RESUMO

The improvement of food labeling can improve consumers' health awareness, reduce the burden of chronic diseases on the health and economy, and promote the development of the healthy food industry. Disease Risk Reduction Claim has been developed in European Union and the U.S. for over 20 years, with mature management methods and experience, but it is still lacking in China. Learning and drawing on the international management experience of food disease risk reduction claims can assist China to establish food disease risk reduction claims and improve the food health claims and labeling system.

RESUMO

Magnetism of Cu2(OH)3Br single crystals based on a triangular lattice is studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, pulsed-field magnetization, and specific heat measurements. There are two inequivalent Cu2+ sites in an asymmetric unit. Both Cu2+ sublattices undergo a long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at [Formula: see text] K. Upon cooling, an anisotropy crossover from Heisenberg to XY behavior is observed below 7.5 K from the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. The magnetic field applied within the XY plane induces a spin-flop transition of Cu2+ ions between 4.9 T and 5.3 T. With further increasing fields, the magnetic moment is gradually increased but is only about half of the saturation of a Cu2+ ion even in 30 T. The individual reorientation of the inequivalent Cu2+ spins under field is proposed to account for the magnetization behavior. The observed spin-flop transition is likely related to one Cu site, and the AFM coupling among the rest Cu spins is so strong that the 30 T field cannot overcome the anisotropy. The temperature dependence of the magnetic specific heat, which is well described by a sum of two gapped AFM contributions, is a further support for the proposed scenario.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Evidence shows that tocotrienols potentially reverse various chronic disease progressions caused by the metabolic syndrome. We aimed to investigate the acute effects of a single-dose supplementation of gamma and delta tocotrienols (γδ-T3, 1:4 ratio) compared with those in placebo on the insulinemic, anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombogenic responses in metabolic syndrome subjects. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Thirty metabolic syndrome subjects (15 men and 15 women) were recruited to a randomized, double-blinded and crossover study. The subjects were administered a single dose of 200 mg or 400 mg γδ-T3 emulsions or placebo incorporated into a glass of strawberry-flavored milkshake, consumed together with a high-fat muffin. Blood samples were collected at 0, 5, 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, 300 and 360 min after meal intake. RESULTS: Plasma vitamin E levels reflected the absorption of γδ-T3 after treatments. Postprandial changes in serum C-peptide, serum insulin, plasma glucose, triacylglycerol, non-esterified fatty acid and adiponectin did not differ between treatments, with women displaying delayed increase in the aforementioned markers. No significant difference between treatments was observed for plasma cytokines (interleukin-1 beta, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha) and thrombogenic markers (plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 and D-dimer). CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation of a single dose of γδ-T3 did not change the insulinemic, anti-inflammatory and anti-thrombogenic responses in metabolic syndrome subjects.

RESUMO

Food components with the ability to suppress preadipocyte proliferation and intracellular lipid accumulation may be helpful in the prevention of obesity, which is a worldwide health concern. Casein glycomacropeptide (GMP), which has pronounced gastric inhibitory activity, could potentially possess fat synthesis inhibition properties and an obesity-alleviating capacity. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of GMP on the proliferation and differentiation of preadipocytes as well as triglyceride accumulation and glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity in preadipocytes isolated from Sprague-Dawley rats. Different dosages (0, 0.31, 0.625, 1.25, 2.5, and 5.0 mg/mL) of GMP were co-incubated with preadipocytes. The proliferation activity of preadipocytes significantly decreased in the GMP-treated group compared with that of the control group without GMP supplementation. The GMP exhibited an inhibitory effect against preadipocyte proliferation in a dose-dependent manner; the maximal antiproliferative effect was obtained with 2.5 mg/mL. The GMP also attenuated differentiation, as revealed by decreased lipid content, and the effect was more pronounced when cells were treated with GMP before or at the beginning of differentiation induction than at later stages of cell differentiation. Cultured preadipocytes treated with GMP accumulated fewer triglycerides and had lower glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase activity than did the control cells without GMP supplementation. In conclusion, GMP can inhibit the proliferation, differentiation, and lipid accumulation of preadipocytes in vitro.
