Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is widely utilized in bacterial analyses, with the dominant SERS peaks attributed to purine metabolites released during sample preparation. Although adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and nucleic acids are potential molecular origins of these metabolites, research on their exact contributions remains limited. This study explored purine metabolite release from E. coli and RNA integrity following various sample preparation methods. Standard water washing generated dominant SERS signals within 10 s, a duration shorter than the anticipated RNA half-lives under starvation. Evaluating RNA integrity indicated that the most abundant ribosomal RNA species remained intact for hours post-washing, whereas messenger RNA and transfer RNA species degraded gradually. This suggests that bacterial SERS signatures observed after the typical washing step could originate from only a small fraction of endogenous purine-containing molecules. In contrast, acid depurination led to degradation of most RNA species, releasing about 40 times more purine derivatives than water washing. Mild heating also instigated the RNA degradation and released more purine derivatives than water washing. Notably, differences were also evident in the dominant SERS signals following these treatments. This work provides insights into SERS-based studies of purine metabolites released by bacteria and future development of methodologies.

Background: In bronchiectasis, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) lung disease (NTM-LD) is a well-known coexisting infection. However, microorganism coisolates and clinical NTM-LD predictors are poorly studied. Methods: Patients with bronchiectasis diagnosed by means of computed tomography between January 2017 and June 2020 were screened, using the date of computed tomography as the index date. Those with a major bronchiectasis diagnosis in ≥2 follow-up visits after the index date were enrolled in the study, and NTM-LD occurrence and its association with pneumonia and hospitalization within 1 year were analyzed. Results: Of the 2717 participants, 79 (2.9%) had NTM-LD diagnosed. The factors associated with NTM-LD included hemoptysis, postinfectious bronchiectasis, a tree-in-bud score ≥2, a modified Reiff score ≥4, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (adjusted odds ratios, 1.80, 2.36, 1.78, 2.95, and 0.51, respectively). Compared with patients in the non-NTM group, those with NTM-LD had higher rates of hospitalization (15.9% vs 32.9%; P < .001) and pneumonia (9.8% vs 20.3%; P = .003). Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the most common microorganism in those with NTM-LD and those in the non-NTM group (10.1% vs 7.8%; P = .40). However, compared with those in the non-NTM group, Acinetobacter baumannii and Escherichia coli were more prevalent in patients with NTM-LD (0.7% vs 3.8% [P = .03%] and 1.0% vs 3.8% [P = .05], respectively). Conclusions: Postinfectious bronchiectasis with hemoptysis, higher radiological involvement, and a tree-in-bud pattern were associated with NTM-LD risk. The rate of A baumannii and E coli coisolation was higher in bronchiectasis populations with NTM-LD.

INTRODUCTION: Limited data exist regarding outcomes when pre- and periviable PPROM (PPROM ≤26 weeks of gestation) occurs as a complication of fetoscopic laser surgery (FLS) for twin-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of FLS cases performed at a single institution between January 2015 and May 2021. Study inclusion was limited to patients with monochorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancies complicated by TTTS who underwent FLS. Patients were grouped by pPPROM status, and further stratified to those continuing with expectant management, and outcomes were compared between groups. The primary outcome was survival to live birth of at least one twin. RESULTS: During the study period, 171 patients underwent FLS and a total of 96 (56.1%) subjects satisfied inclusion criteria. Among included subjects, 18 (18.8%) experienced pPPROM after FLS and 78 (81.2%) did not. Baseline characteristics were similar between groups. Among patients with pPPROM, 11 (61.1%) pursued expectant management and 7 (38.9%) opted for pregnancy termination. Among expectantly managed subjects, median pPPROM-to-delivery interval was 47.0 days (6.0-66.0 IQR) with a median gestational age at delivery of 29+1 weeks (24 + 4-33 + 6 IQR). Rates of survival to live birth of at least one twin (90.9% vs. 96.2% p = 0.42) were similar between those with pPPROM undergoing expectant management and those without pPPROM. Dual survivorship (45.5% vs. 78.2%, p = 0.03), perinatal survival to live birth (68.2% vs. 87.2%, p = 0.05), and perinatal survival to newborn hospital discharge (59.1% vs. 85.9%, p = <0.01) were all significantly lower among those with pPPROM. Gestational age at delivery was lower among those continuing with pregnancies complicated by pPPROM (29 + 1 vs. 32+5 weeks, p = <0.01). CONCLUSION: Survival of at least one twin to live birth remained high among those pursing expectant management after experiencing post-FLS pPPROM, suggesting that the outlook after this complication is not necessarily poor. However, this complication was associated with lower chances of dual survival and greater prematurity.

The coordinated biomechanical performance, such as uterine stretch and cervical barrier function, within maternal reproductive tissues facilitates healthy human pregnancy and birth. Quantifying normal biomechanical function and detecting potentially detrimental biomechanical dysfunction (e.g., cervical insufficiency, uterine overdistention, premature rupture of membranes) is difficult, largely due to minimal data on the shape and size of maternal anatomy and material properties of tissue across gestation. This study quantitates key structural features of human pregnancy to fill this knowledge gap and facilitate three-dimensional modeling for biomechanical pregnancy simulations to deeply explore pregnancy and childbirth. These measurements include the longitudinal assessment of uterine and cervical dimensions, fetal weight, and cervical stiffness in 47 low-risk pregnancies at four time points during gestation (late first, middle second, late second, and middle third trimesters). The uterine and cervical size were measured via 2-dimensional ultrasound, and cervical stiffness was measured via cervical aspiration. Trends in uterine and cervical measurements were assessed as time-course slopes across pregnancy and between gestational time points, accounting for specific participants. Patient-specific computational solid models of the uterus and cervix, generated from the ultrasonic measurements, were used to estimate deformed uterocervical volume. Results show that for this low-risk cohort, the uterus grows fastest in the inferior-superior direction from the late first to middle second trimester and fastest in the anterior-posterior and left-right direction between the middle and late second trimester. Contemporaneously, the cervix softens and shortens. It softens fastest from the late first to the middle second trimester and shortens fastest between the late second and middle third trimester. Alongside the fetal weight estimated from ultrasonic measurements, this work presents holistic maternal and fetal patient-specific biomechanical measurements across gestation.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal head and neck masses can result in critical airway obstruction. Our study aimed to evaluate prenatal factors associated with the decision for a definitive airway, including ex-utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT), at birth among at-risk fetuses. METHODS: A single-institution retrospective review evaluated all fetal head and neck masses prenatally diagnosed from 2005 to 2023. The primary outcome was the decision for a definitive airway at birth, including intubation, tracheostomy, or EXIT. RESULTS: Thirty four patients were included, with 23 deliveries occurring at our institution. 8/23 (35%) patients received a definitive airway at birth, six underwent an EXIT procedure, and two required intubation only. Patients who received a definitive airway had higher rates of polyhydramnios (50% vs. 7%, p = 0.03), tracheal narrowing on ultrasound (US) (50% vs. 0%, p = 0.01), tracheal displacement on US (63% vs. 0%, p < 0.01), abnormal fetal breathing on US (50% vs. 0%, p = 0.01), tracheal narrowing or displacement on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) (75% vs. 7%, p < 0.01), and larger mass maximum diameter (7.9 vs. 4.3 cm, p = 0.02). In our series, 100% of patients with polyhydramnios, tracheal narrowing or displacement on either US or MRI, and abnormal fetal breathing on US received a definitive airway at birth. CONCLUSION: Prenatal findings of tracheal narrowing or displacement, polyhydramnios, and abnormal fetal breathing are strongly associated with the decision for a definitive airway at birth and warrant mobilization of appropriate resources.

BACKGROUND: Our study aimed to confirm a simplified radiological scoring system, derived from a modified Reiff score, to evaluate its relationship with clinical symptoms and predictive outcomes in Taiwanese patients with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis (NCFB). METHODS: This extensive multicenter retrospective study, performed in Taiwan, concentrated on patients diagnosed with NCFB verified through high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans. We not only compared the clinical features of various types of bronchiectasis (cylindrical, varicose, and cystic). Furthermore, we established relationships between the severity of clinical factors, including symptom scores, pulmonary function, pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization, exacerbation and admission rates, and HRCT parameters using modified Reiff scores. RESULTS: Data from 2,753 patients were classified based on HRCT patterns (cylindrical, varicose, and cystic) and severity, assessed by modified Reiff scores (mild, moderate, and severe). With increasing HRCT severity, a significant correlation was found with decreased forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) (p < 0.001), heightened clinical symptoms (p < 0.001), elevated pathogen colonization (pseudomonas aeruginosa) (p < 0.001), and an increased annual hospitalization rate (p < 0.001). In the following multivariate analysis, elderly age, pseudomonas aeruginosa pneumonia, and hospitalizations per year emerged as the only independent predictors of mortality. CONCLUSION: Based on our large cohort study, the simplified CT scoring system (Reiff score) can serve as a useful adjunct to clinical factors in predicting disease severity and prognosis among Taiwanese patients with NCFB.

Birthing mechanics are poorly understood, though many injuries during childbirth are mechanical, like fetal and maternal tissue damage. Several biomechanical simulation models of parturition have been proposed to investigate birth, but many do not include the uterus. Additionally, most solid models rely on segmenting anatomical structures from clinical images to generate patient geometry, which can be time-consuming. This work presents two new parametric solid modeling methods for generating patient-specific, at-term uterine three-dimensional geometry. Building from an established method of modeling the sagittal uterine shape, this work improves the uterine coronal shape, especially where the fetal head joins the lower uterine wall. Solid models of the uterus and cervix were built from five at-term patients' magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sets. Using anatomy measurements from MRI-segmented models, two parametric models were created-one that employs an averaged coronal uterine shape and one with multiple axial measurements of the coronal uterus. Through finite element analysis, the two new parametric methods were compared to the MRI-segmented high-fidelity method and a previously published elliptical low-fidelity method. A clear improvement in the at-term uterine shape was found using the two new parametric methods, and agreement in principal Lagrange strain directions was observed across all modeling methods. These methods provide an effective and efficient way to generate three-dimensional solid models of patient-specific maternal uterine anatomy, advancing possibilities for future research in computational birthing biomechanics.

BACKGROUND: Although peripartum hysterectomy for placenta accreta spectrum disorder is known to be associated with complications at the time of delivery, there are limited data on postpartum outcomes and readmission risk in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze risks for adverse outcomes and postpartum readmissions in the setting of peripartum hysterectomy for placenta accreta spectrum disorder by severity of placenta accreta spectrum disorder subcategory. STUDY DESIGN: Using the 2016-2020 Nationwide Readmissions Database, this retrospective cohort study identified peripartum hysterectomies with a diagnosis of placenta accreta spectrum disorder. The primary exposure was placenta accreta spectrum disorder, subcategorized as placenta accreta vs increta/percreta. The primary outcome was readmission rate and delivery complications. Complications evaluated included the following: (1) nontransfusion severe maternal morbidity (ntSMM), (2) venous thromboembolism, (3) reoperation, (4) intraoperative complications, (5) hemorrhage, (6) sepsis, and (7) surgical site complications. We additionally evaluated delivery hospitalization and readmission mean length of stay, and hospital costs. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models were fit for outcomes adjusting for clinical, demographic, and hospital factors. The association measures were expressed as unadjusted and adjusted odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Between 2016 and 2020, 7864 hysterectomies during a delivery hospitalization with a diagnosis of placenta accreta spectrum disorder were identified (66.5% with placenta accreta and 33.5% with placenta increta/percreta diagnoses). The overall 60-day all-cause readmission rate was 7.3%. Most readmissions (57.2%) occurred within 10 days of hospital discharge. Compared with peripartum hysterectomy with a diagnosis of placenta accreta, hysterectomies with placenta increta/percreta diagnoses carried significantly increased risk of 60-day readmission (adjusted odds ratio, 1.31; 95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.71), inpatient mortality (odds ratio, 13.23; 95% confidence interval, 3.35-52.30), nontransfusion severe maternal morbidity (adjusted odds ratio, 1.43; 95% confidence interval, 1.20-1.71), intraoperative complications (adjusted odds ratio, 2.31; 95% confidence interval, 1.93-2.77), and surgical site complications (adjusted odds ratio, 1.55; 95% confidence interval, 1.23-1.95). The median length of stay during delivery hospitalization was longer for placenta increta/percreta (5.8 days; 95% confidence interval, 5.4-6.1) than for placenta accreta (4.2 days; 95% confidence interval, 4.1-4.3; P<.05). In addition, delivery hospitalization costs were higher in cases of placenta increta/percreta (median, $30,686; 95% confidence interval, $28,922-$32,449) than placenta accreta (median, $21,321; 95% confidence interval, $20,480-$22,163). CONCLUSION: Complication and readmission risks after peripartum hysterectomy with placenta accreta spectrum disorder are high. Compared with patients with placenta accreta, patients with placenta increta/percreta had increased risk for delivery and postoperative complications and postpartum readmission, and increased costs and length of stay.

The treatment responses and outcomes in patients with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD) remain uncertain. This retrospective study was conducted in Taiwan between 2011 and 2020. A microbiological cure was defined as the requirement for a minimum of three consecutive negative cultures following culture conversion that continued until the completion of anti-MAC treatment. A total of 97 patients with MAC-PD were enrolled in this study. The sputum smear-negative conversion rate was 40% (19/47). Thirty (31%) patients achieved sputum culture-negative conversion rates within 3 years after treatment initiation. All patients with negative sputum culture conversion rates achieved microbiological cure. Patients treated with a macrolide + rifamycin + ethambutol (M + R + EMB)-based regimen had a higher microbiological cure rate than the other patients (39% vs 17%, P = 0.023). Patients with persistently positive sputum smears after 6 months of treatment had a lower microbiological cure rate than those with negative sputum smears (6% vs 44%, P < 0.001). Among 30 patients with microbiological cure, the median time from sputum culture conversion to treatment completion was 221.5 (0-483) days, and the 1-year relapse rate was 17%. Treatment with the M + R + EMB-based regimen was associated with a higher microbiological cure rate, and patients with persistently positive sputum smears after 6 months of treatment had a lower microbiological cure rate. IMPORTANCE The treatment responses and outcomes in patients with Mycobacterium avium-intracellulare complex pulmonary disease (MAC-PD) remain uncertain. In this study, patients with MAC-PD treated with a macrolide + rifamycin + ethambutol (M + R + EMB)-based regimen had a higher microbiological cure rate than those treated with other regimens. After 6 months of treatment, patients with persistently positive sputum smears had a lower microbiological cure rate than those with negative sputum smears. Among patients with microbiological cure, the median time from sputum culture conversion to treatment completion was 221.5 days (range, 0-483), and the 1-year relapse rate was 17%.

INTRODUCTION: Guselkumab is a human monoclonal antibody against IL-23 used in the treatment of moderate-to-severe psoriasis. This post-hoc analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of guselkumab in the Asian subpopulation of VOYAGE 1 and VOYAGE 2 through 5 years. METHODS: The proportions of guselkumab-treated Asian patients (VOYAGE 1 and 2) achieving Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) 90 and PASI 100, Investigator's Global Assessment (IGA) scores of 0/1 and 0, and Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) scores of 0/1 (week 100 through week 252) were assessed. Non-responders were patients who met the treatment failure rules. Efficacy endpoints were analyzed using the as-observed methodology (no missing data imputation) for both studies and using non-responder imputation (for patients with any missing data) in VOYAGE 1. Safety outcomes were based on pooled data through week 252. RESULTS: Response rates through week 252 for 199 Asian patients in the guselkumab group in VOYAGE 1 and VOYAGE 2, respectively, were 76.8% and 80.6% (PASI 90), 26.8% and 38.7% (PASI 100), 64.3% and 87.1% (IGA 0/1), and 26.8% and 45.2% (IGA 0). DLQI (0/1) at week 252 was achieved by 52.7% of patients in VOYAGE 1 and 61.3% in VOYAGE 2, while DLQI (0) at week 252 was achieved by 32.7% of patients in VOYAGE 1 and 40.3% in VOYAGE 2. The safety profile was similar to the global population and remained consistent through 5 years. Asian patients were followed for a total of 814 patient-years (PY). Over 85% of the guselkumab-treated patients continued treatment through week 264. The rate of serious adverse events (AEs) at week 252 was 3.07/100 PY. Rates of AEs of interest were low: serious infections, 0.74/100 PY; nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC), no patients; malignancies other than NMSC, 0.12/100 PY; and no major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). CONCLUSION: These analyses confirm a continuous response over 5 years, indicating that guselkumab shows therapeutic longevity in Asian patients requiring long-term treatment for moderate-to-severe psoriasis. Psoriasis­a long-term condition that causes a skin rash with scaly, itchy patches (plaques)­is becoming more prevalent in Asia. To control symptoms of moderate-to-severe psoriasis and achieve a strong improvement in the patient's quality of life, continuous treatment is usually needed. Guselkumab is a medicine that targets specific parts of the immune system to treat moderate-to-severe psoriasis. It is important to understand the long-term benefits of guselkumab in Asian patient populations. Our study analyzed the data from two randomized clinical trials (called VOYAGE 1 and VOYAGE 2) that studied people with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. We examined results for the 199 people from Asia, including Korea and Taiwan, who took part in these studies. Overall, 162 of the 184 (86.6%) people from Asia treated with guselkumab incorporated into these studies continued the treatment for 5 years. Patients treated with guselkumab showed effective clinical responses (improvements measured by clinicians), including high skin clearance, meaning a large reduction in skin surface area affected by psoriasis. On guselkumab, patients also reported improvements in their skin-related health-related quality of life. These improvements and the efficacy of guselkumab were maintained over 5 years of follow-up. The safety results for guselkumab in the Asian subpopulation were similar to those for the global population, showing low rates of serious adverse effects, as expected from this type of medicine. Overall, our study found a favorable benefit­risk profile with continuous guselkumab treatment for 5 years in Asian people with moderate-to-severe psoriasis. This highlights that guselkumab treatment allows long-lasting control of this disease.

Patients with psoriasis were randomized to guselkumab, placebo or adalimumab in the VOYAGE 1 and VOYAGE 2 studies. In this post hoc analysis, difficult-to-treat psoriasis regions in the Asian subpopulation for both the guselkumab and adalimumab groups were compared with placebo at week 16 and the active treatment groups were compared at week 24. Endpoints included patients achieving scores of 0 or 1 (clear or near clear) or 0 (clear) on the scalp-specific Investigator's Global Assessment (ss-IGA), Physician's Global Assessment of the hands and/or feet (hf-PGA), and fingernail PGA (f-PGA), and percentage improvement in target Nail Psoriasis Severity Index (NAPSI) score through week 24. Efficacy was also assessed by prior biologic experience at baseline. A total of 199 eligible Asian patients were included. The proportion of patients achieving "clear" or "near clear" with guselkumab was superior to adalimumab at week 24 for scalp psoriasis ss-IGA (Asian patients, 72 [85.7%] vs 35 [67.3%], P = 0.004), hands and/or feet psoriasis hf-PGA (29 [82.9%] vs 16 [61.5%], P = 0.054), and similar for fingernail psoriasis f-PGA (28 [63.6%] vs 17 [54.8%], P = 0.412). Guselkumab mean improvements in NAPSI were comparable to adalimumab (39.9% vs 35.9%, P = 0.618). Overall, the complete clearance response of scalp, and hands and/or feet at week 24 occurred in a greater proportion of patients in the guselkumab group, irrespective of baseline biologic status (treatment-naïve or treatment-experienced). Guselkumab was superior to adalimumab for the treatment of scalp, and hands and/or feet psoriasis, and proportionally higher for fingernail psoriasis. Findings were comparable to the global study population.

OBJECTIVE: Congenital lymphatic anomalies (LAs) arise due to defects in lymphatic development and often present in utero as pleural effusion, chylothorax, nuchal and soft tissue edema, ascites, or hydrops. Many LAs are caused by single nucleotide variants, which are not detected on routine prenatal testing. METHODS: Demographic data were compared between two subcohorts, those with clinically significant fetal edema (CSFE) and isolated fetal edema. A targeted variant analysis of LA genes was performed using American College of Medical Genetics criteria on whole exome sequencing (WES) data generated for 71 fetal edema cases who remained undiagnosed after standard workup. RESULTS: CSFE cases had poor outcomes, including preterm delivery, demise, and maternal preeclampsia. Pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants were identified in 7% (5/71) of cases, including variants in RASopathy genes, RASA1, SOS1, PTPN11, and a novel PIEZO1 variant. Variants of uncertain significance (VOUS) were identified in 45% (32/71) of cases. In CSFEs, VOUS were found in CELSR1, EPHB4, TIE1, PIEZO1, ITGA9, RASopathy genes, SOS1, SOS2, and RAF1. CONCLUSIONS: WES identified pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants and VOUS in LA genes in 51% of fetal edema cases, supporting WES and expanded hydrops panels in cases of idiopathic fetal hydrops and fluid collections.

BACKGROUND: Gestational weight gain (GWG) and anthropometric trajectories may affect foetal programming and are potentially modifiable. OBJECTIVES: To assess concomitant patterns of change in weight, circumferences and adiposity across gestation as an integrated prenatal exposure, and determine how they relate to neonatal body composition. METHODS: Data are from a prospective cohort of singleton pregnancies (n = 2182) enrolled in United States perinatal centres, 2009-2013. Overall and by prepregnancy BMI group (overweight/obesity and healthy weight), joint latent trajectory models were fit with prenatal weight, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), triceps (TSF) and subscapular (SSF) skinfolds. Differences in neonatal body composition by trajectory class were assessed via weighted least squares. RESULTS: Six trajectory patterns reflecting co-occurring changes in weight and MUAC, SSF and TSF across pregnancy were identified overall and by body mass index (BMI) group. Among people with a healthy weight BMI, some differences were observed for neonatal subcutaneous adipose tissue, and among individuals with overweight/obesity some differences in neonatal lean mass were found. Neonatal adiposity measures were higher among infants born to individuals with prepregnancy overweight/obesity. CONCLUSIONS: Six integrated trajectory patterns of prenatal weight, subcutaneous adipose tissue and circumferences were observed that were minimally associated with neonatal body composition, suggesting a stronger influence of prepregnancy BMI.

Seroclearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is regarded as the functional cure for chronic hepatitis B (CHB). The relationship between human leukocyte antigen (HLA) variants, hepatitis B virus genotype, and longitudinal HBsAg serodecline remains to be explored. A total of 1735 HBeAg-seronegative CHB patients with genotype B or C infection of the community-based REVEAL-HBV cohort were genotyped for rs1710 (HLA-G) and rs2770 (HLA-B) using TaqMan assay. Cox proportional hazard regression and generalized linear mixed models were used to analyze the association of HLA genetic variants with the rate of HBsAg seroclearance and longitudinal HBsAg serodecline. Rs1710 G allele was differentially associated with the HBsAg seroclearance in genotype B [aRR (95% CI) = 0.74 (0.56-0.98)] and genotype C [aRR (95%CI) = 1.43 (1.08-1.88)] infection. Rs2770 G allele was associated with HBsAg seroclearance only in genotype B infection [aRR (95% CI) = 0.69 (0.52-0.91)]. The alleles associated with HBsAg seroclearance were significant predictors for the serodecline of HBsAg levels in an HBV genotype-dependent manner (genotype B infection: rs1710, P = 0.013; rs2770, P = 0.0081; genotype C infection: rs1710, P = 0.0452). Our results suggest both spontaneous HBsAg seroclearance and serodecline are modified by the interaction between HLA variants and HBV genotype.

This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of, exposure to, and factors influencing gas-phase and PM2.5-bound phthalates (PAEs) in nail salons. Data on both indoor and outdoor gas-phase and PM2.5-bound PAEs, carbon dioxide (CO2), temperature, and relative humidity were collected in nail salons. We also used questionnaires to survey building characteristics and occupants' behaviors. The average total gas-phase and PM2.5-bound PAE concentrations indoors were higher than those outdoors by 6 and 3 times, respectively. Diethyl phthalate, diisobutyl phthalate (DiBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were the predominant compounds among both the gas-phase and PM2.5-bound PAEs in indoor air. The volume of the salon's space or the difference of indoor and outdoor CO2 concentrations (dCO2) was significantly associated with indoor PAE concentrations. The ratios of PM2.5-bound to gas-phase PAEs, especially high-molecular-weight PAEs, were positively associated with the dCO2 concentrations. Higher ratios of indoor to outdoor PM2.5-bound DiBP, DnBP, and DEHP concentrations were discovered when more clients visited each day. Building characteristics, ventilation conditions, and occupants' activities have influences on the gas-phase and particle-phase PAEs. The study identifies the characteristics of gas-phase and PM2.5-bound PAEs in nail salons and their influencing factors.
