Selective Agar containing 5 mg/l ampicillin as the isolation medium. Identification and antibiotic resistance of motile Aeromonas strains was performed using Gram Negative Enteric ID panel. Motile aeromonads were isolated from 12 (10%) sheep, 7 (8.2%) cattle and 1 (5%) horse. Of these 20 aeromonad isolates, 13 were A. caviae, 6 were A.sobria and 1 was A. hydrophila. Aeromonas species in the faeces of livestock might pose a public health problem for humans who are in direct contact with contaminated animals. However, further studies should be performed on aeromonads relating to their transmission between animals and humans.

Leptospirosis is a systemic infection usually producing fever with hepatorenal involvement, meningoencephalitis, and hemorrhage. In this article, we present three children between 10 and 13 years of age with leptospirosis. The purpose of this paper is to emphasize that leptospirosis is a problem in our country with farmers/cattle and that leptospirosis should be considered in certain ill children. The main symptoms were headache, fever, fatigue, abdominal pain and unconsciousness. Two patients had hepatic and renal involvement. The other had hepatic, pulmonary and probably pericardial involvement. In all children spirochetes were demonstrated in blood and urine smears by dark-field microscopy and they were also isolated from urine and blood cultures by using Flecher medium. All patients were treated with penicillin; however, one subsequently required additional antibiotics due to Klebsiella pneumoniae septicemia. While one patient was discharged in a good health, the others were taken to their home by parents without completing treatment. In conclusion, we would like to emphasize that leptospirosis is still a public health problem in our region (Eastern Turkey) in where the majority of population are farmers and raise domestic animals such as cattle in rural areas. Additionally, leptospirosis should be considered in children admitted with headache, unconsciousness, fever and abdominal pain.
