RESUMO

Clay-amended barriers are widely used to prevent hazardous leachate percolation from landfill to subsurface. The performance of these barriers is mostly evaluated through numerical simulations with limited experimental investigation through leachate flushing experiments. To bridge this gap, contaminant loading and its flushing experiments were carried out to assess the performance of clay-amended composite materials as landfill liners. River sand (Sa), loamy soil (Ns), and alternative waste materials like fly ash (Fa) and flushed silt (Si) were used to prepare the composites. Composites fulfilling the hydraulic conductivity (<10-7 cm/s) and compressive strength (200 kPa) criteria were selected for contaminant loading and its flushing experiments to understand the fate of fluoride ions. The experimentally determined hydraulic conductivity (Ks) values for all the composites were in the order of 10-8 cm/s. The experimental breakthrough curves exhibited skewed shape, long tailing, and dual peaks. Dual porosity and dual permeability with immobile water models were employed to simulate these curves, revealing that preferential flow pathways and random chemical sorption sites significantly affect solute transport in clay-amended barriers. Further, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were employed to trace the preferred path of fluoride ions through the barrier. The removal efficiency and temporal moments were used to determine the percentage mass retained, mean arrival time, and spreading within the barrier. The highest solute mass was retained by sand-clay barrier (SaB30) (91%), followed by loam-clay barrier (NsB30) (59%), fly ash-clay barrier (FaB30) (38%), and silt-clay barrier (SiB30) (4%) with the least mass. The lowest mean arrival time was calculated for NsB30 (269 h) and the highest for SaB30 (990 h), with FaB30 (384 h) and SiB30 (512 h) having values in between. This study concludes that validating the design hypothesis of clay-amended barriers through contaminant loading and its flushing studies leads to an effective and sustainable design.

RESUMO

Recent research has underscored the diverse ways in which air pollution detrimentally affects child health in India. Notably, India shoulders one of the highest burdens of mortality of children under five years of age globally due to exposure to air pollution. Distinct mitigation strategies are vital to reduce air pollution exposure and its resultant health burdens among children in India when compared to strategies applicable in the global West. This necessity arises due to the substantial influence of residential combustion of solid fuels, and considerable disparities prevalent among India's population. Addressing these unique challenges requires widespread awareness, community engagement, and sustainable policies. As India embarked on a mission to reduce air pollution, showcasing health benefits linked to interventions is crucial. Augmenting access to health data is equally essential to bolster evidence-based policymaking aimed at reducing the child health burden stemming from air pollution in India.

While studies on ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure effect on child health are available, the differential effects, if any, of exposure to PM2.5 species are unexplored in lower and middle-income countries. Using multiple logistic regression, we showed that for every 10 µg m-3 increase in PM2.5 exposure, anaemia, acute respiratory infection, and low birth weight prevalence increase by 10% (95% uncertainty interval, UI: 9-11), 11% (8-13), and 5% (4-6), respectively, among children in India. NO3-, elemental carbon, and NH4+ were more associated with the three health outcomes than other PM2.5 species. We found that the total PM2.5 mass as a surrogate marker for air pollution exposure could substantially underestimate the true composite impact of different components of PM2.5. Our findings provide key indigenous evidence to prioritize control strategies for reducing exposure to more toxic species for greater child health benefits in India.

Due to the lack of timely data on socioeconomic factors (SES), little research has evaluated if socially disadvantaged populations are disproportionately exposed to higher PM2.5 concentrations in India. We fill this gap by creating a rich dataset of SES parameters for 28,081 clusters (villages in rural India and census-blocks in urban India) from the National Family and Health Survey (NFHS-4) using a precision-weighted methodology that accounts for survey-design. We then evaluated associations between total, anthropogenic and source-specific PM2.5 exposures and SES variables using fully-adjusted multilevel models. We observed that SES factors such as caste, religion, poverty, education, and access to various household amenities are important risk factors for PM2.5 exposures. For example, we noted that a unit standard deviation increase in the cluster-prevalence of Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class households was significantly associated with an increase in total-PM2.5 levels corresponding to 0.127 µg/m3 (95% CI 0.062 µg/m3, 0.192 µg/m3) and 0.199 µg/m3 (95% CI 0.116 µg/m3, 0.283 µg/m3, respectively. We noted substantial differences when evaluating such associations in urban/rural locations, and when considering source-specific PM2.5 exposures, pointing to the need for the conceptualization of a nuanced EJ framework for India that can account for these empirical differences. We also evaluated emerging axes of inequality in India, by reporting associations between recent changes in PM2.5 levels and different SES parameters.

Owing to their tolerance to antibiotics, bacterial biofilms continue to pose a threat to mankind and are leading cause for non-healing of burn wounds. Within the biofilm matrix, antibiotics become functionally inactive due to restricted penetration and enzymatic degradation leading to rise of antimicrobial resistance. The objective of present investigation was to develop and characterize levofloxacin (LFX) loaded clove oil nanoscale emulgel (LFX-NE gel) and evaluate its in vivo therapeutic efficacy in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm infected burn wound in mice. The optimized emulgel was found to possess good texture profile and showed shear thinning behavior. In vitro release study demonstrated complete drug release in 8 h and emulgel was found to be stable for 3 months at 25 °C and 40 °C. In vivo study revealed biofilm dispersal, complete wound closure, re-epithelialization and collagen deposition by LFX-NE gel in comparison to various control groups. LFX-NE gel was able to clear the infection within 7 days of treatment and promote wound healing as well. Therefore, administration of LFX-incorporated NE gel could be a beneficial treatment strategy for P. aeruginosa biofilm-infected burn wounds.

Phytoremediation potential of Lemna gibba was evaluated for chromium (Cr) and cadmium (Cd) under laboratory conditions for variable metal load of 1 mg/l, 3 mg/l, 5mgl, 7 mg/l and 9 mg/l, respectively, for 7 and 15 days of treatment period. Effects of both metals on structural attributes of L. gibba were also analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) study. The metal removal percentage by L. gibba for Cr metal was found in the range of 37.3% to 98.6% and for cadmium it was found within the range of 81.6% to 94.6%. Bio concentration factor (BCF) of L .gibba was observed within the range of 37 to 295 for Cr metal and for Cd metal it ranged from 237 to 1144, which shows that the plant is a hyper accumulator for Cd metal and moderate accumulator for Cr metal. Statistical analysis (Two-way ANOVA) was performed on experimental results to confirm the individual effect of metal concentration and treatment period as well as cumulative effect of both factors together on percentage metal removal and on BCF. Research studies indicated that with the progress of treatment period metal removal percentage increases but increasing metal load during experiment negatively co-relates the metal removal percentage and BCF.
