RESUMO

Predicting soil water status remotely is appealing due to its low cost and large-scale application. During drought, plants can disconnect from the soil, causing disequilibrium between soil and plant water potentials at pre-dawn. The impact of this disequilibrium on plant drought response and recovery is not well understood, potentially complicating soil water status predictions from plant spectral reflectance. This study aimed to quantify drought-induced disequilibrium, evaluate plant responses and recovery, and determine the potential for predicting soil water status from plant spectral reflectance. Two species were tested: sweet corn (Zea mays), which disconnected from the soil during intense drought, and peanut (Arachis hypogaea), which did not. Sweet corn's hydraulic disconnection led to an extended 'hydrated' phase, but its recovery was slower than peanut's, which remained connected to the soil even at lower water potentials (-5 MPa). Leaf hyperspectral reflectance successfully predicted the soil water status of peanut consistently, but only until disequilibrium occurred in sweet corn. Our results reveal different hydraulic strategies for plants coping with extreme drought and provide the first example of using spectral reflectance to quantify rhizosphere water status, emphasizing the need for species-specific considerations in soil water status predictions from canopy reflectance.

RESUMO

We present a case of a 32-y-old male professional surfer who sustained an isolated pelvic ring fracture after wiping out on a large wave and striking the ocean floor during a world championship tour surfing competition in Hawaii. The surfer was rescued by the water patrol lifeguards, evaluated by onsite medical staff, and stabilized for transfer and subsequent surgical management. As surfing and surfing competitions become increasingly popular, medical staff and event organizers must be aware of the possibility for severe, life-threatening injuries during surfing events. Although infrequent, staff must be prepared to manage these injuries, including immediate resuscitation, stabilization, analgesia, and transfer to definitive care. We hope this case encourages not only surf event organizers and medical staff, but also staff of all professional and recreational water sports, to increase their preparedness to stabilize and treat both life-threatening and minor injuries. Expeditious and appropriate treatment of an injured athlete has the potential to decrease morbidity and mortality while maximizing the athletes' functional outcome after injury.

RESUMO

RATIONALE: Superoxide is the most significant homonuclear diatomic anion in biochemistry. Theory predicts 12 doublet (X, A-K) and 12 quartet (a-l) electronic states split by spin orbital coupling into 54 states dissociating to the (3) P(O) + (2) P(O(-) ) limit. Dissociation energies for the 27 bonding states with positive electron affinities have been determined from mass spectrometric data. However, the 27 antibonding states with negative electron affinities have not been experimentally characterized. METHODS: The electron affinity of the hydrogen atom per electron, the Hylleraas, is the fundamental measure of electron correlation. It has been used to assign and evaluate experimental electron affinities of atoms and diatomic molecules. The 27 negative electron affinities of oxygen are estimated from the 27 positive values and the Hylleraas. These values are used to determine frequencies and internuclear separations by fitting theoretical electron impact distributions to the gas-phase mass spectrometric atomic oxygen anion distribution peaking at about 6.5 eV. RESULTS: The dissociation energies, internuclear distances and frequencies giving the first complete set of Morse potential energy curves for the 54 superoxide states dissociating to the lowest limit are reported from mass spectrometric data. The potentials are compared to theoretical and empirical literature curves. CONCLUSIONS: The existence of the 27 bonding and 27 antibonding spin orbital coupling superoxide states dissociating to (3) P(O) + (2) P(O(-) ) is established from mass analyzed thermal, photon, and electron ionization data. There are electron affinities from 0 to 0.15 eV, and onsets and peaks for dissociative electron attachment that cannot be explained by the 54 states. These support the existence of the 36 superoxide spin states dissociating to [(1) D(O) + (2) P(O(-) )] and [(1) S(O) + (2) P(O(-) )] predicted by quantum mechanics. RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated budding yeast that is a common cause of opportunistic infections, rarely giving rise to cellulitis, vasculitis or fasciitis. Necrotizing fasciitis caused by C. neoformans is a rare but serious problem in post-transplant immunosuppression. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of cryptococcal necrotizing fasciitis in the left adductor longus of a patient on immunosuppressive therapy. The patient's medical history was significant for orthotopic heart transplant secondary to cardiac and systemic amyloidosis (AL type) with subsequent cardiac biopsy demonstrating mild rejection (grade 1R). A thigh muscle biopsy demonstrated numerous encapsulated fungi in the fascia and no evidence of myositis. Cryptococcal antigen was subsequently identified in the patient's serum and cerebrospinal fluid. The patient progressed to involvement of the central nervous system, left biceps femoris and skin of the left lower leg by fluconazole-resistant C. neoformans. CONCLUSION: This case illustrates a rare initial presentation of disseminated fluconazole-resistant C. neoformans as an isolated necrotizing fasciitis of the thigh. Necrotizing fungal fasciitis should be considered in immunosuppressed patients with clinical findings of either myositis or cellulitis of a lower extremity.

RESUMO

The inelastic dark matter scenario was proposed to reconcile the DAMA annual modulation with null results from other experiments. In this scenario, weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) scatter into an excited state, split from the ground state by an energy δ comparable to the available kinetic energy of a galactic WIMP. We note that for large splittings δ the dominant scattering at DAMA can occur off of thallium nuclei, with A∼205, which are present as a dopant at the 10(-3) level in NaI(Tl) crystals. For a WIMP mass mχ≈100 GeV/c2 and δ≈200 keV, we find a region in δ-mχ-parameter space which is consistent with all experiments. These parameters, in particular, can be probed in experiments with thallium in their targets, such as KIMS, but are inaccessible to lighter target experiments. Depending on the tail of the WIMP velocity distribution, a highly modulated signal may or may not appear at CRESST-II.

RESUMO

The presence of a new singlet scalar particle a can open up new decay channels for the Higgs boson, through cascades of the form h --> 2a --> X, possibly making discovery through standard model channels impossible. If a is CP odd, its decays are particularly sensitive to new physics. Quantum effects from heavy fields can naturally make h --> 4 g the dominant decay which is difficult to observe at hadron colliders, and is allowed by CERN LEP for m(h) > 82 GeV. However, there are usually associated decays, either h --> 2g2gamma or h --> 4gamma, which are more promising. The decay h-->4gamma is a clean channel that can discover both a and h. At the CERN LHC with 300 fb(-1) of luminosity, a branching ratio of order 10(-4) is sufficient for discovery for a large range of Higgs boson masses. With total luminosity of approximately 8 fb(-1), discovery at the Fermilab Tevatron requires more than 5 x 10(-3) in branching ratio.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To examine risk factors associated with water sports-related cervical spine injuries (WSCSI). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all patients admitted for WSCSI from 1993 to 1997 was performed. The severity of cervical spine injury was assessed by review of medical records and imaging studies. Mechanisms of injury and activities at the time of injury were noted to determine risk factors for cervical spine injuries caused by wave forced impacts (WFI) from activities such as bodysurfing and body boarding. These risks were compared with injuries incurred by shallow water dives (SWD). RESULTS: One hundred patients were analyzed (mean age, 36 years old); 89% were male, 62% were nonresidents of Hawaii, and 75% had a large build. Patients without radiographic evidence of fractures, subluxations, and/or dislocations (n = 26) were significantly older (48 versus 32 years old, p < 0.0001) with a higher rate of pre-existing cervical spine abnormalities (65% versus 15%, p < 0.0001) compared with the remainder of patients (n = 74). Seventy-seven percent of WFI involved nonresidents. The mean age of WFI patients was significantly older than patients involved in SWD (42 versus 25 years). Ninety-six percent of wave-related accidents occurred at moderately to severely rated shorebreak beaches. CONCLUSIONS: Wave forced impacts of the head with the ocean bottom typically occurred at moderate to severe shorebreaks, and involved inexperienced, large-build males in their 40s. Spinal stenosis and degenerative spondylosis may increase the risk of cervical spine injury associated with WFI due to the increased risk of neck hyperextension and hyperflexion impacts inherent to this activity.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study was performed to compare the minimal 2-year outcome of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) allografts versus autografts, both augmented with an iliotibial band tenodesis. TYPE OF STUDY: Retrospective review. METHODS: Forty-six of 52 BPTB ACL reconstructions using allografts and 33 of 37 BPTB ACL reconstructions using autografts were followed up at a mean of 2.75 and 3.36 years, respectively. All patients had an iliotibial band tenodesis. Evaluations included the Lysholm II scale, a questionnaire, physical examination findings, and KT-1000 arthrometry. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were seen between groups in Lysholm II scores or in any subjective category. Most patients (91% allograft; 97% autograft) had good to excellent Lysholm II scores. Sixty-five percent of allograft patients and 73% of autograft patients returned to their preinjury activity level. More allograft patients complained of retropatellar pain (16% v 9% for autograft patients). Fifty-three percent of allograft patients versus 23% of autograft patients had a flexion deficit of 5 degrees or more when compared with the normal contralateral side. When comparing KT-1000 side-to-side differences, we found no significant differences between groups. Ninety-one percent of both groups had maximum side-to-side differences less than 5 mm. Three allograft patients (6.5%) had traumatic ruptures at 12, 19, and 43 months postoperatively versus none in the autograft group. All three allograft patients who sustained postoperative traumatic ruptures had received fresh frozen, nonirradiated allografts. CONCLUSIONS: Results of ACL reconstruction using allografts or autografts augmented with an iliotibial band tenodesis were comparable. The BPTB autograft should remain the gold standard, although the BPTB allograft in ACL reconstruction is a reasonable alternative.

RESUMO

Seventy patients with patellar tendon or hamstring tendon autografts for single-incision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction were evaluated at least 2 years after surgery. All reconstructions were performed by the same surgeon, and metal interference screws were used for fixation of all grafts. No significant differences were noted between groups for Lysholm score, reduction in activity, KT-1000 arthrometer findings, quadriceps muscle size, return to sports, or ability to jump and do hard cuts and pivots. Significantly more patients in the patellar tendon group had patellofemoral pain at 6 months after surgery than did the hamstring tendon patients (48% versus 20%), and at last follow-up the incidence of patellofemoral pain was 42% and 20%, respectively. Fourteen patients in the patellar tendon group and seven in the hamstring tendon group had loss of motion (approximately 5 degrees ). Four patients (two in each group) had treatment failures and their results were not included in the clinical examination data. At 2 years' follow-up, 97% of patients with patellar tendon grafts and 100% of patients with hamstring tendon grafts rated their results as good or excellent. We found that hamstring tendon grafts performed similarly to patellar tendon grafts, although fewer patients in the hamstring tendon group had patellofemoral pain and loss of motion.
