RESUMO

The increased production of polystyrene waste has led to the need to find efficient ways to dispose of it. One possibility is the use of solid waste to produce filter media by the electrospinning technique. The aim of this work was to develop an ultra-fast electrospinning process applied to recycled polystyrene, with statistical evaluation of the influence of polymeric solution parameters (polymer concentration and percentage of DL-limonene) and process variables (flow rate, voltage, and type of support) on nanoparticle collection efficiency, air permeability, and fiber diameter. An extensive characterization of the materials and evaluation of the morphology of the fibers was also carried out. It was found that recycled expanded polystyrene could be used in electrospinning to produce polymeric membranes. The optimized condition that resulted in the highest nanoparticle collection efficiency was a polymer concentration of 13.5%, percentage of DL-limonene of 50%, voltage of 25 kV, and flow rate of 1.2 mL/h, resulting in values of 99.97 ± 0.01%, 2.6 ± 0.5 × 10-13 m2, 0.19 Pa-1, and 708 ± 176 nm for the collection efficiency of nanoparticles in the range from 6.38 to 232.9 nm, permeability, quality factor, and mean fiber diameter, respectively. All the parameters were found to influence collection efficiency and fiber diameter. The use of DL-limonene, a natural solvent, provided benefits including increased collection efficiency and decreased fiber size. In addition, the electrostatic filtration mechanism was evaluated using the presence of a copper grid as a support for the nanofibers. The findings demonstrated that an electrospinning time of only 5 min was sufficient to obtain filters with high collection efficiencies and low pressure drops, opening perspectives for the application of polystyrene waste in the development of materials with excellent characteristics for application in the area of atmospheric pollution mitigation.

Atrazine is an herbicide with a high soil leaching capacity, contaminating subsurface water sources. Once the water table is contaminated, riparian species can be exposed to atrazine. In this way, understanding the impacts of this exposure must be evaluated for planning strategies that minimize the effects of this herbicide on native forest species. We aimed to evaluate forest species' sensitivity and antioxidant response to exposure to subsurface waters contaminated with atrazine, as well the dissipation this herbicide. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design, with three replications and one plant per experimental unit. The treatments were arranged in a 2 × 10 factorial. The first factor corresponded to the presence or absence (control) of the atrazine in the subsurface water. The second factor comprised 10 forest species: Amburana cearensis, Anadenanthera macrocarpa, Bauhinia cheilantha, Enterolobium contortisiliquum, Hymenaea courbaril, Libidibia ferrea, Mimosa caesalpiniifolia, Mimosa tenuiflora, Myracrodruon urundeuva, and Tabebuia aurea. The forest species studied showed different sensitivity levels to atrazine in subsurface water. A. cearensis and B. cheilantha species do not have efficient antioxidant systems to prevent severe oxidative damage. The species A. macrocarpa, E. contortisiliquum, L. ferrea, and M. caesalpiniifolia are moderately affected by atrazine. H. courbaril, M. urundeuva, and T. aurea showed greater tolerance to atrazine due to the action of the antioxidant system of these species, avoiding membrane degradation events linked to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Among the forest species, H. courbaril has the most significant remedial potential due to its greater tolerance and reduced atrazine concentrations in the soil.

The leaching of herbicides into the soil is essential to control germinating seeds and parts of vegetative weeds. However, herbicide transportation to deeper soil layers can result in groundwater contamination and, consequently, environmental issues. In this research, our objective was to investigate differences in herbicide leaching between commercial formulations and analytical standards using three different soils. Leaching experiments were carried out for diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides isolated and in binary and ternary mixtures. The herbicide residue quantification was performed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). Diuron had less mobility in soils and was retained in the most superficial layers. Hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl were more mobile and leached into deeper layers. The leaching process was more intense for hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl. The additives present in the commercial formulation favored the leaching in soils of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl herbicides isolated and mixture compared to the analytical standard. This fact highlights the importance of considering these effects for the positioning of herbicides in the field to increase the efficiency of weed control and minimize the potential for environmental contamination.

BACKGROUND: Clinical features and outcomes of patients admitted to the intensive care unit due to acute abdomen are important to be investigated. AIMS: To evaluate the outcomes of critically ill subjects with acute abdomen according to etiology, comorbidity and severity. METHODS: Outcomes of 1,523 patients (878 women, mean age 66±18 years) consecutively admitted to a specialized gastrointestinal intensive care unit with different causes of acute abdomen from January 2012 to December 2019, were retrospectively evaluated according to etiology, comorbidity and severity. RESULTS: The most common causes of acute abdomen were obstructive and inflammatory, particularly large bowel obstruction (27%), small bowel obstruction (18%) and acute pancreatitis (17%). Overall mortality was 13%. Surgery was required in 34% of patients. Median length of stay in the hospital was 9 [1-101] days. On univariate analysis mortality was significantly associated with age, APACHE II, Charlson comorbidity index, requirement for surgery and malignancy (p<0.0001), but only APACHE II, Charlson comorbidity index and surgical interventional remained significant on multivariate analysis. CONCLUSIONS: Critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit with acute abdomen constitute a heterogeneous group of subjects with different prognosis. Mortality is more related to the severity of the disease, comorbidity and need for surgery than to the etiology of the acute abdomen.

Obtaining soybean genotypes that combine better nutrient uptake, higher oil and protein levels in the grains, and high grain yield is one of the major challenges for current breeding programs. To avoid the development of unpromising populations, selecting parents for crossbreeding is a crucial step in the breeding pipeline. Therefore, our objective was to estimate the combining ability of soybean cultivars based on the F2 generation, aiming to identify superior segregating parents and populations for agronomic, nutritional and industrial traits. Field experiments were carried out in two locations in the 2020/2021 crop season. Leaf contents of the following nutrients were evaluated: phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc. Agronomic traits assessed were days to maturity (DM) and grain yield (GY), while the industrial traits protein, oil, fiber and ash contents were also measured in the populations studied. There was a significant genotype × environment (G × A) interaction for all nutritional traits, except for P content, DM and all industrial traits. The parent G3 and the segregating populations P20 and P27 can be used aiming to obtain higher nutritional efficiency in new soybean cultivars. The segregating populations P11 and P26 show higher potential for selecting soybean genotypes that combine earliness and higher grain yield. The parent G5 and segregant population P6 are promising for selection seeking improvement of industrial traits in soybean.

Therapeutic intervention to skin wounds requires covering the affected area with wound dressings. Interdisciplinary efforts have focused on the development of smart bandages that can perform multiple functions. In this direction, here, we designed a low cost (U$0.012 per cm2) multifunctional therapeutic wound dressing fabricated by loading curcumin (CC) into poly(ϵ-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers using solution blow spinning (SBS). The freestanding PCL/CC bandages were characterized by distinct physicochemical approaches and were successful in performing varied functions, including controlled release of CC, colorimetric indication of the wound conditions, barrier against microorganisms, being biocompatible, and providing a photosensitive platform for antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). The chemical nature of PCL and CC and the interactions between these components allowed CC to be released for 192 h (ca. 8 days), which could be correlated with the Korsmeyer-Peppas model, with a burst release suitable to treat the inflammatory phase. Due to the CC keto-enol tautomerism, an optical indication of the healing status could be obtained using PCL/CC, which occurred immediately, ranging between red/orange and yellow shades. The effect against pathogenic microorganisms evaluated by agar disc-diffusion, affected skin wound simulation (ex vivo), and microbial penetration tests demonstrated the ability to block and inhibit microbial permeation in different environments. The biocompatibilities of PCL and PCL/CC were verified by in vitro cytotoxicity study, which demonstrated that cell viabilities average above 94 and 96% for human dermal fibroblasts. In addition, the proposed bandage responded to aPDT applied to an in vivo assay, showing that, when irritated, PCL/CC was able to reduce the bacteria present on the real wound of mice. In summary, our findings demonstrate that using PCL and CC to produce nonwovens by the SBS technique offers potential for the rapid fabrication of biocompatible and multifunctional wound dressings, paving the way for large-scale production and utilization of such dressings in the treatment of skin wounds.

RESUMO RACIONAL: As características clínicas e os desfechos dos pacientes internados na unidade de terapia intensiva devido ao abdômen agudo são importantes serem investigados. OBJETIVOS: Avaliar os desfechos de indivíduos gravemente doentes com abdômen agudo de acordo com etiologia, gravidade e comorbidade. MÉTODOS: Os desfechos de 1.523 pacientes (878 mulheres, média de idade 66±18 anos) que foram previamente admitidos em uma unidade de terapia intensiva especializada em doenças gastrointestinais, com diferentes causas de abdômen agudo entre janeiro de 2012 e dezembro de 2019, foram avaliados retrospectivamente segundo etiologia, comorbidade e gravidade. RESULTADOS: As causas mais comuns de abdômen agudo foram obstrutivas e inflamatórias, com destaque para obstrução em colon (27%), em intestino delgado (18%) e pancreatite aguda (17%). A mortalidade geral foi de 13%. A cirurgia foi necessária em 34%. A média de permanência no hospital foi de 9 [1-101] dias. Na análise univariada a mortalidade foi significativamente associada à idade, APACHE II, índice de comorbidade de Charlson, necessidade de abordagem cirúrgica e presença de malignidade (p<0,0001), mas apenas APACHE II, índice de comorbidade de Charlson e intervenção cirúrgica permaneceram significativos na análise multivariada. CONCLUSÕES: Pacientes internados na unidade de terapia intensiva com abdômen agudo constituem um grupo heterogêneo de indivíduos com prognóstico diferente. A mortalidade está mais relacionada com a gravidade da doença, comorbidade e necessidade de cirurgia do que com a etiologia do abdome agudo.

The growing availability of scanned whole-slide images (WSIs) has allowed nephropathology to open new possibilities for medical decision-making over high-resolution images. Diagnosis of renal WSIs includes locating and identifying specific structures in the tissue. Considering the glomerulus as one of the first structures analyzed by pathologists, we propose here a novel convolutional neural network for glomerulus segmentation. Our end-to-end network, named DS-FNet, combines the strengths of semantic segmentation and semantic boundary detection networks via an attention-aware mechanism. Although we trained the proposed network on periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-stained WSIs, we found that our network was capable to segment glomeruli on WSIs stained with different techniques, such as periodic acid-methenamine silver (PAMS), hematoxylin-eosin (HE), and Masson trichrome (TRI). To assess the performance of the proposed method, we used three public data sets: HuBMAP (available in a Kaggle competition), a subset of the NEPTUNE data set, and a novel challenging data set, called WSI_Fiocruz. We compared the DS-FNet with six other deep learning networks: original U-Net, our attention version of U-Net called AU-Net, U-Net++, U-Net3Plus, ResU-Net, and DeepLabV3+. Results showed that DS-FNet achieved equivalent or superior results on all data sets: On the HuBMAP data set, it reached a dice score (DSC) of 95.05%, very close to the first place (95.15%); on the NEPTUNE and WSI_Fiocruz data sets, DS-FNet obtained the highest average DSC, whether on PAS-stained images or images stained with other techniques. To the best we know, this is the first work to show consistently high performance in a one-to-many-stain glomerulus segmentation following a thorough protocol on data sets from different medical labs.

Herbicide mixtures have often been used to control weeds in crops worldwide, but the behavior of these mixtures in the environment is still poorly understood. Laboratory and greenhouse tests have been conducted to study the interaction of the herbicides diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl which have been applied alone and in binary and ternary mixtures in the processes of sorption, desorption, half-life, and leaching in the soil. A new index of the risk of leaching of these herbicides has also been proposed. The sorption and desorption study has been carried out by the batch equilibrium method. The dissipation of the herbicides has been evaluated for 180 days to determine the half-life (t1/2). The leaching tests have been carried out on soil columns. The herbicides isolated and in mixtures have been quantified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to the mass spectrometer. Diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl in binary and ternary mixtures have less sorption capacity and greater desorption when compared to these isolated herbicides. Dissipation of diuron alone is slower, with a half-life (t1/2) = 101 days compared to mixtures (t1/2 between 44 and 66 days). For hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl, the dissipation rate is lower in mixtures (t1/2 over 26 and 16 days), with a more pronounced effect in mixtures with the presence of diuron (t1/2 = 47 and 56 and 17 and 22 days). The binary and ternary mixtures of diuron, hexazinone, and sulfometuron-methyl promoted more significant transport in depth (with the three herbicides quantified to depth P4, P7, and P7, respectively) compared to the application of these isolated herbicides (quantified to depth P2, P4, and P5). Considering the herbicides' desorption and solubility, the new index proposed to estimate the leaching potential allowed a more rigorous assessment concerning the risk of leaching these pesticides, with hexazinone and sulfometuron-methyl presenting a higher risk of contamination of groundwater.

Introduction: Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II and III and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) are prognostic scores commonly used in the intensive care unit (ICU). Their accuracy in predicting mortality has not been adequately evaluated in comparison to prognostic scores commonly used in critically ill cirrhotic patients with acute decompensation (AD) or acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). Aims: This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of prognostic scores, including APACHE II, SOFA, Chronic Liver Failure Consortium (CLIF-C) SOFA, Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CPS), Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD), MELD-Na, MELD to serum sodium ratio (MESO) index, CLIF-C organ failure (CLIF-C OF), CLIF-C ACLF, and CLIF-C AD scores, in predicting mortality of cirrhotic patients admitted to the ICU. Patients and Methods. A total of 382 patients (280 males, mean age 67.3 ± 10.6 years) with cirrhosis were retrospectively evaluated. All prognostic scores were calculated in the first 24 hours of ICU admission. Their ability to predict mortality was measured using the analysis of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: Mortality was observed in 31% of the patients. Analysis of AUC revealed that CLIF-C OF (0.807) and CLIF-SOFA (0.776) had the best ability to predict mortality in all patients, but CLIF-C OF (0.749) had higher prognostic accuracy in patients with ACLF. CLIF-SOFA, SOFA, and CLIF-C AD had the highest AUC values in patients with AD, with no statistical difference (p=0.971). Conclusions: When compared to other general or liver-specific prognostic scores, CLIF-C OF, CLIF-SOFA, SOFA, and CLIF-C AD have good accuracy to predict mortality in critically ill patients with cirrhosis and patients with AD. According to the clinical scenario, different scores should be used to provide prognosis to patients with cirrhosis in the ICU.

The speed of the sorption reaction alters the bioavailability of herbicides in the soil and, consequently, the transport and transformation processes of the molecule in the environment. In this research, the sorption kinetics of sulfometuron-methyl was evaluated in different Brazilian soils in which sugarcane is grown. The sorption speed was carried out by the batch equilibrium method. The amount of sulfometuron-methyl adsorbed and remaining in the soil solution was used to build kinetic models in fifteen soils. Pearson's correlation coefficients were determined between maximum sorption capacity and soil properties. The pseudo-second-order model presented the best fit to report the sorption kinetics of sulfometuron-methyl in soils. The sorption equilibrium time varied between 69.1 and 524.7 min. The properties of cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil hydrogenionic potential (pH), and total organic carbon (TOC) affected the sorption kinetics of sulfometuron-methyl. The pH showed a negative correlation with the maximum adsorption capacity at equilibrium, while TOC and CEC positively correlated with the maximum adsorption. The results demonstrate that the sorption speed of sulfometuron-methyl varies between soils; this must be considered when defining the rate of use of the herbicide for weed control, minimizing the risk of environmental contamination.

Pre-emergent herbicides have been developed for their long residual effect; however, they can make sensitive successor cultures unfeasible. Waste remediation techniques are needed for sustainable agricultural systems; for this, the edaphoclimatic asymmetries in the country must be considered. This study aimed to evaluate the remedial capacity of the herbicide diclosulam by covering crops under different edaphoclimatic conditions. Treatments were arranged in an n × 2 factorial scheme, the first factor being the number of plant species in each location and the second being the presence or absence of diclosulam in the soil. The physiological and growth characteristics of 15 potential phytoremediation species were evaluated. Herbicide residues in the environment were positively correlated with the soil pH; organic matter, aluminum, and silt contents; and aluminum saturation. The effectiveness of phytoremediation varied between species and between regions. Plant species suitable for efficient phytoremidation systems of diclosulam residues were Canavalia ensiformis for Couto Magalhães de Minas, Cajanus cajan and Canavalia ensiformis for Diamantina, Raphanus sativus for Erechim and Cajanus cajan for São João Evangelista.

Data charts are widely used in our daily lives, being present in regular media, such as newspapers, magazines, web pages, books, and many others. In general, a well-constructed data chart leads to an intuitive understanding of its underlying data. In the same way, when data charts have wrong design choices, a redesign of these representations might be needed. However, in most cases, these charts are shown as a static image, which means that the original data are not usually available. Therefore, automatic methods could be applied to extract the underlying data from the chart images to allow these changes. The task of recognizing charts and extracting data from them is complex, largely due to the variety of chart types and their visual characteristics. Other features in real-world images that can make this task difficult are photo distortions, noise, alignment, etc. Two computer vision techniques that can assist this task and have been little explored in this context are perspective detection and correction. These methods transform a distorted and noisy chart in a clear chart, with its type ready for data extraction or other uses. This paper proposes a classification, detection, and perspective correction process that is suitable for real-world usage, when considering the data used for training a state-of-the-art model for the extraction of a chart in real-world photography. The results showed that, with slight changes, chart recognition methods are now ready for real-world charts, when taking time and accuracy into consideration.

Glomeruli are histological structures of the kidney cortex formed by interwoven blood capillaries, and are responsible for blood filtration. Glomerular lesions impair kidney filtration capability, leading to protein loss and metabolic waste retention. An example of lesion is the glomerular hypercellularity, which is characterized by an increase in the number of cell nuclei in different areas of the glomeruli. Glomerular hypercellularity is a frequent lesion present in different kidney diseases. Automatic detection of glomerular hypercellularity would accelerate the screening of scanned histological slides for the lesion, enhancing clinical diagnosis. Having this in mind, we propose a new approach for classification of hypercellularity in human kidney images. Our proposed method introduces a novel architecture of a convolutional neural network (CNN) along with a support vector machine, achieving near perfect average results on FIOCRUZ data set in a binary classification (lesion or normal). Additionally, classification of hypercellularity sub-lesions was also evaluated, considering mesangial, endocapilar and both lesions, reaching an average accuracy of 82%. Either in binary task or in the multi-classification one, our proposed method outperformed Xception, ResNet50 and InceptionV3 networks, as well as a traditional handcrafted-based method. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on deep learning over a data set of glomerular hypercellularity images of human kidney.

Core-sheath nanofibers were successfully prepared via coaxial electrospinning by using chitosan with well-defined structural characteristics as the shell layer and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) containing tetracycline hydrochloride (TH) as the core layer. The effects of the average degree of deacetylation (DD‾) of chitosan and the post-electrospinning genipin crosslinking on physicochemical and biological properties of resulting nonwovens were evaluated. Defect-free and geometrically uniform nanofibers with diameters predominantly in the range of 100-300 nm were prepared, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the core-sheath structures and its preservation after crosslinking. The mechanical properties, as well as the stability of nonwovens in aqueous medium, were greatly improved by genipin-crosslinking, which enabled a sustained release of TH over 14 days. Results also revealed that the release profile of TH in the presence of lysozyme was affected by the composition of the shell layer, as the TH release rate increases with decreasing of DD‾. Further in vitro antimicrobial activity demonstrated that the cross-linked nonwovens containing TH showed strong activity against bacterial strains associated with periodontal disease. Additionally, the nonwovens did not demonstrate cytotoxic toward fibroblast (HDFn) cells, hence showing their potential for applications as a novel drug delivery platform for periodontitis treatment.

This study aimed to evaluate soil biomass and microbial activity and soybean yield under different limestone and gypsum doses and different cover crops. The experiment was carried out in the experimental area of the Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa Agropecuária de Chapadão, on a Dystrophic Red Latosol, using cultivar Desafio. The experiment consisted of a randomized blocks design, in a split-plot factorial scheme (3x4x3), with three replications. Plots consisted of three gypsum doses: control (without gypsum), recommended dose (2.3 Mg ha-1), and double dose (4.6 Mg ha-1). Subplots consisted of four limestone doses (2, 4, and 6 Mg ha-1) and the control (without limestone). Each block had three different cover crops: Brachiaria, Millet, and allow. The values obtained with the test revealed that brachiaria had better basal respiration in the absence of gypsum. Conversely, millet had better basal respiration in with the gypsum dose. Basal respiration, using brachiaria as cover crop, was higher at the dose of 2700 kg ha-1 of limestone. However, for the fallow and the millet, basal respiration was higher when using the highest limestone dose of 6000 kg ha-1. The variable microbial biomass showed differences between cover crops only in the absence of gypsum. Brachiaria and fallow presented the highest mean for microbial biomass. The use of millet as a cover crop together with gypsum doses increased the microbial biomass. The variables mass of 100 grains and grain yield had higher mean at the limestone dose of 6000 kg ha-1 .


O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a biomassa e atividade microbiana do solo, e produtividade da soja sob efeito das diferentes doses de calcário e gesso e diferentes coberturas de solo. O experimento foi conduzido na área experimental da Fundação de Apoio a Pesquisa Agropecuária de Chapadão, sob Latossolo Vermelho Distrófico, com a cultivar Desafio. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, em esquema fatorial (3x4x3) de parcelas subdividas, com 3 repetições. As parcelas foram constituídas por 3 quantidades de gesso agrícola, sendo: controle (sem gesso), recomendado (2,3 Mg ha-1) e o dobro (4,6 Mg ha-1), as subparcelas por 4 doses de calcário (2, 4 e 6 Mg ha-1), além do controle (sem calcário), onde cada bloco apresentou 3 coberturas diferentes: Braquiaria, Milheto e Pousio. Os resultados foram submetidos ao teste de Tukey 5%. Com os valores obtidos pudemos observar que a respiração basal foi melhor para braquiária na ausência de gesso, e na presença o milheto se saiu melhor. A respiração basal, utilizando a braquiária como cobertura, foi maior na dose de 2700 kg ha-1 de calcário. Já utilizando o pousio e o milheto foi na maior dose 6000 kg ha-1. A variável biomassa microbiana apresentou diferença entre as coberturas apenas na ausência de gesso, onde a braquiária e o pousio apresentaram as maiores médias para esta variável. A utilização do milheto como cobertura em conjunto com as doses de gesso acarretou aumento da biomassa microbiana. A massa de 100 grãos e a produtividade de grãos apresentaram maior média na dose de 6000 kg ha-1 de calcário.

Knowledge of factors related to the dynamics of herbicides in the environment is of fundamental importance to predicting the behavior of herbicides in soils with different attributes, to select appropriate dosages, as well as to avoid harmful effects on the environment and subsequent crops. The objective of this work was to evaluate the sorption and desorption of ametryn in seven soils with different attributes. Initially, the equilibrium time was determined by the "Batch Equilibrium". Then, it was performed the sorption test with different concentrations (0.5; 1; 2; 4; 8; 16; 24 and 32 mg L-1) of ametryn in 0.01 mol L-1CaCl2. 10 mL of these solutions were added to samples of 2.00 g of each soil, remaining under rotary shaking for 4 hours. After centrifugation and filtration, the ametryn concentration in the supernatant was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. Desorption was evaluated using the tubes containing 16 mg L-1 prior to sorption testing. The results indicated that the sorption and desorption of ametryn depend on the physicochemical attributes of the soil. Sorption was higher in soils with high organic matter content and high ion exchange capacity, while desorption was inversely proportional to sorption.


O conhecimento dos fatores relacionados à dinâmica de herbicidas no ambiente é de fundamental importância para prever o comportamento de herbicidas em solos com diferentes atributos e para seleção de dosagens adequadas, bem como para evitar efeitos prejudiciais ao ambiente e às culturas subsequentes. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar a sorção e dessorção do ametryn em sete solos com diferentes atributos. Inicialmente, foi determinado o tempo de equilíbrio pelo método "Batch Equilibrium". Em seguida foi realizado o ensaio de sorção com diferentes concentrações (0,5; 1; 2; 4; 8; 16; 24 e 32 mg L-1) de ametryn em CaCl2 0,01 mol L-1. Foram adicionadas 10 mL destas soluções a amostras de 2,00 g de cada solo, permanecendo sob agitação rotatória por 4 horas. Após centrifugação e filtração, a concentração do ametryn no sobrenadante foi determinada por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência. A dessorção foi avaliada utilizando os tubos que continham 16 mg L-1 antes do ensaio de sorção. Os resultados indicaram que a sorção e a dessorção do ametryn depende dos atributos físico-químicos do solo. A sorção foi maior em solos com alto teor matéria orgânica e alta capacidade de troca iônica, enquanto que a dessorção foi inversamente proporcional à sorção.

Weed control efficiency and the environmental contamination potential of herbicides depend on soil sorption and desorption. Among the indexes that evaluate the soil adsorption processes, the coefficients sorption (Kfs) and desorption (Kfd) obtained by Freundlich isotherms can provide accurate information about the behavior of an herbicide in the soil. The values of Kfs and Kfd of an herbicide vary according to the physicochemical characteristics of the soil, so it is possible to estimate these coefficients with high precision if good predictive mathematical models are constructed. Therefore, our objective aimed to evaluate the use of multiple regression models (MLR) associated with multivariate techniques to estimate the coefficient Kfs and Kfd for the hexazinone based on the chemical and physical attributes of soils. The correlation analyses, principal components, and clustering analysis allowed the multiple linear regression technique to generate models with higher adjustment coefficient (R2) for Kfs (0.73 to 0.99) and Kfd (0.94 to 0.99), and lower root mean squared error (RMSE) for Kfs (0.003 to 0.065) and Kfd (0.018 to 0.120). Regression models created from groups of soils showed greater prediction performance for Kfs and Kfd. The organic matter followed by the cation exchange capacity was the most important attributes of soils in sorption and desorption processes of hexazinone.

Sorption and desorption determine the amount of an herbicide in soil solution. Therefore, knowledge of the sorption and desorption coefficients in different soils is an essential factor to estimate the potential for environmental contamination by herbicides. We evaluated the feasibility of multivariate and linear discriminant analyses to predict the sorption and desorption capacity of a soil for diuron, one of the most used herbicides on sugarcane plantations. The adsorptive capacity in twenty-seven Brazilian soil samples was estimated using the sorption constant (Kfs) and desorption constant (Kfd) obtained by the Freundlich isotherms. The regression model was created from the sorbed and nonsorbed concentrations of diuron in soils. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography was applied to quantify the diuron concentrations. The multivariate analysis separated the soils into four groups considering the similarity of the following attributes: pH, organic matter, clay, and base saturation. The groups showed a similar pattern of sorption and desorption for diuron: Lom-Lclay: low sorption (5.9 ± 1.2) and high desorption (10.9 ± 0.6); Lclay: low sorption (7.5 ± 1.1) and high desorption (11.4 ± 1.3); Hom-Hclay: high sorption (11.2 ± 1.2) and low desorption (13.8 ± 1.2); HpH-Hclay: high sorption (10.1 ± 1.1) and medium desorption (11.5 ± 1.4). Linear discriminant analysis of these soil attributes was used to classify other soils described in the literature with adsorption capacity. This analysis was able to identify soils with high and low sorption using the pH, organic matter, clay, and base saturation, demonstrating the enormous potential of the technique to group soils with different contamination risks for subterranean waters. Sugarcane crops in northeastern Brazil showed a higher pollution risk through the leaching of diuron. Multivariate analysis revealed significant diuron-related changes in the soil composition of different Brazilian regions; therefore, this statistical analysis can be used to improve understanding of herbicide behavior in soils.
