RESUMO

More than 410 kinds of prescriptions of medicines were presented, some of which were collected in Shennong Bencao Jing(, Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica) and other herbal works, are included in Lu Zhiyi's Bencao Chengya Banji(). He introduced the indications of these medicines by focusing on the name of the herbs, or the species of them, and the features and growth morphology of the herbs. He abstracted the efficacy of drugs on the human body. Therefore, he noted the indications of all the medicines list in the book.

RESUMO

AIM: To examine the inhibition effects of rhizosphere fungal strain MF-91 on the rice blast pathogen Magnaporthe grisea and sheath blight pathogen Rhizoctonia solani. METHODS AND RESULTS: Rhizosphere fungal strain MF-91 and its metabolites suppressed the in vitro mycelial growth of R. solani. The inhibitory effect of the metabolites was affected by incubation temperature, lighting time, initial pH and incubation time of rhizosphere fungal strain MF-91. The in vitro mycelial growth of M. grisea was insignificantly inhibited by rhizosphere fungal strain MF-91 and its metabolites. The metabolites of rhizosphere fungal strain MF-91 significantly inhibited the conidial germination and appressorium formation of M. grisea. Moreover, the metabolites reduced the disease index of rice sheath blight by 35·02% in a greenhouse and 57·81% in a field as well as reduced the disease index of rice blast by 66·07% in a field. Rhizosphere fungal strain MF-91 was identified as Chaetomium aureum based on the morphological observation, the analysis of 18S ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer sequence and its physiological characteristics, such as the optimal medium, temperature and initial pH for mycelial growth and sporulation production. CONCLUSIONS: Rhizosphere fungus C. aureum is effective in the biocontrolling of rice blast pathogen M. grisea and sheath blight pathogen R. solani both in in vitro and in vivo conditions. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study is the first to show that rhizosphere fungus C. aureum is a potential fungicide against rice blast and sheath blight pathogens.

RESUMO

An imaging protocol with a multi-slice CT scanner that allows comprehensive assessment of patients with haematuria is described. This protocol allows evaluation of the kidneys, ureters and bladder in a single examination using CT. This approach should streamline the diagnostic work-up of patients with haematuria.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical parameters that are associated with the development of brain edema of hypertensive encephalopathy in patients with preeclampsia-eclampsia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with preeclampsia-eclampsia and neurologic symptoms underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Clinical parameters recorded at the time of MR imaging included serum electrolytes and various indices of hematologic, renal, and hepatic function. Several data were available 1 week prior to the development of neurologic symptoms in 11 patients. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to study possible associations between these parameters and brain edema at MR imaging. RESULTS: The 20 patients with brain edema at MR imaging had a significantly greater incidence of abnormal red blood cell morphology (14 [82%] of 17 patients vs two [25%] of eight, P: <.005) and higher levels of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) (339 U/L +/- 65 [SD] vs 258 U/L +/- 65, P: =.007) than the eight with normal MR imaging findings; multivariate logistic regression analysis showed a strong association with red blood cell morphology only. Moreover, LDH levels were elevated before the development of neurologic abnormalities (P: <.05). Blood pressures were not significantly different between groups at any time. CONCLUSION: Brain edema at MR imaging in patients with preeclampsia-eclampsia was associated with abnormalities in endothelial damage markers and not with hypertension level.

RESUMO

Chemical synthesis was used to prepare the HIV-1 protease specifically 13C-labelled in the catalytically essential Asp 25 in each monomer. The NMR chemical shift of the 13C-enriched homodimeric enzyme was measured in the presence of the inhibitor pepstatin, a mimic of the tetrahedral intermediate formed in enzyme catalysis. In this complex, the catalytic carboxyls do not titrate in the pH range where the enzyme is active; throughout the range pH 2.5-6.5, one Asp 25 side chain is protonated and the other deprotonated. By contrast, in the absence of inhibitor the two Asp side chains are chemically equivalent and both deprotonated at pH6, the optimum for enzymatic activity. These direct observations of the chemical properties of the catalytic apparatus of the enzyme provide concrete information on which to base the design of improved HIV-1 protease inhibitors.
