RESUMO

Soilless agriculture is acknowledged worldwide because it uses organic leftovers as a means of supporting intensive and efficient plant production. However, the quality of potting media deteriorates because of lower nutrient content and excessive shrinkage of most organic materials. A current study was undertaken to identify the optimal blend of locally available organic materials with desirable qualities for use as potting media. Therefore, different ingredients, viz., Pinus roxburghii needles, sugarcane bagasse, and farmyard manure were used alone or in combination as potting media to test their suitability by growing spinach as a test crop. Results showed that an increase in Pinus roxburghii needles and sugarcane bagasse decreased medium pH and electrical conductivity. Higher pH and electrical conductivity were recorded for the treatments having a higher farmyard manure ratio (≥50%) in combination. Except for pine needles 100%, pH and electrical conductivity were in the recommended range. The growth attributes include, leaves plant-1, shoot length, fresh- and dry shoot weight along with plant macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium) and micronutrients (iron, copper, manganese, and zinc) content were higher in treatment pine needles 50%+farmyard manure 50% followed by pine needles 25%+farmyard manure 50%+sugarcane bagasse 25%. Moreover, the particular treatment of pine needles 50%+farmyard manure 50% exhibited the highest concentrations of macro- (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) as well as micronutrients (iron, copper, manganese, and zinc) in the potting media following the harvest. This study highlights the potential of utilizing agro-industrial litter/waste as a soilless growing medium for spinach production under greenhouse conditions. When employed in appropriate proportions, this approach not only addresses disposal concerns but also proves effective for sustainable cultivation. Further research is needed to investigate the use of these wastes as potting media by mixing various particle-size ingredients.

Near-infrared (NIR) dyes have a unique ability to interact favorably with light in the NIR region, which is particularly interesting where stealth and camouflage are paramount, such as in military uniforms. Characterization of cotton fabric dyed with NIR-absorbing dyes using visible-NIR (Vis-NIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) hyperspectral imaging was done. The aim of the study was to discern spectral changes caused by variations in dye concentration and dyeing temperature as these parameters directly influence color- and crocking-fastness of fabrics impacting the camouflage effect. The fabric was dyed at three concentrations (2.5, 5, and 10%) and two dyeing temperatures (55 °C and 85 °C) and principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were performed on the spectra to discriminate the fabrics based on dye concentrations. The PCA models successfully segregated the fabrics based on the dye concentration and dyeing temperature, while PLS-DA models demonstrated classification accuracies between 75 and 100% in the Vis-NIR range. Spectra in the SWIR region could not be used to detect the differences in the concentrations of the NIR dyes. This finding is promising, as it aligns with the objective of creating NIR-dyed camouflage fabrics that remain indistinguishable under varying dye concentrations. These results open possibilities for further exploration in enhancing the stealth capabilities of textiles in military applications.

The banking sector serves as a nudge between increased financial investments and reduced environmental impacts in the modern era of sustainability thus, integrating the social, environmental, and economic dimensions. This paper aims to explore the practices and ongoing activities on account of sustainable banking which is being practised in the Pakistani Banking Sector. A mixed methods approach using a survey with a sample size of (n = 250) and in-depth interviews of (n = 25) provides significant evidence for the research. SmartPLS4.0 was used for hypotheses testing and to ascertain the path coefficient association within the constructs. This research fills the gap in existing literature by testing and implying the mediating role of Stakeholders' Influence on the relationship between Green Banking Practices and the Bank's Performance. The results of the quantitative analysis show a positive association between variables, highlighting the role of stakeholders and their need to partake efficiently, in the countrywide execution of green banking. The qualitative analysis portrays that; green banking is currently the partial focus of the banking sector in the developing economy of Pakistan whereas, approaches like financing green projects, investments in renewable energy, in-house greening of the banking sector, and provision of easy lending facilities to encourage and support environmental initiatives are some commonly practised accomplishments of the banking sector.

INTRODUCTION: Reduction quality is of paramount importance for an optimal outcome in unstable pertrochanteric fractures. The non-anatomical functional anteromedial buttress is proposed to prevent impending mechanical complications. We aimed to evaluate the role of anteromedial cortical support in preventing mechanical complications following fixation with the cephalomedullary nail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective, single-arm interventional study was conducted in the Orthopaedics Department of a Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Rawalpindi. The duration of the study was 24 months. Patients were recruited by the purposive sampling technique as per inclusion/exclusion criteria. Preoperatively, the reduction was categorized as per Baumgartner's and Chang's criteria. Post-operatively, weight bearing as tolerated was advised. Radiographs prior to discharge for loss of reduction were evaluated. Follow-up radiographic measurements of neck length, neck shaft angle, and their loss as per protocol were done at three and six months. RESULTS: A total of 202 patients were operated on from October 21 until August 23. Mortality at six months in 39 patients (19.3%) and loss to follow-up in 31 patients (15.3%) resulted in 132 patients with complete follow-up and having developed complications in 12 patients (9.09%). The mean age was 76.3 ± 7.98 years; males were 105 (79.5%), and females were 27 (20.5%). Closed reduction was 58 (43.9%), and additional manoeuvres were required in 74 (56.1%). The mean tip apex distance (TAD) was 24.56 ± 2.76, and the Calcar gap was 5.16 ± 1.27. Cleveland zone centre-centre in 54 (40.9%), inferior-centre in 65 (49.2%), and inferior-posterior (9.9%) were statistically significant for mechanical complications (p≤0.001). There was a significant association between the grading of Chang's and Baumgartner's poor groups for the development of mechanical complications (p≤0.001). The mean time to full weight bearing without support was 21 ± 1.22 weeks. The mean Hip Harris score at six months was 69.27 ± 7.68. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that anteromedial cortical support can lead to fewer potential mechanical complications at six months. A higher Chang's grade drives surgeons to engage in additional manoeuvres. Anteromedial cortical support is worth consideration for unstable pertrochanteric fractures.

Bioprinting has emerged as a successful method for fabricating engineered tissue implants, offering great potential for wound healing applications. This study focuses on an advanced surface-based slicing approach aimed at designing a skin implant specifically forin-situbioprinting. The slicing step plays a crucial role in determining the layering arrangement of the tissue during printing. By utilizing surface slicing, a significant shift from planar fabrication methods is achieved. The developed methodology involves the utilization of a customized robotic printer to deliver biomaterials. A multilayer slicing and toolpath generation procedure is presented, enabling the fabrication of skin implants that incorporate the epidermal, dermal, and hypodermal layers. One notable advantage of using the approximate representation of the native wound site surface as the slicing surface is the avoidance of planar printing effects such as staircasing. This surface slicing method allows for the design of non-planar and ultra-thin skin implants, ensuring a higher degree of geometric match between the implant and the wound interface. Furthermore, the proposed methodology demonstrates superior surface quality of thein-situbio-printed implant on a hand model, validating its ability to create toolpaths on implants with complex surfaces.

As the demand for alternative protein sources and nutritional improvement in baked goods grows, integrating legume-based ingredients, such as fava beans, into wheat flour presents an innovative alternative. This study investigates the potential of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) to predict the protein content (short-wave infrared (SWIR) range)) of fava bean-fortified bread and classify them based on their color characteristics (visible-near-infrared (Vis-NIR) range). Different multivariate analysis tools, such as principal component analysis (PCA), partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), and partial least square regression (PLSR), were utilized to assess the protein distribution and color quality parameters of bread samples. The result of the PLS-DA in the SWIR range yielded a classification accuracy of ˃99%, successfully classifying the samples based on their protein contents (low protein and high protein). The PLSR model showed an RMSEC of 0.086% and an RMSECV of 0.094%. Also, the external validation resulted in an RMSEP of 0.064%. The PLSR model possessed the capability to efficiently predict the protein content of the bread samples. The results suggest that HSI can be successfully used to classify bread samples based on their protein content and for the prediction of protein composition. Hyperspectral imaging can therefore be reliably implemented for the quality monitoring of baked goods in commercial bakeries.

The increased sensation error between the surroundings and the driver is a major problem in driving simulators, resulting in unrealistic motion cues. Intelligent control schemes have to be developed to provide realistic motion cues to the driver. The driver's body model incorporates the effects of vibrations on the driver's health, comfort, perception, and motion sickness, and most of the current research on motion cueing has not considered these factors. This article proposes a novel optimal motion cueing algorithm that utilizes the driver's body model in conjunction with the driver's perception model to minimize the sensation error. Moreover, this article employs H∞ control in place of the linear quadratic regulator to optimize the quadratic cost function of sensation error. As compared to state of the art, we achieve decreased sensation error in terms of small root-mean-square difference (70%, 61%, and 84% decrease in case of longitudinal acceleration, lateral acceleration, and yaw velocity, respectively) and improved coefficient of cross-correlation (3% and 1% increase in case of longitudinal and lateral acceleration, respectively).

L-asparaginase (L-ASNase) is a versatile anticancer and acrylamide reduction enzyme predominantly used in medical and food industries. However, the high specificity of L-asparaginase formulations for glutamine, low thermostability, and blood clearance are the major disadvantages. Present study describes production, characterization, and applications of glutaminase free extracellular L-asparaginase from indigenous Bacillus halotolerans ASN9 isolated from soil sample. L-asparaginase production was optimized in M9 medium (containing 0.2% sucrose and 1% L-asparagine) that yielded maximum L-ASNase with a specific activity of 256 U mg-1 at pH 6 and 37°C. L-asparaginase was purified through acetone precipitation and Sephadex G-100 column, yielding 48.9 and 24% recovery, respectively. Enzyme kinetics revealed a Vmax of 466 mM min-1 and Km of 0.097 mM. Purified L-ASNase showed no activity against glutamine. The purified glutaminase free L-ASNase has a molecular mass of 60 kDa and an optimum specific activity of 3083 U mg-1 at pH 7 and 37°C. The enzyme retains its activity and stability over a wide range of pH and temperature, in the presence of selected protein inhibitors (SDS, ß-mercaptoethanol), CoCl2, KCl, and NaCl. The enzyme also exhibited antioxidant activity against DPPH radical (IC50 value 70.7 µg mL-1) and anticancer activity against U87 human malignant glioma (IC50 55 µg mL-1) and Huh7 human hepatocellular carcinoma (IC50 37 µg mL-1) cell lines. Normal human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) had greater than 80% cell viability with purified L-ASNase indicating its least cytotoxicity against normal cells. The present work identified potent glutaminase free L-ASNase from B. halotolerans ASN9 that performs well in a wide range of environmental conditions indicating its suitability for various commercial applications.

Elastomers are known for their strain-rate-dependent properties not only to quasistatic but also to high strain rate deformations, where mechanical behavior is significantly affected by inertia. Concurrently, environmental changes, such as temperature and humidity variations, can impact their stress response to deformation. This study investigates the effects of material layers within neoprene samples on mitigating these environmental changes. While the presence of an intermediate layer proves effective against temperature and humidity influence, it fails to block the impact of increasing high strain rates. Moreover, the different humidity levels at room and elevated temperatures do not significantly alter the mechanical behavior of filled neoprene samples compared to pure neoprene. Notably, in unfilled neoprene, an increase in humidity levels, other than an absolutely dry environment, leads to a notable stress level rise at room temperature, while under elevated temperature conditions, there is a significant stress decrease with increasing humidity. However, neoprene filled with polyester/cotton or nylon displays resilience to diminishing mechanical behavior under various temperature and humidity regulations, indicating that the material layer within these samples effectively "protects" the rubbers from potential stress lapses observed in unfilled neoprene. While a high strain rate compression affects the behavior of the filled variants significantly, increasing humidity and temperature have minimal impact on their stress levels. These findings offer valuable insights into the dynamic responses of elastomers to environmental changes, highlighting the advantages of using filled rubbers in diverse applications.

Aerosols have a severe impact on the Earth's climate, human health, and ecosystem. To understand the impacts of aerosols on climate, human health, and the ecosystem we must need to understand the variability of aerosols and their optical properties. Therefore, we used Aqua-MODIS retrieved aerosol optical depth (AOD) (550 nm) and Angstrom exponent (AE) (440/870) data to analyze the Spatio-temporal seasonal variability of aerosols and their relationship with different meteorological parameters over Pakistan from 2002 to 2021. High (>0.5) AOD values were observed during the summer season and low (<0.8) in the spring season. AE values were observed to be high (>1) in the northern regions of Pakistan indicating the dominance of fine mode particles during the winter season. Moreover, AOD showed a positive correlation with Relative Humidity (RH), Evapotranspiration, Wind speed (WS), and Temperature. On the other hand, it showed a negative correlation with Soil moisture (SM), Normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and precipitation over Pakistan. Therefore, considering the outcomes of this study will help policymakers to understand the spatiotemporal variability of aerosols and their seasonal correlation with different meteorological parameters.

In the Internet of things (IoT), data packets are accumulated and disseminated across IoT devices without human intervention, therefore the privacy and security of sensitive data during transmission are crucial. For this purpose, multiple routing techniques exist to ensure security and privacy in IoT Systems. One such technique is the routing protocol for low power and lossy networks (RPL) which is an IPv6 protocol commonly used for routing in IoT systems. Formal modeling of an IoT system can validate the reliability, accuracy, and consistency of the system. This paper presents the formal modeling of RPL protocol and the analysis of its security schemes using colored Petri nets that applies formal validation and verification for both the secure and non-secure modes of RPL protocol. The proposed approach can also be useful for formal modeling-based verification of the security of the other communication protocols.

This study investigates the influence of temperature and loading rate on the Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture behavior of carbon-nanotubes-enhanced carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CNT-CFRP). CNT-induced toughening of the epoxy matrix is characterized by producing CFRP with varying loading of CNT areal density. CNT-CFRP samples were subjected to varying loading rates and testing temperatures. Fracture surfaces of CNT-CFRP were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging. Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness increased with increasing amount of CNT to an optimum value of 1 g/m2, then decreased at higher CNT amounts. Moreover, it was found that CNT-CFRP fracture toughness increased linearly with the loading rate in Mode I and Mode II. On the other hand, different responses to changing temperature were observed; Mode I fracture toughness increased when elevating the temperature, while Mode II fracture toughness increased with increasing up to room temperature and decreased at higher temperatures.

It is generally believed that fiscal decentralization is an essential way to increase the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the government through the transfer of financial autonomy to the local governments. On the same lines, this study attempts to confabulate the influence of two important economic indicators, (i) fiscal decentralization and (ii) natural resource rent in validation of the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis. Our current analysis is grounded upon a developing economy - China - and will serve as a stepping stone for the similar economies. The time period for the empirical estimation is from 1990 to 2020. The study applied an advanced econometrics approach, called the quantile autoregressive distributed lag (QARDL), which has many advantages as compared to any conventional approach. The empirical outcomes, after estimations, illustrate that in the long run, FDE is having an unfavorable connotation with CO2 emissions. NRR is another essential factor influencing the CO2 emissions in the long run in the selected economy. The estimated outcomes are revealing the presence of the EKC. Furthermore, the present research elucidates the existence of the bi-directional causality between selected economic indicators, FDE and CO2 emissions, and GDP square and CO2 emissions. But there is a unidirectional causality between GDP and CO2 emissions. Thus, policymakers should encourage the transfer of powers to the lower tiers of government to ameliorate environmental quality in the Chinese economy.

We have previously reported that the α1 subunit of sodium-potassium adenosine triphosphatase (Na/K-ATPase), acts as a receptor and an amplifier for reactive oxygen species, in addition to its distinct pumping function. On this background, we speculated that the blockade of Na/K-ATPase-induced ROS amplification with a specific peptide, pNaKtide, might attenuate the development of steatohepatitis. To test this hypothesis, pNaKtide was administered to a murine model of NASH: the C57Bl6 mouse fed a "western" diet containing high amounts of fat and fructose. The administration of pNaKtide reduced obesity as well as hepatic steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis. Of interest, we also noted a marked improvement in mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation, insulin sensitivity, dyslipidemia and aortic streaking in this mouse model. To further elucidate the effects of pNaKtide on atherosclerosis, similar studies were performed in ApoE knockout mice also exposed to the western diet. In these mice, pNaKtide not only improved steatohepatitis, dyslipidemia, and insulin sensitivity but also ameliorated significant aortic atherosclerosis. Collectively, this study demonstrates that the Na/K-ATPase/ROS amplification loop contributes significantly to the development and progression of steatohepatitis and atherosclerosis. Furthermore, this study presents a potential treatment, the pNaKtide, for the metabolic syndrome phenotype.

Climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic have disrupted the food supply chain across the globe and adversely affected food security. Early estimation of staple crops can assist relevant government agencies to take timely actions for ensuring food security. Reliable crop type maps can play an essential role in monitoring crops, estimating yields, and maintaining smooth food supplies. However, these maps are not available for developing countries until crops have matured and are about to be harvested. The use of remote sensing for accurate crop-type mapping in the first few weeks of sowing remains challenging. Smallholder farming systems and diverse crop types further complicate the challenge. For this study, a ground-based survey is carried out to map fields by recording the coordinates and planted crops in respective fields. The time-series images of the mapped fields are acquired from the Sentinel-2 satellite. A deep learning-based long short-term memory network is used for the accurate mapping of crops at an early growth stage. Results show that staple crops, including rice, wheat, and sugarcane, are classified with 93.77% accuracy as early as the first four weeks of sowing. The proposed method can be applied on a large scale to effectively map crop types for smallholder farms at an early stage, allowing the authorities to plan a seamless availability of food.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne flaviviral serious febrile illness, most common in the tropical and subtropical regions including Pakistan. Vitamin D is a strong immunomodulator affecting both the innate and adaptive immune responses and plays a pivotal role in pathogen-defense mechanisms. There has been considerable interest in the possible role of vitamin D in dengue viral (DENV) infection. In the present prospective cross-sectional study, we assessed a possible association between serum vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and susceptibility towards severe dengue fever (DF) illness. Serum vitamin D levels were measured at the time of hospitalization in 97 patients diagnosed with dengue fever (DF), dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS) at Mayo Hospital, King Edward Medical University, Lahore, PK, from 16 November 2021 to 15 January 2022. In terms of disease severity, 37 (38.1%) patients were DF, 52 (53.6%) were DHF grade 1 and 2, and 8 (8.2%) were DSS. The results revealed that most patients (75 (77.3%)) were vitamin-D-deficient (i.e., serum level < 20 ng/mL), including 27 (73.0%) in DF, 41 (78.8%) in DHF grade 1 and 2, and 7 (87.5%) in DSS. The degree of VDD was somewhat higher in DSS patients as compared to DF and DHF grade 1 and 2 patients. Overall, serum vitamin D levels ranged from 4.2 to 109.7 ng/mL, and the median (IQR) was in the VDD range, i.e., 12.2 (9.1, 17.8) ng/mL. Our results suggest that there may be a possible association between VDD and susceptibility towards severe dengue illness. Hence, maintaining sufficient vitamin D levels in the body either through diet or supplementation may help provide adequate immune protection against severe dengue fever illness. Further research is warranted.

METHODS: A survey regarding burnout and wellness was distributed to psychiatric Program Directors through the email listserv of the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT). RESULTS: The survey response rate was 273 responses out of 880 members surveyed (31%). The majority of respondents were current residency or fellowship Program Directors or Associate Program Directors or had another current educational role (93%, 227/245). Almost half of current Program Directors or Associate Program Directors reported feeling burned out almost daily or once a week (44%, 93/210). These Program Directors reported a desire to resign (77%), experienced discrimination within the past 5 years (66%), and struggled with finding meaning in their job (44%). The most frequently endorsed contributors to burnout were increasing administrative burden and insufficient support. CONCLUSIONS: The survey findings confirm that burnout characteristics are common among respondents, associated with a desire to resign and a struggle to find meaning in the highly demanding position of Program Director or Associate Program Director. Advocacy for resources, decreased administrative overload, and increased protected time would enhance well-being in Program Directors. Most striking was the frequency of discrimination reported and its relationship to burnout. Departments may benefit from a careful review of policies, procedures, and training to decrease hostile workplaces for women, international medical graduate, and under-represented in medicine Program Directors.

Background and Aims: Climate is an important parameter in delimiting coarse-grained aspects of fundamental ecological niches of species; evolution of these niches has been considered a key component in biological diversification. We assessed phylogenetic niche conservatism and evolution in 24 species of the family Oleaceae in relation to temperature and precipitation variables. We studied niches of 17 Olea species and 7 species from other genera of Oleaceae globally. Methods: We used nuclear ribosomal and plastid DNA to reconstruct an evolutionary tree for the family. We used an approach designed specifically to incorporate uncertainty and incomplete knowledge of species' ecological niche limits. We performed parsimony- and likelihood-based reconstructions of ancestral states on two independent phylogenetic hypotheses for the family. After detailed analysis, species' niches were classified into warm and cold niches, wet and dry niches, and broad and narrow niches. Key Results: Given that full estimates of fundamental niches are difficult, we explore the alternative approach of explicit incorporation of knowledge of gaps in the information available, which allows avoidance of overestimation of amounts of evolutionary change. The result is a first synthetic view of evolutionary dynamics of ecological niches and distributional potential in a widespread plant family. Temperate regions of the Earth were occupied only by lineages that could derive with cold and dry niches; Southeast Asia held species with warm and wet niches; and parts of Africa held only species with dry niches. Conclusions: High temperature in Lutetian (Oligocene) and low temperature in Rupelian (Eocene) with major desertification events play important role for niche retraction and expansion in the history for Oleaceae clades. Associations between environmental niche characteristics and phylogeny reconstruction play an important role in understanding ecological niche conservatism, the overall picture was relatively slow or conservative niche evolution in this group.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) like many other infectious diseases has a strong relationship with climatic parameters. METHODS: The present study has been carried out on the newly diagnosed sputum smear-positive pulmonary TB cases reported to National TB Control Program across Pakistan from 2007 to 2020. In this study, spatial and temporal distribution of the disease was observed through detailed district wise mapping and clustered regions were also identified. Potential risk factors associated with this disease depending upon population and climatic variables, i.e. temperature and precipitation were also identified. RESULTS: Nationwide, the incidence rate of TB was observed to be rising from 7.03% to 11.91% in the years 2007-2018, which then started to decline. However, a declining trend was observed after 2018-2020. The most populous provinces, Punjab and Sindh, have reported maximum number of cases and showed a temporal association as the climatic temperature of these two provinces is higher with comparison to other provinces. Machine learning algorithms Maxent, Support Vector Machine (SVM), Environmental Distance (ED) and Climate Space Model (CSM) predict high risk of the disease with14.02%, 24.75%, 34.81% and 43.89% area, respectively. CONCLUSION: SVM has a higher significant probability of prediction in the diseased area with a 1.86 partial receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) value as compared with other models.
