RESUMO

The present study investigated the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis. The ethanol extract of the aerial parts of G. uralensis was separated and purified by different column chromatographies such as macroporous resin, silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20, and through preparative HPLC and recrystallization. Thirteen compounds were isolated and identified as(2S)-6-[(Z)-3-hydroxymethyl-2-butenyl]-5,7,3'-trihydroxy-4'-methoxy-dihydroflavanone(1),(2S)-8-[(E)-3-hydroxymethyl-2-butenyl]-5,7,3',5'-tetrahydroxy-dihydroflavanone(2), α,α'-dihydro-5,4'-dihydroxy-3-acetoxy-2-isopentenylstilbene(3), 6-prenylquercetin(4), 6-prenylquercetin-3-methyl ether(5), formononetin(6), 3,3'-dimethylquercetin(7), chrysoeriol(8), diosmetin(9),(10E,12Z,14E)-9,16-dioxooctadec-10,12,14-trienoic acid(10), 5,7,3',4'-tetrahydroxy-6-prenyl-dihydroflavanone(11), naringenin(12), dibutylphthalate(13). Compounds 1-3 are new compounds, and compounds 10 and 13 are isolated from aerial parts of this plant for the first time.

RESUMO

Purpose@#To evaluate the incidence and identify the risk factors for radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis among patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. @*Methods@#A meta-analysis was conducted. Eight electronic databases (Medline, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang Database, and Chinese Scientific Journals Database) were systematically searched from inception to 4 March 2023 for relevant studies. Study selection and data extraction were conducted by two independent authors. The Newcastle‒Ottawa scale was used for quality assessment among the included studies. Data synthesis and analyses were performed in R software package version 4.1.3 and Review Manager Software 5.4. The pooled incidence was calculated using proportions with 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and the risk factors were evaluated using the odds ratio (OR) with 95% CIs. Sensitivity analysis and predesigned subgroup analyses were also conducted. @*Results@#A total of 22 studies published from 2005 to 2023 were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that the incidence of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis was 99.0% among nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients, and the incidence of severe radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis was 52.0%. Poor oral hygiene, overweight before radiotherapy, oral pH < 7.0, the use of oral mucosal protective agents, smoking, drinking, combined chemotherapy, and the use of antibiotics at early treatment stage are risk factors for severe radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis. Sensitivity analysis and subgroup analyses also revealed that our results are stable and reliable. @*Conclusions@#Almost all patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma have suffered from radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis, and more than half of patients have experienced severe oral mucositis. Facilitating oral health might be the key focus of reducing the incidence and severity of radiotherapy-induced oral mucositis among nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients.Registration numberCRD42022322035.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Decompression surgery in patients with spinal cord injury (SCI) has a neuroprotective effect by alleviating secondary injury and improving neurological outcomes. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC), a drug approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration, has been shown to play neuroprotective roles via attenuation of apoptosis and inflammation. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of early or late decompression surgery in combination with NAC administration on acute SCI, as well as investigate the underlying mechanisms of its actions. METHODS: In this study, an acute SCI model was established in rats. The rats were treated with decompression surgery 24/48 h post-SCI in combination with or without NAC. RESULTS: The results showed that decompression surgery in combination with NAC lead to a better outcome than decompression alone, as demonstrated by the higher Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan scores. Histopathological examination demonstrated that early decompression surgery in combination with NAC exerted the best therapeutic effect on spinal cord recovery, which was further confirmed by the extent of inflammation and apoptosis. Additionally, we found that NAC might compensate for a lack of late surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, early decompression surgery and NAC could be a promising combination for the treatment of acute SCI, and its therapeutic effects may be associated with the regulation of inflammation and apoptosis.

RESUMO

@#<b>Objective</b> To study the feasibility of clinical application of an individualized customized material. <b>Methods</b> Five batches of individualized customized materials were randomly selected, from which 10 cm × 11 cm samples were intercepted for experimental analysis. Among them, 10 cm × 10 cm materials were selected to perform dosimetric analysis and HU change analysis before and after irradiation with a radiotherapy dose for breast cancer of 50 Gy as the irradiation basis. The center Point 1 on the lower surface of the individualized material and the center Point 2 of the solid water volume were selected for dosimetric analysis before and after the sample is irradiated. After reaching a sufficient amount of irradiation, the 1 cm × 10 cm materials intercepted in the center position and the remaining 1 cm × 10 cm materials after the first sampling were sent to the material science laboratory for analysis of physical properties of density, viscosity, hardness, and tear strength. <b>Results</b> In the comparative analysis of HU values before and after exposure, after receiving 50 Gy dose irradiation, the difference rate of HU value was 5.252%, which was close to the expected 5% difference rate in clinical medicine. In the dosimetric analysis of Point 1 and Point 2, the dose in the irradiated samples was significantly higher than that in the unirradiated samples; the dose in Point 1 increased by 3.742%, and the dose in Point 2 increased by 2.039%. Before and after irradiation, except for the physical density which showed a significant difference, there was no significant difference in viscosity, hardness, and tear strength. <b>Conclusion</b> The individualized customized material can meet the requirements of routine clinical medicine.

RESUMO

Chemical constituents from aerial parts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis were analyzed and identified using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with hybrid quadrupole-orbitrap mass spectrometry(UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS). The chromatographic column of Waters Acquity UPLC BEH-C_(18)(2.1 mm×100 mm, 1.7 µm) was adopted, with acetonitrile-water(0.5% formic acid) as mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.2 mL·min~(-1). Data was collected in positive and negative modes of electrospray ionization(ESI). A total of 55 compounds, including 42 flavonoids, 9 stilbenes, 2 coumarins, 1 lignin and 1 phenolic acid, which were characterized in the aerial parts of G. uralensis based on accurate molecular mass information of molecular and product ions provided by UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap-MS based on comparison with standard substances and references. It is an effective and accurate method to provide chemical information of constituents in aerial parts of G. uralensis, and can provide a reference for further study on pharmacodynamic material basis and resources development and utilization.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To characterize the classification, incidence, diagnosis and prognosis of traumatic choroidal injuries. METHODS: Subjects were selected from the database of the Eye Injury Vitrectomy Study (EIVS) and were examined for occurrences of different categories of choroidal injuries. Standard photographs were collected. Anatomical and visual outcomes were assessed in patients with greater than 1 year of follow-up. Eyes that had no light perception (NLP) and/or phthisis bulbi were defined as having had unfavourable outcomes. The percentage of eyes with an unfavourable outcome was analysed for different types of choroidal injuries. RESULTS: Nine categories of choroidal injuries with distinctive features were identified in the EIVS database. The incidence and the percentage of eyes with an unfavourable outcome in each injury category were as follows: suprachoroidal effusion, 21.2% (7.2%); suprachoroidal haemorrhage, 12.8% (11.2%); massive suprachoroidal haemorrhage, 4.0% (64.9%); choroidal avulsion, 4.2% (92.2%); traumatic chorioretinal rupture, 1.8% (13.3%); choroidal rupture, 4.8% (6.8%); choroidal loss, 1.6% (79.3%); choroidal hole, 1.1% (5.3%); and choroidal damage at the wound site, 39.2% (17.7%). CONCLUSIONS: Ocular trauma can cause a variety of choroidal injuries that have distinctive features, some of which are associated with a high frequency of unfavourable prognoses.

RESUMO

To analyze the development of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19), this study systematically retrieved relevant Chinese and English literatures from both CNKI and Web of Science database platforms by bibliometric research method and CiteSpace 5.5.R2 software to obtain information and visualize relevant literatures. A total of 695 Chinese and 446 English literatures were included in this paper. Statistics showed that China had published most of the literatures and established close cooperation with the United States and the United Kingdom. Through the analysis, Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology and its affiliated hospitals published the largest number of the publications. Moreover, the highly productive journals including Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine and The Lancet covered eight major fields, such as medicine, medical virology, radiation medicine, infectious disease, and traditional Chinese medicine. Besides, a total of 35 special COVID-19 funds were recently established to subsidize these studies. The key words and themes analysis indicated that protein structure of COVID-19, receptor targets and mechanisms of action, integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, screening and development of antiviral drugs from traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, vaccine research as well as epidemiological characteristics and prediction are current study hotspots. This study provides a reference for researchers to rapidly master main study directions of COVID-19 and screen out relevant literatures.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Younger patients who underwent vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) display more aggressive nature distinguished from the older patients. Preoperative anti-VEGF therapy has been widely used as an adjunct for PDR surgery. However, the effect of anti-VEGF administration in young diabetics has rarely been evaluated in previous studies. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ranibizumab pretreatment on vitrectomy surgery in young patients with PDR. METHODS: This was a prospective nonrandomized comparative study. Young patients (<40 years old) undergoing diabetic vitrectomy with or without ranibizumab pretreatment (25 eyes in each group) were analyzed in this study. The use of the drug was determined by the patients' own preference. The two surgical groups were matched according to a complexity score. Intravitreal injection of ranibizumab (IVR) was performed 3-5 days prior to the vitrectomy surgery in the IVR group. Intraoperative records including total surgical time, intraoperative bleeding, the use of endodiathermy, the frequency of relaxing retinotomies, the incidence of iatrogenic retinal breaks, and the use of perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL) and silicone oil tamponade, and postoperative indices regarding recurrent vitreous hemorrhage (VH), neovascular glaucoma (NVG), recurrent retinal detachment, and visual outcome were evaluated between the two groups. All patients were followed up for one year after surgery. RESULTS: In young PDR patients, the severity of intraoperative bleeding was significantly lower in the IVR group than in the control group (P=0.04). The total surgical time was shorter in the IVR group than in the control group. However, the rate of relaxing retinotomy, the incidence of iatrogenic retinal breaks and the use of PFCL and silicone oil tamponade were not affected by IVR pretreatment but affected by the complexity score of the case. Early postvitrectomy hemorrhage occurred less frequently in the IVR group than in the control group (P<0.001), Early visual recovery was better in the IVR group than in the control group (P=0.03). However, there were no significant differences in the development of late recurrent VH, NVG, recurrent retinal detachment, and final visual outcome. CONCLUSIONS: IVR pretreatment is a safe and effective adjunct to vitrectomy in reducing intraoperative and early postvitrectomy bleeding and should be suggested in young PDR patients. However, IVR does not reduce the incidence of intraoperative and late postoperative complications in these patients. The risk of iatrogenic retinal breaks and silicone oil use are closely correlated with the complexity score of the surgical cases.

RESUMO

Objective: To explore the relationship between lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and chronic cardio-renal syndrome (CRS) in elderly patients. Methods: Chronic heart failure (CHF) patients age ≥ 65 years old, who hospitalized in the department of Cardiology of Hebei General Hospital from December 2017 to October 2019, were included in this study. According to the estimate glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) level, patients were divided into CRS group (eGFR<60 ml·min-1·1.73 m-2) and CHF group (eGFR ≥60 ml·min-1·1.73 m-2). The blood index and basic disease information were collected and compared. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were measured by echocardiography. The correlation between clinical indicators and cardio-renal function (LVEF and eGFR) was assessed. The multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the related risk factors of CRS in elderly patients; subgroup logistic regression analysis was performed according to the basic disease of patients to assess the relationship between Lp(a) and CRS. Results: A total of 172 elderly patients (85 males (49.4%), aged 79 (71, 84) years) were finally enrolled. Among them, 88 cases (51.2%) were in CRS group and 84 cases (48.8%) were in CHF group. Age (80 (74, 84) years old vs. 74 (70, 82) years old) and LP (a) levels (222.0 (112.0, 445.3) mg/L vs. 155.0 (97.0, 348.7) mg/L) were significantly higher in the CRS group than in the CHF group (P<0.05). Lp(a) levels were negatively correlated with LVEF (r=-0.155, P=0.043) and eGFR (r=-0.220, P=0.004) in total cohort. In the subgroup analysis of patients with 2 high-incidence basic diseases (coronary heart disease and hypertension), Lp(a) was negatively correlated with LVEF (r=-0.250, P=0.007) in the coronary heart disease group, and negatively correlated with eGFR (r=-0.233, P=0.013) in the hypertension group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age (OR = 1.069, 95%CI: 1.017-1.124, P= 0.009) and Lp(a) (OR = 3.719, 95%CI: 1.339-10.326, P = 0.012) were independent correlates of CRS. The results of logistic regression analysis showed that Lp(a) was an independent correlative factor of CRS in the subgroups of coronary heart disease (OR=3.207, 95%CI: 1.129-9.108, P=0.029) and hypertension (OR=3.054, 95%CI: 1.086-8.587, P=0.034). Conclusion: Serum Lp(a) level is independently related with CRS in elderly patients.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To study the change of concentrations of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in vitreous cavity after vitrectomy in eyes with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). METHODS: In this retrospective study, intravitreal fluid samples were taken at baseline (beginning of the vitrectomy) and postoperatively (several days later after vitrectomy) at the time of prophylactic injection of bevacizumab in forty-eight eyes of forty-eight patients with PDR. Postvitrectomy fluid samples were divided into four groups according to the time interval between the vitrectomy and the injection (group 1, 3-5 days; group 2, 6-10 days; group 3, 11-15 days; group 4, 16-21 days; twelve eyes in each group). Postvitrectomy fluid sample was paired with baseline sample for each eye. VEGF concentrations in the samples were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Recurrent vitreous hemorrhage and neovascular glaucoma within six months postvitrectomy were also analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, the intravitreal VEGF level after vitrectomy (median, 36.95 pg/ml; range, 3.2-1,299.4 pg/ml) was significantly less than the VEGF level at baseline (median, 704.5 pg/ml; range, 30.6-1,981.1 pg/ml). Postoperative and baseline VEGF levels were significantly correlated (r = 0.499, p < 0.01). Both the absolute value of postoperative VEGF concentrations and the postop/baseline VEGF ratios declined with time and dramatically decreased in groups 3 and 4. In only two eyes, the postoperative VEGF level was even higher than the baseline VEGF level (postop/baseline VEGF ratio >1), and recurrent vitreous hemorrhage developed within six months in these two eyes. CONCLUSIONS: After vitrectomy for PDR, intravitreal VEGF levels decreased substantially in the majority of patients, while persistent high-VEGF level occurred in a few individuals. Postoperative VEGF levels and postop/baseline VEGF ratio declined with time. The postop/preop VEGF ratio may serve as a predictor for late complications.

RESUMO

An 80 year-old male patient was prescribed a bandage contact lens on the left eye 5 years ago because of an injury on the eye by a wooden stick. He was never followed up to remove the contact lens. Two years ago, he suffered from gradually decreased visual acuity in the left eye. After removing the contact lens, his visual acuity gradually increased to 12/20 and the symptom revealed. Intraocular pressure, corneal endothelium density, corneal curvature, and the anterior chamber depth were within the normal range in the left eye, and were comparable with the right eye. Although no permanent damage was found in the patient, a strict follow-up procedure is strongly recommended for patients who receive a bandage contact lens.

RESUMO

<p><b>OBJECTIVE</b>To study the effect of cordycepin on cell cycle, apoptosis and autophagy of human tongue cancer TCA-8113 cells and explore the mechanism of cordycepin for inhibiting the occurrence of tongue cancer.</p><p><b>METHODS</b>CCK-8 method was used to assess the inhibitory effect of cordycepin on TCA-8113 cell proliferation in vitro. The cell cycle and cell apoptosis of TCA-8113 cells treated with different concentrations of cordycepin were analyzed using flow cytometry. The expressions of apoptosis-related genes caspase-3, caspase-9, Bcl-2, and Bax were examined using quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expressions of autophagy-related proteins LC-3β, P62, p-mTOR, and AMPK.</p><p><b>RESULTS</b>CCK-8 assay showed that cordycepin significantly inhibited the proliferation of TCA-8113 cells in a concentration-dependent manner with an IC of 3.548 mg/mL at 24 h and an IC of 1.185 mg/mL at 48 h. Flow cytometric analysis showed that cordycepin caused cell cycle arrest at S phase and dose-dependently increased the apoptotic rate of TCA-8113 cells. Treatment of the cells with cordycepin enhanced the expressions of Bax, caspase-3 and caspase-9 at both the mRNA and protein levels and inhibited the expression of the antiapoptotic gene Bcl-2. Immunohistochemistry demonstrated that cordycepin promoted the expression of LC-3β and AMPK and inhibited the expression of P62 and p-mTOR.</p><p><b>CONCLUSION</b>Cordycepin inhibits the proliferation and induces apoptosis of HCT-116 cells through the mitochondrial pathway and induces autophagy via the AMPK/mTOR pathway.</p>

RESUMO

In the article, the development of medical treatment for eye injuries in the mainland of China was reviewed. According to the data provided in Eye Injury Vitrectomy Study (EIVS), 27% of 72 eyes with no light perception (NLP) gained recovery in term of antomy and visual function. Vitrectomy initiated at more than 4 weeks after open eye injury is an independent risk factor for developing PVR. Prognosis of anatomy and visual function of the injured eye with PVR is markedly worse than that without PVR. Serious injuries of ciliary body, choroid and retina are three key parts of the eye with NLP. The concept that the treatment of the eye injury gradually focus on the whole globe is embodied. The data from 13575 in patients with traumatic eyes in 14 hospitals revealed that the rate of immediate enucleation was remarkable reduced with comparison of 20 years ago.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The objective of the study was to delineate clinical characteristics, surgical interventions, anatomic and visual outcomes of ruptured eye balls after trauma, and establish the prognostic indicators, which can assist clinicians in making correct surgical decisions during globe exploration for ruptured eyes. DESIGN: The study design used was a multicentre prospective cohort study, including six university-affiliated tertiary hospitals. PARTICIPANTS: We selected 242 cases of ruptured globe from the Eye Injury Vitrectomy Study database, until 31 December 2012. METHODS: All selected cases underwent vitreoretinal surgery, enucleation or evisceration, and were followed up for at least 6 months. Age, visual acuity (VA) after injury, ocular trauma zone, time to surgery, corneal laceration, scleral wound, extrusion of iris or lens, ciliary body damage, intraocular haemorrhage, retinal detachment or defect, proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and choroidal damage were the predisposing factors evaluated by logistic regression models. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We compared the pre-surgical indicators between cases of anatomically restored eyes with VA of 4/200 or better, or eyes with initial no light perception restored light perception or better, and cases of VA worse than 4/200, silicone oil-sustained eyes, phthisis or enucleation. RESULTS: Nearly 40% of cases with ruptured globe were anatomically restored through vitreoretinal surgery. The closed-funnel retinal detachment or extensive retinal loss (odds ratio [OR] = 3.38, P = 0.026), PVR-C (OR = 3.45, P = 0.008), and choroidal damage (OR = 4.20, P = 0.004) were correlated with poor outcomes. CONCLUSION: The closed-funnel retinal detachment or extensive retinal loss, PVR-C, and choroidal damage are the risk factors for unfavourable outcomes in globe ruptures.

RESUMO

The cellular redox states directly affect cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis, and the redox states changes is particularly important to the regulation of cell survival or death. Thioredoxin is a kind of oxidation regulatory protein which is widely exists in organisms, and the change of redox states is also an important process in redox regulation. In this work, we have used the site-directed mutagenesis of protein, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis fluorescence spectroscopy and circular dichroism etc., to investigate redox states changes between TRX (E. coli) and glutathione peroxidase(GPX3) during their interaction. By observing the fluorescence spectra of TRX and its mutants, we have studied the protein interactions as well as the redox states switching between oxidation state TRX and the reduced state GPX3. The results demonstrate the presence of interactions and electron exchanges occurring between reduced GPX3 and oxidized TRX, which is of significance for revealing the physical and chemical mechanism of TRX in intracellular signal transduction.

RESUMO

In this case series of 74 patients with coexisting vitreoretinal injury and severe corneal opacification, after temporary keratoprosthesis (TKP) assisted pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), an allograft corneal transplant was not performed at the same time; instead, the patient's trephined corneal button was sutured back. One year after the surgery, if intraocular pressure of the injured eyes was above 8 mmHg, removing silicone oil was attempted, and penetrating keratoplasty could be performed. Finally, 10 eyes (13.5%) were enucleated due to atrophia bulbi; 46 eyes (62.2%) were silicone-oil sustained; 15 eyes (20.3%) were anatomically restored; and 3 eyes (4.0%) experienced recurrent retinal detachment. These figures only demonstrate a small percentage of the injured eyes in our series, which have PKP indications. It is a practical option to suture back the patient's trephined cornea following a TKP assisted PPV; keratoplasty was reserved for selected cases.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect and toxicity of organic selenium (Pro-Se) with inorganic selenium (IOSe) in preventing asthma in ovalbumin-induced asthmatic mice. After the mice were treated orally with Pro-Se and IOSe, respectively, the plasma Se levels, Se accumulation in liver and kidney, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α ), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 ß ), oxidative stress, and NF- κ B activation in lung were examined. The results showed that the serumal Se levels in the mice fed the Pro-Se were significant (P < 0.01) elevations. It results in restoration of the level of endogenous antioxidant enzyme, lower levels of TNF- α and IL-1 ß , and activated NF- κ B in the asthmatic mice. Our experiments have demonstrated profound differences between the activities of organic selenium and inorganic selenium in experimental conditions. These data provide an important proof of the concept that organic selenium might be a new potential therapy for the management of childhood asthma in humans.

RESUMO

Vitamin D (VD) was studied for its anti-inflammatory activities with prepared VD-loaded nanoemulsions (VDNM) in ovalbumin-induced asthmatic mice in this paper. In this study, we prepared VDNM for the delivery of VD from the established composition of solid self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (sSEDDS) by spray-drying technique and evaluated its bioavailability (BA) and anti-inflammatory activities in experimental allergic asthma. After the mice were treated orally with VD or VDNM, the plasma 25(OH) D levels, polymorphonuclear cells, tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß), total antioxidant activity, and C3 and C4 complement protein levels were studied, respectively. Treatment with VDNM reduced MPO activity, oxidative stress, C3 protein level, O2(-) level as well as the production of IL-1ß and TNF-α. Pharmacokinetic studies showed that a significant increase in the maximum concentration (Cmax) and AUC0→24 h were observed in VDNM group when compared with VD group (P < 0.01). The result revealed that VDNM led to an improvement in oral BA of VD in a murine ovalbumin-induced asthma model. These data provided an important proof that VDNM might be a new potential therapy for the management of asthma in humans.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Manual wheelchairs are an important mobility device for hemiplegic stroke patients, but understandably difficult to operate. A novel mobility device termed the functional electrical stimulation-assisted leg-propelled wheelchair (FES-LW) was proposed and a field test conducted to evaluate its clinical performance by comparison against a manual wheelchair (MW). METHODS: A total of 20 hemiplegic patients were recruited from the National Cheng Kung University Hospital. They were instructed to successively propel the FES-LW and MW comfortably, as fast as possible, in along an oval pathway. The finish time, deviation frequencies, deviation percentage, physiological cost index (PCI), and modified Ashworth scale (MAS) of affected ankle were measured and compared. FINDINGS: Subjects can propel the FES-LW with 40.1% less finish time (P=0.003); 23.7% lower deviation frequencies (P=0.009) and 36.7% lower deviation percentage (P=0.001); and 17.7% lower PCI (P=0.022) than the MW. In addition, the MAS of the affected ankle was noticeably reduced (P=0.002) after propelling the FES-LW. INTERPRETATION: The FES-LW showed better controllability, cardiopulmonary response and positive effects on reducing spasticity versus the MW. The FES-LW is a suitable alternative to a MW for the needs of hemiplegic stroke patients.
