RESUMO

Hippocampal neurogenesis has been implicated in the etiology of depression. Recent studies suggest new neurons add flexibility to hippocampal-dependent learning and memory. We hypothesized that suppressed hippocampal neurogenesis may contribute to impaired cognitive flexibility associated with depression. The chronic corticosterone (CORT)-induced animal model of depression was used. In Experiment 1, rats received either CORT (40mg/kg) or vehicle injections for 21days and were subjected to Water maze during the last six days of drug treatment. No group differences were found during the spatial learning phase; however, cognitive flexibility, measured by reversal training, was significantly impaired in the CORT-treated rats. The probe test revealed enhanced memory of the new platform location for the CORT-treated rats. Given the time newborn neurons require to mature, we presumed if impaired cognitive flexibility seen in Experiment 1 were due to suppressed neurogenesis, terminating CORT treatment 3days prior to behavioural testing should still induce the impairment. Therefore, Experiment 2 was similar to Experiment 1, except that CORT injections were terminated 3days prior to behavioural assessment. However, not only was spatial learning significantly enhanced in the CORT-treated rats, but there were also no group differences during reversal or probe tests. Bromodeoxyruidine, administered a day after the first drug treatments in both experiments, was quantified and revealed the number of new neurons were the same in both groups in both experiments. Results suggest cognitive flexibility is impaired in the CORT-induced animal model of depression; an effect that is reversible and independent of suppressed hippocampal neurogenesis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The use of hip arthroscopy to address injuries and conditions about the hip is becoming more widespread. There are several narrative reviews regarding complications of hip arthroscopy but a systematic review is currently lacking. The primary goal of this study is to determine the complication rate associated with hip arthroscopy in the literature. METHODS: A search of the EMBASE and Ovid Medline databases was performed to identify articles published between 1 January 2000 and 25 November 2011 that reported a complication rate after hip arthroscopy. Appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to identify articles, and a meta-analysis was performed to determine an overall complication rate. Complications were divided into major and minor. RESULTS: A total of 66 papers (n = 6,962 hip arthroscopies) were identified and deemed appropriate for analysis. The overall complication rate was found to be 4.0 % (95 % CI 2.9-5.2 %). Of the 287 complications identified in the literature, 20 were deemed major constituting a rate of 0.3 %. CONCLUSIONS: Hip arthroscopy appears to be safe. The vast majority of complications are minor in nature. Prospective trials looking at the complications of hip arthroscopy would aid in identifying prognostic factors. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Systematic review and meta-analysis, Level III.

RESUMO

We report preliminary results from studies of biological effects induced by non-thermal levels of non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation. Exponentially growing Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast cells grown on dry media were exposed to electromagnetic fields in the 200-350 GHz frequency range at low power density to observe possible non-thermal effects on the microcolony growth. Exposure to the electromagnetic field was conducted over 2.5 h. The data from exposure and control experiments were grouped into either large-, medium- or small-sized microcolonies to assist in the accurate assessment of growth. The three groups showed significant differences in growth between exposed and control microcolonies. A statistically significant enhanced growth rate was observed at 341 GHz. Growth rate was assessed every 30 min via time-lapse photography. Possible interaction mechanisms are discussed, taking into account Frohlich's hypothesis.

RESUMO

Immature teratoma of the ovary is a rare tumour (1% of cancer of the ovary) usually seen in adolescents or young women. It is a malignant tumour derived from an abnormal germ-cell which undergoes meiotic division. The diagnosis is based on the pathological examination which reveals immature tissue derived from two or three types of embryonic tissue (endo-, meso- and ectoderm). Intraperitoneal dissemination occurs and immature or mature recurrence is observed. The prognosis was particularly severe before the use of polychemotherapy which has also made conservative surgery possible. At the present time, the consensus is to reduce the duration of the chemotherapy with a regular clinical and laboratory (tumour markers, aFP) monitory. A second look laparotomy verifies successful treatment.

RESUMO

Collagenous colitis with intestinal protein loss was discovered in a sixty-six year-old female who presented with recurrent and prolonged diarrhea associated with hypoprotidemia, hypoalbuminemia, and increased clearance of alpha-1-antitrypsin. Histologic lesions of collagenous colitis were found during each episode of diarrhea. Biological and histological examinations were normal during the remission phases. Intestinal protein loss appeared to be due to collagenous colitis because of the parallel course of the clinical, biological and histological signs, and because no other cause had been discovered. The possibility of protein exudation, probably secondary to the extent of the epithelial detachment, could be an additional argument for the inflammatory etiology of collagenous colitis.

RESUMO

Whipple's disease and pulmonary and lymph node tuberculosis have been diagnosed in a 70 year-old man hospitalized for weight loss and fever. The tuberculous or Whipple's disease-related nature of associated non-necrotizing epithelioid hepatic granulomas could not be determined. The existence of cellular immune defects in Whipple's disease could explain the association with tuberculosis, which has not been previously reported in the literature.

RESUMO

Genetic markers consisting of 11 blood group and red cell enzyme systems were investigated in 14 endogamous groups of north-west India. Genetic differentiation among the samples as indicated by FST is appreciable, reflecting the ethnic diversity characteristic of this region. Local variation within each state is lower, indicating a geographical component to the total variation. This variation is refined by calculations of genetic distances, which show that the tribals and low-caste groups are closer together but well separated from high-caste Brahmins and other non-tribal middle castes. There is a slight possibility of disruptive selection, but the analyses suggest that the differences in genetic structure in north-west India are more likely to be due to their breeding structure, differential migration and ethnic affiliation.
