RESUMO

We report on a fully bidirectional 680 km fiber link connecting two cities for which the equipment, the setup, and the characterization are managed for the first time by an industrial consortium. The link uses an active telecommunication fiber network with parallel data traffic and is equipped with three repeater laser stations and four remote double bidirectional erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. We report a short-term stability at 1 s integration time of 5.4×10-16 in 0.5 Hz bandwidth and a long-term stability of 1.7×10-20 at 65,000 s of integration time. The accuracy of the frequency transfer is evaluated as 3×10-20. No shift is observed within the statistical uncertainty. We show a continuous operation over five days with an uptime of 99.93%. This performance is comparable with the state-of-the-art coherent links established by National Metrology Institutes in Europe. It is a first step in the construction of an optical fiber network for metrology in France, which will give access to an ultrahigh performance frequency standard to a wide community of scientific users.

RESUMO

Leveraging the unrivalled performance of optical clocks as key tools for geo-science, for astronomy and for fundamental physics beyond the standard model requires comparing the frequency of distant optical clocks faithfully. Here, we report on the comparison and agreement of two strontium optical clocks at an uncertainty of 5 × 10(-17) via a newly established phase-coherent frequency link connecting Paris and Braunschweig using 1,415 km of telecom fibre. The remote comparison is limited only by the instability and uncertainty of the strontium lattice clocks themselves, with negligible contributions from the optical frequency transfer. A fractional precision of 3 × 10(-17) is reached after only 1,000 s averaging time, which is already 10 times better and more than four orders of magnitude faster than any previous long-distance clock comparison. The capability of performing high resolution international clock comparisons paves the way for a redefinition of the unit of time and an all-optical dissemination of the SI-second.

RESUMO

We report a limit on the fractional temporal variation of the proton-to-electron mass ratio as 1/(m(P)/m(e)) partial differential/partial differential(t)(m(P)/m(e))=(-3.8+/-5.6) x 10(-14) yr(-1), obtained by comparing the frequency of a rovibrational transition in SF6 with the fundamental hyperfine transition in Cs. The SF6 transition was accessed using a CO2 laser to interrogate spatial 2-photon Ramsey fringes. The atomic transition was accessed using a primary standard controlled with a Cs fountain. This result is direct and model-free.

RESUMO

We have recorded the Doppler profile of a well-isolated rovibrational line in the nu(2) band of (14)NH(3). Ammonia gas was placed in an absorption cell thermalized by a water-ice bath. By extrapolating to zero pressure, we have deduced the Doppler width which gives a first measurement of the Boltzmann constant k(B) by laser spectroscopy. A relative uncertainty of 2 x 10(-4) has been obtained. The present determination should be significantly improved in the near future and contribute to a new definition of the kelvin.

RESUMO

We use a new technique to disseminate microwave reference signals along ordinary optical fiber. The fractional frequency resolution of a link of 86 km in length is 10(-17) for a one day integration time, a resolution higher than the stability of the best microwave or optical clocks. We use the link to compare the microwave reference and a CO2/OsO4 frequency standard that stabilizes a femtosecond laser frequency comb. This demonstrates a resolution of 3 x 10(-14) at 1 s. An upper value of the instability introduced by the femtosecond laser-based synthesizer is estimated as 1 x 10(-14) at 1 s.

RESUMO

The efficacy of sucrose combined with CaCl2 during osmotic dehydration (OD) was tested for the control of Botrytis cinerea, Colletotrichum acutatum, and Penicillium expansum growth on lightly processed apple slices. The objective of this work was to determine whether the addition of CaCl2 in the osmotic solutions would limit the proliferation of fungal decay organisms. Slices were submitted to OD for 1 h at 25 degrees C in solutions containing 5 to 65% sucrose. Calcium chloride was added to a similar set of sucrose solutions at 0 to 8%. Control slices were made of untreated slices, and slices were processed in water. The mass ratio of the slices did not vary when fruit pieces were processed in solutions containing 5 to 65% sucrose. These slices showed a high susceptibility to spoilage compared to the control slices not submitted to OD: a significant twofold and 60% increase in decay area caused by B. cinerea and P. expansum, respectively, was observed when slices were processed in 50% sucrose/0% CaCl2; C. acutatum showed a significant 50% increase in decay area when slices were processed in 20% sucrose/0% CaCl2. Calcium uptake was significantly increased when slices were processed in CaCl2 solutions, and the highest Ca content was observed when processed in 8% CaCl2, reaching 40 times that of the control slices processed in water. Calcium-treated slices were less susceptible to spoilage by all three pathogens, and the most effective combination in reducing apple slice spoilage was 20 to 30% sucrose combined with 2% CaCl2.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Two audits of antibiotic prescriptions were conducted within the framework of the fight against bacterial resistance conducted at the Valence Hospital Center (Drôme, France). The first was made between July 1st and 31st 1998 and the second between December 15th 1999 and January 15th, 2000, both based on the prospective observation scheme. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We studied prescriptions written for antibiotics, recording the compound prescribed, the therapeutic indication, the type of infection and the prescriber. Results of these two audits were compared with the chi-square test. RESULTS: The prescriber was correctly identified (name + signature) on 63.1% of the prescriptions in 1998 and on 92.9% in 1999-2000. The patient was correctly identified (name + first name + age) in 89.9% of the prescriptions in 1998 compared with 95% in 1999-2000. For the compounds prescribed, 30.2% of the prescriptions were complete (name + dose + frequency + duration + administration route) in 1998 compared with 44.5% in 1999-2000. The antibiotic was prescribed for prophylactic purposes in 16.2% of the cases in 1998 and in 8.6% in 1999-2000. Empirical curative antibiotic therapy was prescribed in 44.7% of the cases in 1998 and in 49.3% in 1999-2000. Curative antibiotic therapy was prescribed in 16.2% in 1998 and in 9.3% in 1999-2000 for proven infection and with no mention of proof in 22.9% in 1998 and 32.8% in 2000. DISCUSSION: We observed an improvement in the identification of the prescriber, the patient and the drugs used between the two audits. These results were generally satisfactory and reflect the impact of an information campaign conducted after the first audit. Such audits are part of the ongoing policy designed around the antibiotic booklet and within the framework of the newly instituted antibiotic committees.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Botrytis cinerea is an economically important pathogen. Epidemiological studies are difficult because of the genetic variability within this species. The objectives of this work were to study the variability and to compare the inhibitory effects of Ca on three isolates of B. cinerea from decayed apple (B) and grape (C and C77:4). Among these isolates, B had the least radial growth but had a sporulation rate 40% higher than that of both C77:4 and C. In situ, isolate C incited the largest decay area in the fruit of two of four apple cultivars examined and had the highest polygalacturonase activity in vitro. Maximum mycelial growth was reached with CaCl(2) at 1 g liter(-1) for isolates B and C77:4 and at 4 g liter(-1) for isolate C. Calcium (CaCl(2)) inhibited polygalacturonase activity at 1 g liter(-1) for C and C77:4 and at 16 g liter(-1) for B. Calcium infiltration reduced decay caused by all three isolates by three to five times. Mycelial DNA analysis showed that 42% of the character loci scored were polymorphic and the greatest similarities were found between B and C77:4. These results support the evidence that the biological and statistical variability in research can be affected by the B. cinerea isolate selected. Despite this variation, Ca treatment of apples reduced decay caused by all three Botrytis cinerea isolates.

RESUMO

The CO2 laser locked onto a saturated absorption resonance of OsO4 provides a secondary frequency standard in the 10 mm region, with an accuracy of 50 Hz to 1 kHz. For averaging times less than 100 s its stability performance is better than the Hydrogen maser. This paper deals with the present attempt to increase this performance by using a two-photon molecular resonance as a reference. We begin with some preliminary and promising results on a two-photon line of SF6 leading to characteristics similar to those obtained with a saturation line of OsO4 . Then two alternative methods to increase the resolution are presented : optical detection of slow molecules and a new development of the well-known Ramsey fringes. Metrological features are analyzed for both methods.

RESUMO

Carbon dioxide lasers have been used in an offset-lock configuration to obtain saturation spectra of ozone, monosubstituted with O-17, at a linewidth of a few kHz. Rich hyperfine structures result from the O-17 nucleus, spin 5/2. These are used, together with earlier microwave data, to obtain the corresponding hyperfine parameters. The spectra also illustrate the sensitivity of hyperfine structures to subtle vibration-rotation interactions. Copyright 1998 Academic Press.

RESUMO

Thin films transparent to optical radiation offer polarization properties that are enhanced when the thickness of the film is an odd multiple of the quarter-wavelength. The transmission and reflection properties of a 1.16-µm-thick film of diamond realized by plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition have been studied at 10.6 µm. A compact polarizer built with four films at a Brewster angle revealed an extinction ratio of better than 1:1000 of the S polarization. The interest in optics in which parasitic-reflected or transmitted beams do not exist is pointed out. The high damage threshold of diamonds opens the possibility of controlling the polarization characteristics of high-power lasers used, for example, for soldering and cutting applications.
