BACKGROUND: CTNNB1 gene encodes beta catenin, a transcriptional activator of Wnt pathway involved in the pathogenesis of odontogenic lesions. Though located intramembranously, its translocation into cytoplasm and nucleus could trigger cell proliferation, inhibition of apoptosis, invasion and migration of the tumour cell. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five electronic databases including MEDLINE by PubMed, Google scholar, Scopus, Trip, Cochrane library and EMBASE until 1 January 2023 without period restriction were thoroughly searched. Those articles that identified CTNNB1 mutation and beta catenin in odontogenic lesions were included for review. Risk of bias was analysed for each study using QUADAS 2 tool and Review Manager 5.3 was used to output its result. RESULTS: Thirty four published articles were included for data synthesis. A total of 1092 cases of odontogenic lesions were assessed for both CTNNB1 mutation and beta catenin expression. CTNNB1 mutation was observed in ameloblastoma, calcifying odontogenic cyst, calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour and all malignant odontogenic tumours. The beta catenin expression (nuclear and cytoplasmic) was maximum in odontogenic keratocyst and calcifying odontogenic cyst. The expression was variable in ameloblastomas, membranous in odontomas, calcifying cystic odontogenic tumour and nuclear in all malignant tumours. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: High recurrence of odontogenic keratocyst and aggressiveness of solid ameloblastoma and malignant odontogenic tumours could be associated with the nuclear translocation of beta catenin. Disparity between CTNNB1 mutation and beta catenin expression within odontogenic lesions suggests alternate routes of beta catenin activation. The review results support the unique localisation of beta catenin as a helpful diagnostic factor in the pathogenesis of odontogenic lesions.

Research and development in health care industry is in persistence progression. To make it more patient-friendly or to get maximum benefits from it, special attention to different advanced drug delivery system (ADDS) is employed that delivers the drug at the target site and will be able to sustain/control release of drugs. ADDS should be non-toxic, biodegradable, biocompatible along with desirable showing physicochemical and functional properties. These drug delivery systems can be totally based on polymers, either with natural or synthetic polymers. The molecular weight of polymer can be tuned and different groups of polymers can be modified or substituted with other functional groups. Degree of substitution is also tailored. Cationic starch in recent years is exploited in drug delivery, tissue engineering and biomedicine. Due to their abundant availability, low cost, easy chemical modification, low toxicity, biodegradability and biocompatibility, extensive research is now being carried out. Our present discussion will shed light on the usage of cationic starch in health care system.

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most established oral cancers in India, with high morbidity and mortality. The most common etiological agent associated with it is tobacco (in any form), which releases chemical carcinogens that affect not only the oral epithelial lining but also deep stromal structures such as minor salivary glands. They may cause changes in ductal or acinar part of gland depending on tumor grade, thus providing a fertile soil for tumor growth and recurrence. Aims and Objective: To observe the frequency of minor salivary gland changes associated with tobacco as well as to measure the length and depth of ductal involvement in routine tissue sections of OED and OSCC. Materials and Methods: A total of 94 hematoxylin and eosinstained archival slides which included cases of well, moderate, and poorly differentiated OSCC and oral epithelial dysplasia were histopathologically evaluated to observe changes in different components of minor salivary gland. Ductal hyperplasia, ductal metaplasia, mucous pooling within duct, acinar degeneration, pattern of malignant cell invasion (single/clusters), inflammatory infiltrate, eosinophilic cuffing around the gland, and glandular/vascular involvement were evaluated in each slide and correlated with different grades of OSCC. Results: Ductal hyperplasia, inflammatory cell infiltrate, mucous pooling, and pattern of malignant cell infiltration came out to be statistically significant with the highest percentage of changes being observed in poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma > moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma> well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma>oral epithelial dysplasia. Further, the results of this study suggest that extension of dysplasia or squamous cell carcinoma from overlying oral epithelium along salivary gland ducts is an uncommon finding. Conclusion: Hence, histopathological interpretation for OED and OSCC should also include changes related to associated minor salivary gland tissue as detection and eradication of the putative precursors are the best way of decreasing the overall morbidity caused by tumors.

OBJECTIVE: Gender determination is pivotal in establishing a biological profile of human remains, where fragments of the skull persist with unidentifiable dental arch data. Owing to the resistance and stability against external factors such as trauma and fractures, radiological assessment of the frontal sinus can be a useful indicator for sexual dimorphism. Keeping this in mind, a study was designed to analyse the efficacy of morphometric assessment of the frontal sinus for gender determination in the North Indian population. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A total of 300 (150 males and 150 females) lateral cephalograms of the age >20 years were retrieved. The frontal sinus index (ratio of maximum height to depth), area, and perimeter of the same were calculated using Adobe Photoshop software. The results obtained were further subjected to statistical analysis. RESULT AND CONCLUSION: The study yielded an accuracy rate of 75.3% for sex differentiation. The frontal sinus perimeter was a novel parameter which was utilised as a variable in the obtained discriminant equation for sex differentiation. Thus, this cost-effective technique might be useful as an adjunct to assess sexual dimorphism.

For progression of health care system, it has always been a challenge to the researchers for formulation to a type of advanced drug delivery system which will have less toxicity, targeted delivery and will be highly biodegradable. Nano science or nanotechnology has been validated to be a successful method as of targeting the drug to its active site be due to its special physicochemical properties and size thereby reducing the dose of administration, increasing bioavailability, and also reducing toxicity. Magnetic nanoparticles recently in few decades have proved as an effective advanced drug delivery system for its elevated magnetic responsiveness, biocompatibility, elevated targeted drug delivery effectiveness, etc. The drug can be easily targeted to active site by application of external magnetic field. Among the various elements, nanoparticles prepared with magnetically active iron oxide or other iron-based spinel oxide nanoparticles are widely used due to its high electrical resistivity, mechanical hardness, chemical stability, etc. Owing to their easy execution towards drug delivery application, extensive research has been carried out in this area. This review paper has summarized all recent modifications of iron-based magnetically active nanoparticle based drug delivery system along with their synthesis, characterization, and applications.

Introduction: Oral squamous carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most challenging global constraint and currently the third most common cancer in India. Malignant cells exhibit anomalous morphological characteristics like increased and abnormal mitosis which might suffice as a prognostic indicator. Skeletal muscles present in close approximation with the oral epithelium are often encountered by the tumor cells of OSCC which is an uncharted territory and might serve as a critical parameter in assessing the outcome of OSCC. Amalgamation of mitotic count and skeletal muscle invasion can put forward cogent paths in discerning the behavior of these lesions. Material & methods: A total of 60 histopathologically diagnosed cases of well, moderately and poorly-differentiated OSCC cases were obtained from the archives. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides were examined for Mitotic count and Skeletal muscle invasion. Results: There was a statistically significant increase in Mitotic count from well-differentiated to poorly-differentiated OSCC. Despite the statistically insignificant difference there was a distinct rise of skeletal muscle invasion from well-differentiated to poorly-differentiated OSCC. Conclusion: The rise in mitotic count with increasing grades of OSCC suggests an increase in their proliferation rate. Owing to the marked elevation of skeletal muscle invasion in higher grades of OSCC, we can assume it to be a reliable predictor of aggressiveness and outcome. Further studies with a uniform sample size and site specificity might help in solidifying their role in assessing the prognosis of OSCC.

The global data on the temporal tracking of the COVID-19 through wastewater surveillance needs to be comparatively evaluated to generate a proper and precise understanding of the robustness, advantages, and sensitivity of the wastewater-based epidemiological (WBE) approach. We reviewed the current state of knowledge based on several scientific articles pertaining to temporal variations in COVID-19 cases captured via viral RNA predictions in wastewater. This paper primarily focuses on analyzing the WBE-based temporal variation reported globally to check if the reported early warning lead-time generated through environmental surveillance is pragmatic or latent. We have compiled the geographical variations reported as lead time in various WBE reports to strike a precise correlation between COVID-19 cases and genome copies detected through wastewater surveillance, with respect to the sampling dates, separately for WASH and non-WASH countries. We highlighted sampling methods, climatic and weather conditions that significantly affected the concentration of viral SARS-CoV-2 RNA detected in wastewater, and thus the lead time reported from the various climatic zones with diverse WASH situations were different. Our major findings are: i) WBE reports around the world are not comparable, especially in terms of gene copies detected, lag-time gained between monitored RNA peak and outbreak/peak of reported case, as well as per capita RNA concentrations; ii) Varying sanitation facility and climatic conditions that impact virus degradation rate are two major interfering features limiting the comparability of WBE results, and iii) WBE is better applicable to WASH countries having well-connected sewerage system.

The terms composite and collision tumors have been used interchangeably throughout radiological literature. Both composite and collision tumors involve two morphologically and immunohistochemically distinct neoplasms coexisting within a single organ. However, collision tumors lack the histological cellular intermingling seen in composite tumors. Composite tumors often arise from a common driver mutation that induces a divergent histology from a common neoplastic source while collision tumors may arise from coincidental neoplastic change. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of abdominal composite and collision tumors by discussing hallmark radiographic and pathological presentations of rare hepatic, renal, and adrenal case studies. A better understanding of the presentation of each lesion is imperative for proper recognition, diagnosis, and management of these unique tumor presentations.
