RESUMO

Two novel species within the family Dictyosporiaceae are described and illustrated from terrestrial habitats on dead culms of bamboo and an unidentified plant, respectively. Through morphological comparisons and the multi-locus phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS, SSU, and tef1-α sequence dataset, two species, Gregaritheciumbambusicola, Pseudocoleophomaparaphysoidea are identified. Phylogenetically, both species clustered into a monophyletic clade with strong bootstrap support. Gregaritheciumbambusicola sp. nov. can be distinguished from other species within the genus based on its almost straight ascospores. Pseudocoleophomaparaphysoidea sp. nov. differs from other species in its conidiogenous cells intermixed with paraphyses, longer conidiogenous cells and larger conidia. The identification of this lineage contributes to our understanding of the classification of Dictyosporiaceae.

Seed rain and the soil seed bank represent the dispersal of seeds in space and time, respectively, and can be important sources of recruitment of new individuals during plant community regeneration. However, the temporal dynamics of seed rain and the mechanisms by which the seed rain and soil seed bank may play a role in plant community regeneration with increased grazing disturbance remain unclear. Seed rain, soil seed bank, aboveground vegetation, and rodent density were sampled along a grazing gradient in an alpine marsh on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. We described the temporal dynamics of seed dispersal using Bayesian generalized mixed models, and nonmetric multidimensional scaling and the structural equation model were used to examine the effects of grazing disturbance on the relative role of seed rain and soil seed bank on aboveground plant community regeneration. The temporal dynamics of seed rain changed from a unimodal to a bimodal pattern with increased grazing disturbance. Both species diversity and seed density of the seed rain and seed bank increased significantly with increased grazing disturbance. Increased grazing disturbance indirectly increased the similarity of composition between seed rain, seed bank, and aboveground plant community by directly increasing species diversity and abundance of aboveground plant community. However, increased grazing disturbance also indirectly decreased the similarity of seed rain, soil seed bank, and aboveground plant community by directly increasing rodent density. The similarity between seed rain and aboveground plant community was greater than that of the soil seed bank and aboveground plant community with increased grazing disturbance. Grazing disturbance spreads the risk of seed germination and seedling establishment by changing the temporal dynamics of seed dispersal. Plants (positive) and rodents (negative) mediated the role of seed rain and soil seed bank in plant community regeneration. The role of seed rain in plant community regeneration is higher than the seed bank in disturbed alpine marshes. Our findings increase our understanding of the regeneration process of the plant community, and they provide valuable information for the conservation and restoration of alpine marsh ecosystems.

While designing anisotropic noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) can enhance the signal intensity of Raman dyes, more sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) probes can be designed by oriented self-assembly of noble metal nanomaterials into dimers or higher-order nanoclusters. In this study, we engineered a self-assembly strategy in living cells for real-time fluorescence and SERS dual-channel detection of intracellular microRNAs (miRNAs), using Mg2+-dependent 8-17E DNAzyme sequences as the driving motors, gold nanocubes (AuNCs) as the driver components, and three-branched double-stranded DNA as the linking tool. The assembly selects adenine in DNA as a reporter molecule, simplifying the labeling process of Raman reporter molecules and reducing the synthesis process. In addition, adenine is stably distributed between the faces of AuNCs and the wide hotspot region gives good reproducibility of the adenine SERS signal. In this strategy, the SERS channel was consistently stable and more sensitive compared to the fluorescence channel. Among them, the detection limit of the SERS channel was 2.1 pM and the coefficient of variation was 1.26% in the in vitro liquid phase and 1.49% in MCF-7 cells. The strategy successfully achieved accurate tracking and quantification of miRNA-21 in cancer cells, showing good reproducibility in complex samples as well as cells. The reported strategy provides ideas for exploring intracellular specific triggering of nanoparticles for precise control of self-assembly.

During an investigation of lignicolous freshwater fungi in the Tibetan Plateau, three Aquapteridospora taxa were collected from freshwater habitats in Xizang, China. The new species possess polyblastic, sympodial, denticles conidiogenous cells and fusiform, septate, with or without sheath conidial, that fit within the generic concept of Aquapteridospora, and multi-gene phylogeny placed these species within Aquapteridospora. Detailed morphological observations clearly demarcate three of these from extant species and are hence described as new taxa. The multi-gene phylogeny of the combined LSU, TEF1-α, and ITS sequence data to infer phylogenetic relationships and discuss phylogenetic affinities with morphologically similar species. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses, three new species viz. A.linzhiensis, A.yadongensis, and A.submersa are introduced. Details of asexual morphs are described, and justifications for establishing these new species are also provided in this study.

Bletilla striata polysaccharide (BSP) and chitosan (CS) were chemically cross-linked using oxalyl chloride to prepare a composite hemostatic sponge (BSP-CS), and the process parameters were optimized using the Box-Behnken design (BBD) with response surface methodology. To optimize the performance of the hemostatic sponge, we adjusted the ratio of independent variables, the amount of oxalyl chloride added, and the freeze-dried volume. A series of evaluations were conducted on the hemostatic applicability of BSP-CS. The characterization results revealed that BSP-CS had a stable bacteriostatic effect on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa within 72 h, and the bacteriostatic rate was above 30%. The CCK-8 cytotoxicity test demonstrated that BSP-CS had a certain effect on promoting cell proliferation of L929 cells. In the mouse tail-cutting experiment, the hemostasis time of BSP-CS was 463.0±38.16 s, shortened by 91.3 s on average compared with 554.3±34.67 s of the gauze group. The blood loss of the BSP-CS group was 28.47±3.74 mg, which was 34.7% lower than that of the control gauze group (43.6±3.83 mg). In the in vitro coagulation experiment, the in vitro coagulation index of the BSP-CS group was 97.29%±1.8%, which was reduced to 8.6% of the control group. The CT value of the BSP-CS group was 240±15 s, which was 155 s lower than that of the gauze group (355±31.22 s). All characterization results indicate that BSP-CS is an excellent hemostatic material.

Influenza A epidemics, which occur annually in varying degrees worldwide, is a global challenge to healthcare facilities owing to several limitations of the current detection methods. Therefore, the development of a rapid, convenient, and economical method for the early diagnosis of influenza A will aid clinical treatment and epidemic control. Currently, most of the commonly used clinical rapid tests utilize colloidal gold test strips that detect specific influenza virus antigens but are limited by low sensitivity. Therefore, this study combined catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) with colloidal gold immunochromatographic assay (GICA) to develop a highly sensitive and visual CHA-GICA test strip. Clinical sample analysis revealed that the sensitivity of the assay was 81.8% and 74% under optimal (35 °C) and room temperature (25 °C) conditions, respectively. In conclusion, this study developed a rapid nucleic acid assay for detecting influenza A virus with high sensitivity and specificity, which can improve the clinical detection of influenza A.

Breast cancer is a highly prevalent malignancy worldwide among women with an increasing incidence in recent years. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a specific type of breast cancer, occurs primarily in young women and exhibits large tumor size, high clinical stage, and extremely poor prognosis with a high rate of lymph node, liver, and lung metastases. TNBC is insensitive to endocrine therapy and trastuzumab treatment, and there is an urgent need for effective therapeutics and treatment guidelines. However, investigations into antiangiogenic agents for the treatment of TNBC are ongoing. In this study, we successfully engineered a self-assembled protein nanocarrier TfRBP9-hVEGI-192-ELP fusion protein (TVEFP) to deliver the therapeutic protein, human vascular endothelial growth inhibitor (hVEGI-192). This was found to be effective in inhibiting tumor angiogenesis in vivo. The protein nanocarrier effectively inhibited the progression of TNBC in vivo and showed the behavior of self-assembly, thermoresponsiveness, enzyme stimulation-responsiveness, tumor-targeting, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Near-infrared imaging studies showed that fluorescent dye-stained TVEFP effectively aggregated at the tumor site. The TVEFP nanocarrier significantly expands the application of the therapeutic protein hVEGI-192 and improves the imaging and biotherapeutic effects in TNBC, chiefly based on anti-angiogenesis effects.

AIM: The aim of this study was to summarise the overall picture of thirst-related research in patients with heart failure. DESIGN: We conducted a scoping review following the Arskey and O'Malley methodological framework along with the PAGER framework. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Jonna Briggs Institute, ProQuest Database, Google Scholar, PsycINFO, PQDT, CNKI, Wan Fang, VIP and CBM. Additionally, grey literature including grey databases (Opengrey, OpenDoar, Openaire and BASEL Bielefeld Academic Search Engine), conferences or articles (Scopus and Microsoft Academic), graduate theses databases (eTHOS, DART Europe, Worldcat and EBSCO Open Dissertations) and government information media (UK guidance and regulations, USA government websites, EU Bookshop and UN official publications) were searched. The databases were searched from inception to 18 August 2022 for Articles written in English and Chinese. Two researchers independently screened articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and a third researcher adjudicated disagreements. RESULTS: We retrieved 825 articles, of which 26 were included. Three themes were summarised from these articles: (a) the incidence of thirst in patients with heart failure; (b) the thirst-related factors in patients with heart failure; and (c) the intervention measures of thirst in patients with heart failure.

Ever since the catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) circuit has been highlighted as a powerful nucleic acid detection tool, nucleic acid detection methods based on CHA have been widely studied. However, the detection sensitivity of CHA-based methods is insufficient. The relatively high background signals resulting from the spontaneous reaction between the two hairpin probes is one of the major reasons for limiting the sensitivity of CHA. In this study, we established that the addition of deoxynucleotide triphosphates (dNTPs) to the reaction system can significantly reduce the background leakage of CHA. The dNTPs-CHA, coupled with a fluorescence lateral flow assay strip, is used for the rapid and highly sensitive detection of miRNA. It is capable of reliably detecting miRNA in serum samples down to a limit of 100 aM, which is an improvement in the lower detection limit by nearly five orders of magnitude compared to that of the pure CHA.

Accurately identifying multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria from clinical samples has long been a challenge. Herein, we report a simple and programmable dual-mode aptasensor called DAPT to reliably detect MDR bacteria. The DAPT method comprises two elements, namely the mode of dynamic light scattering (Mode-DLS) for ultrasensitive detection and the mode of fluorescence (Mode-Flu) for reliable quantification as a potent complement. Benefiting from the states of aptamer-modified gold nanoparticles (AptGNPs) sensitively changing from dispersion to aggregation, the proposed Mode-DLS achieved the rapid, specific, and ultrasensitive detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) at the limit of detection (LOD) of 4.63 CFU mL-1 in a proof-of-concept experiment. Simultaneously, the Mode-Flu ensured the accuracy of the detection, especially at a high concentration of bacteria. Moreover, the feasibility and universality of the DAPT platform was validated with four other superbugs by simply reprogramming the corresponding sequence. Overall, the proposed DAPT method based on a dual-mode aptasensor can provide a universal platform for the rapid and ultrasensitive detection of pathogenic bacteria due to its superior programmability.

The timing of phenological events is highly sensitive to climate change, and may influence ecosystem structure and function. Although changes in flowering phenology among species under climate change have been reported widely, how species-specific shifts will affect phenological synchrony and community-level phenology patterns remains unclear. We conducted a manipulative experiment of warming and precipitation addition and reduction to explore how climate change affected flowering phenology at the species and community levels in an alpine meadow on the eastern Tibetan Plateau. We found that warming advanced the first and last flowering times differently and with no consistent shifts in flowering duration among species, resulting in the entire flowering period of species emerging earlier in the growing season. Early-flowering species were more sensitive to warming than mid- and late-flowering species, thereby reducing flowering synchrony among species and extending the community-level flowering season. However, precipitation and its interactions with warming had no significant effects on flowering phenology. Our results suggest that temperature regulates flowering phenology from the species to community levels in this alpine meadow community, yet how species shifted their flowering timing and duration in response to warming varied. This species-level divergence may reshape flowering phenology in this alpine plant community. Decreasing flowering synchrony among species and the extension of community-level flowering seasons under warming may alter future trophic interactions, with cascading consequences to community and ecosystem function.

Ureaplasma urealyticum is a common genital mycoplasma in men and women, which can cause reproductive tract infection and infertility, and is also related to adverse pregnancy outcomes and neonatal diseases. Pathogen culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are the main methods for the diagnosis of U. urealyticum. However, pathogen culture takes too long, and PCR requires professional personnel and sophisticated instruments. Here, we report a simple, convenient, sensitive, and specific detection method, which combines catalytic hairpin assembly with a lateral flow immunoassay strip. Only a water bath and a fluorescence reader are needed to detect the results in 30 min. We can realize the point-of-care testing of U. urealyticum by this method. To verify this method, we selected 10 clinical samples for testing, and the test results were exactly the same as the clinical report.

Aiming at the problem that the rubber tapping robot finds it difficult to accurately detect the tapped area and locate the new tapping line for natural rubber trees due to the influence of the rubber plantation environment during the rubber tapping operation, this study proposes a method for detecting the tapped area and locating the new tapping line for natural rubber trees based on the improved mask region convolutional neural network (Mask RCNN). First, Mask RCNN was improved by fusing the attention mechanism into the ResNeXt, modifying the anchor box parameters, and adding a tiny fully connected layer branch into the mask branch to realize the detection and rough segmentation of the tapped area. Then, the fine segmentation of the existing tapping line was realized by combining edge detection and logic operation. Finally, the existing tapping line was moved down a certain distance along the center line direction of the left and right edge lines of the tapped area to obtain the new tapping line. The tapped area detection results of 560 test images showed that the detection accuracy, segmentation accuracy, detection average precision, segmentation average precision, and intersection over union values of the improved Mask RCNN were 98.23%, 99.52%, 99.6%, 99.78%, and 93.71%, respectively. Compared with other state-of-the-art approaches, the improved Mask RCNN had better detection and segmentation performance, which could better detect and segment the tapped area of natural rubber trees under different shooting conditions. The location results of 560 new tapping lines under different shooting conditions showed that the average location success rate of new tapping lines was 90% and the average location time was 0.189 s. The average values of the location errors in the x and y directions were 3 and 2.8 pixels, respectively, and the average value of the total location error was 4.5 pixels. This research not only provides a location method for the new tapping line for the rubber tapping robot but also provides theoretical support for the realization of rubber tapping mechanization and automation.

Botryosphaeriales is an important order of diverse fungal pathogens, saprobes, and endophytes distributed worldwide. Recent studies of Botryosphaeriales in China have discovered a broad range of species, some of which have not been formerly described. In this study, 60 saprobic isolates were obtained from decaying woody hosts in southwestern China. The isolates were compared with other species using morphological characteristics, and available DNA sequence data was used to infer phylogenetic analyses based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), large subunit rRNA gene (LSU), and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef) loci. Three novel species were illustrated and described as Botryobambusa guizhouensis, Sardiniella elliptica, and Sphaeropsis guizhouensis, which belong to rarely identified genera within Botryosphaeriaceae. Botryobambusa guizhouensis is the second species identified from the respective monotypic genus. The previously known species were identified as Aplosporella hesperidica, Barriopsis tectonae, Botryosphaeria dothidea, Diplodia mutila, Di. neojuniperi, Di. pseudoseriata, Di. sapinea, Di. seriata, Dothiorella sarmentorum, Do. yunnana, Lasiodiplodia pseudotheobromae, Neofusicoccum parvum, Sardiniella celtidis, Sa. guizhouensis, and Sphaeropsis citrigena. The results of this study indicate that numerous species of Botryosphaeriales are yet to be revealed in southwestern China.

Arthrinium has a widespread distribution occurring in various substrates (e.g., air, soil debris, plants, lichens, marine algae and even human tissues). It is characterized by the basauxic conidiogenesis in the asexual morph, with apiospores in the sexual morph. In this study, seventeen isolates of Arthrinium were collected in China. Based on their morphology and phylogenetic characterization, four new species (A. biseriale, A. cyclobalanopsidis, A. gelatinosum, and A. septatum) are described and seven known species (A. arundinis, A. garethjonesii, A. guizhouense, A. hydei, A. neosubglobosa, A. phyllostachium and A. psedoparenchymaticum) are identified, of which the sexual morph of three species (A. guizhouense, A. phyllostachium and A. psedoparenchymaticum) and asexual morph of A. garethjonesii are reported for the first time. The detailed descriptions, illustrations and comparisons with related taxa of these new collections are provided. Phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, TUB2, and TEF sequence data support their placements in the genus Arthrinium and justify the new species establishments and identifications of known species.

Though several Diaporthe species have been reported in China, little is known about the species associated with nature reserves in Guizhou province. During a survey of fungi in six nature reserves in Guizhou province of China, thirty-one Diaporthe isolates were collected from different woody hosts. Based on morphology, culture characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis, these isolates were characterized and identified. Phylogenetic analysis of internal transcribed spacer region (ITS), combined with translation elongation factor 1-alpha (tef), ß-tubulin (tub), calmodulin (cal) and histone H3 (his) gene regions identified five known Diaporthe species and seven distinct lineages representing novel Diaporthe species. The details of five known species: Diaporthe cercidis, D. cinnamomi, D. conica, D. nobilis and D. sackstonii are given and the seven new species D. constrictospora, D. ellipsospora, D. guttulata, D. irregularis, D. lenispora, D. minima, and D. minusculata are introduced with detailed descriptions and illustrations. This study revealed a high diversity of previously undescribed Diaporthe species associated with woody hosts in various nature reserves of Guizhou province, indicating that there is a potential of Diaporthe species remains to be discovered in this unique landform (Karst formations) in China. Interestingly, the five known Diaporthe species have been reported as pathogens of various hosts, and this could indicate that those newly introduced species in this study could be potentially pathogenic pending further studies to confirm.

OBJECTIVE: Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (US-FNAB) is a safe and effective method of screening malignant thyroid nodules such as papillary thyroid carcinoma. However, not much data are available regarding the diagnostic efficacy of US-FNAB for papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (≤10 mm in diameter). We aim to compare the diagnostic efficacy of US-FNAB on thyroid nodules between two groups divided by a diameter of 10 mm by correlating the cytological results of US-FNAB with the histopathologic diagnoses in selected patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eight hundred twenty-two thyroid nodules (Group A: diameter ≤10 mm, n=620; Group B: diameter >10 mm, n=202) from 797 patients treated between March 2014 and June 2017 were retrospectively evaluated. Only nodules with Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data System (TIRADS) categories 4-6 were enrolled and sampled by US-FNAB, followed by surgical resection. RESULTS: According to The Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology (TBSRTC) diagnostic categories, 94 thyroid nodules were classified as I, III and IV, and were excluded from the analysis. The resultant 728 thyroid nodules from 721 patients were analyzed. The malignant tendency (TBSRTC V and VI) rates on US-FNAB were 88.2% and 84.6% (P=0.202) in Group A and Group B, respectively, and the malignant rates were 89.5% and 86.9% (P=0.330), respectively, on histopathology. There was a high concordance between cytology and histopathology diagnoses (kappa value =0.797), and no statistical difference in terms of US-FNAB accuracy was found between the two groups (P=0.533). CONCLUSION: For thyroid nodules of TIRADS category 4-6, the diagnostic efficacy of US-FNAB is similar for thyroid nodules either smaller or greater than 10 mm in their maximum diameter.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the situations of departments of intensive care units (ICUs) of different level hospitals in Guizhou Province, and to provide directions and evidences for improving quality control in critical care medicine. METHODS: A county-level hospital and a provincial-level hospital's comprehensive ICU in Guizhou Province were selected to record and analyze and compare the structural indicators, patient admission and transfer, disease distribution, ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), intravascular catheter related blood stream infection (CRBSI) and catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) of the two hospitals' comprehensive ICU in 2017. RESULTS: The ICU of the People's Hospital of Suiyang County (county hospital) was found in 2012, and the ICU of the Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou Medical University (provincial hospital) was found in 1994. Until 2017, there were 10 and 46 beds, 6 (all of them hold bachelor's degree) and 18 physicians (6 of them hold PhD, 5 of them hold master's degree, 7 of them hold bachelor's degree), 17 (4 of them hold bachelor's degree, 13 of them hold college degree or graduated from secondary school) and 69 nurses (2 of them hold master's degree, 53 of them hold bachelor's degree, 14 of them hold college degree or graduated from secondary school) in the two ICUs respectively, there were significant differences in the education background of the physicians and nurses between the two ICUs (both P < 0.01). During 2017, 471 cases were admitted to the ICU of the county hospital while 1 633 cases were admitted to the ICU of the provincial hospital. Compared with the ICU of the provincial hospital, the ratio of the patients with acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) ≥ 15 at admission was lower (74.8% vs. 85.1%, P < 0.01), the ratio of direct admission was higher (30.8% vs. 17.4%, P < 0.01), the ratio of the patients admitted to the ICU more than once was lower (0.8% vs. 5.0%, P < 0.01), the ratio of the patients whose the length of ICU stay less than 24 hours was higher (51.6% vs. 13.7%, P < 0.01), the ratio of the patients whose the length of ICU stay more than 28 days was lower (1.1% vs. 2.9%, P < 0.05), the ratio of the patients discharged against-advice (25.5% vs. 20.5%, P < 0.05) was higher, the ratio of the patients transferred to other hospitals was higher (5.1% vs. 0.3%, P < 0.05), and the ICU mortality was lower (4.0% vs. 13.9%, P < 0.01) in the ICU of the county hospital. The top three kinds of diseases treated in the ICU of the county hospital were brain injury (27.4%), trauma (19.1%) and toxication (6.8%); while in the ICU of the provincial hospital were brain injury (18.6%), sepsis (16.2%) and severe acute pancreatitis (4.8%). In addition, the incidences of VAP, CRBSI and CAUTI in the ICU of the county hospital were 10.0/1 000 ventilator days, 1.4/1 000 catheter days, 0.5/1 000 catheter days; while in the ICU of the provincial hospital were 5.8/1 000 ventilator days, 2.0/1 000 catheter days, 3.7/1 000 catheter days, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There are short of physicians and nurses in the ICU of the provincial and county hospitals in Guizhou Province, and the educational level of the medical staff in the ICU of the county hospital is relatively low. Moreover, there were significant differences in the admissions and treatments and the outcomes of the critically ill patients between the two ICUs. The characteristics of the ICUs of county hospitals should be fully considered when the quality control of critical care medicine and continuing medical education are done.

Ulcerative colitis is a major inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), characterized by inflammation within the gastrointestinal tract through chronic or relapsing immune system activation. The aim of this study is to investigate the potential protective effect of oat ß-glucan (ßG) against colitis induced by DSS in mice. Eighty mice were randomly divided into the control group (no DSS, no ßG), DSS group (DSS only), DSS + L-ßG group (DSS plus 500 mg per kg ßG), and DSS + H-ßG group (DSS plus 1000 mg per kg ßG). Compared with the DSS group, administration of ßG significantly reduced clinical symptoms with less weight loss, diarrhea and shortening of the colon, the severity of colitis was significantly inhibited as evidenced by the reduced disease activity index (DAI) and degree of histological damage in colon. Moreover, treatment with ßG not only decreased myeloperoxidase activity (MPO), and nitric oxide (NO) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, but also inhibited mRNA and protein expression of pro-inflammatory factors such as TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6 and iNOS. This suggests that oat ßG in diet might exhibit an anti-inflammatory function against colitis through inhibition of expression of pro-inflammatory factors.

RESUMO

This paper describes and introduces lesbians' lives and the relevant research in China's Mainland. The first part shows the slow development of lesbian culture in the form of literature, films and documentaries. Although lesbians' lives were reflected more or less in modern literature, the "true" lesbian novel was published only recently. Relevant films and documentaries were never shown to the public in China. Lesbian culture is still unevenly developed and remains negligible. The first part also describes lesbian research in the field of literature, psychiatry and sociology. The relevant research in literature is relatively systematic and rich, while that in psychiatry is fraught with discrimination and that in sociology is relatively weak. The second part presents the observation and analysis of lesbian Internet communities. It deals with lesbians' self-identity, role differentiation, sentiments and sexuality. Among them, role differentiation plays an important part in lesbians' lives though few researchers have studied it. Most lesbian organizations founded on the strength of Internet communication lack experience and resources and have little influence on the masses. Some lesbians are accepted by the public, but in return, they compromise to some popular values. This is extremely disadvantageous to those who are unwilling to give in. At the end of the paper, the first author expresses her future plan that she will continue her study on lesbian culture under the help of Internet observation and various activities. doi:10.1300/J155v10n03_08.
