RESUMO

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have attracted considerable attention in a diverse array of applications due to the breadth of possible property suites relative to other low-dimensional nanomaterials (e.g., graphene, aluminosilicates). Here, we demonstrate an alternative methodology for the exfoliation of bulk crystallites of group V-VII layered TMDs under quiescent, benchtop conditions using mild redox chemistry. Anionic polyoxometalate species generated from edge sites adsorb to the TMD surface and create Coulombic repulsion that drives layer separation without the use of shear forces. This method is generalizable (MS2, MSe2, and MTe2) and effective in preparing high-concentration (>1 mg/mL) dispersions with narrow layer thickness distributions more rapidly and with safer reagents than alternative solution-based approaches. Finally, exfoliation of these TMDs is demonstrated in a range of solvent systems that were previously inaccessible due to large surface energy differences. These characteristics could be beneficial in the preparation of high-quality films and monoliths.

The stability of polymer thin films is crucial to a broad range of technologies, including sensors, energy storage, filtration, and lithography. Recently, the demonstration of rapid deposition on solid substrates of ordered monolayers of polymer grafted nanoparticles (PGN) has increased potential for inks to additively manufacture such components. Herein, enhanced stability against dewetting of these self-assembled PGN films (gold nanoparticle functionalized with polystyrene (AuNP-PS)) is discussed in context to linear polystyrene (PS) analogues using high throughput surface gradients: surface energy (20-45 mN/m) and temperature (90-160 °C). PGNs exhibit a lower surface (γp) and interfacial (γsp) energy relative to linear polymers, which results in increased thermal and energetic stability by 10-25 °C and 5-15 mN/m, respectively. This enhanced wetting-dewetting transition is qualitatively consistent with the behavior of star macromolecules and depends on the architecture of the polymer canopy. Increased film stability through canopy architecture expands the manufacturability of thin film hybrids and refines postprocessing conditions to maximize local PGN order.

A functionalized fluorescent conjugated polymer, tolylterpyridine poly(p-phenyleneethynylene-thienyleneethynylene (ttp-PPETE), was designed and synthesized to detect trace amounts of toxic transition metal pollutants in ground water. Photophysical studies in tetrahydrofuran (THF) successfully demonstrated this polymer as a selective and sensitive chemosensor for Ni(2+) and Co(2+) in aqueous solution. Solid state composites of these chemosensors have now been prepared which can be modified to provide for inexpensive and portable field based chemical detection. A solid composite of ttp-PPETE, blended with poly (methyl methacrylate) shows UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectra which are red- shifted when compared to solution phase spectra, suggesting an increase in conjugation in the solid state. An additional absorption peak, not present in solution, is also observed in the solid state. The presence of this new peak provides evidence of interacting FCP chains in the solid state. Concentration dependent experiments were done on the solid composite showing red-shifted emission peaks accompanied by a significant reduction in the fluorescent quantum yield. These observations are consistent with the formation of aggregated polymer species in the solid state. Intermolecular interactions of this type can be manipulated in the design of sensitive and selective solid state fluorescent conjugated polymer sensors.
