RESUMO

We report a patient who developed frosted branch angiitis (FBA) and was diagnosed 1 month after the penetrating eye injury (PEI) repair. A 31-year-old male with no systemic comorbidities presented with defective vision following trauma to his left eye while cutting wood. His best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/200. Anterior segment examinations showed a zone I full-thickness corneal tear with iris tissue incarceration. There was no clinical evidence of intraocular foreign body (IOFB) or endophthalmitis. He underwent PEI repair with iris abscission on the same day with intracameral moxifloxacin injection. His BCVA on postoperative day 45 was 20/200. Examination showed a resolving vitreous hemorrhage, venous tortuosity, and retinal perivascular infiltration affecting the venules from the posterior pole up to the periphery. He was treated with oral and topical steroids. The clinical signs resolved completely and BCVA improved to 20/20 after 1 month of treatment. FBA can complicate the recovery of eyes after PEI repair, even in the absence of endophthalmitis or sympathetic ophthalmia. A thorough search for IOFB or its tell-tale signs should be done in such eyes.

PURPOSE: To evaluate retinal functional changes after idiopathic macular hole (MH) surgery using heavy brilliant blue G (hBBG) dye for internal limiting membrane (ILM) staining. METHODS: Forty-four eyes with idiopathic MH were randomized into two groups - 24 eyes undergoing vitrectomy with ILM peeling using hBBG staining and 20 eyes without staining; anatomical and functional status (with microperimetry (MP)) at baseline and during postoperative follow-up were noted and compared. RESULTS: All eyes had closure of MH postoperatively and overall baseline MP indices (average threshold, AT; foveal sensitivity, FS) improved significantly at 6 weeks and 6 months of follow-up. AT and FS showed significant improvement at 6 weeks and 6 months from baseline in both individual groups (P < 0.001). Intergroup comparison showed that there was no statistically significant difference in AT and FS values at any point of time (baseline, 6 weeks, 6 months) between staining and no-stain group. No eyes in our cohort had any unexplained visual loss. CONCLUSION: Functional parameters of macula improved significantly after successful MH surgery using hBBG for staining the ILM.

PURPOSE: To study the outcomes of subthreshold micropulse yellow laser (SML) and eplerenone (EP) therapy in central serous chorio-retinopathy (cCSCR). METHODS: Retrospective study of 28 eyes of 27 patients undergoing SML and 20 eyes of 19 patients undergoing EP therapy. RESULTS: Median duration of follow-up was 8 months for SML and 4.5 months for EP group. Complete SRF resolution was seen in 12/28 (42.8%) eyes in SML and 4/20 (20%) in EP group. Six eyes in SML group and two eyes in EP group needed additional SML. No EP patients demonstrated hyperkalemia warranting stopping of therapy. Baseline visual acuity (VA) was correlated positively with final VA in both groups. Presence/absence of focal leaks had differing outcomes in both treatment groups in terms of anatomical resolution. CONCLUSION: Both treatment modalities were effective in the management of cCSCR showing comparable favorable anatomical outcomes, but visual outcomes were not significant, probably due to chronicity of the pathology.

Hexavalent chromium is more toxic and carcinogenic compared to its trivalent counterpart. Hexavalent chromium can be photocatalytically reduced to trivalent one using zinc oxide semiconductor and solar or UV radiation as light source. But an important ecological aspect is whether the net toxicity decreases after the photocatalytic process. In the present work, we have selected Anabaena flos-aquae as the model organism and examined whether the net toxicity to which it has been exposed in water decreases after photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium using ZnO semiconductor as photocatalyst. We have studied the cumulative toxicities of both chromium (before and after treatment) and ZnO (both nano and micro) separately and as a suspension of ZnO in chromium. Quantitative cell surface roughness analysis was conducted using AFM to confirm the changes in cell surface properties.
